Thursday

“Six days you shall labor,

but on the seventh day you shall rest;

even during the plowing season and harvest

you must rest.

~Exodus 34:21~

I like to “burn my candles at both ends”, but God has ways of slowing us down for rest.

David Bryant is improving.  He has lost some weight and is working of strengthening his legs for walking again.  Please pray for him to continue to progress.

My David is also improving.  He has fought hard to maintain the correct position for his head.   We look forward to seeing the retina specialist tomorrow.  I must say David has been a good patient.  He wants to be well and able to see!

Tuesday

Look at the birds of the air;

they do not sow or reap or store away in barns,

and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

Are you not much more valuable than they?

Can any one of you by worrying

add a single hour to your life?

~Matthew 6:26-27~

Today, I want to start by saying the WMU ladies who say “Keep the meeting previously scheduled on Labor Day and we will come” really do show up.

Secondly, I want you to know the meeting  touched our hearts as we studied about the Georgia Barnette Offering for Louisiana.

Thirdly, Carol Bridges has a heart for missions and conveyed that love as she presented the program.

Lastly, I want to leave you with the words to a song Linda Graves sang for us.  I’m already looking forward to our next meeting.

“God Will Make this Trial a Blessing”

Originally recorded by the McKameys

VERSE 1
I’ve just come into a valley one like I’ve never been before
I keep searching for a way out seems like padlocks are on the doors
Oh there must be another sunrise another sunset that I’ll see
God will make this trial a blessing that’s the love He has for me
CHORUS
God will make this trial a blessing though it sends me to my knees
Though my tears flow like a river yet in Him there’s sweet relief
There’s no need to get discouraged there’s no need to talk defeat
God will make this trial a blessing and the whole wide world will see
VERSE 2
I was not the first one to come into this place
You see every child of God this test he must face
It is here that God will mold you and make you what you ought to be
God will make this trial a blessing just be patient you will see
VERSE 3
Now I’m standing on the mountain looking back and I can see
When I was in that lowest valley His strong hand was leading me
Oh it’s good to see the sunshine and to taste sweet victory
God has made this trial a blessing oh the grace He gives to me

Today, I want to remind us of J.L. and Wanzie Williams and their extended family.  Their family seems to be going through several difficult situations.  Their older son, Stan, is very ill.  Also, Wanzie’s sister, Julie Kay, is very ill.  Julie Kay has a daughter is also needs our prayers as she goes through a very difficult time in her life.  I trust God will make this time of difficulties a time of remembrance and refocusing in the lives of the family members.

I’ve known of a couple pastors who passed away while preaching.  Now, we know of three volunteers who passed away in LA while doing work following floods.  The following is about the second one, a man from AL.

I’ll end with a closing reminder that many people need today.  You may be one of that number.

God will make this trial a blessing though it sends me to my knees.

Though my tears flow like a river yet in Him there’s sweet relief.

There’s no need to get discouraged there’s no need to talk defeat.

“Our purpose is to please God, not people.

He alone examines the motives of our hearts”

~1 Thessalonians 2:4b NLT, 2nd ed.~

I forgot to tell you that another sister of Mrs. Mickey Cade passed away.  I know you will want to remember the family in your prayers.

Three members of the late Mrs. Wanzie Williams family are in need of our prayers.  They are Stan Williams, her older son, her sister, Julie Kay, and Julie Kay’s daughter.  The last one, Julie Kay’s daughter is especially ill.  Prayers would be greatly appreciated.

Karen Miller’s grandson, Christian Smalley, was taken to the hospital because of a heart issue.  According to Bro. Joey yesterday afternoon, Christian apparently had a-fib which cleared when he was sedated for a conversion which became unnecessary.  He will be watched closely.  Christian seems otherwise healthy, so doctors think he will do well.

Please pray for Beverly “Doodle” Watson again.  Her disease has reappeared.  Pray for strength for a continued battle.

Looking ahead:

  • This is another good week to volunteer to help family, friends, and strangers recover from the flood.  We do not all have to tear our sheetrock.  There are ways we can help.  Check around.  Make yourself available.  God can use you.  You will be blessed even greater than those you are helping.  Call me TODAY to volunteer.  I promise you will be able to do these things.  Special thanks to those who have served for a short time or day after day.  Consider the Scriptures about the Good Samaritan who helped a stranger.  We have that opportunity many times over.
  • The children’s missions classes will be working on mission projects this week.  They will help with Operation Christmas Child Wednesday night at 6.  It will be fun and teach the children so much.
  • Looking ahead, adults can help in a new way with Operation Christmas Child this year.  FBC, Kentwood will be a collection center.  We will meet with volunteers from other churches to learn about the collection process and our responsibilities.  You can call or see me to volunteer.  Our meeting will be at 10 A.M. on October 1st.  The collection days are November 14-21.
  • Bible Study continues on Friday mornings at 10 A.M.
  • Suggested items you can provide this week:
    • Fall Food Roundup for the Louisiana Baptist Children’s HomeDishwasher detergent, Disinfectant spray, and/or Dryer sheets.  These can be brought to the area under the stairwell at that office entrance to the church.
    • Suggested items for Operation Christmas Childone or more small balls less than 3″ in diameter.  These can be brought to my Sunday School classroom.
  • The annual Georgia Barnette Offering emphasis will be Monday, September 5 at NZBC at 10 A.M.  A potluck lunch will follow the meeting.  Much money is coming into our area to help with flood relief.  All ladies are invited to come learn with us.

