What is the new season of the year?

No, it is not fall! It is shoebox packing season in many of our churches, businesses, and clubs. It is the time of the year when all the shopping and collecting pays off. What a blessing it is to see the items go into the boxes and know that in about five weeks they will begin their journey from where we live to a child somewhere around the world, often in a country you cannot easily point to on a map. Be sure each box and each recipient is prayed for. I also like to thank God for those who contributed and packed the shoeboxes.

If your church, school, club, etc. does not pack shoeboxes, I cannot fully explain what blessings you are missing out on. If your church, school, club, etc. would like to learn more and receive guidance, step-by-step, I volunteer to be your guide. I’ve learned so much over the many years of packing that I think I can explain, encourage, and guide you as you work through the process. I surely can tell you what a blessing it is to all who participate in any way. Be prepared to be blessed.

Today’s Prayer Focus

Today, let’s pray for the Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes.

“Surrender yourself to the LORD, and wait patiently for him.”

~Psalm 37:7 (GW)~

God doesn’t owe us a reason for things that happen.

Surrender to His will as we face the changes.

He is in charge.

I forgot to include Adelyn Thornton of Arcola yesterday. She suffered an eye injury playing soccer at school this week. She’s improving. Pray for no long-term effects. Adelyn is the daughter of Josh and Danyelle.

Pray for Jewel Kay Y. Cutrer as she has additional treatments as revealed in her care plan at M.D. Anderson last week. She’s back at home in Kentwood now.

Pray for Andy Taylor as he has a heart procedure next Tuesday. Pray for his caregiver, Betty, as she cares for him.

David Diddon was killed in a motorcycle accident yesterday morning. I’ll post an obituary when one is available.

It’s good to see progress on roof repair at several area churches. Hurricane Ida didn’t spare churches as she blew through here a month and a half ago. There are addition churches still requiring repair. Thankfully, they did not sustain damage that stopped any services.

Outreach projects

Hurricane Ida gave us opportunity to see Southern Baptist Disaster Relief in action. I don’t know all the places where they worked, but I can see evidence of their efforts every time I drive into town. They made an impact in our area following Ida.

There are many ways our local churches impact the community. Learn about them and get involved in impacting our community through volunteer actions.

I’m looking forward to a change in the weather in the next few days. Enjoy some outdoor time and see how God is providing the falling leaves and cooler temperatures.

I got to visit with Donna Fay Miller for a few minutes. She has been homebound even more than we have been. She has had some heart procedures since I last saw her. It was wonderful to see her again.

Tommy Hood received very good news at M.D. Anderson yesterday.

Tommy had a CT/PET scan, labs and a MRI yesterday. We went to the sarcoma doctor today and they gave us some news we were NOT expecting. There is no presence of tumor activity. The original tumor in his hip soft tissues, muscles and bone and his lung mets and the tumors surrounding his heart are gone. No active tumor activity! They are changing his chemo and doing up to 6 more treatments to make sure we get all the nasty cells that still may be present, but the doctor said he is on path to live a long, healthy life! Happiest day of my life since the birth of my boys! All I can say is that God is working! Prayers are working! We have a wonderful medical team, but to be at this point after only 6 rounds of chemo is a miracle to me. I think I’m still in shock! God is GOOD! Thank y’all for all your prayers! We still have a long road to get to ring that bell and get our “get out of jail” cancer card, but today we celebrate! Monday starts round 7. We are going into it mentally healthy after the news today…There is minimal scaring. My son is a warrior and I know his mental and physical strength have helped us reach this point. He is my hero! Pray for Jerry Doughty. He was allowed to return home yesterday. Pray for his caregiver, June, that she will be up to the task of taking care of him at home.

There are many others who serve as caregivers so someone can stay at home where they are happiest. Pray for all the sick and for all the caregivers. I can tell you it is a demanding responsibility.

I’m thankful to announce that the first 150 shoeboxes for the year were packed yesterday in about two hours. I’m thankful for those who gave of their time and efforts to be there. When we consider that “shoeboxes” average out to impacting 7 individuals for Jesus, that 1,050 lives that can potentially be touched by our efforts. I feel so blessed to be part of this effort.

