Prayer Focus

Today let’s pray for boys and girls who attended VBS (one or more days). Pray they learned about God’s Word and are able to attend church regularly now to learn more and more. I pray many made, or will make, a decision to follow Him the rest of their lives. Thank God for all the effort the people of each church have put into the lives of boys and girls this summer.

Obituary

Damien Thornton

Damien W. Thornton, of Zachary, Louisiana, passed away at home on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at the age of 46.  He was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on July 13, 1978. Damien was an avid deer and turkey hunter and took great satisfaction in showcasing his many trophies to all his friends and family. Most importantly, he was a loving and caring husband and father. It was his two precious daughters that brought him the most joy in life.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Burch Thornton, daughters Avery Paige Thornton and Emily Claire Thornton, mother Wanda G. Thornton, sisters Denee Aydell (Dusty) and Darcie McMorris (Jeron), nieces Grace and Genna McMorris, nephews Gavin McMorris, Camden Aydell, and Cason Aydell, and grandparents Leroy and Evelyn Sanchez Guitreau.

He is preceded in death by his father Douglas W. Thornton and grandparents Pete and Juliette Thornton.

There will be a visitation on Sunday, July 21, 2024 at Seale Funeral Home in Livingston (20335 Texas St, Livingston, LA 70754) from 12:00 to 3:00 pm with a rosary service starting at 2:00 pm. A private burial will be held at a later date.

Associational WMU

The ladies from a number of area churches will meet at FBC, Greensburg at 10 A.M.Saturday to learn about missions and specifically, how we might improve our gifts for Shoeboxes through Samaritan’s Purse. The 10 A.M. Meeting will be followed by a pot-luck lunch. I hope to see many of you there. (The leadership team will meet at 9:00.)

Yesterday, I stopped writing my post when a grandson called me. He’s never called so early so I was very surprised and wanted to talk to him. Then, right after his call, we had a another surprise when one of our granddaughters called. It was a good morning with a call from Georgia and from Texas!

Donald B. Woodard

February 19, 1941 – July 16, 2024

A resident of Denham Springs, LA, passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at Ochsner Health Center – O’Neal in Baton Rouge, LA. He was born February 19, 1941 in Independence, LA and was 83 years of age. He was a Master Florist and was the owner of Sullivan’s Florist for over 30 years. To know Don was to love him and he never met a stranger. He is survived by his former wife, Frances Richardson Scallan; 3 daughters, Elizabeth Mayer, Margaret “Marty” Krumholt  (Steven), and Donnea  Boutwell (Toby); grandchildren, Ivan Buckner, Zane Buckner, Chase Taylor, Marlee Roberts (Erin), Alanna Varnado (Casey), Cantan Varnado (Kenyze), Grayson  Boutwell, and Tylan Vance; niece that he considered his daughter, Ann Woodard Caffrey (Tom); great-niece whom he considered a very special friend, Taylor Ridgedell; and many other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lanice Woodard, Sr. and Myrtis Travis Woodard; special friend, William Hatfield; great-grandson, Roman Kelly McCullough; 2 sons-in-law, Dr. Randell Mayer and Roland Kelly Varnado, II; 3 sisters, Lucille Woodard Turner (Bo), Ruby Woodard Smith (Reuben) and Emma Peggy Woodard Goodson; brother, Lanice Woodard, Jr. (Betty). Don’t forget the WMU meeting Saturday morning at 10:00 at FBC, Greensburg. As far as I know, the meeting will focus on sharing ideas for the Shoeboxes we pack for Samaritan’s Purse. If your church packs boxes, I hope you will come and see what we have to share. Don’t forget to bring something for the pot-luck lunch that follows the meeting. Bring some girls and ladies who help so them can be encouraged.

My area received rain yesterday. We are thrilled! My area has missed out when other areas had rain and more rain. I know God is in control of the rain and am thankful He sent us rain yesterday.

Today, let’s focus on those who haven’t made professions of faith. No matter their age, it’s a good time for them to make that decision. Delaying often makes it harder to make the decision. Let’s pray for these decisions to be made.

Operation Christmas Child

We are slowly getting closer and closer to having what we need to pack 450 shoeboxes in a few months. Please check the list on the bulletin and on the red posters around the church. Thanks to all the individuals and classes who are supporting this awesome project. Packing of the shoeboxes will happen in October for out church. In November we will again serve as a collection site for our area. What a responsibility, but what a blessing!

Let’s focus our minds and hearts on God and how he loves us. Let’s be reminded there are evil people around. Yesterday, the world saw another example of how the devil can cause people to do horrible things. Today, let’s pray for the families of the man killed and those injured. Pray for all those who were in attendance. Pray to for the family of the shooter. Pray, pray, and pray some more for our country and our people. May God bless our country and our people. A resident of Amite, LA, passed away on Friday, July 12, 2024, at St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington, LA. She was born February 8, 1943, in New Orleans, LA and was 81 years of age. She is survived by her daughter, Tina Vining Lewis (Dreux); 3 sons, Darren Vining (Shauna), Donovan Vining (Carol), Edwin J. (Scooter) Vining, III; 12 grandchildren, Blayne Lewis, Brady Lewis, Gabrielle Lawrence (James), Gavin Vining, Gage Vining, Ashlyn Vining, Reagan Vining, Laken Vining, Colin Vining, Lily Kate Vining, Caroline Branch and Eden Vining; son-in-law, Gary Lewis. Preceded in death by her husband, Edwin J. Vining, Jr.; parents, Frank and Lillie Pfleeger; and brother, William Pfleeger. Yesterday, David and I traveled a leisurely loop through the countryside yesterday stopping at certain stores to look for items to pack pencil bags. We had an enjoyable day and found a number of stores had what we needed. Both the traveling and the shopping went well. We enjoyed the break in our routine and met some nice people.

Most clerks think we are shopping for grandchildren. One clerk asked if we were working on shoeboxes and said she had packed them in a former church, Tangipahoa Baptist Church.. What a small world!

I hope you get to spend some time shopping too. We made a leisurely trip, but you can just look around in the stores where you are shopping or shop at a more local store.

We are in need of people to sharpen pencils. Call me to get some pencils ready for you to sharpen this week. I will have them ready for you.

Hurricane Beryl

It’s hard to believe the category one storm could travel on far on land and cause so many tornadoes and power outages. Pray for all the people without power on these very hot days. Pray for those who are working to help others recover from the damage.

Outdoor Workers

Pray for those in our area who have to work outside. I remember my daddy coming home on his lunch break and spending part of the allotted hour to get a shower and a fresh set of clothes. Find your own ways to help your body stay a little cooler on these very hot days.
