Shirley Kinzy Simmons

Shirley was a Family and Consumer Science teacher for 33 years at Kentwood High School. She enjoyed cooking
and teaching her students life skills. Shirley was a cheerleader sponsor for Kentwood High School for 17 years.
She also chaired homecoming activities including homecoming court, parades, and coronations. She was a 504 Resource teacher and sponsor of FHA for many years. Shirley was a lifetime member of the Alumni Association of Southern University of Baton Rouge, LA.
Shirley leaves to cherish her memories: her loving husband, Jerice T. Simmons; her loving son, Quentin J. Simmons (LaToyia) of Gonzales, LA; her loving daughter, Tebecca (Ann) Belanger (Mike) of Houma, LA; 3 step-children, Eric Matthews (Trudy) of Battlecreek, MI, Atrina Simmons and Ashanda Simmons of Chicago, IL. 8 grandchildren, Brenley Simmons (The joy of her life), Lacey Schenk (Zachary), Quinton Didone, Jasmine Matthews, Makayla Banks, Jeron Stark, Makyia Simmons, and Malik Wynn; 2 great-grandchildren, Conner Waddle and Colton Irving. One brother, Roy Kinzy; One uncle, Earl Bates; three aunts, Wilene Burris, Betty Rose Williams, and Mary Neil McGee; one brother in law, Louis Simmons (Theresa); a special cousin, Bernice Dickerson; a devoted loving best friend, Elmira Wilkerson, and a host of nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Ivy and Hazel Kinzy; and brother, James “Big Daddy” Kinzy.

  • Barbara Hutchinson is also looking for a couple ladies who use a rotary blade to cut out the wonderful totes that are made each year.  Six yard lengths of fabric will be cut to twelve inch pieces.  She will have all the preparatory work done, just need help cutting at this time.

Josiah spent the day playing & got to meet Kimber, a therapy dog.

I have spent the entire day saying, “We play with toys, NOT tubes.” 🤦🏼‍♀️ Although, I’m sure that’s very difficult for a 2 year old when they are covered in them & they get tangled up with every move he makes. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m just thankful he feels like playing!

He is feeling better but still having issues with his oxygen levels. All of the respiratory viral tests came back negative. They made some more adjustments to his vent today & will re-evaluate his respiratory needs tomorrow. Unless he needs more support for urgent reasons. His X-ray showed some deep congestion so he will be getting special treatments every 4 hours to try to break it up. We are still waiting to see if we are going to add additional treatments for his infection based on the culture reports…but it takes several days to get the final report back.

We have a long list of prayer requests today.

  • Paul Morgan, a former student, had a heart attack on the way home from work Thursday and will have surgery this morning at 7 A.M. in Baton Rouge.  Pray for Paul and his family.
  • Smiley Conerly has been back to the hospital briefly this week, but is back home.  He will meet with his oncologist Tuesday so learn what is happening next.
  • Donald Alford is still hospitalized at St. Tammany.  Your prayers are greatly appreciated.
  • Andy Taylor is still working to overcome pneumonia.  He is appreciative of your prayers.
  • Mrs. Ruby Dillon is having some eye issues.  Pray she can get some relief soon.
  • Kristy Alford is at home.  Prayers for her and her family are always appreciated.
  • Buddy Morris’ recent report is that there is “no cancer”.  Thank God for his continued positive reports.
  • Chuck Brister is getting a port today and will be leaving for MD Anderson for a week of evaluation.  Pray for Chuck and his family.
  • Josiah Huckaby is back in the hospital.  Pray for the infection to be properly treated and healed soon.

 

 

 

 

Marcia Darlene Wall Phillips

April 09, 1950 – February 11, 2020

Marcia Darlene Wall Phillips, 69 of Osyka died February 11, 2020 at her residence.  She was born on April 9, 1950 in Magnolia to the late J. C. Hilburn and Bonnie Raybourn Crawford.

She was a dairy farmer.

Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband Benton Wall; and her second husband Stroud Phillips.

