Allen Brent LaFleur

January 9, 1954 – March 6, 2023


Allen ( Brent ) LaFleur passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, March 6, 2023 at the age of 69. Born on January 9, 1954 to the late Essie Fontenot and Allen LaFleur Sr. in Ville Platte, La.

As a child and young adult, Brent resided in New Orleans. The last 40 years residing on his cherished land in Amite, La. Brent has worked hard his life and has been retired for the last several years. This allowed him to do what he enjoyed the most. Fishing, hunting and cooking.

Survived by his loving brothers and sister, Oklin J. Vidrine (Rose), James A. Vidrine (Mary) and Carol A. Bodden      (Jimmy). As well as many nieces and nephews.

Per his request, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers or other, the family asks that you please honor his wishes and just remember all the great memories of him. Although impossible not to mourn, Brent would not want anyone to shed a tear over him. That was the unselfish man he was. And, if you knew him, you would probably say ” Yep, that was Brent “.

Ethel Gene Phares “Sissy” Campo, a resident of Amite, died Friday, March 3, 2023 at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, LA. Ethel was born on April 20, 1940 to James “Steward” Phares, Sr. and Evelyn Hendry Phares and was 82 years of age. Ethel grew up in Amite and was a 1958 graduate of Amite High School. Ethel and Earl lived in Franklinton for a number of years before returning to make Amite their home. They enjoyed riding motorcycles, camping, and spending time at their camp on the river. Survivors include her husband of 39 years, Earl V. Campo; stepdaughter, Tony C. Hobgood (Keith); stepson, Patrick Campo; step-grandsons, Allen and Mark Hobgood; step-great-grandchildren, Levi, Ryder and Addison; brothers, James S. Phares, Jr. (Dorothy), Tim E. Phares, Sr. (Gloria), Sherman H. Helen Spears Smith

May 19, 1929 – March 1, 2023

Mrs. Helen Spears Smith, 93, of Osyka, MS, passed from this life on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at her residence with her loving family by her side. She was born on May 19, 1929, in Osyka, MS, to Fred Andrew Spears and Eunice Cutrer Spears.

She was well known for her time owning and operating LaSherry’s restaurant in her home town of Osyka with her husband Millard. This adventure gave them plenty of opportunity to socialize and make new friends in their community which she loved so much. She also had a passion for her flowers which led to some night school learning how to make beautiful flower arrangements. She put this talent to work helping numerous nieces & nephews providing all floral arrangements for their weddings. Most important to her was her love & concern for family that included nine brothers and sisters and many, many nieces & nephews that considered her their most favorite aunt celebrating countless holiday events in her home filled with joy, laughter and wonderful memories that will never be forgotten.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 60 wonderful years, Millard Smith; two sisters, Addie Lee Spears Feigler and Louise Spears; and eight brothers, Talmadge Spears, Fred Andrew Spears, Frederick Spears, Jimmie Spears, Roderick Spears, Homer Spears, Charles Spears, and Ben Spears .

She is survived by her two sisters, Ruby Spears Chambers and Margie Spears Daniels; and a host of nieces and nephews, family, and friends.

Pallbearers are Freddie Spears, Damon Spears, Bentley Spears, Justin Spears, Landon Lockwood, and Cody Spears.

Honorary pallbearers are Steve Spears and Jay Chambers.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, March 7, 2023, at Sharkey Funeral Home in Summit, MS, beginning at 1PM until time of service at 2PM. A graveside service will immediately at Osyka Cemetery follow with Bro. Rick Kennedy officiating.

The family would like to extend a very special thanks to Kayla, Marilyn, and Kim with Enhabit Hospice as well as caregivers, Keyvalyn Jackson and Jackie White.

This morning, let’s pray for all those who had weather-related damage yesterday. Yesterday, I heard there were three tornadoes in Shreveport. I don’t know all the details. This morning, David received a message from our son about about a tornado at Berry College which is located about a mile or so from their our son’s home. It seems most of the damage was at the front entrance and the two beautiful fields leading up to the main campus. When we go to Rome, GA, we always ride through the campus to enjoy seeing the unique old building that remain, the beautiful drive to Camp Winshape, the pond with geese, ducks, etc. that we can feed, the unique buildings for staff, etc. There are always hikers and bikers along the little road. Best of all is seeing the deer, sometimes thousands of them. Join me in thanking God for the safety of the students and other residents there. We even heard the eagles who live and nest there are safe. Thank God for the safety all the people who live there and on Martha Berry Highway. I an unaware if there was additional damage in the area. Pray for all people who wake up there and anywhere else to deal with tornado damage.

Nena Catalanotto Samuels was 63 years old, born on Nov.26,1959 in Independence, La. to Joseph Catalanotto and Mary Wells Catalanotto. She was known and loved by many. Nena carried many titles , mother, grandmother, sister, friend and aunt, but her most treasures titles were mother and grandmother.

Nena is survived by her son Joshua Catalanotto & Ontrale Johnson the mother of their four children Elena, Lana, Aleyah & Eliyah Catalanotto. Brothers Mike Catalanotto, Tony Catalanotto & Glenn Catalanotto Sisters Louise Smith, Kathy Warren & Teddy Collins, very special friends Mrs. Velma Richardson, Mrs.Mary, Mrs. Tangi, Mrs. Aydell, Mrs Cathy McElveen, nieces, nephews & other friends.

THANKFULNESS

David and I spent must of yesterday shopping for OCC. We are thankful we were able to locate some items we were lacking and some wonderful red and white striped pajamas for many of the children. All those items are at the church and ready for attention this morning. I’m thankful Jackie has volunteered to help me today. We will be able to accomplish some tasks that were on my shopping and preparation lists for the workday for this Saturday. I’m so thankful for those of you who have made plans to participate Saturday.

My prayers this morning focus on OCC. Would you also pray for the many people who are part of the process of getting “Shoeboxes” into the hand of children worldwide. Also, pray for the children and their families. May they recognize Jesus as the main objective of the whole process and take Him into their hearts and choose to live for him daily for the rest of their lives.
