Martha P. Drago

I started my radiation treatments today at MBP in Baton Rouge. I will have to drive to Baton Rouge everyday for 6 weeks. Since the cancer was on the left side, receiving radiation on that side can affect your heart. My radiation oncologist wanted me to use a new technique that is only available at theBaton Rouge MBP. It’s almost like being on an episode of Star Trek the way it is a set up, but without going into all the detail, it calls for me to hold my breath while receiving the radiation. This moves my heart out of the way and in return no radiation to the heart! Not looking forward to the drive everyday but what is six weeks in the scheme of things! I would much rather have a healthy heart! There is a light at the end of the tunnel and with each day it shines brighter! I am so grateful for all of your prayers and support. I would not have gotten this far in the journey without God, family and friends! Please continue to pray for successful radiation with little or no side affects and safe travels to and from Baton Rouge each day! Macy is doing well, please continue to pray for her as well!

Do you remember the “kind gentleman” who had a recent procedure?

Please continue praying for him and his family.

Mrs. Doris Young

VBS at FBC, Kentwood – Day 4 and going strong.  If your children/grandchildren have not been attending, it is not too late for them to get in two great days of VBS.

I love to teach children about missions.  My own missionaries will be returning “home” next month.  Pray for them as they sort through things and pack for the return trip. I thank God for this year, the first, the grandchildren had in American schools.  Thank God for the new friendships that have been made, the new missionaries that have been trained, and the friendships overseas that will continue to thrive.  Pray for their ministry to be fruitful.

You have lots of opportunities to serve God today.   One opportunity is to freeze food to be given to some local families.  It comes in so handy so them can have some home-cooked meals when that is no longer able to happen in their home.

  • Freeze about 2 cups of food in a quart-size bag.
  • Label and date the bag.
  •  Freeze it.
  • Sunday, bring the bags of food to my classroom before Sunday School.
  • The food will be delivered to some very appreciative people Sunday afternoon.

“That I may open my mouth boldly

that in it I may speak boldly,

~Ephesians 6:19b-20, NKJV~

(This is my prayer for each and every  teacher at any VBS in any church this summer.)

Mike Miller

Yesterday, Beverly Rohbacker asked for prayer for her cousin, Mike Miller.  She quickly told me he is NOT the Mike Miller from Kentwood.  This Mike had polio as a child.  I asked was he from Roseland.  Yes, he is the one many of us knew many years ago.  He is now 59 and in ICU at Brookhaven.  Please pray for Mike and his family.

Jadon’s Journey

We have been spending alot of time in waiting rooms. Dentist said no cavities for Jacob and Jadon. Orthotic specialist said we will order new braces for Jadon at the end of July. ENT said Jacob has to have his tubes removed next Tuesday and neurologist said that Jadon is doing fantastic. After Tuesday we should be done for a while!!

Kathy Smith

I don’t know all the details, but Bro. Danny Smith’s wife has had surgery followed by additional problems.  Please pray for Kathy and her family.  Bro. Danny is so faithful to visit Kentwood people who are hospitalized.  We certainly need to add them to our prayer list.

Eleanor Morris

Eleanor Morris went to her doctor yesterday.  She had some chest pains and was rushed to OLOL and admitted.  The doctor DOES NOT think she had a heart problem, but she was admitted for tests to learn more.  She should be released today unless results from tests show a need for a longer stay.  As you pray for her, pray for her family.  Eleanor is usually the caregiver for them.

Operation Christmas Child – I trust you are collecting for October, 2015 packing.

Julia was born in Ukraine into a family full of poverty, pain and addiction. When she was 8-years-old, Julia’s father took all of their possessions and left her and her mother. One day, her mother was invited to church by a friend and gave her life to the Lord. Soon after, Julia’s church received brightly colored shoeboxes. Julia not only got a gift that day, but finally something to call her own. In her box she found candy, jewelry and other girl items. Julia said the shoebox gift gave her hope of a safe place. Eventually, Julia started working with the group who delivered the shoebox gifts and began reaching out to other children who grew up like she did. Julia’s own shoebox gave her more than material items; it gave her hope and reminded her that the Lord would keep her safe.

Mr. James Frazier was in attendance in church both Sunday morning and Sunday evening.  When a person who attends church as regularly as he does misses for five weeks due to a health issue, they feel so blessed to be back in God’s house.  Thank you for praying for him.

I’ve been faithful to keep up with some of my “blessings” daily this year.  Yesterday, among other blessings of the day, I was blessed to see pictures of graduates being recognized in several area churches and baptisms in several area churches.  The blessings in the lives of others blessed me as I thought of the opportunities open to those who have completed school and the greater opportunities open to those who have accepted Christ as their personal Savior.