She is survived by her daughters and spouses; Bonnie Annette Wall McMillan(Ronald), Molly Dee Wall Foster(Mike), and Melissa Phillips Petty(Tim); her sons and spouses, Joseph Benton “Joby” Wall and Daniel Phillips(Malissa); 21 grandchildren; 30 Great Grandchildren; 3 Great Great Grandchildren; sister-in-laws, Norma Jean Chase(Donald), Betty Wall, Dr. Lessa Phillips; a brother-in-law Chris Phillips(Ann); and her beloved pet cat Tommy George and Very special family and friend Alan an Vi Easley.

Visitation will be Thursday, February 13th from 5 till 9 PM and Friday from 10 AM till services at 1 PM all at Red Bluff Baptist Church in Greensburg, LA.  Interment will follow at Wall Cemetery in Gillsburg. Rev. Leroy McElween, Rev. Joe Day, and Rev. Sonny Travis will officiate the services.  Pallbearers will be Robert Easley, Austin Easley, Michael Wall, Austin Powers, Allen Easley, and John Brown.   • David and I keep on finding good buys and cannot resist them!
  • David is packing pencil packs (pencils, pens, erasers, sharpeners, highlighters, glue sticks, etc) and loving it.
  • It is uplifting to walk into church on Sunday afternoons and find OCC items that were left that morning.
  • The definition of encouragement – volunteers!  I’m being encouraged!!!
  • Doctor days are also “shopping on the way home” days.  We can usually stop at a couple of places and find something there waiting for us to purchase for OCC.
  • Thanks to all the classes for shopping as suggested.  We got socks, flashlight batteries, pencils, etc. yesterday.
  • I’m smiling because the shoeboxes reach an average of seven people when they are delivered.  They also reach lives as we shop and pack the boxes here.
  • I’m looking for an old, but functional toaster oven so I can melt broken crayons.  If you have a toaster oven you don’t need and any old crayons, please let me know.

Mrs. Shirley Simmons, a long-time home economics teacher at KHS, passed away.  I had the pleasure of working with her.  She was a great and caring teacher, a fine Christian lady who lived as an example every day, and someone who brought a smile to your face.  She will be missed.

Yvonne Bamber Jones

October 12, 1925 – February 03, 2020

Yvonne Bamber Jones passed away peacefully Monday morning February 3, 2020 at the Richard Murphy Hospice House in Hammond following surgery after a recent fall in her home. She was 95. Yvonne was born at Touro Infirmary in New Orleans in 1924 and was a lifelong resident of Kentwood. She was fiercely independent, and until her final weeks, lived alone in the home in which she was raised and the home in which she raised her family. She had retired from many years of service at the Kentwood Health Unit in 1980, a job she held while also managing to maintain a household and raise three children. She was blessed with a refined beauty at an early age with near perfect skin, complexion and hair. She was assiduous about maintaining that beauty well into her later years and so it was that even though her mobility became more challenging in her final months, she still insisted on bi-weekly visits to her hairdresser. The visits helped her feel younger despite her age. She grew up an only child in the depression, lost both parents before the age of 21, and was left to raise her daughter after her husband was deployed to Europe with the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles. But she and her husband overcame one adversity after another and they persevered and prospered. Perhaps otherwise modest in means, they were wealthy in family, friends and love. While a very private person, she and her husband had a small circle of friends with whom they shared the best of times. Whether it was an evening of dining and dancing, a trip to an out-of-state LSU football game, or the simplicity of enjoying the company of friends in the backyard, she lived life to the fullest. She was instinctively protective of her children and intensely loyal to others with whom she was close. She had a beguiling and mischievous nature from childhood that lasted throughout her years and her love of life was unbounding. She is preceded in death by her parents, Samuel E. and Edwina Strickland Bamber, her grandson, Brandon Jones and her high school sweetheart, best friend and love of her life, husband Claude J. “Hopper” Jones. She had no siblings. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Renee and Ron Fox who reside in Branson, Missouri, her son and daughter-in-law, Claude. J. “Hoppie” and Beverly Quinn Jones who reside in Amite, and her son and son-in-law, Ronnie Jones and Jim Outland who reside in New Orleans. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren. Aside from the love of her own children, she especially cherished and treasured the visits and calls from Karen and Karli. Their unselfish kindness and concern will forever live in her heart and soul. Their love truly sustained her and made her smile. She was also anxiously looking forward to reconnecting and spending more time with two of her other grandchildren who were returning to Kentwood–Laura, who was relocating from her home in Minnesota and Perry, who recently retired and has moved back from an extended residence in Georgia. The family wishes to thank the medical staff of AmeraCare and the nurses and staff at Richard Murphy Hospice House for their compassionate care and dignified treatment as well as Dr. Derris Ray for always being available without regard to time of day or day of week. The family also wishes to thank Christine Coleman who helped mom maintain her independence until her final weeks. Without Christine’s help mom’s quality of life would have suffered and she would have been denied her wish to live out as many of her days at her childhood home as was possible. And the family is especially appreciative of the responsiveness and attention of the Kentwood Police Department and the Rescue Squad who always showed up when mom called. Like her husband who predeceased her, Yvonne wished that her body be donated to the LSU Bureau of Anatomical Research so that others might benefit from any research conducted after her death. A memorial service and celebration of her life for family and friends will be held at McKneely Funeral Home, 501 Avenue G in Kentwood on Saturday, February 8th with visitation from 9:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. and a brief service following visitation. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Richard Murphy Hospice House, 1109 S. Chestnut Street, Hammond, Louisiana 70403 or a charity of their choice.

