December 27, 1930 – October 31, 2017

 

A resident of Independence passed away on Tuesday, October 31, 2017. She was born December 27, 1930 in Independence and was 86 years of age. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Richmond “R.E.” McElveen, Jr.; daughter, Karen McElveen; son, Loren McElveen and Stella; daughter, Aimee Millhouse and Jeffery; 4 grandchildren, Jennifer Stabile Evans and Cody, Matthew McElveen and Shelly, Griffith Millhouse and Susie and Hayley McElveen and Joseph; 6 great grandchildren, Gavin, Chandler, Mylee, Ben, Grayson, and Lilly; and her sister, Marie Edwards. John B. Jones, MBA, CHSP

August 21, 1963 – October 31, 2017

 

A resident of Port O’Connor, TX, passed away on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at Citizens Medical Center in Victoria, TX.  He was born August 21, 1963 in Independence and was 54 years of age. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a member of Lawrence Baptist Church, Loranger. He worked in hospital administration for 35 years. He was involved in Habit for Humanity of Victoria, TX and the planning committee for the YMCA. He won multiple first place awards in cooking competitions, winning. He is survived by his wife, Kimberly Cauley Jones, Port O’Connor, TX; 2 daughters, Brooke Jones Richardson, and husband, Chris and Summer Jones; 1 grandson, Daniel Tassin, Jr.; sister, Debra Shields, Loranger;  mother, Lillian Osborne, Baton Rouge. Preceded in death by his father, Lee Jones; sister, Tammie Daigle; 3 brothers, Dorrence Jones, Lee T. Jones, and Carl D. Jones; and his grandparents, John and Estelle Wilkinson and Charles and Eva Jones. A resident of Richton, MS, passed away on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at the Bedford Alzheimer’s Facility in Hattiesburg, MS. She was born December 12, 1944 in Franklinton, LA and was 72 years of age. She is survived by her daughters, Rebecca Dunaway and husband, Hilton, Richton, MS, Jennifer Temple and her husband, Danny, Summit, MS, Robin Crowe, Mt. Hermon, LA, and Johanna Lawrence and husband, Ricky, McComb, MS; 12 grandchildren, Amanda Cook, David Cook, Lloyd Dunaway, Nicole Dunaway, Sarah and Drew Hopkins, Danielle Sharp, Cory Temple, Jenna and Josh Melton, Daniel Doherty, Kaile and Kyle Young, Dale Kent, Autumn and Brandon Cole, Audrey Lawrence and Jade Use`; 18 great grandchildren; and sisters, Marie Elliot and Emily Spears. Sarah Elizabeth (Watson) Pendergast

Sarah Elizabeth (Watson) Pendergast of Independence, Missouri, formerly of Louisiana, Texas, Massachusetts, Alabama, and California, passed away on October 29, 2017.

Sally was born July 27, 1943, in Lafayette, Louisiana, to Roy and Anna Watson as the twin sister of Molly. She and Molly were raised in Arcola, Louisiana, on Hickory Knoll Farm.

Sally met her husband, Jim, while attending university in Hammond, Louisiana. They were married in 1962 and had four children, James Edward, Jr., John Brittain, Joseph Patrick, and Thomas Roy. She and Jim raised their children in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Texarkana, Texas. Later, she and Jim lived in southeastern Massachusetts and Daphne, Alabama. After Jim’s passing in 2010, she lived in Santa Barbara, California and Kansas City, Missouri.

Sally was devoted to her husband and family. As a dedicated homemaker she supported them tirelessly and always encouraged them to do their best. She taught her children the value of creativity and imagination. She imparted upon them the importance of fairness and respect for others.

Sally was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Texarkana, Texas. She helped manage religious education for the children of that congregation and with Jim acted as a eucharistic minister to the elderly.

Sally was a teacher of both religion and the arts. She taught dance in a studio in her home and English at the local public school. She was a talented designer, illustrator, and writer. She was a member of a singing troupe and the Garden Club. Throughout her life, she was an eager and passionate student of design, religion, and spirituality.

