Thursday Addition

Mr. Burnell went into the hospital yesterday.  My previous post was based on “incorrect” information about him.  He is at North Oaks.

Summer Mixon

Update 6/4
Summer Mixon had the procedure and is doing well. I am here with her and there still no solid answers of what is causing the elevated bilirubin and liver function labs but the results have stablized so prayerfully they will start getting back to normal. All other labs are back to normal. They did put a couple of stents in the bile ducts but do not believe that is what was causing the issue. Thanks to everyone for the prayers, please continue praying for her.

Thursday

He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white.

I will never blot out his name from the book of life,

but will acknowledge his name

before my Father and his angels.

Eleanor Morris

The equipment of Eleanor’s test was not working, so she was released yesterday and will return to her doctor today for the test in the office.  Pray for her as she has tests there.

Martha P. Drago

I started my radiation treatments today at MBP in Baton Rouge. I will have to drive to Baton Rouge everyday for 6 weeks. Since the cancer was on the left side, receiving radiation on that side can affect your heart. My radiation oncologist wanted me to use a new technique that is only available at theBaton Rouge MBP. It’s almost like being on an episode of Star Trek the way it is a set up, but without going into all the detail, it calls for me to hold my breath while receiving the radiation. This moves my heart out of the way and in return no radiation to the heart! Not looking forward to the drive everyday but what is six weeks in the scheme of things! I would much rather have a healthy heart! There is a light at the end of the tunnel and with each day it shines brighter! I am so grateful for all of your prayers and support. I would not have gotten this far in the journey without God, family and friends! Please continue to pray for successful radiation with little or no side affects and safe travels to and from Baton Rouge each day! Macy is doing well, please continue to pray for her as well!

Betty Taylor

Pray for Betty as she gets a new medication in her eye today.  Her back is better now.

Debbie and David Bales

Debbie has had a continuing problem with her legs, but is doing better.  She is thrilled to report that her son, David, had some recent tests that yielded good results.  Thank God for their great reports.

Debbie Miller

Pray for Debbie and her family as her health issues continue to be addressed.

Do you remember the “kind gentleman” who had a recent procedure?

Please continue praying for him and his family.

Mrs. Doris Young

Betty Simpson’s sister has had more testing.  Pray for her as she awaits results.

Mr. Burnell Simpson

Mr. Burnell Simpson was hospitalized for a few days, but has been released now.  Please add him to your prayer list.

Mansell Stinson

Mansell said he appreciates your continued prayers as he continues to heal “in God’s time”.

Kenneth and Yvonne Birch

Both Kenneth and Yvonne seem to have overcome their recent problems.  Thank God for that good report.

VBS at FBC, Kentwood – Day 4 and going strong.  If your children/grandchildren have not been attending, it is not too late for them to get in two great days of VBS.

I love to teach children about missions.  My own missionaries will be returning “home” next month.  Pray for them as they sort through things and pack for the return trip. I thank God for this year, the first, the grandchildren had in American schools.  Thank God for the new friendships that have been made, the new missionaries that have been trained, and the friendships overseas that will continue to thrive.  Pray for their ministry to be fruitful.

You have lots of opportunities to serve God today.   One opportunity is to freeze food to be given to some local families.  It comes in so handy so them can have some home-cooked meals when that is no longer able to happen in their home.

  • Freeze about 2 cups of food in a quart-size bag.
  • Label and date the bag.
  •  Freeze it.
  • Sunday, bring the bags of food to my classroom before Sunday School.
  • The food will be delivered to some very appreciative people Sunday afternoon.

Late Wednesday Afternoon

Beverly Rohrbacker said there was hope for her cousin Mike Miller (not the one from Kentwood).  His main problem is fungal, not bacterial.  Please keep praying.

Dr. Derry Magee – Message written by Mrs. Dora Magee to Mrs. Velta Morris.

Derry passed away today, June 3, at 3:18 p.m.  We are doing fine!

Praise God!  He is free of pain!

Jeana, daughter of Ricky and Brenda Russell of Chesbrough

Ricky took Brenda to Lakeview because she is unable to stand the pain any longer.  I’m not sure what the doctors will do, but will give you and update at some point.

Wednesday

“That I may open my mouth boldly

to make known the mystery of the gospel . . .

that in it I may speak boldly,

as I ought to speak.”

~Ephesians 6:19b-20, NKJV~

(This is my prayer for each and every  teacher at any VBS in any church this summer.)

Mike Miller

Yesterday, Beverly Rohbacker asked for prayer for her cousin, Mike Miller.  She quickly told me he is NOT the Mike Miller from Kentwood.  This Mike had polio as a child.  I asked was he from Roseland.  Yes, he is the one many of us knew many years ago.  He is now 59 and in ICU at Brookhaven.  Please pray for Mike and his family.