David and I saw two ladies from New Zion who asked for prayers for Donald Duncan and Harlon Toney.  Donald has had one problem after another.  Mr. Harlon has a leg problem.

 

 

 

Jeanna Lee-Newton learned late yesterday that she will be moved from Hood Memorial to North Oaks for a procedure today.

 

 

 

Bryan and Rita Tate have gone to Texas so he can be evaluated again as Bryan gets closer to the end of his treatment.  Pray for a good evaluation and safe travels.

 

 

 

Let’s continue to wrap our prayers around Donald Alford and Smiley Conerly.

 

 

 

David’s blood level as 10.7 yesterday!   That’s the highest it has been.  We are so thankful for doctors and medication and friends and strangers who have prayed for him.  God has been good to us even on the most difficult days.

Donald Lynn Graves II, a Database Administrator for DXC Technology, passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2020. Beloved husband of Cheryl Wattigney Graves. Father of Donald Lynn Graves III, Christopher Michael Graves, and Mary Elizabeth Graves. Brother of Dane Lee Graves, Derrick Miles Graves, and Kelly Rae Graves Collette. Son of the late Donald Lynn Graves I and Linda Rae Longnecker Graves. Also survived by 15 nieces and nephews, 25 great nieces and nephews, and several aunts and uncles. Age 60 years, a resident of Kentwood, Louisiana. Don, also known as ‘Chico’ or ‘Gus,’ loved to coach his son’s ball teams and attend his daughter’s pageants and recitals. Regardless of the activity, he made sure you always kept your eyes on the ball. He always had a large garden with corn, tomatoes, watermelons and cantaloupe he would give to family and friends, as well as, those in need. His passions included his family, horses, and laughter. Don was an avid believer in Christ and spread joy everywhere he went. His joy and love for life will be forever missed. A resident of Kentwood, LA, passed away on Friday, January 31, 2020 at St. Helena Parish Nursing Home in Greensburg, LA. He was born May 11, 1947 in Gloster, MS and was 72 years of age. He is survived by his wife, Charlene Spears Sterling; daughter, Wendy Sterling Aaron; son, Lewell Glen Sterling; son, Kendall Ott and wife, Deborah; daughter, Delilah Givens and husband, Jody; daughter, Anital Waller and husband, Jason; grandchildren, Kaeleigh, Kelsey, and Whitley Sterling, Sterling Aaron, Jonathan, Kelsey, Kendall, Jr. and Brandon Ott, Amber, Michael, and David Dugar, Cody Kyle and Lauren Waller; 12 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Eva Panzera and husband, Joe, Diane Jenkins, and Mary Ventress and husband, John; 2 brothers, Darryl Echols and wife, Maria, and Mike Echols. Preceded in death by father, Harry Sterling; mother, Vivian Echols; sister, Mary Elizabeth Banta; nephew, Joey Panzera; niece, Nicole Varnado Gillian; great-grandson, Dane Scott Dugar. Please continue to pray for Smiley Conerly who is hospitalized in Hattisburg and Donald “Red” Alford who is hospitalized in Covington.  Also, please continue to pray for the family of Harold Newman and others who has lost loved ones lately.  Thank God for the lives they lived and lives they touched.

