Today, let’s pray for all those in Florida who are working today to recover from or help others recover from Hurricane Milton or in North Carolina, Georgia, etc. from Hurricane Helene. Pray for safety for the workers and a sweet spirit of caring for others.

Note: If you would like to help the families who have had loses during this time, the best ways to support them would be through Samaritan’s Purse or Louisiana Disaster Relief. Give a check. It WILL be used to help the current victims, including damaged or destroyed churches.

Nelson “Tojo” Ballard

September 20, 1952 – October 6, 2024

Tojo’s Obituary

Nelson “Tojo” Ballard passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 6th, 2024 in Washington, Pennsylvania after a brief battle with cancer. Tojo was born to Larry Ballard and Ruby King Ballard in Amite, Louisiana on September 20th, 1952. Tojo was preceded in death by his brothers Robert “Bobby” Ballard and James “Chubby” Ballard. He is survived by his sister Sharon Elaine Cash, many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins. To several of his nieces and nephews, Tojo was their first driving instructor in cow pastures and on back roads. “Uncle Tojo” was a taxi to the store and would spoil his favorites with coke and candy whenever he could. Tojo was responsible for a few kids first sip of beer – Schlitz Malt Liquor. Tojo was always happy to pull up in his car and have long driveway conversations, catching up on all the news and gossip with friends and family. Tojo was even known for stirring up new rumors and gossip before heading home. Later in life, when his disability no longer allowed him to drive and make his rounds, he enjoyed watching LSU and New Orleans Saints football games, NASCAR races and playing Checkers, Connect Four and other board games with friends and family members who would drop in to visit him. Tojo was loved and treasured by all who had the pleasure to know him. He will be deeply missed. Visitation will be held at McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, from 11:00AM until religious services at 1:00PM on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. Interment will follow in Briar Patch Cemetery, Loranger. Prayer Focus of the Day

Today let’s pray for the people of Florida as the hurricane begins to move on across the peninsula and into the Atlantic again. Let’s pray people used their best judgement and made good decisions and are safe even if there is much damage.

Thank God for those who will be moving in today and in the coming days to repair the electrical service, to fill the food and fuel needs, help with health issues, repair roads, home, businesses, churchess, etc.

Pray for those who live in Florida and those who are traveling to their rescue.

Pray for Josh Ballard who is leaving in his truck to pull the trailer used by the feeding unit from a temporary location to its new temporary location in Florida as soon as it is safe to do so.

Pray for the Baptist Disaster Relief Teams, Samaritan’s Purse, and the local National Guard who are already in the area and ready to move into the most needed locations.

Update

Mrs. Mildred Birch is going to move to Greensburg today or tomorrow depending on paperwork. In Greensburg Hospital she will receive rehabilitation services. Please continue to pray for her health and for her family as they share their time with her and her needs.

Pray for our senior adults who seem to have falls more often as they age.

Pray for Kenneth and Yvonne Birch who continue to have health concerns and for their family members who help with their care.

Please pray for Bro. Joe and “Miss” Barbara Baugh as they also both are dealing with health concerns.

Pray for Amy Tolar as she has begun treatment in Florida and for her mother-in-way, “Miss” Naomi as she is helping Amy and Russ.

Pray for all the others we have been praying for or for those we need to add to our prayer lists.

Other needs. Pray for needs specific to your location – things such as signs and lights needed, roads with much needed repairs, children that manage to get out of yards and onto roads, those who play and walk on the highway, wildlife, stock, and farm equipment on the highways, school zones and traffic, vehicles that travel too fast or with mechanical or driver impairment, etc.

Prayer Focus Today Disaster Relief Teams

Today, let’s say prayers for the Baptist Disaster Relief Teams from 13 states that are working in areas of the southeast that had so much damage from the last hurricane. While I was attending a WMU meeting in Alexandria yesterday, I visited with Bro. Stan Statham who heads the Louisiana Disaster Relief team. He has just returned from Georgia and North Carolina and was working to get ready for another trip. He and the team had fed hot meals to people in central Georgia and in the North Carolina mountains. He said his team was the first outsiders seen in N. C. since the hurricane. He said the needs were overwhelming and is restocking in plans to return for more cooking and sharing about God. He said we can best help him and the team by providing funds for them make purchases in quantity.