Sally is survived by her sister, Mary (Molly) Anna Stagg of New Orleans, Louisiana, her four children and their wives, Jim and Betsy of League City, Texas, John and Claire of Santa Barbara, California, Joe and Janine of Gex, France, Tom and Gracie of Kansas City, Missouri, and six grandchildren, Megan, Macey, Mae, Quinn, Morris, and Max.

A memorial service will be held at Royer Funeral Home, 101 SE 15th Street, Oak Grove, Missouri, at 1:00 PM, Saturday, November 4, 2017.
Visitation hours are 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, immediately preceding the service.

Operation Christmas Child

  • Thank-you to all those who generously gave items or money to purchase the items we will need in out shoeboxes.
  • Thank -you to those who helped fold boxes, write and cut labels, apply and organize boxes, group and count items as they were delivered, repair a broken wheel on our transporting cart, organize items for packing, supplying money for postage, etc.
  • The packing party will be Saturday at 4 P.M.  Bring your Christmas spirit and a sweet Christmas treat to share with other volunteers. Be a part of packing the shoeboxes filling them with hygiene items, school supplies, and special gifts.  Know you are giving many children and their families an opportunity to learn about Jesus in their own language.  (Each shoebox is estimated to impact seven (7) people with the knowledge of Jesus.
  • FBC, Kentwood will be a drop-off location again this year.  The dates are November 13-20.  Times will vary, so check a previous post here or the OCC website.  I’ll also post the times again as we get closes.  Individuals, churches, businesses, clubs. schools, etc. are invited to “drop-off” their boxes in Kentwood as the boxes begin their journey to individual children 2-14 years old.
  • The shipping cost is $9.00 per box.  As a parent and grandparent who has shipped boxes internationally for the past twenty years, let me tell you $9.00 is a real bargain.  You can include your check in a box or can pay online.  If you pay online, you will be sent a tracking form by email that can be printed and placed on a box to help you know where the box is on the journey to a child.  Boxes will travel to needy children all over the world.
  • The items in the boxes are wonderful gifts, but the opportunity to be saved is far greater!  Thank-you for your participation.
  • Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.  If I cannot answer your questions, I have contact information so we can get answers from someone else.

What a beautiful weather day Sunday was!  Church services and activities added their joys.  It was our pleasure to be able to walk around, assist a little, but mainly to get to visit and enjoy all the young families at church tonight.  We were so blessed!

Operation Christmas Child – 

Tuesday at 9 A.M., we will meet to put labels on boxes, move tables and chairs, etc. as we prepare for the packing party which will be Saturday at 4 P.M.  Come help us this week.  Be a part of “sending Jesus to lots of little children”.  We have all the items we need for the boxes.  I will post the total for the OCC postage that has been collected when that new total becomes available.

Georgia Barnett – 

 I will also update the Georgia Barnett poster before Wednesday.  I’m thankful for the gifts that have been given so far.

 

Pray for David as he has to drive to Baton Rouge and then New Orleans for two minor appointments.  The stress of the day will be driving in both cities the same day.

Operation Christmas Child – The packing party is at 4 P.M. Saturday.  It is such a blessing and a lot of fun to have an early Christmas party and work together to pack the shoeboxes that will be sent to children to give them gifts and to introduce them to Jesus.  What an impact you can be!  If you are available to help move tables, label boxes, etc, this week, please contact me to set up a day and time to do so.

 

We are working to complete our Georgia Barnett Offering.  See the chart by the organ to know what progress we have made.

 

If you don’t have a church to attend today, I invite you to First Baptist Church in Kentwood.  We have Sunday School at 9:15 and worship service at 10:30.  Stop by the welcome table for information and a gift if we are new to you.

Mrs. Betty Catherine Hatchel is in therapy at Hood Memorial.  Keep praying for improvements.

Mr. James Allen has been at the hospital in McComb for a couple days.  Thankfully, he is doing better than when he was admitted.

Jeana Lee-Newman is headed to more Surgery Monday.  Pray for her and for her family.

I would like to share this report I received Thursday.  A lady who faithfully goes to the parish jail to be a Christian witness said that Thursday, a week ago, she and the other volunteers were going to the jail knowing they would not have enough paperback Bibles  to distribute to the inmates who would ask for one that day.  When they were gathering in the parking lot, David drove up with more Bibles!  They were thankful you were a part of the solution on the very day Bibles were needed.  Thank-you for you continuing donation of paperback Bibles to this ministry.  If you can bring them to David and me, we will see they get into the right hands.

