  • Coach Charles Baglio, affectionately known as “Coach Bags,” left an indelible mark on the world of sports and education, but more importantly, on the countless lives he touched. His career spanned over five decades, beginning with an impressive 34 years at Independence High School, where he served as head coach for 22 years. Coach Bags led his team to nine district titles and two state championship appearances, but his greatest pride was in mentoring and shaping the young athletes who looked up to him.
  • In 2002, Baglio joined the LSU Tigers as Director of External Relations, where he played a key role through three head coaches, three national championships, and numerous bowl victories. After 21 years with LSU Football, he retired with a legacy of dedication, humility, and passion for the game. Known for his sharp mind and competitive spirit, Coach Bags also enjoyed an active retirement, playing golf, working out at North Cypress Fitness, and savoring trips to the casino. His most cherished moments, however, remained the relationships he built, leaving behind a legacy of inspiration and excellence.
  • The love of his life, Margaret Ann, was always by his side, and his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy. Coach Bags will be deeply missed, but his impact will be felt for generations to come.

(I taught with “Coach Bags” for eight years. He was always polite and kind to me.)

Women on Mission

One of the missionaries we talked about was Elizabeth Elliott. I was a child when her husband and others missionaries were killed in the Amazon. I have memories of this. If you are my age or older, you may remember this too. Elizabeth Elliott worked hard to minister to those who killed her husband. She used the events that had happened to tell many others about Jesus. What Christians heroes!

I’ll give you the dates of upcoming events when it gets a little closer.

Girls on Missions learned about a MK, missionary kid, whose family serves to tell others about Jesus. MK’s learn so much as they serve with their parents to tell others about Jesus.

I am thankful for you! If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t be on this computer this morning sharing about people and activities I am thankful for.

SATURDAY

2 Peter 3:10-12

“But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in….”

End of the Week

It’s Saturday. Have we used our week wisely? It won’t come back and give us another chance. Let’s use this day wisely. If we don’t, it will be gone and never come back.

Make sure we accomplish the things we need to for this week. Today can be a busy day if we didn’t work hard earlier in the week.

Prayer Focus for Today

Pray you do the important things today to make the week an accomplishment. These things are not always chores at home. Sometimes it is more like a phone call or a visit. Sometimes it is Bible study to draw closer to God. Think carefully, what do you need to accomplish today? Now, do those things.

Coach’s Obituary

U.S. Veteran

It is with deep sadness that we share with you the passing of an extraordinary man – Elton A. Shaw. There are no words strong enough to describe the impact that his life has left on this world. It is fact that all people will die, but the truth is, not all will live. As for Elton “Coach” Shaw and the 91 years he spent on this Earth – he LIVED!

He was born to loving parents, Henry and Hazel Shaw, in Kentwood, Louisiana on May 21,1933. Elton Shaw began to make his mark on this world at an early age. He was the youngest of seven siblings. His great talent and passion for sports was undeniable. He graduated from Kentwood High School in May of 1951 with All State honors. He was the only player in the history of Kentwood High School to be selected All-State for three consecutive years. While attending Kentwood High he served as class president and received the Superintendent’s Award as Outstanding Parish Athlete – the only time in Tangipahoa Parish history that this award was presented.

After high school Elton continued his education at LSU on a football scholarship where he was selected to the All-Southeastern Conference Team. In 1953, Elton joined the US Army and served his country in Korea. After just 18 months, he rose to the prodigious rank of Sergeant First Class at the young age of 21. In 1955 he returned to SLU to continue his Education. While at SLU, he played football and was soon drafted to none other than the Green Bay Packers.

Elton turned his love for football and people into a career accepting his first professional position as Assistant Football coach and History teacher at Assumption High. After one short year, at the young age of 25, Elton was appointed head football coach of the High School football team. Throughout his coaching career he served as Napoleonville Head Coach, Ponchatoula High Head Coach, Head Coach and Principal of Valley Forge, SLU Defensive Coordinator, Head Coach and Athletic Director of Kentwood High and Jewel Sumner High School. Coach made Louisiana history by winning more than 200 games, 11 district championships and two state championships as a football coach.

