Former Northshore DOM Lonnie Wascom passes away at 72

SEPTEMBER 10, 2020

By Baptist Message staff

HAMMOND, La. (LBM) – Lonnie Wascom, director of missions from Northshore Baptist Association from 2011-2018, died Thursday, Sept. 10. He was 72.

Born in Baton Rouge, Wascom was baptized at New Bethlehem Baptist Church near Live Oak when he was nine years old. When he turned 15, he began his service in vocational ministry as the assistant music director at Judson Baptist Church in Walker.

During the years that followed, Wascom served churches in California and Louisiana, and earned degrees from Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, California State University in San Francisco, California, and Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in Mill Valley, California (now Gateway Seminary in Fremont, California).

After 40 years of serving churches, he was called as the director of missions for Chappapeela, LaTangi and St. Tammany Baptist Associations in 2004. Seven years later, the three associations voted to merge.

Two months after his Oct. 1, 2018, retirement, Wascom became pastor of Walker Baptist Church.

Wascom said in a Sept. 7, 2018, article in the Baptist Message he wanted to finish strong in his faith journey after his retirement.

“If God favors me, He’ll let me go out like Elijah,” Wascom said in the article. “I do not want to burn out; I want to burn up. I want to see people saved. I want to see our churches revived. I want to see an awakening before I die.”

Steve Horn, executive director for Louisiana Baptists, said Wascom had been a mentor to him since his first year in ministry in 1992. Horn’s wife, Linett, also developed a special friendship with Wascom’s wife, Linda, when they previously both taught at Hammond Eastside Elementary School.

“He was so very kind to me as a young pastor,” Horn told the Baptist Message. “Lonnie has been faithful at every level of LBC life. We mourn his loss today. In fact, we had a meeting today as the committee on nominations. Lonnie chaired this committee last year. Here again is the reminder that life is but a vapor.”

Don Pucik, who succeeded Wascom as Northshore Baptist Association DOM, said he was an encourager to anyone he encountered.

“Whether it was a new believer in a church that he was helping, or a longtime co-worker in the Lord’s harvest, Lonnie cared about people,” Pucik said. “I am thankful for his friendship and the many times that he shared his heart, insights and experience with me.”

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Today, I will begin with two more obituaries.

Susan Renee Stringer

October 07, 1957 – September 03, 2020

It is with sadness that the family of Susan Renee Stringer announce the unexpected passing of their dear daughter and sister. While her health failed suddenly, we have the gift of knowing that she is playing the piano and laughing joyously with her earthy father in her place in heaven. Her foundation in life was her faith so we celebrate her journey and her eternal life of pure joy in Heaven. She was a daughter, a sister, and a niece and cousin. She is survived in death by her Mother Louise Smith Stringer, her sister and brother-in law Kim and Michael Baylis, her sister and fiancé Missy Stringer and Gary Blades as well as many beloved cousins and an Aunt Peggy Chaney and Uncle Allen Hicks. She was preceded in death by her father Dr. L.E. Stringer, and both sets of grandparents.

Susan was born in Regensburg, Germany while her father was a pilot in the military and resided in Baton Rouge Louisiana at the time of her death. She was 62 years old. Susan was a part of her community and was loved by everyone she met and her generosity was limitless. She always had time for everyone, and never failed to befriend and help others in need and make them feel special.

Susan was a concert pianist and her music was used to serve God as well as reach the hearts of others and share love and pure happiness through her beautiful melodies and masterful renditions of all types of music. She played many venues but also volunteered and played for Nursing Homes around the holidays and during Covid-19 she played outside in her neighborhood bringing joy during the lockdowns and assuring people did not feel alone or miss the beauty of live music.

Susan also was an avid animal lover and was active in PAWS and other pet adoption programs. She fostered dogs until they were adopted and had seven foster dogs at her passing. She never tired of loving and caring for her four legged children and celebrated the personalities of each. Susan never turned away a pup or dog in need.

She was gifted in so many ways and worked with hospice serving those at their most vulnerable moments and had a gentleness and grace that drew others to her. She reached out to all and did everything with excellence accompanied by humility.

Susan will be dearly missed by all who knew her but she would want everyone to know that she was more than prepared and eager to meet her Lord and Savior. She had run her race and was prepared to receive her reward of eternal celebration. A private family celebration service will be held and we ask only for prayers and pleasant remembrances.

(The last time I remember seeing her, she was in high school.  When I don’t see students after high school, I think of them as still being that age.  Thankfully, the obituary gave me lots of updated information.)

Timothy was a devoted family man, father of three and stepfather to one. He was a man who made friends wherever he went.

I was asked yesterday to give some idea of what we need/could use in the “shoeboxes”.  It’s wonderful to hear someone saying they want to make purchases and to request some guidance in shopping, even requesting a list here today.  I am so excited!

  • 3″ balls suitable for boys or girls – 50
  • coloring books – 100
  • Mardi Gras beads – whatever amount you have available
  • Punch balloons – 50
  • Beach balls, not inflated – 50

Your help in packing shoeboxes is greatly appreciated!  Think of the children when they open the shoeboxes!  What a blessing each item is to them!
