David Ray Hilbun, Jr.

March 12, 1972 – August 12, 2019

A resident of Kentwood, LA was peacefully welcomed into the arms of Jesus on August 12, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born March 12, 1976 in McComb, MS to his loving parents, David Ray, Sr. and Judy Newsom Hilbun. David was a boilermaker by trade and took pride in his work. He would often talk for hours about a job he was on. Moving up in his career, he always looked out for the guys that worked under him and looked at them as an equal. Often he would say, “I was in their shoes at one time.” He never hesitated to get right along side them to lend a hand when needed. On his time off, David enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and especially the light of his life, his precious granddaughter, Saylor Grace. David enjoyed spending time on the river, whether it was running a trout line or just wetting a hook. He loved the peacefulness of the river, always looking for the “Big Catch”. When David wasn’t on a river bank somewhere, you could find him outside cleaning up his Harley Davidson to take a ride for the day. He loved the open air and the freedom of the open road while riding his beloved Harley Davidson motorcycle. David is survived by his wife of 23 years, Brandi McDaniel Hilbun; 3 daughters and a son-in-law, Kelsey Hilbun, Shelby H. Oliver and husband, Bruce, and Harley Hilbun; a granddaughter, Saylor Grace Oliver; father, David Ray Hilbun, Sr.; sister, Misty Hilbun; 2 aunts, Barbara Ann Hilbun Graham and Dorothy Newsom Morris; fathers-in-law and mothers-in-law, Richard and Karen McDaniel and Jimmy and Julie Holton; 3 sisters-in-law and 2 brothers-in-law; and numerous cousins and friends that loved him dearly. He was welcomed into his heavenly home by his mother, Judy Ann Newsom Hilbun; sister, Tanya Denise Hilbun; paternal grandparents, Dave Odie and Maxine Lea Hilbun; maternal grandparents, Willie, Sr. and Helen Brumfield Newsom. Pallbearers will be Brad Yarborough, Skipper Venable, Kirk Keller, Barry Wall, Jerry Newsom, Jr. and Josh Newsom. Honorary pallbearers will be Ruben Prejean, Keith Keller, Kenny Ray Graham, Victor Joe Morris, Roy Blades, and Claude Forrest. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7. The family would like to express their thanks for all the phone calls, visits, texts, and food throughout this time. June 22, 1943 – August 11, 2019

Adrian Lovett Phillips

Adrian Lovett Phillips, Sr., 76 of Pine Ridge passed away, Sunday, August 11, 2019 at St. Helena Parish Hospital in Greensburg.

He was born June 22, 1943 in Pine Ridge.  He was the son of Clyde Lea Phillips and Sudie Rimes Phillips.

Mr. Phillips was a longtime member of Pine Ridge Methodist Church.  He was a retired Boilermaker with Local 582 in Baton Rouge. He was an excellent mechanic and welder. His favorite pastime was fishing, especially with his grandchildren and he also loved hunting.  Mr. Phillips proudly served in the Merchant Marines.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Cheryl Lynn Phillips; one grandson, Rodney Strickland and a brother, Clyde “Dutch” Phillips.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Lauree Phillips of Pine Ridge; two sons and daughters-in-law, Adrian “Phil” Phillips, Jr. and Shona and Ivy “Shorty” Williams and Annette of Pine Ridge; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mona “Dee Dee” Tantillo and Jory of Albany, LA and Verda Strickland and Ronnie of Kentwood; one brother and his wife, Dennis and Cindy Phillips of Pumpkin Center, LA; four sisters and their husbands, Kathy and Bruce Harrell and Ginger and Tommy Travis of Kentwood, Marsha and Rick Vogler of Pensacola and Janet and Jimmy Myer of Hammond; his former wife and mother of their children, Joan Martin of Albany, LA seven grandsons, Tyler Travis, Hunter Phillips, Jerod Phillips, Jake Phillips, Colton Strickland, Sawyer Tantillo and Austin Williams; three granddaughters, Kristan Travis, Jordyn Tantillo and Delaney Phillips; thirteen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.

Visitation is Tuesday at Pine Ridge Methodist Church, 3893 LA-440, Kentwood, LA 70444 from 5PM until 9PM and Wednesday, August 14, 2019 from 8AM until services at 10AM with Michael Townsend officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery under the direction of Sharkey Funeral Home in Summit.

Pallbearers will be Tyler Travis, Hunter Phillips, Jerod Phillips, Jake Phillips, Colton Strickland, and Sawyer Tantillo.

Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Allen, W. D. Newcomb, Kenny Bush, Sonny Travis, and Ronnie Hammons.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to Pine Ridge Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 3893 LA-440, Kentwood, LA 70444.

Lisa Carrier, who lives in Amite, is in Houston for appointment at M.D. Anderson concerning a mass found in her ovary. She would be appreciative of prayers on her behalf and all concerned. Lisa works at North Oaks in the lab. She has been a friend of my family for many years. Please add her to the prayer list. Thank you

Lisa is one of my former students.  I have enjoyed seeing her and her siblings several times in recent years.  Let’s keep Lisa in our prayers.

 

 

 

Morria Reynolds, father of Deanna Reynolds, will have a leg amputated on 9/4/19.  Your prayers for him and his family will be greatly appreciated.

 

 

 

Caleb Estay is still waiting for a decision about the next medical step.  Pray for him and his family as well as the medical staff of Children’s Hospital.

December 11, 1928 – August 11, 2019

A resident of Fluker, LA, passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2019 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born December 11, 1928 in Brownsfield, TX and was 90 years of age. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister. She was a member of Walter T. Ott #217 Order of  Eastern Star and retired from the Louisiana State Tourism Center in Kentwood. Florene was a member of Tangipahoa Baptist Church where she was voted Mother of the Year. She is survived by  husband of 74 years, Robert Pate, Sr.; 4 children, Robbie Lynn Pate, Deborah Pate Ragan (Devon), Lisa Pate Ginn (Grant) and Robert Pate, Jr.; 7 grandchildren, Robert Bridges, Stephanie Novak (Tony), Heather Monoc (Marco), Jessica Westmoreland Stogner (Edward), Kristen Bonds (fiancé, Josh Barnhill), Brandon Kuyrkendall (Zandrea) and Curtis Ginn; 9 great- grandchildren, Madison Bridges, Hadley Doin, Loic Doin, Silas Novak, Arden Novak, Berend Kuyrkendall, Emma Monoc, Leona Kuyrkendall and Eleonor Rose Stogner; twin sister, Lorene Windham. Preceded in death by her 2 daughters, Sarita Pate and Rebecca Pate Bonds; parents, Robert and Rosa Cureton; 2 brothers, Robert and Gene; 3 sisters, Hazel, Doris and Joyce. I saw Mr. Robert Pate a week ago today as I was buying gas for David’s trip to Baton Rouge a week ago today.   We had a sweet visit. He asked us to pray for his wife.  Now, we need to pray for Mr. Robert and other family members.

Yesterday seemed to be a big day for staff recognition in one form or another.

  • The staff of FBC, K shared their thoughts on their time spent at FBC.
  • Bro. Danny Smith and family will be leaving SCBC to retire after serving there 28 years,
  • Bro. Bob Simpson and “Miss” Mary were honored for serving at Arcola for 40 years!

 

 

 

Caleb Estay had surgery to removed a nonfunctional shunt at Texas Children’s Hospital yesterday afternoon.  All seems to have gone well.  He will be watched and a decision will be made concerning putting in a new shunt.  He is from a large family.  His Kentwood family includes grandparents Mike and Catherine Estay and great grandparents Rufus and Margie Williams.  Keep Caleb and his family in your prayers today.

 

 

 

Our neighbor, Adrian Phillips, passed away yesterday afternoon due to a heart attack.  Please be in prayer for his many family members as they make funeral arrangements and plans for a future without Adrian.  He will be missed by many friends.

Shopping for Operation Christmas Child

This is just one statement that reminds me how important packing “shoeboxes” really is!

 

 

 

Take your shoebox gift to a local drop-off location during National Collection Week.  Nearly 5,000 drop-off locations across the country will collect shoebox giving November 18-25. 2019.  FBC, Kentwood will again serve as a collection site for those of you who wish to bring your boxes to us.  We will be glad to ship them on for you.

 

 

 

Please continue to pray for teachers, students, and staff as schools have recently started or will do so in the near future.  Pray for Christians to “let their light shine” for others to see!

