Josiah has been working hard & it’s paying off! He sat & played at his activity table for almost 4 mins unassisted on Saturday. His previous record was around 1 min.

We set up a play area in his room Friday…hoping it would be a bit of motivation to work on sitting up & crawling. I guess it’s working. He even crawled under his table…but wasn’t really sure how to get back out.

 

 

 

Iris Tillery Sitman

May 03, 1927 – August 19, 2019

A resident of Baton Rouge, LA, passed away on Monday, August 19, 2019 at The Pearl at Jamestown in Baton Rouge, LA. She was born May 3,1927 in Greensburg, LA and was 92 years of age. She was life long member of First Baptist Church of Greensburg and retired Vice President at the Bank of Greensburg. She is survived by daughter, Diane G. Sitman; 2 nephews, Dickie Sitman and Mac Addison; 1 niece, Kay S. Morgan. Preceded in death by her brother, Joe Tillery; parents, Flavis and Celia Tillery; 1 nephew, Randy Sitman. The Fall Food Roundup for the LA Baptist Children’s Home is only four weeks away.  Be sure to get your items to the church for the September 16th pickup.  Some of the items they need are:

I’m looking forward to peeking in bags today at church to see what you have brought for Operation Christmas Child.  David and I are always excited to prepare shoeboxes so children will receive some small gifts and an opportunity for them to “meet” Jesus.

David Joel Carruth

A resident of Kentwood, LA, David was peacefully welcomed into heaven on August 13, 2019 after a brief illness following heart surgery. Born March 29, 1964 in Kentwood to his loving parents Ransom David Carruth and Yvonne Bryant Carruth. David was a boilermaker by trade but had been unable to work for many years. David is survived by his sisters Mary Jo Ricks of McComb, MS and Kathy Wales (Chris) of Kentwood, LA, 5 nieces and nephews Rob Ricks, Rondi Ricks, Kirk Wales, Kristen Eichholz and Korey Wales. He also had 11 great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his companion and caregiver of many years Rachel Marvin. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Barbara Carruth, and an infant brother.

A memorial service will be held at Pine Ridge United Methodist Church, Kentwood, LA on August 24, 2019 from 9:00 till the service at 11:00 A.M. officiated by Bro. Michael Townsend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pine Ridge United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund in memory of David.

Operation Christmas Child “shoeboxes” will be delivered to more than 100 countries this year.  In the next four years, they will be delivered to 1,000 Pacific islands.  They were delivered to 107 unreached people groups in 46 countries in 2018.  More than 86,000 shoeboxes were received to places where churches are starting for the first time.  Shoebox gifts open doors to communities without a church.  Shoeboxes give children the opportunity to learn about Jesus.

Caleb Estay, son of Landon and Alisha, had surgery about 5 P.M. yesterday to put a new shunt in the place of the one removed in the previous surgery.  All went well.  Caleb should be able to go home later today.  Pray for him as he heals from surgery and prepares to begin school.

 

 

 

Melinda Russell, a friend and former missionary in Romania, will be have surgery to remove a tumor from her lung.  She now lives in China where her husband is a teacher.  Most of her family lives in Texas.  Having surgery in a foreign country where there is a language difference complicates things for the patient, family, and for the medical staff.  Please pray for Melinda and everyone else involved.

A friend from Amite found the new plastic OCC shoeboxes for sale in Walmart in Amite.  That means they are probably available in many locations.  This saves the cost of paying for postage and for having to buy the boxes in quantity.  I ordered cardboard boxes last week!

David Ray Hilbun, Jr.