Thanks for allowing to come into your home with my thoughts and messages.

Plans are in the works for the children to experience missions as they have another opportunity to participate in Operation Christmas Child Wednesday at 6 P.M.  Also, there’s several opportunities this week for adults to participate in meeting needs due to flooding.  Let me know via email, Facebook, telephone call, or personal contact if you are interested in participating.

If you want to “Let it Start with Me”,  we can make a difference.  It’s not about me personally.  It’s about each of us doing our part!

Saturday Addition

First, I want to share this article written by Dr. Waylon Bailey, pastor of FBC, Covington, which he wrote to share with his church.  Some of the article is general information,  applicable to all Southern Baptists, but some specifically applies to his church ($30,000 collected last weekend).

I see the article as evidence of so much that needs to be done.  I note his appreciation of the large number of Baptist VOLUNTEERS who have worked and are still working.  Much of the work in our area has been done.  Soon, some of those working in this area will be moving to staging areas closer to where much of the work still needs to be done.

I have been blessed to know some of what has been done.  The stories told by the VOLUNTEERS will touch your heart. I hope you have the opportunity to hear from the volunteers or the victims.

Helping Hurting People

We all know how widespread this is and how many people have suffered because of it.

Here are some things you need to know.

In addition to the 60,000 homes flooded, 72 Southern Baptist churches and 57 pastor homes in this area of Louisiana flooded as well.

The response by faith based groups has been astounding.

Southern Baptists, through the North American Mission Board, have been on the ground and are committed to be here for the long haul. So far Baptists from 21 states are in Louisiana with 48 officially trained mud out teams at work “gutting” houses. In addition, there are “probably twice that many teams which are not officially trained at work across the region.”

Southern Baptists are the third largest relief agency in the country (after the Red Cross and the Salvation Army). The wonderful thing about Southern Baptist Disaster Relief is that it is volunteer labor without any overhead. When you and I give to the various offerings to meet the needs of people all of the money goes to people needing assistance.

I am thankful to be associated with that kind of group.

I listened this week in a pastor’s meeting to a representative of Southern Baptist Disaster Relief. He described “a miracle in spontaneous response.” He said we are further along after two weeks than most areas are after eight weeks.

I credit “people helping people” and the churches of the area responding so rapidly. David Hankins, Executive Director of the Louisiana Baptist Convention, noted that “Churches are the best Disaster Relief organizations in existence.”

Thank you for volunteering across the region to help people “gut out” (also known as “mud out”) their homes. Thank you also for the almost $30,000 you gave last weekend for relief help. We will use that money and additional funds that will be given to meet as many needs as possible.

Second, I want to acknowledge the churches that have stepped up to help so many in needs, people they don’t know and  probably will never see again.  They only wanted to meet some needs and to share Jesus in the process.

What a blessing it is to help in some tiny ways!  The blessings to my heart and the hearts of others is overwhelming.  Thanks to those of you who allowed us to work alongside you.

I know each person who helps has stories to tell.  Most have stories of what they have seem.  Some will tell you of individuals they helped who blessed them in prayers.

Many have had food to eat or homes gutted and sprayed for mold.  Sometimes, the hard part was giving up possessions that where so close hearts, but totaled by the water damage.  I cannot imagine!

Many workers have had brown bag lunches.  Some loving hands prepared these and all the other meals that have been freely given.  When the supply of something runs short,  people jump in to say they will take care of the need immediately and the needs were met.

The workers I saw, even this morning, ranged in age from 10 to about 80.  I missed seeing the clean out team, but when I add the clean out team to the food and delivery people, I can only say God was leading the way.  To God by the Glory!

What a special touch to see toys in each bag marked for kids!  I saw enough food in bags for a meal and  some to have later.  How thoughtful!

If your heart hasn’t been touched by the flood damage and then by the volunteers who have stepped up to meet needs and share Jesus, you have surely missed out.

The needs are not all met.  I hope you are helping.  If not, ponder on this quote by Henry Blackaby.

Watch to see where God is working and join Him in His work

As I said earlier, “To God be the Glory”!

Friday

In the same way,

let your light shine before others,

that they may see your good deeds

and glorify your Father in heaven.