I forgot to mention that we saw Chuck and Mary Ellen Brister while we were visiting at St. Tammany Hospital.  Chuck went home Thursday afternoon but will be seeing his oncologist soon for the proposed treatment plan.  Pray for Chuck and his family.

 

 

 

Smiley Conerly has been hospitalized at Hattisburg almost all week.  He has had several unexpected problems.  Pray for Smiley and Carol Jean.

 

 

 

Donald Alford had his first radiation treatment yesterday.  Pray for Donald and his family.  He is in St. Tammany still.

 

 

 

Pray for the many people with the flu and those around them who are trying to stay healthy.  Also. pray for those exposed to the Caronavirus.  Pray it will not be as serious as the CDC is considering it possibly can be.

 

 

 

Harold Newman‘s celebration of life service will be today at Harry McKneely and Son Funeral Home in Hammond.  Pray for this family too.

 

 

 

Stella Jo White Farriel

September 30, 1946 – January 28, 2020

Passed away peacefully in her sleep January 28, 2020,at the age of 73, at Heritage Healthcare in Hammond, La, where she resided since August, 2019. As a lifelong member of the Tangipahoa United Methodist Church, Stella graced the congregations with many years of beautiful music playing hymns on both the piano and organ. She Also played occasionally at Pine Ridge United Methodist Church. Stella worked at the Hammond Research Station – LSU AgCenter as an executive secretary for 46 years until her retirement. She remained an avid sports fan and always wanted to know if the Roos football team won under the Kentwood water tower. She never let a Saturday go by without asking if her beloved LSU Tigers won. And of course, her favorite color was purple. Stella’s love of reading kept the Kentwood Library busy with the many books they would get for her. She always had a stack to keep her occupied. Stella was preceded in death by her mother Willie Merle Phillips White and her father Clyde Moore White Sr. She is survived by her brother CM White Jr, his wife Patty (Pizzolato), niece Ashley Moore White Rosalez and her husband Michael Rosalez., Aunt Hilda Mundth, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews locally and across the country, and a host of friends. Stella’s family would like to thank the staff of Modern Hospice .. especially Sammy and Rosetta for their gentleness and kindness during the past several months. Heritage Healthcare provided a safe “home away from home” residence and the staff from the beginning were caring and courteous. Her family appreciates all the nurses and aides who attended to all her wants and needs. Per Stella’s wish, there will be no public viewing or service. Interment was at Woodland Cemetery in Kentwood, La., near her mother and father. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either of her two favorite institutions…The Kentwood Library, 101 Ave. F, Kentwood, La 70444, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

We were able to visit with Chuck and Mary Ellen Brister yesterday while we were visiting David’s brother, Donald, and his family yesterday.  Please pray for both families.

William Frederick “Freddie” Carter

March 01, 1936 – January 29, 2020

William Frederick “Freddie” Carter passed away peacefully on January 29, 2020 after losing his courageous battle with cancer. He was born on March 1, 1936 in the beautiful hills of St. Helena Parish where he was raised, made his life, and raised his family. He only left the farm a few years to serve his country as a US Marine, an honor he was extremely proud of. He was an insurance salesman for almost 60 years and a real estate agent and appraiser. However, he always considered himself a farmer, for he was happiest there. He is survived by his wife and “best girlfriend” of 57 ½ years, Glancy Palmer “Tiny” Carter; son, William Matthews “Matt” Carter (Kenya); daughters, Amy Lynn Carter and Cindy Ann Carter; granddaughter, Emma Lea Carter; and grandson, William Seth Carter. Preceded in death by his parents , Prentiss Henson Carter, Sr. and Rebecca Matthews Carter; brother, Prentiss Henson Carter, Jr.; and sister, Betty Jo Carter Koger. Freddie was proud of his many accomplishments, especially his hunting trophies that he gathered around the world. However, he was most proud of his children. Freddie was an integral part of the Greensburg Community where he served on many boards and organizations as well as a member of First Baptist Church in Greensburg. Visitation at First Baptist Church, Greensburg, from 9:00AM until religious services at 12:00PM on Saturday, February 1, 2020. Interment will follow in Greensburg Cemetery, Greensburg, LA.