Another update on Kristi Alford:
Kristi Alford having her last treatment today . Please pray the side affects aren’t so awful . She had a rough time last night . But I am so thankful she was able to do her last treatment for this week today . Now she will have a 21 day rest period . Lord I ask u to infuse her with supernatural strength. Let this 21 day rest renew her strength like that of a eagle . Soaring to heights in her health that she could never imagine happening . U Lord can hold back the bad effects of these treatments. While healing her body completely. Using the hard thing to bring out the very best thing in her life . A Healed Well Body . What a great testimony this will be and has been . We Praise & Thank U Jesus . Psalm 103 1 Bless the Lord oh my soul & all that is within me bless his holy name 2: Bless the Lord oh my soul & forget not his benefits 3:Who forgives all of our iniquities. Another update on Bryan Tate:

The travelers made it home. Not in time to Meet the Jackets though. They wanted to be back In support of Brody who’s a senior this year. A pharmacy mix up and Lake Charles traffic delayed them.

But Bryan got a good report. Total remission! He will still have to complete the 16 months of maintenance. Best News is he won’t have to travel to Houston for one day each month during the three months he’s home. He has been put back under Dr Saux’s care for the monthly infusions and can take them in Covington! Every 4th month he will be in Houston for a month to do the immune therapy.

Thank you for the prayers that have been sent in his name . Asking for Continued prayers as he continues on this journey. He will always be connected to MDA for follow ups. Just so fortunate to have received the best care from the doctors, nurses, staff and our special “angel” there.

God is faithful to his promises.

“I am asking for prayer tonight for Kristi Alford . She’s at MDA taking harsh treatment for ovarian cancer . She has been cancer free for 2-3 yrs & it’s back again . Tonight is a bad night for her . Today was her 3rd treatment many more to come . She has to stay well enough to continue taking the Chemo . At this point the cancer is in-operable . The Drs hope is the tumor will shrink enough they can go in remove it . But tonight she’s desperate for all the prayers she can get . We as Christians know when we seek after the Lord he hears & he will answer . Pray for Jeremy her husband Eli her baby boy who is 10 & Logan & Noah Bales our two grandchildren & Sue Schexnayder her Mother who is with Kristi .. Logan called her Mother earlier Kristi was to weak to talk to her . Plz pray for Kristi Alford tonight she’s needs our prayers.”

 

 

 

Dollie Frazier needs prayers for her eyes.

“I am at the Eye Doctor again. I came this morning and Dr. Rhodes checked my eyes out again. My right eye is swollen a little. My left eye has been giving lots of problems. It looks like a gray film over it and felt like something is in it. Dr Rhodes said it appears the retina in my left eye is torn. Therefore I am seeing another Eye Specialist here in Hammond this evening to have a second opinion. He is the specialist who does surgery on torn retina of eye.
Prayers please…I have seen the other Specialist this evening to find out I have had a stroke in my left eye. I will put drops in eye. Have blood test done tomorrow. Trying to make appointment for a Neurologist whereas I have had a stroke in the left eye. Earliest appointment is Sept. 19, 2019 in Baton Rouge.

Tessie Jane Strickland

August 6, 1954 – July 25, 2019

Tessie Jane Brabham Strickland was born on August 6, 1954 in Marrero,
Louisiana. Being born on her daddy’s birthday, she was his birthday present.
Tessie was a quiet child that always managed to win the hearts of those around
her.

She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church for most of her life. In fact,
she met the love of her life while attending a Sunday School party. She and
Tommy were married for almost 48 years. They raised their four sons in the New
Zion community of the sixth ward of St. Helena Parish. They have 11
grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Tessie loved to travel with her family, especially to the town of Silverton.
One of her favorite things to do was riding trails through the mountains.
She and Tommy were always the life of the party when they stepped on the
dance floor. They won several contests, including a grand prize for a dance off.
Tessie attended college at Southeastern Louisiana University and
graduated with a Bachelor of Arts at Baptist Christian College in Shreveport,
Louisiana (while raising her four sons).

or a total of 27 years Tessie demonstrated her love for teaching and made
a positive impact in lives of students at ASC, Mt. Hermon, Kentwood Elementary,
and Spring Creek Elementary.

As an active member of the St. Helena Sixth Ward fire department, Tessie
served as both the secretary of the board and a firefighter.

Her patriotism was evident since Tessie always flew an American flag in
their yard, often over a flower bed of red, white, and blue flowers.
By just looking at her beautiful yard, everyone knew that Tessie had
inherited her mother’s green thumb. As a life-time member of the Kentwood
Garden Club Tessie served as an officer many times. She proudly won Yard of the
Month and Yard of the Year several times.