Jadon’s Journey

We have been spending alot of time in waiting rooms. Dentist said no cavities for Jacob and Jadon. Orthotic specialist said we will order new braces for Jadon at the end of July. ENT said Jacob has to have his tubes removed next Tuesday and neurologist said that Jadon is doing fantastic. After Tuesday we should be done for a while!!

Kathy Smith

I don’t know all the details, but Bro. Danny Smith’s wife has had surgery followed by additional problems.  Please pray for Kathy and her family.  Bro. Danny is so faithful to visit Kentwood people who are hospitalized.  We certainly need to add them to our prayer list.

Eleanor Morris

Eleanor Morris went to her doctor yesterday.  She had some chest pains and was rushed to OLOL and admitted.  The doctor DOES NOT think she had a heart problem, but she was admitted for tests to learn more.  She should be released today unless results from tests show a need for a longer stay.  As you pray for her, pray for her family.  Eleanor is usually the caregiver for them.

New Baby – Rebekah Josephine Humphrey

Rev. and Mrs. Byron Humphrey of Roseland  and Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Humphrey, grandparents, are proud of this new child in the family.  She was born yesterday (7.16 lbs & 19.5 inches).  I know her great-grandmother “Miss” Jo (Josephine Williams of Amite) is smiling down from Heaven.

East Fork Baptist Church

A team from East Fork has gone to Houston to do “mud-out” following the flooding last week.  Thank God for a team that is trained and ready to go and serve others.  May their efforts lead to opportunities to share Jesus.  Way to go, East Fork!

VBS at The Lord’s Church

Next week, June 8-12, TLC will have VBS from 6:00 – 9:30 Monday – Friday.  Their theme is “Fun Run”.  You can call 229-8621 or visit www.thelordschurchkentwood.org for more information.

Rev. Charles Kirkfield

A former student from Independence said Rev. Charles Kirkfield passed away.  He was the pastor in Independence for many years.  I taught both of his children and had several connections to him and his family.  Please pray for the family at this time.  Thank God for a man who served Him for so many years.

Operation Christmas Child – I trust you are collecting for October, 2015 packing.

Julia was born in Ukraine into a family full of poverty, pain and addiction. When she was 8-years-old, Julia’s father took all of their possessions and left her and her mother. One day, her mother was invited to church by a friend and gave her life to the Lord. Soon after, Julia’s church received brightly colored shoeboxes. Julia not only got a gift that day, but finally something to call her own. In her box she found candy, jewelry and other girl items. Julia said the shoebox gift gave her hope of a safe place. Eventually, Julia started working with the group who delivered the shoebox gifts and began reaching out to other children who grew up like she did. Julia’s own shoebox gave her more than material items; it gave her hope and reminded her that the Lord would keep her safe.

“Tell them to use their money to do good.

They should be rich in good works

and should give happily to those in need,

always being ready to share with others

whatever God has given them.

By doing this they will be storing up

real treasure for themselves in heaven —

it is the only safe investment for eternity!

And they will be living a fruitful Christian life

Summer Mixon

Update 6/1:

Summer Mixon is being transferred to Tulane tomorrow if all goes as planned. Her liver enzymes and bilirubin keep going up so they are moving her to where the liver specialist is located. Thank you to Donnie Stratton for taking care of our girl, we are so blessed to have you in our life. Thank you everyone for all the prayers, Jesus has this and we are believing that she will be healed.

Rev. Bill Ichter was the youth minister when I was a child.  Later, God sent Jennie to Brazil to teach his grandchildren for two years.  We stay connected.

Tomorrow,June 2,we celebrate 66 years of marriage. It will be a bitter sweet occasion. Joy and gratitude to God for these years;BUT sadness because my dear wife,-for sometime now has had Alzeimers, an illness that little by little takes all of the personality from the person. We are grateful to God,because if He had not given us long lives(I will be 90 this year, and she will be 85.) we would not have the problems we are having, problems that normally affect older people.

She has been a faithful and virtuous woman;admirable mother of 4 children she dedicated much of her time taking care of while I traveled all over Brazil and other parts of the world; an exemplary grandmother and great grandmother. God has been very merciful to us, because she perceives absolutely nothing. that is happening to her.,however those of us who take care of her see her precious personality disappearing little by little.I am so grateful to God for having brought Alana and Ron back after serving 31 years in Brazil exactly at this time that I need them so much.

VBS, Day 2 at FBC, Kentwood begins at 8:30 this morning.

There will be no Friday morning Bible study this week because of VBS.

Frozen Food for Families

Sunday, is our day to bring frozen food to my Sunday School room so it can be distributed later that day.  Share some by placing it in quart size freezer bags and labeling it.

Sylvester Humphrey (Director of Hope Center)

Sylvester was discharged from the hospital today; nearly two weeks in the hospital. Thank you all for the prayers. Please continue to pray for his complete recovery, as he still has some time before he is completely well. His blood count is still really low, and will be requiring Home Health, antibiotics, PT, respiratory treatments, etc. God is so good. He has blessed us through all of this. It is a blessing to have so many praying for him!! We love you all!!!