~Matthew 5:16~

Has your light been shining, especially during the past two weeks?

Harrell Sharkey, Jr. received the better of two possible diagnoses that the doctors were considering.  I’m simplify the results by saying he does NOT have cancer.  He has something that is treatable with antibiotics and steroids for the remainder of his life.  Join lots of family and friends in thanking God for this diagnosis.

Annette W.  Kauffman is now feeling better and back at home.  Thank you for praying for her.

The flood clean-up and recovery is continuing and will continue for many months, possibly years.  I hope you have been involved in helping the victims and/or volunteers in some of the numerous ways available to us.  Thank God for all those who have left their homes and families daily or for long periods of time to help those they don’t know, but care about anyway.

Operation Christmas Child Story  – https://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/shoebox-stories-kojo-and-a-yo-yo/

A few weeks ago I heard a lady talking about hearing Kojo speak in person.  She was so impressed with his story and the young man he has become because of his “shoebox”.  I challenge you to share this story with the children in your family, your church, etc.  You can print it out and read it or show the video.  Please hare this during the coming week.  Think of the blessing this story can be to our American children.  Help mold hearts to know how they can impact others.

Wednesday

Watch to see where God is working

and join Him in His work.

~Henry Blackaby~

9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you,

for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

Therefore I will boast all the more gladly

about my weaknesses,

so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

10 That is why, for Christ’s sake,

I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships,

in persecutions, in difficulties.

For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Kristi Alford

Anna Lee would U Plz do a update on my grandchildren’s Mother Kristi Alford . She heard back from her labs concerning a mass they found on her pelvic which had a stem into her ovary . The Drs R discussing some form of treatment . She will know shortly seems as though they R leaning toward radiation . Thk U for adding her to the prayer link ..

Debi Bales wrote the above message.  George Bales gave James Rimes permission for me to say that Kristi is going to M.D. Anderson for treatment.  Please pray for Kristi, her family, and the great medical staff she will have in Houston.

Please continue to pray for Sherman Cutrer and his family.  Sherman is in McComb.

I’m sure you’ve heard the old saying, “When it rains, it pours”, that could describe the Sharkey family and all the health issues they have experienced lately.  Let’s “pour on” some prayer for them.

David’s eye issues/treatment seem to have gone on for a long time.  Today, he sees the cornea specialist to be sure the new lens is properly placed, removed some stitches, and check the overall health of his eye.  David has loved helping in flooded homes.  Pray he has not done anything or been exposed to anything that will slow down the healing process.

There were fifteen “young” ladies present to celebrate the birthdays of four ladies who were able to be with us yesterday: Frances Gay, Fay Shoemaker, Ferrie Gene Blackmon, and Sue Connelly.

Many flood victims find it hard to believe how people, like Southern Baptist Disaster volunteers, can give of their time freely and work so hard in homes of people they do not know and charge absolutely nothing!  I love to see so many of our churches and God’s people being the church throughout our state.  As Dr. Wendall Fortenberry of New Zion Baptist Church so often says, “To God be the glory”.

I’m so thankful for ladies who step up to do what they can in disaster relief.  They are eager to do their part.  I love the ladies’ sweet, generous spirit and generosity of time, talents, and money.  I suppose that deserves a “To God be the glory”.

Thanks to all who have shopped and shopped again for Operation Christmas Child.  We are making good progress.  Ladies will help with a “shoebox” project Friday and children will help next Wednesday.  Missions is coming alive through so many of you who have shopped and contributed.  God is pleased because the “shoeboxes” not only represent gifts, but also the opportunity to have Bible lessons.  They change young live eternally.

Tuesday

In the same way,

faith by itself,

if it is not accompanied by action,

is dead.

~James 2:17~

With so many people working through different churches and organizations, I am happy to say faith in action abounds in our area.  One again, a Scripture so appropriate to our day, our area, and many of our churches has been waiting on my computer for me to post today.  I am so thankful to be here and see what many people/churches/organizations are doing.  The love of God abound is shown through the actions of so many.

If you have been helping, God bless you!

If you haven’t been helping, may God lead you to many opportunities to help.

Pray – Please pray for those working in homes. Pray for those traveling to being help.  Pray for those in other states who are giving and sending.  Pray for the leadership in organizations that do so much, especially those that share Jesus as they work.  May God watch over each one and bless them in each and every thing they do.

Give to worth causes.

Monday

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said,

“I am the light of the world.

Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness,

but will have the light of life.

~John 8:12~

I have had a week to take notice of instances where, as my friend’s shirt says, the church has left the building (and gone into the community).  Friend helping friend!  Stranger helping stranger!  Outsider helper local!  Locals helping outsiders!  This could go on and on.  There is no denying many have needed and received help.  Many more still need help.  Let’s be the “light” in a dark world.