March 12, 1972 – August 12, 2019

A resident of Kentwood, LA was peacefully welcomed into the arms of Jesus on August 12, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born March 12, 1976 in McComb, MS to his loving parents, David Ray, Sr. and Judy Newsom Hilbun. David was a boilermaker by trade and took pride in his work. He would often talk for hours about a job he was on. Moving up in his career, he always looked out for the guys that worked under him and looked at them as an equal. Often he would say, “I was in their shoes at one time.” He never hesitated to get right along side them to lend a hand when needed. On his time off, David enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and especially the light of his life, his precious granddaughter, Saylor Grace. David enjoyed spending time on the river, whether it was running a trout line or just wetting a hook. He loved the peacefulness of the river, always looking for the “Big Catch”. When David wasn’t on a river bank somewhere, you could find him outside cleaning up his Harley Davidson to take a ride for the day. He loved the open air and the freedom of the open road while riding his beloved Harley Davidson motorcycle. David is survived by his wife of 23 years, Brandi McDaniel Hilbun; 3 daughters and a son-in-law, Kelsey Hilbun, Shelby H. Oliver and husband, Bruce, and Harley Hilbun; a granddaughter, Saylor Grace Oliver; father, David Ray Hilbun, Sr.; sister, Misty Hilbun; 2 aunts, Barbara Ann Hilbun Graham and Dorothy Newsom Morris; fathers-in-law and mothers-in-law, Richard and Karen McDaniel and Jimmy and Julie Holton; 3 sisters-in-law and 2 brothers-in-law; and numerous cousins and friends that loved him dearly. He was welcomed into his heavenly home by his mother, Judy Ann Newsom Hilbun; sister, Tanya Denise Hilbun; paternal grandparents, Dave Odie and Maxine Lea Hilbun; maternal grandparents, Willie, Sr. and Helen Brumfield Newsom. Pallbearers will be Brad Yarborough, Skipper Venable, Kirk Keller, Barry Wall, Jerry Newsom, Jr. and Josh Newsom. Honorary pallbearers will be Ruben Prejean, Keith Keller, Kenny Ray Graham, Victor Joe Morris, Roy Blades, and Claude Forrest. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7. Florene Cureton Pate

December 11, 1928 – August 11, 2019

A resident of Fluker, LA, passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2019 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born December 11, 1928 in Brownsfield, TX and was 90 years of age. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister. She was a member of Walter T. Ott #217 Order of  Eastern Star and retired from the Louisiana State Tourism Center in Kentwood. Florene was a member of Tangipahoa Baptist Church where she was voted Mother of the Year. She is survived by  husband of 74 years, Robert Pate, Sr.; 4 children, Robbie Lynn Pate, Deborah Pate Ragan (Devon), Lisa Pate Ginn (Grant) and Robert Pate, Jr.; 7 grandchildren, Robert Bridges, Stephanie Novak (Tony), Heather Monoc (Marco), Jessica Westmoreland Stogner (Edward), Kristen Bonds (fiancé, Josh Barnhill), Brandon Kuyrkendall (Zandrea) and Curtis Ginn; 9 great- grandchildren, Madison Bridges, Hadley Doin, Loic Doin, Silas Novak, Arden Novak, Berend Kuyrkendall, Emma Monoc, Leona Kuyrkendall and Eleonor Rose Stogner; twin sister, Lorene Windham. I saw Mr. Robert Pate a week ago today as I was buying gas for David’s trip to Baton Rouge a week ago today.   We had a sweet visit. He asked us to pray for his wife.  Now, we need to pray for Mr. Robert and other family members.

Yesterday seemed to be a big day for staff recognition in one form or another.

  • The staff of FBC, K shared their thoughts on their time spent at FBC.
  • Bro. Danny Smith and family will be leaving SCBC to retire after serving there 28 years,
  • Bro. Bob Simpson and “Miss” Mary were honored for serving at Arcola for 40 years!

 

 

 

Caleb Estay had surgery to removed a nonfunctional shunt at Texas Children’s Hospital yesterday afternoon.  All seems to have gone well.  He will be watched and a decision will be made concerning putting in a new shunt.  He is from a large family.  His Kentwood family includes grandparents Mike and Catherine Estay and great grandparents Rufus and Margie Williams.  Keep Caleb and his family in your prayers today.

 

 

 

Our neighbor, Adrian Phillips, passed away yesterday afternoon due to a heart attack.  Please be in prayer for his many family members as they make funeral arrangements and plans for a future without Adrian.  He will be missed by many friends.

Another update on Kristi Alford:
Kristi Alford having her last treatment today . Please pray the side affects aren’t so awful . She had a rough time last night . But I am so thankful she was able to do her last treatment for this week today . Now she will have a 21 day rest period . Lord I ask u to infuse her with supernatural strength. Let this 21 day rest renew her strength like that of a eagle . Soaring to heights in her health that she could never imagine happening . U Lord can hold back the bad effects of these treatments. While healing her body completely. Using the hard thing to bring out the very best thing in her life . A Healed Well Body . What a great testimony this will be and has been . We Praise & Thank U Jesus . Psalm 103 1 Bless the Lord oh my soul & all that is within me bless his holy name 2: Bless the Lord oh my soul & forget not his benefits 3:Who forgives all of our iniquities. Another update on Bryan Tate:

The travelers made it home. Not in time to Meet the Jackets though. They wanted to be back In support of Brody who’s a senior this year. A pharmacy mix up and Lake Charles traffic delayed them.