Women’s Ministry – Opportunities for the Week

  • Operation Christmas Child – purchase some items for the “shoeboxes” we will be sending to children around the world in October.  The greatest value of the boxes is not the various items that go into the box, but the opportunities the children will have to learn about Jesus.   Make some purchases this week.  It doesn’t involve large amounts of money, just large amounts of love and and a desire to share Jesus with others.  Don’t miss this opportunity to help!
  • Annie Armstrong Offering for North American Missions – It’s never too late to give to missions!  Never forget that people in our own country, and Canada, need to make that great decision for themselves.  That’s what this offering funds.

  • Tuesday – Learn about nursing homes, home health, hospice, physical therapy, etc. at New Zion Baptist Church as Toni Holland Fitzgerald shares with us.  She has had so many experiences in working in these areas that she has a wealth of knowledge to share.  If you are interested, she will be sharing at 10:30 in the fellowship hall.  You do not have to be a member at NZBC to attend.
  • ThursdayThird Thursday at the Cabin – David and I invite you to come to our cabin to enjoy sweet Christian fellowship, a bountiful, delicious meal, and a time of music topped off with a devotional and prayer.  We begin at 6:30.  Please ask me if you need directions.

Devotional, Scripture, and a Song

  • “A Survivor’s Thoughts” http://odb.org/
  • “I have great sorrow and continual grief in my heart.                                                                  For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren.”                                                                                                                                                ~Romans 9:2-3~
  • Hymns to sing today:

Read the Bible in a Year –  Jeremiah 37-41

What does this day hold for us?  We do not know all that will happen today, but we know who will be with us each step of the way.  If you don’t, please find someone who can guide you in making the most important decision of your life.  If you need help, I can give you some suggestions about a person to contact.

Saturday

                        LORD, you establish peace for us;

all that we have accomplished you have done for us.

My aunt’s husband in Texas, John Orr, got a good report on the mass in his bladder.  He will not need any additional treatment to follow up on the surgery that has already been done.

Joe Easley of the New Zion community is having kidney problems.  Please pray for this man and his family.  The last few years have been very difficult for them.

Doug Toney (Written by his wife, Sandy)

FRIDAY May 8, 2015

Doug is still not very alert. Vitals are fairly stable with an occasional episode of high Blood pressure or high heart rate. They did an ultrasound of abdomen and found his gall bladder inflamed with sludge. Waiting to talk to the surgeon. Also, a wound care nurse will come today to check his incision. Brooklyn and I will go check out two long term acute care centers tomorrow. Please continue to pray for his healing. Also, please pray for our friends- Jeanne Terrell and Paul Hancock who are struggling with major health issues, too.

Thanks for praying for my unspoken request yesterday.  Surgery went well.  The man should be able to come home today.

Women’s Ministry

  • Report on yesterday’s Bible study:
    •  We had a good study of the “Woman at the Well”, a great salad/dessert lunch, and wonderful fellowship.
    • Six ladies joined us for the first time.
    • Next week: “Lot’s Wife” (See me Sunday if you need a study guide for next week.)
      • Genesis 18:16 – 19:29
      • Luke 17:28-33
  • Operation Christmas Child
    • A few ladies have been working on tote bags for each box we plan to pack in October.  They have about 200 made so far.  I appreciate their diligence.
    • If you have not picked up a “paper bag” from the table across from the kitch in the fellowship hall, please select one and purchase the items listed on it.  We are making good progress.  Sunday, I looked at the items purchased so far.  I’m so thankful to those of you who have put your hearts, efforts, and money into this project that will take the love of Jesus to little children around the world.
  • Planning meeting for the next Ladies’ Night
    • Plan to join us on the 17th to make our plans for the June meeting.
    • We will meet in my Sunday School classroom at 3 P.M.
  • Frozen Food for families
    • Put about 2 cups of food, mainly main dishes and vegetables, in quart-size freezer bags during the month and freeze until our collection day.
    • Bring to my Sunday School classroom before Sunday School on June 7th.
    • Food will be delivered to families that day.
  • Hope Center
    • If you would like to get plugged into working for a day or for the same day each week, please let me know.  I can get you scheduled.
    • Hope Center continues to operate the thrift store and provide food to families who qualify on three Friday morning each month.  Isn’t it a blessing we are providing for so many families it takes three different weeks to get the food distributed?
    • Thanks to the churches of our association and their members, as well as others, who are supporting Hope Center in various ways.
