READ THE BIBLE IN 2021 – January 1, 2021

Today is the day to begin reading the Bible in one year for the first time for some. For others, it will be reading again since they have done so before. The time is never right to stop reading. Today’s reading is the first three chapters of the Bible.

Genesis 1:1 – Genesis 3:24

Don’t forget you get a printed list at FBC, Kentwood. They are available in the sanctuary and during office hours.

PRAYER FOCUS FOR TODAY – Today, let’s pray for each other as we read our Bibles this year. Many years ago, I asked my cousin to be my accountability partner for my daily Bible reading. She called each evening to ask if I had read my Bible that day. If I hadn’t she asked me to read aloud over the phone. It worked. Her calls were my motivation to keep reading when I had lots of homework or other things to my schedule. Accountability partners are good for each other. If you need one, pray today for God to help you select someone who will be faithful in reminding you to read your Bible.

HYMN OF THE DAY

I don’t know what 2021 holds for us as individual, families, churches, towns, or countries, but I know who holds our tomorrows. He will walk with us through all our good days and our bad days. I hope you know Him too.

My apologies for being late with this post. My computer suddenly stopped opening tabs early this morning. I thought I had done something wrong, but Jason suggested the internet must have been down. Thankfully, he was correct.

Ashley Miller Hutto had a successful gall bladder surgery yesterday. Pray for her during her recovery.

Donna Fay Miller has several health issues that seem to require periodic hospitalizations. She’s home now. Pray for Donna Fay’s health.

Mr. “Cete” and “Miss” Ruby Dillon are hospitalized, but may not be there very long before going to rehab. Thank God for their improvement from covid.

Pray for all the others who are sick with covid. David and I have both lost a cousin and some friends. Most families have now lost at least one loved one. Pray for families.

Jimmie J. Van Jr, 78 of McComb, MS, passed from this life to his Heavenly home on December 29, 2020.  At the time of his passing, Mr. Van was lovingly surrounded by his children.

Mr. Van was born on August 5, 1942 to Jimmie J. Van Sr. and Elizabeth Wilkinson Van, who preceded him in death.  He was also preceded in death by his precious granddaughter Delia Catherine Van, daughter of Justin Cord and Diane Lazarus Van.

Mr. Van’s title was “Papaw” to grandchildren, Laila Annette (11), Charles “Charlie” Prescott (6) and twins Mary Callihan and Elizabeth “Liz Morgan” Kitchens (3) all of Hattiesburg, MS.   His grandchildren brought him so much joy and he was loved dearly by them all.

Mr. Van grew up in Magnolia near Terry’s Creek Baptist Church where he was a member and learned to sing and love Christian music. Throughout his life, he led music at various churches around McComb which included Bogue Chitto Baptist Church, Magnolia Methodist Church and Terry’s Creek Baptist Church. He was also a faithful choir member at Central Baptist Church for many years.

Mr. Van graduated in 1960 from Magnolia High School and immediately joined the U.S. Air Force for four years.  Once he returned home, Mr. Van attended Southwest MS Community College and Hinds Junior College where he studied computers.  After working with computers for several years, Mr. Van made the decision to start a new business in McComb with his parent’s encouragement.  In September 1971, Van opened the doors of a new building in Pike Center Mart, named City Paint & Glass. He was owner/operator for 37 years before retiring.  City Paint & Glass today proudly runs under the leadership of Mr. Van’s two sons, Jason Van and Justin Van.

Read the Bible in 2021

Tomorrow is the official date to begin to read through the Bible again. I got an early start and am enjoying the familiar stories. Reading a translation that is more like reading a modern day book makes it easier than the formality of some other versions. It is very appropriate for this.

Today’s Prayer Focus

  1. Thank God for 2020 despite covid and other issues you may have faced. Thank him for His presence with you daily, all the provisions He supplied, your health, your family, etc. There is much to thank Him for even though we have had a pandemic.
  2. Ask God for guidance in 2021. He is prepared to give it to us. We just need to listen to Him and follow His guidance.

Stay safe this holiday!

Operation Christmas Child

It may seem early to you to think about packing shoeboxes for the 2021 Christmas season, but I assure you lots of dedicated packers are out looking for deals and beginning to shop according to their packing plans for the coming season. A friend has already started sewing for our shoeboxes. She made masks for all our boxes last year. Yesterday, she sent me sample of her sewing projects for the coming shoebox season. What is your talent? What will you aim to accomplish for OCC in 2021. We all need to start with our talents and make our plans. Be thinking and then, volunteer. Yesterday, I also had a volunteer for online shopping. What a blessing these ladies are to the “shoebox” program.

Have you really prayed about someone or something lately. I believe God wants us to fervently pray.

Despite learning of more covid cases in our area, I also hear of improvements. Today, I can say that Deputy Charles Warren had made several significant improvements in the last few days. Let’s pray for his continued improvement and for the improvement of all the others who are now sick. I read that worldwide, many places are reporting higher number of cases than ever before. Be safe and pray.

Today’s Prayer Focus: Today, I plan to spend some time listing all of my many blessing of 2020 and thanking God for how the blessings greatly outnumber the problems. Today, focus on the positives of 2020 and thank God.

The chronological Bible reading plan for 2021 is available at FBC, Kentwood. Stop by and get one for your/your family’s use. I finished my 2020 plan and started this new one early. I’m enjoying it and not finding it difficult to follow. I hope many of you begin it on the first.

Don’t forget we will be repurposing men’s button front shirts into dresses for Operation Christmas Child. We are depending on you to supply us with shirts. They can be left in the church office or the classroom next to the choir room. Let me know if you would like to learn how to cut and sew the shirts for this awesome transformation.

Today is a good day to pray for and contribute to the Lottie Moon Offering for international missions.

Looking ahead to 2021, what are some areas of your life you may wish to alter. Think of spiritual changes, not just the physical changes we often hear. Do you need to get more involved in your church? Do you need more Bible study? Do you need to get involved in a ministry? Etc.

Many of us have spent most of our days home and away from people because of the pandemic. Today, make an effort to contact at least one person you have not seen lately. Check on their health and their needs. Pray for them. Let them know someone is thinking about them. Be an encourager! They will be blessed! You will also be blessed!