Health Issues

• My cousin, Fran, had a busy day yesterday. She had excess fluid and AFib, but no blockages. Pray for her as she continues to be in hospitalized.
• Mrs. Mildred Birch is still in Baton Rouge General. She had a better day yesterday. Pray everything works out soon for her to be moved to Greensburg.

Obituary

Dennis Morgan Travis

September 14, 1949 – October 5, 2024

Dennis began his earthly walk on September 14, 1949 and embarked on his walk with Jesus on October 5, 2024 at the age of 75 years of age. Dennis proudly served our country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War era and was a history enthusiast. He milked cows for many years and won awards as an outstanding dairyman and for milk production. After 20 years of dairy farming, he sold the cows and went to work at Southeastern Louisiana University where he retired. Dennis enjoyed baseball cards, coins, country music, and was endeared to the Alamo and its legacy. If you saw Dennis, he usually had his loyal dog, Crockett, with him everywhere he went. Dennis served as a board member at Oak Forest Academy and was a Yellow Jacket super fan. He did not miss a home football game and was committed to running the chains until he was no longer able. Dennis faithfully served Jesus at Montpelier Baptist Church where he served as a deacon until the time of his death. Dennis is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Linda Wilson Travis; three children, Randy Travis (Carlye) of The Woodlands, TX, Delynn Travis Spinks (Kelly) of Montpelier, LA, and Dr. Brett Travis (Brandi) of Kenner, LA;  10 grandchildren, Caleb Travis, Bridges Travis, Cort Travis, Bobby Spinks (Brittany), Danny Spinks, Justin Jenkins, Kailee Spinks Neal (Jonathan), Jack Allen, Barron VonAntz, and Gabriel Travis; and one brother, Brian Travis (Molly). Dennis is preceded in death by his parents, Ray Devon Travis and Cassie Inez Bridges Travis Tate; stepfather, Edward Randall Tate; and one brother, Cory Devon Travis. A celebration of life will take place at Montpelier Baptist Church on Saturday, October 12, 2024 with visiting at 12:00 Noon until memorial services at 2:00PM. Focus of the Day

Today, let’s try to pray for each person we see when we see them. A quick, little prayer naming the people as we see them. This will be easier for some because they may not see one person at a time. In that case, pray for them as an appropriate. An example, might be to pray for everyone in an English class, everyone parking at the pharmacy, or everyone will enter the doctor’s office today.

Also, let’s pray for special groups around the world, such as all those who are still suffering because of Hurricane Helene, all those 0n I-55 between your home and your destination, or for those in the path of the next hurricane.

Sandra Nell Wicker a resident of Kentwood, LA, passed away on Friday, October 4, 2024 at The Lodge at Tangi Pines in Amite, LA. She was born November 10, 1941 in Clayton, LA and was 82 years of age. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She loved working in her yard and in her flowerbeds. She put up great fight but is now in the arms of her savior Jesus Christ. She was a faithful member of Wilmer Missionary Baptist Church. To remember her, anyone who knew her knew she was one tough lady who worked hard on their dairy farm while also raising 5 children. She taught us how to work and instill all we needed to learn to survive in our adult lives. All who knew her even not blood kin, she was called Moma Nell or Aunt Nell. When you would visit her home, she would have to give you something before you left. It could be a plant or flower from her yard, food or etc. She was a second Moma, friend and mentor to many. She is survived by her daughters, Debra K. Lowe and Cathy S. McIntyre; sister, Margie Parsons; 1 brother, William (Bill) Parsons; grandchildren, Eric McIntyre, Clay McIntyre, Ashley Wicker, Ryan Wicker, Joshua Porta, Jason Harris, Jessica McIntyre, Rocky Graham, Jr., Brandon Graham, Krystal G. Good Morning!