In August of 1953, Elton married the love of his life, Jewell Fowler of Kentwood. They built a beautiful life throughout their 53 years of marriage. Together they brought four sports loving sons into the world, Ronald (Donna), Thomas (Kim), Lance and Mark.

One Hall of Fame worthy career just wasn’t enough for Coach. His dedication to the community continued when he joined the Juvenile Program for the District Attorney’s office handling every juvenile case in the 21st Judicial District for 31 years. Elton served as a mentor and changed the lives of so many youth and adults alike. His tall stature, polished dress and strong handshake made a lasting impact on each and every person he came into contact with. He was truly, one of a kind.

Eventually, Elton exchanged his hat as “coach” for his favorite one as – Poppy. If you knew Elton, you knew his family was his number one team. He had 10 grandchildren that his world revolved around – Amy, Russell, Gavin, Chance, Matt, Christopher, Cody, Travis, Morgan and Adam. The grands eventually went on to make him into a great! The next generation of 14 beautiful “great” grandchildren brought so much joy into his life, Alex McLaughlin, Mickey, Katelyn, Joseph, Avery, Ruby, Thomas, Sophie, Ashton, Benji, Katherine, Junior, Kennedy Shaw and Adrian Hart.

Although his earthly journey has come to an end, because of his love for Jesus, we know his heavenly life has just begun. Our hearts will forever selfishly ache for not being able to pick up the phone and hear his voice just one more time or meet him at the cafe for just one more cup of coffee – but until we can meet again, keep Coach’s legacy alive through service, generosity and love.

Elton was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jewell, two sons Lance and Tommy, parents Henry and Hazel, five sisters, Kathryn Kuss, Lucille Brown, Doris Yarborough, Darence (Libby) and Mavis Shaw and brother, Herbert “Cush” Shaw.

Please join us to celebrate the extraordinary life of Elton Shaw on Friday, October 18th for visitation from 5:30pm until 9:00pm at First Baptist Church of Kentwood and Saturday, October 19th from 9:00am until religious services at 11:00am. Interment will follow at Woodland Cemetery in Kentwood. Reception following at FBC Kentwood. Pallbearers will be Russell Shaw, Christopher Shaw, Gavin Shaw, Cody Shaw, Matthew Shaw, Travis Shaw, Morgan Shaw, and Alex McLaughlin. Honorary pallbearers will be Joseph Shaw, Thomas Shaw, Ashton Shaw Junior Shaw and Benji Shaw. McKneely Funeral Home, Kentwood, in charge of arrangements. Friday

Prayer Focus for the Day

Today, let’s pray for all those such as police, firemen, and ambulance drivers, who are on standby for the next situation they will need to focus on. They live each day in expectation of what they might be doing within the next hour. Let’s pray they are up to the next situation, the one after that, etc. I can make a list of those I know who fit this category. Instead of me listing them, you make your own list and then pray for them individually and as a group.

Hurricane Victims and Relief Teams

The storms were not yesterday, but the damage and the heartache is still there for so many people. Possible ways to help them: Donations to Samaritan’s Purse or Louisiana Baptist Disaster Relief.

I know many people want to load some things in a car and try to get to a place on a map, but in my opinion those who are well trained and experienced as well as working with a big network of people can do the best job. It’s like letting the firemen tend to fighting fires and police deal with criminals. The big groups also know what and where to make their purchases in volume, as well as having all the equipment needed to address various problems.

What can we do? Send our support and prayers.

Continue to pray for Bro. Darryl as he has follow up exams for the surgeries he has had.

Pray for Bryan and Rita Tate during some difficult times. I have another similar situation on my heart. Pray for this couple too.

I also have an unnamed request I would appreciate you praying about.

Add your own new requests to youR running prayer list.

Reminder

Women on Mission

We will have our monthly meeting Sunday at 5:00 and our mission activity on the 26th.

Thank-you for “tuning in” today.

I know your prayers mean so much. Almost daily, someone reminds me of praying for David when he was so sick. God brought David’s health back to him!!! Miracles happen to people of today just like Biblical days. God uses doctors, praying friends, special caregivers who even come to the home, etc. to help people get better.

