The Operation Christmas Child “shoeboxes” takes gifts and the message of Jesus’ love to children around the world.  I’m so thankful we are able to participate in this ministry of Samaritan’s Purse, which is a part of Franklin Graham’s ministry.  Remember that each shoebox impacts an average of seven people.  We need to do our part to reach the children for the Lord.

 

 

 

The Lottie Moon Easter Offering for North America continues.  Thank-you to those who have contributed to the need to reach out to the lost in Canada and the United States.

David‘s blood level continues to run low, but about the same.  The doctors are beginning to think this is the “new normal” for him.  Yesterday, he was given an option regarding receiving a unit of blood.  David chose not to get it yesterday, but to wait until he feels the need more.  He can get his blood any day this week, so we don’t have to wait until next Monday.  Thank you for your continued prayers.

November 07, 1947 – April 21, 2019

A resident of Amite passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2019 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born November 7, 1947 in Denham Springs and was 71 years of age. She was a member of St. Helena Catholic Church in Amite. Operation Christmas Child at FBC, Kentwood

  • Last year, we received parade throws like beads and small stuffed animals.   If you have some that you have no plans for, please leave them at the church office or in the classroom next to the choir.  We will find them very useful when packing OCC “shoeboxes” later this year.  Thank-you so much!
  • The large basket on the organ has some plastic “eggs” already.  If you have some you don’t need to keep, please share them.  They will be use for OCC in several different ways.

 

 

 

Children in Action meets at FBC, Kentwood meets at 6 P.M. on Wednesday nights.  They have been studying missions in Chile and praying for missionary needs.

Youth on Mission meets at FBC, Kentwood meets at  5 P.M. on Sunday nights.  This group recently complete a nice project for the senior adult ladies at church.

Now that Easter egg hunts are over for this year, I will ask that if you are discarding plastic Easter eggs that you please leave them at FBC, Kentwood so we can use them in several different ways for Operation Christmas Child.

 

 

 

There is a tote on the organ at church with some ideas of items to purchase for Operation Christmas Child.  Look through the tote and get some ideas.  Then, happy shopping.  Please leave your donations at the church office or in the classroom next to the choir room.  May I suggest you make a decision to spend a certain amount each week (or month).  Then shop frequently!  If you cannot shop frequently, I suggest donating to OCC by putting your donation in an envelope marked OCC or to hand your donation to me when you see me.  I love to shop of OCC.  Packing day will be here before you know it!

 

 

 

There are many ways to share the message of salvation.  Today, let’s pray for ministers who do that from a pulpit, in hospitals, and other places every week.  Pray for Sunday School teachers and mission leaders who teach regularly the same message.  Also, pray for missionaries and their families who live the same lifestyle, but who do it on mission fields around the world.  Pray regularly for those who share the Good News.  May it become who you are and what you do.

Sandra Spears Forbes, a resident of  Denham Springs , LA, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at The Crossing at Clarity Hospice in Baton Rouge, LA. This is the day we honor the death of Jesus on the cross because He gave His life for us.   It truly is a Good Friday.  I’m thankful I know the “end of the story” and the purpose of the resurrection.

Eggs are a sign of new life.  Easter eggs represent the new life we have through Jesus.  As your children tire of the plastic eggs this week, if you do not plan to keep them, please bring them to Kentwood First Baptist Church.  We would like to give the plastic eggs new life as an item for Operation Christmas Child “shoeboxes“.  I will have a large basket at church for the eggs or you can leave them in the church office during the week or in the classroom next to the choir room on a Sunday.  Thanks for helping us.

Sunday, you will have the opportunity to attend sunrise services at Inspiration Park or some of the local churches.  I have fond memories of previous sunrise services.  I trust you do too.  Make a new memory this week.

SBDR shines ‘ray of hope’ after southern storms

ALTO, Texas (BP) — Southern Baptist Disaster Relief units have deployed across the South following a weekend of storms that caused at least eight deaths, injured dozens more and left damage from Texas to Georgia.In east Texas, DR units from both Texas Baptist Men and the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention deployed after an EF-2 and an EF-3 tornado touched down. At least four people in Texas died, according to media reports, including two children who were killed when a pine tree fell on the car carrying them near Pollok, Texas.

“When things seem really bad, we’re able to come in and just introduce that ray of hope for them to take the next steps,” Texas Baptist Men spokesman Rand Jenkins told NBC’s Dallas affiliate.

Texas Baptist Men, a ministry of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, deployed DR teams to the hart-hit towns of Franklin and Alto, Texas, April 14, according to a BGCT news release. Their ministry has included feeding units, chainsaw crews, shower and laundry units, temporary roof installation, assessment and chaplaincy.

