‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’

Friday

I have fought the good fight,

I have finished the race,

I have kept the faith.

Today, let’s pray for Adrian Phillips whose blood sugar level got too low.   Thankfully, he got some good help and is better.

Pray for Joe and Susanne Crowe.  Joe is having Hospice care in Baton Rouge.  They are from the Amite area.  Your prayers will be greatly appreciated.

Scarlett Splane was in a traffic accident and tore her foot/ankle area up.  She’s had extensive surgery at Ochsner on Jefferson Highway and will be “out of commission” for about six weeks.  Please pray for her and help her out in a very practical way if you can.

The flu continues to spread.  It’s a form that was not covered by the vaccine, so the injection will not protect you from it.  As always, using good judgment is wise.

will renew their strength.

They will soar on wings like eagles;

Wednesday

Look to the LORD and his strength;

seek his face always.

The Harrrells, both Mr. Phillip and “Miss” Annie Bell, showed improvement yesterday.  I hope the flu goes completely away for both of them today.

Tuesday

“There is no one holy like the LORD;

there is no one besides you;

there is no Rock like our God.

Please continue to pray for Bettye Fussell and Mr. Phillip and “Miss” Annie Bell Harrell.

David and I had a good visit with Debbie R. Miller yesterday.  She was glad to see us, as always.  Please keep her and her family in your prayers.

It seems we had been to a number of wakes and funerals lately.  That represents a number of friendships.  We never regret the special friendships God has blessed us with.

I have a good report to share.  David’s brother and sister-in-law from Holden finally got a trailer to live in while they continue to repair their home that was damaged in the August floods.  They are enjoying sleeping and eating in their new environment.

Bible Reading  – Numbers 35-36 and Psalm 52
The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,”
“You shall not murder,”
“You shall not steal,”
“You shall not covet,”
and whatever other command there may be,
are summed up in this one command:
“Love your neighbor as yourself.”
Love does no harm to a neighbor.
Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

SUMMARY

In this week’s reading, we see the torch of Israel being passed from one generation to the next before they enter the Promised Land (remember the verdict God handed down to the rebellious generation in Num. 14). This is done, most symbolically, in the leadership of the Israelites being handed from Moses to Joshua. This new generation, with Joshua at the helm, tastes their first victories in battles with regional city-states on the east side of the Jordan River, an area called Moab.

However, Moses’ role is not yet done. You will also open the book of Deuteronomy this week, which is a collection of teachings by Moses that adapts the laws given at Mt. Sinai. He reshapes the covenant laws to address this new generation about to go into the Promised Land. His wise words provide inspiring promises to the Israelites if they keep the covenant laws, and he offers sobering warnings of what will happen if they do not.

Pay Special Attention: Deuteronomy 6:4-5, commonly called “the Shema,” became a prayer in Jewish tradition that was uttered twice a day. This practice continues on today, thousands of years later.
