  • Elijah “Lige” Tate Travis, Jr.

December 14, 1962 – April 22, 2020

Elijah “Lige” Tate Travis Jr., 57, of Kentwood, LA went home to be with the Lord April 22, 2020 after an automobile accident. Lige was born to Elijah “Lige” and Marguerite Travis of Kentwood on December 14, 1962 and was surely overjoyed when he met them in heaven. Lige was a former dairy farmer and spent his career in refineries traveling worldwide for his trade as a member of Boilermakers Local 37. He was always a hard worker and looked up to on job sites where he formed many lifelong friendships. In his time off, you would find him spending time with his family, fishing, hunting, riding his Harley, or helping others with farm work. Lige is survived by his wife, Margaret Travis, his children Jessica and boyfriend Justin, Marshal and wife Tabetha, Aimee, Lige and their mother Tammy; stepdaughters Brittney Dayberry and husband Kurt, Jennifer Henderson and husband Keven, five grandchildren, Sarah Strickland, Levi Strickland, Kari Travis, Kain Travis, and Gracie Ballard; five step-grandchildren, Brooke, Kelsey, Ella Grace, Emmit, and Elliot;  a brother, Tommy Travis; and two sisters, Janet Alessi and Patsy Brumfield. The “roadrunner” is now running blue ticks and finding all the best fishing holes in paradise with his daughter, Gracie Travis; his mother and father, Lige and Marguerite Travis; a brother, Richard Travis; and nephews, Davy Travis and Barrett Black. Due to the covid-19 pandemic the family will have a drive through service at New Zion Baptist Church cemetery, Saturday, April 25 at 10:30 am. Participants are asked to write your names on cards to be dropped into a box or a card will be provided for you. You are asked to please remain in your vehicle. Three sets of tornados in 2 1/2 weeks!  It hurts to hear of the storms, see the pictures, and to get first-hand reports from friends of destruction.  Please pray for all families touched by the tornados.

Pray for Caleb Estay, son of Landon and Alisha.  He has been hospitalized.  His problem could only be an infected knee, but his symptoms warranted the hospitalization to be sure.  Pray for answers soon.  Pray for the anxious family as they await the answers.  Thank God for facilities and personnel in place to help people during these difficult times.

 

 

 

Buddy Morris has been getting radiation daily.  Today, he will have a PET scan to check the current situation which will determine the future treatment.  Pray for Buddy, Eleanor, and Ellen.

 

 

 

Pray for people to stay faithful in following the suggestions offered for doing our part in fighting Covid – 19.  Let’s not grow weary, but instead stay alert.

My cousin, Scott Tolleson, got to leave the hospital after six days.  No more infection, so he is back at home.  Everyone was both thankful and tired last night.

 

 

 

Robin Alford, Walton and Peggy’s second daughter, is continuing to improve from her ankle injury.  Six weeks down and six more weeks to go.  Peggy and her sister, Polly, are still there to help Robin manage all the stairs.  Robin in looking forward to moving into a one-level home soon.  Thank you for your continued prayers for Robin.

 

 

 

Kami Frazier Bourque, a former student, who is studying to be a nurse has had Covid – 19, but is now home.  Pray for her as she continues her recovery and returns to nursing school.

 

 

 

Jameson McDaniel was born yesterday.  He weighed 5 lb. 3 oz. and was 18.5 in. long.  Celebrate the birth of this child with Austin and Brittany.

A resident of Amite, LA, Becky passed away on Monday, April 20, 2020, at her home. She was born September 26, 1950 in New Orleans, LA and was 69 years of age. Becky was a skilled and compassionate nurse, and generous and dedicated supporter of many philanthropic causes. She served on the boards of many community organizations over the years, both in Louisiana and her longtime home state of North Carolina. I am so pleased to share two reposts concerning special ladies.

 

 

 

My cousin, Scott Tolleson, is still hospitalized and seems to be improving.  As you pray for him, please pray for his wife, Brenda, who is having a terribly hard time adjusting to not being able to care for him.

 

 

 

David went to The Grove, new Oshsner in Baton Rouge, yesterday.  Due to the virus, that will be our destination for a while.  There were many precautions in place so the virus would not be spread.  I got to wait in the car again.  I enjoyed reading from the book of Mark this time.  David’s blood level was 10.5, another good number, the best one so far.  The nurse practitioner he saw yesterday asked about the lack of his walker.  She was totally amazed to see him.  She told him to continue doing whatever he is doing.  We thank God for each of these days and thank you for your many prayers.