Luke 12:3

Prayer Focus of the Day

Today, let’s pray for pastors. We often see them on Sunday, but do not realize all the places they visit in a weeks time. I know I cannot name them all but I will name a few – counseling for those seeking salvation, counseling for those considering marriage, counseling for newly weds, counseling for those considering divorce, church members with various problems to discuss, pastors from miles around, counseling for newcomers to the area, counseling for potential pastors, new pastors, and pastors who have served many years, home visits to newcomers, home visits to those who visited his church, home visits to those who are homebound, home visits to families who have lost a loved one, etc. The list goes on and on and on. Let’s pray for those who pray for us when we are not even aware of it. Let’s pray for those who counsel members and potential members every week. Let pray for those who counsel other pastors. These men need our prayers daily for guidance, strength, knowledge, decision making, wisdom, love, etc.

Ladies and Girls on Mission

The cookie delivery scheduled for Saturday is still on Saturday, but the location will change due to Coach Shaw’s service in the sanctuary. The girls and ladies will meet in the Lighthouse instead of the Fellowship Hall.

Ladies’ Bible Study

The Pine Ridge Bible Study will meet one again today. I think there will only be two more weeks of study. It is certainly a good review for some ladies and a fantastic introduction to new Bible information for others. Kathy has been a good teacher and loves all the ladies. Today we will begin with lunch at 12:00, review our homework, and begin the next lesson. Join us at just before 12:00 if you can.

Children’s Ministry

The children’s ministry of FBC is under the leadership of a new staff member, “Miss” Shelly. She has years of experience which was evident when she first spoke at a morning worship recently. If you have children or grandchildren who are not in regular worship, bring them for a visit at FBC.

Have a great day.

Show your love and God’s love to others today.

TUESDAY

Prayer Focus for Today

Today, I would like to thank God for the many friends he gives us, Some are there for Bible studies, some for the children we can enjoy, some for the talents they can share with us, some because of our talents we can share with others. I thank God for the many friends in my life.

Also, continue to pray for those who were visited by the two recent hurricanes. Just because you don’t see them on the news daily, doesn’t mean people are all living their normal lives and there are no major needs. Also, continue to pray for and support Samaritan’s Purse and the Baptist Disaster Relief Teams who are serving there today with multiple teams and for many days and weeks to come. Thank God for these dedicated people who go where they are needed and do so on short notice.

Adult Sunday School Lesson for This Morning

Acts 7:22-23

Visit a Sunday School class this morning. (I cannot give you the time for Sunday School in all our local churches, but at FBC, Kentwood, Sunday School begins at 9:15 and there are many classes to choose from.) Come a little early so Bro. Darryl or a church member can direct you to classes and let you choose the one you wish to attend today (or any Sunday).

As you finish reading, I suggest you think of a song you learned at a church or in your home. Hum it or sing it aloud or to yourself. Also, check an online service today. FBC, Kentwood, LA will broadcast services live on Facebook a 10:30 A.M.and 6:00 P.M. on Sundays and then at 6:00 P.M. on Wednesdays. Visit us online first if that makes you more comfortable.

I love to share with you each day.

SATURDAY

John 14:27

Prayer Focus Today

Today, let’s remember caregivers. They might be older people or even younger people, neighbors, relatives, friends, or simply pray for those whose families hire them to care for someone. Situations vary, but helping those in need of care is a blessing to that person and often to family members of that person. Never forget, the caregivers often learn they are blessed so much too.

Others

I’ve been forgetting to mention a couple of people.

Mrs. Mildred Birch is home and welcomes company. Her family also encourages us to visit her at the Greensburg hospital and is so thankful for your prayers for her.

My cousin, Fran, is better and will soon be transferred to rehab. Thank you for praying for her and her family.

Josh and Mallory Womack Maggio are thrilled to announce their first child, as son, Carter, has arrived. Their families are thrilled too. Carter was born October 8th, 2024 at 11:37 A.M. weighing 7 lbs.2 0z and measuring 20.5 inches long.