SBTC volunteers were headed toward Franklin with a quick-response mobile kitchen within two hours of an April 13 tornado, the North American Mission Board told Baptist Press. Self-contained like a food truck, the quick-response mobile kitchen is designed to serve a few hundred simple meals quickly before a larger feeding operation can be established. The unit also focuses on evangelism, the SBTC said.

A second SBTC DR team dispatched to Alto and focused on feeding and recovery.

“Lots of [church] members have gone out with chainsaws helping to clear the trees and the debris,” said Gary Pridemore, pastor of First Baptist Church in Alto, where the SBTC team has established a base of operations. Locals and outside volunteers “have been working like beavers getting all the trees cut up and roads cleared.”

In Mississippi — where at least one person died according to media reports — six local chainsaw teams deployed along with three teams focused on chaplaincy and assessment, NAMB said.

In Alabama, a DR team did chainsaw work in the city of Troy while another team did chainsaw and roof tarping work in Etowah County, Alabama Baptist DR director Mark Wakefield said.

At least one county worker died near Birmingham, Ala., when a vehicle struck him as he attempted to clear fallen trees from a roadway, according to media reports.

In Louisiana — where at least two deaths were reported — a DR team from Blanchard performed tree removal and roof repair work, according to Louisiana’s Baptist Message newsjournal. The team also distributed Bibles and water.

At one point on April 14, nearly 90,000 people across the South were without power because of the storms, the Associated Press reported.

Pridemore, of Alto, Texas, requested prayer for the safety of DR workers, the recovery of injured people and the spread of the Gospel.

“Pray that [DR work] will open doors to the ministry of the churches,” Pridemore said.

Brett Frazier will have one of the two tests done this morning.  The other one cannot be done.  Pray this test is the one that will lead the cardiologist in making good decisions about Brett’s care.  Pray for Brett as he enters a new week of treatment.  Pray for Susan and other family members.

May 07, 1934 – April 13, 2019Edwina Vining Ballard, a resident of Chesbrough passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at St. Helena Parish Nursing Home in Greensburg. She was born May 7, 1934 in Amite and was 84 years of age. She was a member of the 1952 Amite High School Basketball State Champions. She served as Justice of the Peace for 34 years in Ward 4 of Tangipahoa Parish, was a notary for over 50 years, and was a member of First Baptist Church in Amite. She is survived by her son, Brett Ballard and wife, Angela “Boo Boo” Travis Ballard; 2 grandchildren, Shelbi Lyn Ballard and Braydon Lane Ballard; 2 sisters, Gloria Hood and Virgie Morgan and husband, James; brother, David Vining and wife, Carleen. Young Jules Tanksley had a good day yesterday.  Thanks to Children’s Hospital in NO for taking good care of many children from our area.  Hopefully, Jules’ parents will be bringing her home soon.

 

 

 

Mr. Frank Erwin may be able to leave North Oaks and return home later today.  His condition is treatable with medication.

 

 

 

James M.  Burch

1931-2019

James M. Burch (Major, Retired, USAF) was born on July 26, 1931, in Liverpool, LA, and passed away Monday, March 11, 2019, at the age of 87. Having grown up on a farm in rural Greensburg, LA, he learned the value of hard work. He was a graduate of Louisiana State University and proudly served our country for more than twenty years in the United States Air Force. He had assignments at Goose Bay Air Base in Newfoundland, Canada, the Republic of China (Taiwan), and Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, TX, and flew missions in Vietnam during the war. Following his military duty, he began his second career as a federal civil servant working in the United States Department of Labor for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. His final days were spent surrounded by family during a short stay at the Northeast Louisiana Veterans Home. He was a long-time member of Oakcrest Baptist Church and resident of Baton Rouge but most recently lived in Monroe, LA with Jerre, his wife of 51 years. He is also survived by four loving children, Chip Birch (Lisa), Sheree Burch Phifer (Glenn), Mary Burch Mangham (Doug), and Shawna Burch Johnson (Alan). He also leaves behind eight grandchildren, Trey Birch (Meghan), Travis Phifer (Taylor), Victoria Phifer, Regan Mangham, Emery Johnson, Major Mangham, Reid Johnson, Daniel Birch; and two great-grandchildren, James Birch and Cindy Birch. He is also survived by five sisters, Barbara McDaniel, Jane Duncan, Grace Helen Williams, Cheryl Scott and Beverly Easley. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Sarah Birch; parents, Clifton and Rena Burch; sister, Carolyn Easley; and brothers, Jack Burch Sr., Donald Ray Burch and Percy Dean Burch. A memorial service will be held at New Zion Baptist Church in Kentwood, LA, at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 6, 2019. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the .
