Thankfulness – Day 11 – Today, I am thankful for all the many men and women who gave of their time to serve in the armed forces to protect our great country.  We wouldn’t be who we are today without you!  Happy Veteran’s Day!

 

 

 

Today,   I have a prayer request for the next 13 weeks.  Pray for Micah Simpson and his family as he leaves today for 13 weeks of boot camp for the Marines.    What a great way to celebrate Veteran’s Day!

 

 

 

Today, let’s pray for Emilee McKenzie who had a fall over the weekend.  She injured her arm.

 

 

 

Many people are sick with colds, flu, and viruses.  These problems are easily passed from one person to another.  Everyone, take care of yourself and your family.  The weather we are facing in the coming week will probably only allow others to be sick.  Be sure you are properly stocked with fuel, food, water, medicine, etc. before the coldest weather comes our way.  Also, check your pipes, vehicles, pets, etc.

Thursday Addition

Mrs. Marilyn Phillips, one of our neighbors, has had heart issues and received two stents.  Please keep her and her family in your prayers.

 

 

 

Ora Lee Wilson was attacked by a pit bull while walking a block from her house this afternoon.  She was bitten twice on her elbow.  She has received treatment in Amite and is back home.  Let’s thank God for protecting her from more injury.  As I sometimes say, “It could have been much worse!”

 

 

 

Ferrie Gene Blackmon had some spots removed from her lungs so they can be checked.  Pray for her and her family.

 

Obituary for Kenneth Carl Istre

Kenneth Carl Istre closed his Bible for the final time on November 4, 2019 in Dallas, Texas. His daily life for the past 90 years was a living testimony of his faithfulness and love for the Lord. He was a man that enjoyed family, people, and life.

Kenneth was born on Feb 8, 1929 in Jennings, Louisiana to Ivy Joseph Istre and Betty Valdetero Istre. He attended Jennings High School and during this time his desire to help people and share his faith was evident. Kenneth began to lead singing at his local congregation and soon accompanied his father on revivals. On one occasion, at Hayden’s Grove in Amite, his father became ill and Kenneth not only led the singing but delivered the sermon. The bonds made at Hayden’s Grove would span well over 70 years.

While in high school, Kenneth excelled receiving many athletic awards which led to football scholarship offers at the collegiate level. After seeking advice from his parents and hours in personal prayer, he chose to focus in the field of ministry and education. This led him to Harding College, Kentucky Bible College and East Tennessee State University where he received a bachelor degree. He continued his ministerial studies receiving a Master of Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary.

Kenneth married his childhood sweetheart, Betty Jane Reddell, on December 26, 1950. Their 39 years of happiness started in Johnson City, Tennessee where Kenneth stepped into the pulpit and began his life of fulltime ministry. In 1953, Kenneth and Betty moved to Dallas, Texas where he began mixing his talents of teaching and preaching. He was not only a fulltime minister, but was a teacher and administrator at East Dallas Christian School. His love and caring for people brought him great success. In 1964 Kenneth and Betty returned to South Louisiana as their ministry in Amite began. Kenneth also taught high school, coached, and enjoyed farming during his time in Amite. In 1979 Kenneth and Betty returned to Jennings to be with their aging parents. Kenneth returned to his alma mater, Jennings High School, where he was a teacher and coach while preaching at Abbeville Church of Christ. After the passing of Betty in 1990 Kenneth continued teaching, preaching and taking care of people in need while living in Jennings.

Kenneth married Patsy Green Field on November 26, 1991. Their 26 years of happiness began in Jennings and then Watson and Hammond. Kenneth taught high school, college and preached at Hayden’s Grove and Shiloh until his health declined in 2015. Kenneth also became involved in the lives of Patsy’s children and grandchildren. After the passing of Patsy in 2018 Kenneth moved to Dallas, Texas where he continued to be a great encourager to others.