Doug Toney

Sunday May 31, 2015
Update: Doug is doing so much better, but has a very very long road of healing ahead of him. He was cleared to eat yesterday, but is having trouble with that. It will take time. He is awake more and talking more. Please continue to pray.

Summer Mixon

Update 5/31:  Summer Mixon is in a room, she is still having issues with her bilirubin being elevated. The doctors are consulting with a Tulane and Ochner liver specialist to discuss the next step in her recovery. As of now they are thinking she will need to be moved to Tulane or Ochner to be where the specialist is located but have not made any arrangements to move her as of yet. Thank you everyone for the continued prayers.

Koltyn Gafford

Koltyn is progressing very well with his therapy. He is able to pull his head up and hold it upright from a pull to sit position. This picture was taken while Brad was carrying him and he was picking his head up off his shoulders all by hisself.
His arms and legs are moving all over the place.
He is able to roll to his side unassisted.
He hates tummy time.
Just the other day we were given/donated a stander that helps him build his leg muscles back up. He has been able to stand in it for about 15mins at a time without his knees buckling, which is awesome. His personality is definitely starting to come back a lil more each and everyday. Anytime you talk to him he smiles or even chuckles back at you. This has been the greatest accomplishment for me to watch so far!
He is starting to recognize things and people a lot better. Kyler is able to keep him smiling and laughing all the time. He loves to watch his favorite character Marshal on Paw Patrol, it makes him laugh as well.
We are still having some issues with seizures which some days are better than others but aren’t going to get us down. We keep striving to get him to his next level of achievement. He is a very strong brave lil boy and will continue to progress each and every second of everyday.

Doug Toney is also progressing.  Please continue to pray for endurance for a long recovery for both Doug and Sandy.

Robbie Lynn Callihan Kirby has, thankfully, completed two years since being cleared of pancreatic surgery.  Please continue to pray for her.

Dr. Derry Magee is preparing for his heavenly home and will get his ticket there in a few days.  He family is arriving to be there for his “departure”.  I must add that he and “Miss” Dora were so special to our family when we moved to Kentwood.  We, like many others, felt a big hole in our town when they had the opportunity to go to Texas A&M.  Heaven will be gaining a great Christian man.

Michael (Mickey) Joseph Catalanotto

Born: May 14, 1933
Died: May 28, 2015

Michael (Mickey) Joseph Catalanotto, 82, passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2015 at his home in Roseland, LA. He was born May 14, 1933 in Amite, LA to Charles and Lucy Bellavia Catalanotto. Mickey grew up in Amite, LA. He attended Amite High School where he became known as “Cadillac” Catalanotto and was the “STAR” fullback for the Warriors. He continued his football career in college at LSU and played on the Freshman Baby Bengals team. “Cadillac” was known for “eating up a lot of yardage through the middle and off the ends.” Mickey married Betty Jean Strickland in 1953 in Raymond, MS. They were happily married for 63 years at the time of his death. Mickey began his teaching career at Kohn Junior High School in New Orleans where he taught and coached for 27 years. He completed his last three years as a teacher and coach at Independence High School. Mickey was a 3rd degree member of Knights of Columbus, Council 10911, and was instrumental in organizing the semi-annual Chicken Barbeques held at St. Helena Catholic Church Hall. Mickey was an avid outdoorsman. During the summer months, he spent time on his custom built shrimp boat, “Big Blue”. A good yield would be 800 pounds of shrimp and 3 hampers of crabs in one night. When Mickey and Betty moved to Roseland in 1982, he had a special connection with the land where he lived and would take great pride in grooming it and raising cattle. One of his favorite things to do was fishing. He always had an entertaining tale to tell after fishing with his friends or family. Mickey loved hunting with his beloved sidekick, Mocha. He was so proud of Mocha’s accomplishment as a Hunting Retriever Champion and played a big role in training Mocha. Mickey is survived by his spouse, Betty Strickland Catalanotto of Roseland; his children, Michael Charles Catalanotto (Toni) of Kenner, Judith Catalanotto Tesvich (Peter) of Hammond and one brother, Emile Catalanotto (Brenda) of Amite. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Amanda Tesvich Brown (Mark) of Charlottesville, VA, Preston Luke Tesvich of Melbourne, FL and Madison Laurel Catalanotto of Baton Rouge. In addition, Mickey is survived by a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Mickey was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Catalanotto and Lucy Bellavia Catalanotto. A funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Mark Beard and visitation will be held at St. Helena Catholic Church Hall at 122 South 1st Street, Amite, LA 70422 (985) 687-8422 on Monday, June 1, 2015. Visitation will begin at 8:30 AM and a funeral mass will begin at 12:00 Noon. Burial will follow the funeral mass at Greensburg Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Nic LaBarbera, Mark Kolwe, Greg Marten, J.E. Lee, Mark Catalanotto and Daniel Goldsby.