Rebecca “Becky” Lynn Raborn Davidson

August 27, 1954 – October 6, 2024

Rebecca Lynn Raborn Davidson (Becky) transitioned from her mortal life to her eternal home in heaven on the evening of Sunday, October 6, 2024, at the age of 70. She passed away at her home, surrounded by her loved ones, who had diligently and lovingly cared for her in the months, weeks and days prior to her passing. She was a member of Emmaus Baptist Church in Tickfaw, La.

The oldest of four children, Becky was born in McComb, MS on August 27, 1954, to Bobby and Fay Raborn of Kentwood, La. Being the oldest child of her family set the standard of taking the lead in any given situation, which she continued to do throughout her lifetime. She was often the first one to offer her time and talent to anyone inside her family or community.

After graduating with honors from Valley Forge Academy in Louisana, Becky continued her education at Southeastern Louisiana University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting. With a lifelong love of learning, Becky chose a career in the field of education, where she excelled in the classroom for over 18 years. When out shopping or dining, she was frequently spotted by former students, who never hesitated to seek her out to tell her of the impact she had on their lives. During her illness, many students visited her or sent messages to thank her for the kindness, love and guidance that she so eagerly extended to them in her classroom.

Becky married Paul Davidson, the love of her life, on December 10, 1997. Their love for each other knew no boundaries, and that love was extended when they beautifully blended their two families, welcoming each other’s children into their hearts with unconditional love and creating a home full of love and acceptance.

After retirement, Becky eagerly became a homemaker; a job she excelled at in every aspect. She took great care to manage her home much like one would manage a 9-5 job and was insistent on maintaining immaculate flower gardens and exquisite home décor. There was no shortage of family gatherings at Becky’s home, with laughter ringing out from the pool during summer parties and the welcoming warmth of food and gifts at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Her hobbies included scrapbooking, reading, traveling the world making memories with her husband, and collecting Christmas Nutcrakers – a collection that was beautifully and proudly displayed in her home throughout the year.

Becky also had a great love for animals and was Mommy to many dogs throughout her life. Of special note is Petty, the beloved labradoodle turned canine caregiver. Petty unwaveringly held vigil by Becky’s side throughout her illness. He also played doorman and greeter to every person who visited, ushering them to Becky’s beside and jumping onto the bed next to her to serve as protector.

She was quick to remind everyone that her greatest hobby and most important job was loving her family. She considered it an immense joy to be a mother and grandmother and gained an extra zest for life upon the arrival of her great grandson, Grayson Paul, with whom she shared a very unique and special bond. Grayson behaved as a little adult during his Ninny’s illness – often reminding everyone that Ninny was sick and needed special attention, and rather than spend his time playing opted to snuggle with his great-grandmother.

Becky is preceded in death by her daughter, Amy Lobre, and her mother, Fay Hart Raborn.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Davidson of Tickfaw, La; her daughter, Amanda Lewis of Tickfaw; bonus children: Pricilla Davidson, Paul Davidson, Jr., Karen Davidson Ward, Debra Davidson Smith, Beth Gill Davidson Billot, Paula Davidson, and Kyle Davidson; grandchildren: Mallory Lewis (Todd), Brooke Stilley, Aaron Chambliss (Jennifer), and Sydney Stephens; great grandchildren: Lathan, Mason, Zayn, Grayson Paul and Kanon. She is also survived by her sister, Cindy Raborn of Covington LA, Bob Raborn of McComb, MS, and Bill Raborn of Summit; nieces and nephews: Dustin Stafford, Dana Thomas, Connor Raborn, Clay Raborn, Clint Raborn, and Brody Raborn; sister-in-law Missy Lester of McComb, MS.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Ms. Antoinette Pea, who first came to Becky as a hospice aide, but quickly found a place in Becky’s heart by making her feel safe and cared for. Becky looked forward to Antoinette’s visits, which frequently occurred even on days she was not scheduled to visit. Through their bond, Antionette became a source of comfort, strength and reliability for the entire family.

Services will be held at Brandon Thompson Funeral Home in Hammond, LA on Saturday, October 19, 2024, with visitation from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and celebration of life at 4:00 p.m.