Kenneth’s ministry spanned over 64 years, from 1951 to 2015. His enthusiasm for sharing God’s word never seemed to grow dim. The churches he served as minister were Locust Street Church of Christ, Johnson City, Tennessee; Piedmont Church of Christ, Dallas, Texas; Amite Church of Christ, Amite, Louisiana; Big Creek Church of Christ, Arcola, Louisiana; Hayden’s Grove Church of Christ, Amite, Louisiana; Abbeville Church of Christ, Abbeville, Louisiana, and Shiloh Church of Christ, Loranger, Louisiana.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents Ivy Joseph Istre and Betty Valdetero Istre and his brother Richard Ivy Istre.
Preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Jane Reddell Istre, Kenneth is survived by their children Kenneth Dwaine Istre and wife Natalie, Kathleen Istre Alonso and her husband Roland, Kristine Istre Yeldell and her husband Layne, 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by his second wife Patsy Green Field Istre, Kenneth is survived by her children Richard Benton Field and his wife Alison, SuEllan Field Moore and her husband Carmon, Tanya Field Mearse and her husband Bill, her 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Kenneth also was the last living member of the Founding Board of Directors for the Christian Youth Encampment. He spent many summers there working and teaching to meet the needs of area youth. This was always a very special place for him as well as Betty and the children. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to:

Buddy Morris has been undergoing tests in Ochsner Hospital in Baton Rouge.  He should be able to return home today.

 

 

 

Pray for Fay Gehringer and her sister, Sue Gill.  Fay has a vision problem.  Sue is recovering from a surgery she had Tuesday.

 

 

 

Kenneth Birch is having physical therapy and improving from knee surgery.  Please continue to keep him in your prayers.

 

 

 

Pray for Smiley Conerly and others who are seeing doctors and searching for answers.

 

 

 

I want to end my post by saying I had gamma knife brain surgery eight years ago.  I had no idea what my life was going to be like after that day.  I now know God had many things planned for my future!  I’m thankful for each day.  Each one is a blessing!

Tomorrow is the first day of November.  Let’s consider our blessings this month.  I’m sure your list is as long as mine.  Remember to be thankful in November all all year long!

My daughter donated her kidney 34 days ago. She is having another surgery today to repair a incisional hernia from the kidney transplant. Surgery is at 2:00 at Tulane. Prayers needed for my daughter Kasey.

 

 

 

Jessie Jane Lowery Carden Head

September 17, 1932 – October 27, 2019

She was born September 17, 1932 in Amite, LA and passed away on October 27, 2019 at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond, LA. She had resided at Landmark Nursing Center, Hammond, LA for the past two years. She was an avid gardener and seamstress, enjoying crocheting, knitting embroidering, and quilting. She was a life long member of Friendship Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughter, Larkie Ann Carden Ellzey and husband, Russell; also three grandchildren, Cheryl E. Scamardo and husband, Kenny, Donna E. Fairburn, Russell “Rusty” Ellzey, Jr. and wife, Sarah; Four great granddaughters, Samatha, Catalina, Anna Lynn and Amanda Sue Fairburn and their father, Jason Fairburn; sister-in-law, Lydia Lowery. Preceded in death by her parents, Jessie and Larkie Cutrer Lowery; her first husband, Thomas Carden; her husband, Roy Head; brother, Jessie “Donald” Lowery; and nephew, David Lowery. The family would like to offer a very special thanks to Landmark Nursing Center Staff especially the 200 hall nurses and nursing assistants for their compassionate care. Edward “Seed Tick” Louis Havard, Sr.

Edward “Seed Tick” Louis Havard, Sr., a resident of Greensburg, LA, passed away on Friday, October 25, 2019 at his home in Greensburg, LA. He was born April 3, 1942 in Gloster, MS and was 77 years of age. He was a retired electrician for IBEW.995. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carolyn P. Havard; 2 daughters, Teresa Needham and husband, Wayne and Jennifer Wascom and husband, Randal; 1 son, Edward L. Havard, Jr. and wife, Joyce; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Joann Achord, Wilma Venable and Hazel Allen. Preceded in death by parents, Steve Havard and Marie Lofeus and J.D. and Nita Redmond; 2 sisters, Billie June Crawford and Virginia Redmond; 1 brother, Edward Redmond. Dollie Frazier has asked for our prayers as she has had problems with both of her eyes.  Her news now is that the doctors have seen improvement.  Thank you for praying.  Please continue to do so.

 

 

 

Debbie Wilkinson is in St. Tammany for an evaluation for her current condition.  Let’s pray the tests reveal progress in her treatment.

We     God did it!  We packed 350 shoeboxes this morning.  Other boxes have already been turned in.  Lots of  gifts and lots of necessities will be given to boys and girls.  They will also be introduced to Jesus!  What a wonderful ministry of Samaritan’s Purse!  Thank you to all those who helped us this week finish this portion of our work.  