Shoebox” Opportunities this week

Give money through the regular offering to help pay postage and training in churches so the children can learn about Jesus, etc. It averages out to $9.00 per shoebox.

Volunteer to help fold the shoeboxes we will fill Saturday. Please contact me by noon Monday.

Volunteer to pack future boxes, work in our drop-off location, drive to Hammond to pick up or deliver shoeboxes, etc.

There are a number of individual and organized ways you can minister to others. Find one or some that fit your personality, schedule, etc. and be a big. blessing to others.

Participate in church in person, or online if you cannot be there in person.

Request from Charles Dean, former minister of music at Spring Creek Baptist Church

Would you add my family to the Prayer Link please. My dad passed away this week in Orlando while he, my mom, and my 3 sisters were at Disney World. I flew to Orlando to drive them home. He was suffering from serious respiratory problems, probably from COVID (although he was never actually diagnosed, they strongly suspect it was the cause).

William Austin Dean

April 14, 1954 – October 6, 2021

William Austin Dean, 67, of Panama City, passed away on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at the conclusion of a visit to Walt Disney World with his beloved wife and daughters in their Happy Place. Born April 14, 1954 in Greenville, South Carolina, he retired in 2008 as owner of Piggly Wiggly Millville Supermarket.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles & Christine Dean; and siblings Ann, Eddy, and Debbie.  He is survived by his wife Susan; two sons, Charles (Vickey) and Tommy; three daughters, Alicia, Elizabeth and Rachel; three grandchildren, Sereniti, Sophi, and Nathaniel; and one brother, Chuck.  The family will receive friends at the Wilson Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 from 5-7 p.m.  Private family graveside services will be held on Wednesday at the Forest Lawn Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to First Baptist Church Panama City, P.O. Box 1200, Panama City, FL 32402 in memory of Billy Dean.

The number of Covid cases is going down from the fourth spike, but it certainly is still around.

I have another former student who is very ill. She has been sick for several years. Please pray for her and her sweet family.

Happy holidays! It’s packing season for Operation Christmas Child in many churches. Join in and pack a box or boxes on your own. Ask someone how you can do it either online or by doing your own shopping. I will be happy to help any individual, club, school, or church get started (either this year or for next year).

Today’s Prayer Focus

Today, let’s pray for fathers. They lead the family whether they know it or not. There or many ways this is done. One way, that makes a difference eternally, is in church attendance and service. When the father leads the family to church involvements, about 85% of the time the whole family will be involved long term. Today, let’s pray for fathers as they set the example for their family in many ways.

“Just as there are many parts to our bodies, so it is with Christ’s body. We are all parts of it, and it takes every one of us to make it complete, for we each have different work to do. So we belong to each other, and each needs all the others.”

~Romans 12:4-5 (TLB)~

Volunteer – a person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task.

All great tasks in the kingdom of God and in other places require volunteers. They are not motivated by money, but purpose!

PACKING OF SHOEBOXES WILL BE DONE IN THE NEXT THREE WEEKS. Then, we look ahead to a week of collecting shoeboxes from others to send them on the next step of the way to the right child for each box. Only God can get the boxes to the right children, but I have heard many stories of a child who wanted, and sometimes needed, an unusual item. It turned out to be the main item of the shoebox the child received. For example, one child wanted a radio. I’ve never thought about packing a radio, or know of someone who did, but the child who wanted a radio got a radio in a “shoebox” packed in a far-away country. ONLY GOD!

Mrs. Bessie Hayden had to go back to the hospital. Please keep her in your prayers.

Pray for another of my former students who is very sick.

Prayer Focus for Today

Our area is very thankful for the volunteers who came here to help our residents with downed trees and damaged roofs. Think of others who worked, without pay, to help in recovery. They are volunteers. They do a good work. God blesses them for their work. We have many who volunteer here on a regular basis. Think of parents and grandparents who volunteer at schools. Think about Sunday School teachers and other volunteer laborers at schools and churches. Think of people who clean the roadway in their neighborhood. Think of those who serve for many years in hospitals. I know I am on focus this morning. The television segment on right now just said “volunteer” and talked about others who benefit another community by giving of their time. Thank God for volunteers. Ask Him how He can best use your time and talents.