Focus for the Day

First, let’s remember those who are victims of the hurricane a week ago. Let’s remember to give if we cannot go or provide items directly. Samaritan’s Purse has been there since and serving as needed. You can give and know your funds are used to benefit those with a need.

Pray for the victims who experienced the storm and now experience life without having a good supply of food, water, homes, etc. David just heard on the news that the temperature in some areas will be freezing in a few days. Pray everyday needs can be meet soon.

Pray for the families of the many who were killed by the storm. Pray for them as victims continue to be found daily.

Today, let’s also focus on some things we are thankful for.

My safety and safety of family, friends and neighborhood, home, church buildings, something to eat each day, water on demand, electricity. technology, etc. (not necessarily in the order listed).

Deaths

David had a cousin to pass away earlier this week. Jo Ann Lee Gomezz of Chesbrough passed away in Slidell. There is no obituary at this time. Please keep her family in your prayers.

Beverly Ruth Oliver Coburn

August 2, 1939 – October 1, 2024

Beverly Ruth Oliver Coburn, born August 2, 1939, in Roseland, Louisiana, to James Oliver and Gladys Seibert Oliver, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family. Beverly was a cherished daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. A story often shared by her family is that when she was brought home from the hospital, she was so small that she fit into a shoebox. Despite her small beginnings, she had a large heart and enjoyed supporting those in the family and community.

Beverly was active in school and 4H, where she developed lifelong skills and passions. Known for her intricate crochet and sewing work, she lovingly created detailed pieces for her family and friends. Another of her great loves was baking, which began in her school days when she won first place for her homemade rolls. This love carried throughout her life as she often prepared meals and desserts for her family. She also participated in an annual baking competition at the Tangipahoa Parish Library System, where her desserts frequently earned recognition.

On May 1, 1964, Beverly married the love of her life, Allen Jay Coburn. Together, they shared 50 wonderful years of marriage until his passing in 2015. The couple raised two children, Edward Allen and Ivy Maureen, and Beverly devoted herself to her family and home. She supported Allen’s carpentry business while also creating a warm and loving environment for their children.

When her children were older, she became a substitute teacher and teacher’s aide at Oak Forest Academy. She then began a long and rewarding career with the Tangipahoa Parish Library System on September 13, 1993. For many years, she worked as a library clerk, particularly enjoying planning and delivering children’s story time at the Amite branch. In 2008, Beverly transitioned to the technical services department, where she oversaw the setup and removal of books and resources. She would often say that all books “began and ended” with her team in technical services. She retired from the library on December 16, 2022, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service.

In retirement, Beverly found joy in her garden, canning her produce, reading, and spending time with her family. She also took great pride in following the sports and activities of her grandsons. A lifelong sports fan, she especially enjoyed watching LSU games and the Little League World Series. Her beloved dog, Coco, was a faithful companion during these years.

Beverly was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Jay Coburn; her parents, James and Gladys Oliver; her brothers, Ivy and Charles Oliver; and her sisters, Helen Oliver Sharpe and Gladys Oliver Bernard. She is survived by her son, Edward Coburn, and his wife Kelly of Benbrook, TX, and their sons, Allen and Eric; her daughter, Ivy Coburn, and her wife Shelly of Mableton, GA, and grandson Dr. Scott “Bucky” Alford. She is also survived by her brother, Jimmy Oliver, and his wife Janie of Kansas; her sister, Edna Oliver Leonard, and her husband Sam of Walker; and her brother-in-law, Everette Bernard of Hammond.