Coming Soon – FBC, Kentwood will be a drop-off location for shoeboxes November 18-25th.  If you pack shoeboxes and live in this area, we would be happy to get your box on to the next phase of the journey to boys and girls.

Rev. John Fulda entered heart surgery knowing it might now be successful.  He passed away just before 6 A.M. yesterday.  He was known to many as a Church of Christ pastor and/or a chorus teacher at Amite High School.  He was a positive influence in many lives.  Arrangements have not been made yet because of many family members who will be traveling home for the services. I’ll post an obituary when one is available.

Project Day for Missions – Today – Painting the lids of “shoeboxes”

This is an easy project, but people are necessary!  Boys, girls, men, and women from 6 to 106.  No talent necessary!  Just be available in the fellowship hall of FBC, Kentwood tomorrow morning at 9:00.  We’ll have another painting day soon.  We’ll also have to work on folding boxes and applying labels.  I look forward to the joy of working together.  (Our packing party will be the last Saturday of October.)

I received a message that three members of one family will be there.  How many from your family will help?

 

 

 

Update on shoeboxes:

I’ve been counting items and grouping them for our packing party.  I think “excited” is a good word to describe how I feel about sending “shoeboxes” again this year.  Each box costs nine dollars to ship.  Your support in providing postage will be appreciated.  Mark your envelope “Shoebox Postage”.

  • Maddie’s Miracles (written yesterday)

Maddie will have a fine needle biopsy in the morning on a lymph node in her neck that has been there for a while. Doctor was waiting to see if it would go back to normal size and it hasn’t so they are going to check it out. She has the best doctors who truly care about catching any and everything that goes on with her. Prayers are appreciated and we know that God has her in the palm of HIs hand. God is good ALL the time. We should have results next week. Thank you prayer warriors!

I have been discharged from the hospital. Dropped my prescriptions off at the pharmacy. Tomorrow morning we will be headed home. Thanks everyone for the prayers and nice words of encouragement. Thanks to my wife Nikki Smith, my mother in law Patsy Lea and my mom Elaine Hue Smith for making the 20hr drive to be with me during my surgery. It meant the world to me. I can’t forget all the great friends that are up hear with me for helping out and checking on me.

Wednesday – Another Obituary

Gaylon Earl Cutrer

October 11, 1938 – September 11, 2019

Mr. Gaylon Earl Cutrer, 80, of Kentwood, MS, passed from this life on Wednesday, September 11, 2019, at his residence.  He was born on October 11, 1938, in Kentwood, LA, to Marshall T. and Ruth McGregor Cutrer. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Kentwood; served his country in the US Army; worked for many years as the owner of Cutrer’s Slaughter House; was a school bus driver for Tangipahoa Parish School System for 25 years; and enjoyed hunting, fishing, archery and primitive survival skills, finding arrow heads, and spending time with his family. He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, Grady Cutrer (Sr.), Percy Cutrer, Amos Cutrer, Douglas Cutrer and Frank Cutrer; and infant brother, Raymond L. Cutrer.

Survivors are his wife of 57 years, Ruth Myers Cutrer; sons, Ernest Earl “Joe” Cutrer (Lisa), Raymond Reid Cutrer (Brandy), and Kevin Kyle Cutrer (Cris); daughter, Sareptha Ellen “Cissy” Cutrer; grandchildren, Shane Joseph Cutrer (Shelby), Rafe Galen Cutrer, Remi Kathryne Cutrer, Reese Nicole Cutrer, Kevin Patrick Pinell, Lindsay Nicole Pinell, and Christopher Andrew Pinell; great-grandchildren, Kevon Pinell and Kaleb Pinell; nephews, Donald Ray Cutrer, Grady Cutrer, Jr. (Cheri), and Marshall Cutrer (Georgette); niece, Debbie Cutrer (Ricky); and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, family and friends.

Visitation will be on Saturday, September 14, 2019, at First Baptist Church of Kentwood in Kentwood, LA, from 9:00 AM until the time of service at 11:30 AM with burial to follow in the Spring Creek Cemetery. Rev. Darryl Miller and Rev. Bill Boulton will be officiating the services with Catchings-Sharkey Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Pallbearers are Grady Cutrer Jr., Marshall Cutrer, Shane Cutrer, Christopher Pinell, Russ Tolar, and Tom Tolar. Honorary pallbearer is Rafe Galen Cutrer.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of St. Tammany Parish Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mr. Cutrer’s name may be made to FBC of Kentwood Building Fund or the charity of your choice.