 

 

 

Dianne Strickland

March 16, 1946 – April 18, 2020
Dianne, age 74, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family Saturday, April 18, 2020. She was a native of Kentwood and a longtime resident of Hammond. Dianne loved the Lord and was a member of Spring Creek Baptist Church for many years. Her family always came first. Dianne was a loving partner, mother, grandmother, and friend who is already dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Dianne is survived by loving partner, Ed Chehardy and her “favorite child,” Shadow; her daughter, Rhonda Strickland Hartis and husband Charles; daughter, Jeannie Strickland Sciacca and husband Tony; son, Jesse ‘Jay’ Strickland and wife Tammy; grandchildren, Jessica Hartis, Landon Hartis, Brayden Stephens, Cole Sciacca, Jordyn Sciacca, Justin Strickland, and Cody Wilson; great-grandchildren, Jace Strickland, and Conner Strickland; sisters, Frances Varnado Griffin, Celia Smith, and Rachel Coggins; and brother, Deloy Smith, Jr.

Dianne is preceded in death by her daughter, Deanna Dianne Strickland, parents, Deloy and Neva Smith, Sr.; cherished aunt, Willie Mae Sumrall; and great-grandson, Karson Husser.

Our church family is happy for the arrival of Renee Josette Cerise.  She weighed 7 pounds and 1 ounce and was 19.5 inches long.  Our church family may think of this child as the great granddaughter of George and Alice Faye Lee and the granddaughter of Brian and Lisa Piner.  One day when the Covid -19 virus is over, we will get to meet this precious gift from God at church.

 

 

 

Juanita “Nita” Russell Miller was diagnosed with the Covid – 19 virus yesterday.  Although Faibra Cade is not her only child, many of you may relate to “Nita” this way.  “Nita” is also  J..C. Miller’s step-mother and a precious lady of 94.  Please be in prayer for this sweet lady.

November 22, 1932 – April 18, 2020

A resident of Kentwood passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2020 at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond. She was born January 22, 1932 in Kentwood and was 88 years of age. She is survived by her 2 sons, Pascal J. Dean, Jr. and Michael B. Dean, Sr. and wife, Samantha; 2 step-daughters, Priscilla Lynch and husband, Richard, and Ora Ellen Nunnery; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her husband, Pascal “Pat” Dean, Sr.; parents, James David Cain, Sr. and Susie Easley Cain; sister, Mary Nell Woodard and husband, Virgil; brother, James David “Joe” Cain, Jr. and wife, Martha; grandson, Braden M.   1. Stay home except for ESSENTIAL trip for food, medicine, and doctors.

  3. Keep a 6 ft. distance between people.
  4. Wear masks when in public.
  5. Wear gloves for pumping gas, using ATM, etc.
  6. Get out and get some sunshine.
  7. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables.
  8. No groups of more than 10 people.

One of my first cousins who has Huntington Disease has been having a difficult time lately.  He is hospitalized in NE Louisiana because of an infection, but five of his six children live in Texas.  Pray for Scott Tolleson and his family.

 

 

 

Plan today what church service or services you want to watch tomorrow.  There are many available in our area and across the country.  I been watching some local, and not so local, services.  When I start a new one, David usually recognizes the voice and joins me.

Bro. Tom Higginbotham is progressing nicely at home.  One of his daughters is a nurse who can help some with his care.  While at home, on limited activity, Bro. Tom is able to contact the hospice families he works with.  God continues to bless him, even in difficult times.

 

 

 

Buddy Morris continues to be at North Oaks.  Eleanor says he is getting good care.  Pray for his healing during this time.’

 

 

 

The Hope Center, in the big curve south of Roseland, is now open in their new location and is ready to accept donations again.  They look forward to showing you their new facilities.  These “stay at home days” are good days for cleaning out some of our abundance and sharing it with others.

Please continue to pray for those with the Covid – 19 virus.  Even though most people survive, it is not a pleasant experience.  I pray for people to continue following the rules.

  1. Stay home unless absolutely necessary.
  2. Wear a mask when you leave home.
  3. Wash your hands for 20 seconds frequently.
  4. Our son urged us to add a 4th rule.  Wear medical gloves while pumping gas, using the ATM, pushing a grocery cart, etc.

David and I have been officially quarantined by our daughter for five weeks.  No one, but the home health nurse, has been in our house during that time.  There have been a few people here who stayed at a distance outside.  I feel like we will self-quarantine for a while when the rules loosen us.  So far, so good!  Thank-you, God!

Gladys Lee Bennett Burton a resident of Summit, MS, passed away on Monday, April 13, 2020.She was born August 26, 1931 in Amite, LA and was 88 years of age. She was an employee of B.C. Roger’s as a QC Supervisor in McComb, Ms. and later on retired and started sitting with elderly. She loved family get togethers and loved cooking for all. She enjoyed playing with her grand children and great- grandchildren. Special thanks to St, Luke Home Health and Hospice and a very special thanks to Shalanda Smith her sitter of McComb, MS. Who was always just a phone call away. She is survived by two daughters, JoAnn Daily of Greensburg, LA and Vickie Stogner of McComb, MS; 3 grandchildren, Tanya McDavid(Adam) of Hutto, Tx, Lindsey Aguila(Juan) of Huntsville, AL and Tommy Ballard of Amite, LA; 6 great- grandchildren, Savannah Ballard, Chase Ballard, Jonah and Jacob McDavid and Conner and Cameron Aguila.