Thomas “Laddie” Lawrence Hudspeth, Sr.

March 31, 1930 – October 26, 2017

A resident of Amite passed away surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at Canon Hospice in Jefferson. He was born March 31, 1930 in Morrow, LA and was 87 years of age. He was a hard working, dedicated, leading salesman with Watkins Inc. and a landlord who helped thousands of people in our community. He was an active member of St. Helena Catholic Church and was a Catechist Leader in his younger years. He leaves behind his loving children, Thomas Lawrence Hudspeth, and wife, Kathy, Debra Ann Hudspeth Ricks, and husband, Robert, and Ted Joseph Hudspeth and wife, Mary; grandchildren, Shawn Hudspeth (Zandi), Le’Anne Hudspeth Malnar (Jeramy), Emily Hudspeth Smith (Daniel), Evan Hudspeth, Wayne Ricks (Gennipher), Kevin Ricks (Stephanie), Ted Hudspeth, Jr., Christopher Hudspeth, Nicholas Hudspeth, Natalie Hudspeth, and William Hudspeth; great grandchildren, Hunter and Haydan Hudspeth, Anna, Ava, and Lane Malnar, Raelyn and Rhys Ricks, and Eliyanah Smith; brother, Charles Hudspeth; and sister, Fleeta Chautin. Eight days until we pack the Operation Christmas Child “shoeboxes”!  It takes lots of preparation to have everything purchased and organized so we are ready to fill the boxes.  Thanks to those who made purchases and to those who have helped in the organizational process.  I think of the children who will receive the boxes and work a little harder.

The collection week for shoeboxes is November 13-20.  Churches, schools, clubs, businesses, and individuals are invited to leave their boxes at FBC, Kentwood.

Bro. Jeff Mizell continues to have problems with his throat continuing to get worse.  He has resigned as pastor of Line Creek Baptist Church so he can rest his throat.

What a great “birthday party” the “young” ladies of our church had at The Cafe yesterday!  Our next party will be November 28th.  Mark your calendar.

 

The children’s mission class will meet tonight at 6 P.M.  Please have you children/grandchildren wear their green vest.

 

Don’t forget to purchase some Christmas cards an affix stamps to the envelopes.  We will be taking them to the Tangipahoa Parish Jail the first week of December.  The cards can be turned in at the Lottie Moon Tea.

Mrs. Anne Hurst has been recovering at home and plans to be at church Sunday.  Let’s pray she will be well enough to be there.

Fannie Fortenberry Seal of Franklinton fell causing the several facial fractures and requiring nose surgery.  Pray she will have a good recovery without much more pain.

A resident of Kentwood went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 22, 2017 at her home. She was born December 15, 1927 in Spring Creek and was 89 years of age. She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church. She is survived by daughter, Oneida Bridges Carruth, Greensburg, Kathleen Bridges Brown and husband, Mack, Mt. Hermon; son, Gary Wayne Bridges and wife, Linda, Amite; grandchildren, Wylie Smith and wife, Eudora, Round Rock, TX, Minda Raybourn and husband, Kevin, Mt. January 09, 1992 – October 21, 2017

A resident of Kentwood, passed away on Saturday, October 21, 2107 at home. He was born January 9, 1992 in Hammond and was 25 years of age. He was an IT Technician by trade but his passion was music. He was a self taught musician, composer, and performer who played multiple instruments. He had a natural gift to bring music to life and would play for anyone, anytime, any place. He was dearly loved by his mother, Judy Langford McElveen; uncle, Bobby Langford; brothers and sisters, Michael and Jennifer McElveen, Debbie and Luke Simeon, John and Rachel McElveen, Sonia and Jeremy Blalock, Jeanine and Bart Matthews; nieces and nephews, Brodie and Destinee, Emily, and Sawyer McElveen, Riley and Shalayne, Hannah, and Julianah Simeon, Anthony and Jayde McElveen, Dawson, Brayden, and Lathan Blalock, Evienne Schwartz and Ezra Matthews; great-niece, Rilynn Simeon.
