Sunday

“Here’s the lesson:

Use your worldly resources to benefit others and make friends.

Then, when your possessions are gone, they will welcome you to an eternal home . . .

If you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven? . . .

You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.”

~Luke 16:9, 11, 13 NLT~

Obituary for Don Dickinson’s mom:

Lorraine Smylie Jones, born July 31, 1934, to Ernest and Alma Smylie gained her Angel wings on September 10, 2019. Lorraine lived life to the fullest and was always cheerful. Her sense of humor was one of her greatest assets.
She married Lamont Dickinson and they traveled across the United States and also lived in Tripoli, Africa while he was in the Air Force. Being a beautiful woman that could turn heads wherever she went, she was never afraid of an adventure.
Lorraine was well known by all that frequented the Monmouth Drive Inn in Natchez, MS. She worked at the Monmouth as a carhop, then worked the window until it closed.
She later married Lyman Jones of Liberty, MS and together they built a camp on Lake Mary where they fished and had daily parties. She was famous for her hushpuppies, fried catfish and coleslaw. Lorraine was an excellent cook and was always asked to make “the dressing” on holidays. She was blessed with talent and could sew, crochet, paint, and always loved doing things with her hands. She loved all animals but especially loved dogs.
After enduring too many Lake Mary floods, they sold the camp and built a new home outside of Liberty where she remained.
After Lyman passed away, she opened a successful thrift store in Liberty, MS where she sold antiques, old tools, glassware, and the like. She never liked to be idle and was always busy until her age began to slow her down. She spent the final 10 months of her life at the Liberty Community Living Center and it was clear that her personality still won hearts.
Lorraine is survived by son, Donald Lamont Dickinson and wife Judy Newman Dickinson of Easleyville, LA; daughter, Deborah Gail Dickinson of Natchez, MS; son, Martin August Nickolauson of Oakdale, CA; three grandchildren, Stephanie Arnold; Anthony Dickinson; David Dickinson and two great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Ruby Smylie; and two brothers, Emerson Smylie and Scott Smylie.

Wednesday

We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Fall Food Round-Up – If you have not yet contributed to the food drive for the LA Baptist Children’s Home, please do so before it is too late.  The truck will be at our church early Monday morning.

Mission Opportunities – Meet at the church Saturday morning at 9:00 to paint inside a shoe box so children will smile every time they open the box.  Boxes, paint, and other supplies will be provided.  Just give of your time!  Items for the shoe boxes are being counted and organized by groups.  Let’s all look forward to filling the boxes at the end of next month.  You’ll have an opportunity to help paint, fold boxes, fill boxes, etc. until the end of next month.  I hope you will  contribute of your time.  We will also be collecting money for the shipping of the boxes.  That’s only $9.00, which is a bargain!  I know because I have shipped many boxes overseas.  I was never able to mail any package for only $9.00!  You can give your contribution to the church by marking it “OCC Postage”.  Thanks so much.

Tuesday

“That is why we never give up.

Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day.

For our present troubles are quite small and won’t last very long.

Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!

So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen.

For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.”

~2 Corinthians 4:16-18 NLT~

Please pray for Pete Hughes of Roseland.  He will be having open heart surgery tomorrow to repair five blockages in his heart.

Ben Smith of Greensburg is hospitalized in New Jersey because of gall bladder surgery.  He had a lot of infection and inflammation which cause the surgery to be done “the old way”.

Yesterday

Update on my Dad – Bill Ichter – August 29.
Dad is most likely in his last lucid moments. There are 32 family members here. This morning we all gathered around and sang together for about half an hour. After we sang It Is Well With My Soul, he said “Lord, you can take me now. We have all said our goodbyes, prayed together, and expressed our love. Now just my brothers and I are here with him. He is so longing to go home to be with Jesus! As much as it hurts to let him go, we know he’s ready. Thanks, everyone, for your prayers and messages, phone calls and visits. Please continue praying for all our family as we miss his physical presence in our midst. We cherish our memories of wonderful family times! How blessed we are!