Services will be held at McKneely Funeral Home in Amite on Saturday, October 26, 2024. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by services at 3:00 p.m. Graveside services will follow at Arcola Roseland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Allen and Beverly Coburn Endowed Scholarship. Richard “Ricky” Benton Field

February 19, 1953 – October 2, 2024

Richard “Ricky” Benton Field, age 71, peacefully passed away at his home in Amite, Louisiana, on Wednesday, October 2, 2024. He was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on February 19, 1953, to Richard Kent Field and Patsy Green Field. As a young boy, Ricky professed his faith at the Amite/Arcola First Presbyterian Church as a child and attended the Hayden Grove Church of Christ in his later years of life. He was a graduate of Amite High School and Southeastern Louisiana University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business. Ricky loved sports his whole life and spent many years as a coach, LHSAA basketball referee, and Southwest Region Babe Ruth baseball umpire. He had a passion for music, especially rock and roll, and he had attended an immeasurable number of concerts in his life. He worked for the Tangipahoa Parish Clerk of Court’s Office in Amite for 25+ years and most recently J&B Industries. He was married for 41 years to the love of his life Alison Field. He is survived by his wife Alison Field. Three children; Chris Bordelon (Rae Lynn), Dr. April Kemp (Jonathan), Richie Field (Kelly); Six grandchildren; Grace, Gretchen, Hayden, Allie Kate, Preston, and Raegan. Two sisters; Tanya (Bill) and SuEllan (Carmon), nephew; Brad and niece; Mandy. Two step-sisters, Kathy (Roland) and Kristy (Lane), and a step-brother, Kenny (Natalie). Today, let’s continue to pray for those who were in the path of Hurricane Helene. Hopefully, this day be the one when some missing people are located alive and as well as can be expected.

Barbara Ann Cutrer

October 7, 1947 – October 2, 2024

A resident of Amite, LA, passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at her home. She was born October 7, 1947 in Franklinton, LA and was 76 years of age. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Jesse G. Cutrer; 1 daughter, Dianna R. Richard and husband, Nolan Richard, Jr.; 1 son, Christopher M. Doke and wife, Dawn and 1 stepson, Jeffery A. Cutrer; brothers, Albert Corkern, Terry Corkern and Henry Corkern; 6 grandchildren, Jason L. Richard, Jaime Cutrer, Johnny Cutrer, Seth M. Prayer Focus for Today

Let’s continue to pray for the leaders of our country and the world as we hear so many rumblings of WWIII. May God steer these people away from this. May we all learn to trust in the Lord in situations like this. Reread the verse above.

Robert Wilson is recovering from surgery and will possibly be released to come home today.

Surgery Scheduled

Nathan Daniels will be having back surgery to relieve back pain Thursday in Baton Rouge. Let’s pray for all to go well so Nathan can get some relief.

Harrell Norman Cutrer

September 20, 1948 – September 30, 2024

A resident of Kentwood, LA passed away on Monday, September 30, 2024, peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Gail Blades Cutrer; daughter Vanessa Thibaut and husband Pierre Thibaut; son, Landon Cutrer and wife, Valerie; 3 grandchildren, Michaela Thibaut, Lexie Thibaut and Hadley Cutrer; brother Sherman Cutrer; nephews, Sherman Cutrer, Jr. and Joseph Cutrer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harrell Bascomand Norma Cutrer, and sister-in-law, Jewel Cutrer.  

Harrell was born September 20, 1948 in Magnolia, MS and was 76 years of age. He attended St. Mary of the Pines in Chatawa and Kentwood High School.  He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Southeastern Louisiana University. Harrell was a member of the Iron Workers Union, helping build the Nuclear Power plant in St. Francisville, Louisiana. He also worked as a carpenter and boiler maker and eventually retired as a planner at Valero St. Charles. He was a member of Greenlaw Baptist Church and previously served as Training Union Director, taught Bible drills, helped construct the church fellowship hall, and participated in home mission trips. After retirement, he returned to his roots of raising cattle, which he thoroughly enjoyed. 

Visitation at Greenlaw Baptist Church from 6:00 until 9:00 PM on Thursday, October 3, 2024, and from 8:00 AM until religious services at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 4, 2024.  Services conducted by Bro.