But Bryan got a good report. Total remission! He will still have to complete the 16 months of maintenance. Best News is he won’t have to travel to Houston for one day each month during the three months he’s home. He has been put back under Dr Saux’s care for the monthly infusions and can take them in Covington! Every 4th month he will be in Houston for a month to do the immune therapy.

Thank you for the prayers that have been sent in his name . Asking for Continued prayers as he continues on this journey. He will always be connected to MDA for follow ups. Just so fortunate to have received the best care from the doctors, nurses, staff and our special “angel” there.

God is faithful to his promises.

“I am asking for prayer tonight for Kristi Alford . She’s at MDA taking harsh treatment for ovarian cancer . She has been cancer free for 2-3 yrs & it’s back again . Tonight is a bad night for her . Today was her 3rd treatment many more to come . She has to stay well enough to continue taking the Chemo . At this point the cancer is in-operable . The Drs hope is the tumor will shrink enough they can go in remove it . But tonight she’s desperate for all the prayers she can get . We as Christians know when we seek after the Lord he hears & he will answer . Pray for Jeremy her husband Eli her baby boy who is 10 & Logan & Noah Bales our two grandchildren & Sue Schexnayder her Mother who is with Kristi .. Logan called her Mother earlier Kristi was to weak to talk to her . Plz pray for Kristi Alford tonight she’s needs our prayers.”

 

 

 

Dollie Frazier needs prayers for her eyes.

“I am at the Eye Doctor again. I came this morning and Dr. Rhodes checked my eyes out again. My right eye is swollen a little. My left eye has been giving lots of problems. It looks like a gray film over it and felt like something is in it. Dr Rhodes said it appears the retina in my left eye is torn. Therefore I am seeing another Eye Specialist here in Hammond this evening to have a second opinion. He is the specialist who does surgery on torn retina of eye.
Prayers please…I have seen the other Specialist this evening to find out I have had a stroke in my left eye. I will put drops in eye. Have blood test done tomorrow. Trying to make appointment for a Neurologist whereas I have had a stroke in the left eye. Earliest appointment is Sept. 19, 2019 in Baton Rouge.

Tessie Jane Strickland

August 6, 1954 – July 25, 2019

Tessie Jane Brabham Strickland was born on August 6, 1954 in Marrero,
Louisiana. Being born on her daddy’s birthday, she was his birthday present.
Tessie was a quiet child that always managed to win the hearts of those around
her.

She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church for most of her life. In fact,
she met the love of her life while attending a Sunday School party. She and
Tommy were married for almost 48 years. They raised their four sons in the New
Zion community of the sixth ward of St. Helena Parish. They have 11
grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Tessie loved to travel with her family, especially to the town of Silverton.
One of her favorite things to do was riding trails through the mountains.
She and Tommy were always the life of the party when they stepped on the
dance floor. They won several contests, including a grand prize for a dance off.
Tessie attended college at Southeastern Louisiana University and
graduated with a Bachelor of Arts at Baptist Christian College in Shreveport,
Louisiana (while raising her four sons).

or a total of 27 years Tessie demonstrated her love for teaching and made
a positive impact in lives of students at ASC, Mt. Hermon, Kentwood Elementary,
and Spring Creek Elementary.

As an active member of the St. Helena Sixth Ward fire department, Tessie
served as both the secretary of the board and a firefighter.

Her patriotism was evident since Tessie always flew an American flag in
their yard, often over a flower bed of red, white, and blue flowers.
By just looking at her beautiful yard, everyone knew that Tessie had
inherited her mother’s green thumb. As a life-time member of the Kentwood
Garden Club Tessie served as an officer many times. She proudly won Yard of the
Month and Yard of the Year several times.

Tessie is survived by husband, Tommy Strickland; sons, Joseph Strickland,
wife Paula; Timothy Strickland, wife Becky; Charlie Strickland, wife Jessica;
Trenton Strickland; brother, Jessie Reed; sisters, Ruth Blackmon, Theresa
Blackmon, and Thelma Schenk.

She went to her heavenly home to join her mother, Carmelita Barrios
Brabham; her father, Thomas Joseph Brabham; her brothers, Edgar Joseph Reed
and Timothy Brabham; and her brothers-in-law, Hugh Wayne Blackmon, Bobby
Strickland, Eddie Earl Strickland.

To know Tessie was to love her, and no amount of time would have ever
been enough to have had her with us. But we praise God for her life and her love
and we wait for the day when we will see her again. In the sweet bye and bye. . .
our spirits will sorrow no more.

Visitation will be Saturday evening at New Zion Baptist Church.  The funeral will be Sunday afternoon at 2 P.M.