Tessie is survived by husband, Tommy Strickland; sons, Joseph Strickland,
wife Paula; Timothy Strickland, wife Becky; Charlie Strickland, wife Jessica;
Trenton Strickland; brother, Jessie Reed; sisters, Ruth Blackmon, Theresa
Blackmon, and Thelma Schenk.

She went to her heavenly home to join her mother, Carmelita Barrios
Brabham; her father, Thomas Joseph Brabham; her brothers, Edgar Joseph Reed
and Timothy Brabham; and her brothers-in-law, Hugh Wayne Blackmon, Bobby
Strickland, Eddie Earl Strickland.

To know Tessie was to love her, and no amount of time would have ever
been enough to have had her with us. But we praise God for her life and her love
and we wait for the day when we will see her again. In the sweet bye and bye. . .
our spirits will sorrow no more.

Visitation will be Saturday evening at New Zion Baptist Church.  The funeral will be Sunday afternoon at 2 P.M.

Rufus Willians had eye surgery yesterday.  Thankfully, they are better than the vehicle.

 

 

 

Linda Callihan told us yesterday, that she needs a procedure to remove a place on her back . She will be going to MDAnderson for that to happen Monday.

 

 

 

First Baptist Church, Greensburg is hosting a homecoming Sunday.  You are invited to attend and even join them for lunch.

 

 

 

Gerald and Bea Miller had an accident yesterday.  Thankfully, after being checked out, they learned they were okay and were able to go home.

 

 

 

Kurt Raynard Dillon

Kurt Raynard Dillon

December 09, 1975 – August 06, 2019

Kurt Raynard Dillon, 43, of Summit, MS, passed from this life on Tuesday, August 6, 2019, at 2:00 PM at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, LA, from complications following a motorcycle accident on July 22, 2019.

He was born on December 9, 1975, in McComb, MS, to Keith and Patsy Dillon. Kurt was a Christian and a member of Johnston Chapel United Methodist Church where he attended regularly. He worked for many years as a painter, enjoyed riding his motorcycle, visiting with family and friends, talking with any and every one that would listen, and playing with his dog Sam. He was a loving son, brother, nephew and friend.

Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Ora Dillon, James Dillon, Ellis Pittman, Minnie B. Pittman and one uncle, Roy Dillon.

Survivors are his parents, Keith and Patsy (Pittman) Dillon of Brandon, MS; one brother, Micah (Pam) Dillon of Summit, MS; one nephew, Evan (Rachel) Dillon of Gonzales, LA; one aunt, Jackie (Allen) Jones of Albany, LA; three uncles, James (Martha) Dillon of Summit, MS; David (Joann) Dillon of Jayess, MS; Johnny (Helen) Pittman of Kentwood, LA; and several cousins and other family and friends.

Visitation will be on Friday, August 9, 2019, at Sharkey Funeral Home in Summit, MS, from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM. There will be a graveside service on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at New Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Easleyville, LA at 10:00 AM.  Bro. Matthew Pharis will be officiating the services with Catchings-Sharkey Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Honorary pallbearers are James Lee Berch, David Dillon, Evan Dillon, James Dillon, Micah Dillon, Michael Wayne Ingle, and Johnny Pittman.

Vivian Schmidt Newton

July 15, 1960 – August 05, 2019

A resident of Roseland, LA, passed away on Monday, August 5, 2019 at Hood Memorial Hospital in Amite, LA. She was born July 15, 1960 in Mc Comb, MS and was 59 years of age. She was a long time active member of First Baptist Church of Roseland. She taught math at Oak Forest Academy for 20 years and was a part time postal clerk until her paralysis 16 years ago. She continued to tutor students in her home which she loved dearly. Her faith in God gave her the strength to overcome her obstacles in life and to continue showing the love of God to others. Her grandson, Zander, was her pride and joy. She is survived by her husband, Bert Newton; daughter, Natalie Newton; grandson, Zander Monteleone; mother, Jean Schmidt; 3 sisters, Betty Robinson and husband, Joseph, Gail Hearn and husband, Nelson and Joan Stamps and husband, Tim; numerous nieces and nephews; special friend and caregiver, Melissa Dyson; special friend, Samuel Smith. Preceded in death by her father, Richard E. Schmidt; brother, Eddie Schmidt; sister-in-law, Anne Ellzey and husband, Jerry. Visitation at First Baptist Church of Roseland from 10:00 AM until religious services at 2:00 PM on Friday, August 9, 2019. Services conducted by Rev. Rick Elder and Rev. Vann Windom.
