Erin Neal Tamporello

March 24, 1955 – November 11, 2022

A resident of Norco, LA, passed away on Friday, November 11, 2022 at her home. She was born March 24, 1955 in New Orleans, LA and was 67 years of age.

She is survived by her husband Anthony Frank Tamporello Jr.; sons Anthony F. Tamporello III and Michael A. Tamporello; daughters Michelle C. Tamporello and Melissa A. Tamporello; three grandchildren Matthew H. Tamporello, Anthony M. Tamporello, and Elise A. Tamporello; and four furry grandchildren Stormy, Quinn, Crow, and Honey Bun. She was preceded in death by her parents Alma Hoffstadt Neal and Mike Hamilton Neal Jr.; sister Patricia C. Neal; and brother Michael H. Neal. Erin loved holidays, most notably Halloween. She was well known for dressing up in scary costumes, decorating her house to be extra spooky, hiding behind corners and scaring her children and grandchildren in all manners of ways. Erin made birthdays very special for each loved one. She put her entire heart into making sure you felt loved and celebrated. Erin loved fishing with her husband, tanning on the beach, doing embroidery, and spending time with her loved ones. She will be forever missed.

Pallbearers will be her sons Michael Tamporello and Anthony Tamporello, daughters Michelle Tamporello and Melissa Tamporello, grandson Matthew Tamporello, nephew Michael Guidry, and dear friend Doug Maudit.

I was notified of the death of another classmate yesterday. Judy Lynn Field Crawford grew up in Fluker and lived in Hammond in recent years. No obituary is available yet.

There was excitement in the air yesterday as 1,075 “Shoeboxes” were turned in. We had great volunteers working to get them carefully moved from vehicles to the church and packed in cartons. The “Shoeboxes” were prayed for as they made it to the tables inside. The shoppers and packers from each church are commended for a job well done.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

Finally, the day has arrived when we, volunteers at FBC, Kentwood, begin eight days of serving as a Drop Off location for “Shoeboxes. Locations in eight countries will be manned with volunteers who are anxious to work to get the “Shoeboxes” collected and moved to their next destination on the trip to many, many boys and girls around the world during the coming year. Many thanks to all those who donated items, packed, or transported them for their next step. Many thanks also for the men and women who will be packing cartons and/or transporting them during these eight busy days.

THANKFULNESS – DAY 14

Today, I am thankful to be a small part of the big process in getting “Shoeboxes” to very needy children around the world. Hopefully, each box will be a step in a child learning about Jesus. May the Shoeboxes be instrumental in introducing a child, a family, and their village to Jesus.

I want to give you an update on me. This week makes six months since my first fall. Today, I want to declare myself well. That’s not saying my feet don’t hurt or swell sometimes, but it is saying I can walk again on my own. In other words, I’m not 100%, but I am an A-. I plan to keep improving until I am 100%!

Today, I am thankful I can walk again. but I am thankful for all who helped me get this far and to those who offered kind words of encouragement along the way. I’m thankful to God for healing my feet.

Today, let’s take the focus off ourselves and think about those who have trouble, either permanently or temporarily, in getting around. I can “Put myself in their situation”, but even if you have not “Been there”, try to do so in your mind. Be kind, understanding, and even helpful as you give them a word of encouragement .

Bill Lambert is much better. He is back at work. He expressed his appreciation for all the prayers on his behalf.

Thankfulness Day 12

Today, I am thankful for babies. In the last year I was blessed with a great-newphew. David’s family has been blessed with a great nephew and is looking forward to a great niece in a couple months. New babies in the family keep it growing and busy. They are part of God’s plan for families.

Prayer Focus -Babies

Today, let’s pray for babies. They are what keeps families growing. Babies are also one way our churches grow. God bless all the young families in our churches. Please pray for babies today – family, church, neighborhood, etc. Invest some time in them and be greatly blessed.

Today is the perfect day to do some tasks in preparation for tomorrow. Your tasks might include selection of clothing, preparing a lesson, beginning preparation for a special meal, Bible study, checking with a neighbor on giving them a ride to church, etc. Do whatever works best for your family.

Shirley Ruth DeVane

Shirley Ruth DeVane, 76, passed away peacefully on Nov. 5, 2022, with her family by her side.

Born in Amite, La., Ms. DeVane spent most of her life in the Hammond, La. area. She retired after many years at the Hammond Medicaid Office within the Louisiana Department of Health.

Ms. DeVane most enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her three loving daughters and their families. She loved to read, play bingo, needlepoint and sew. She played piano and loved music. She was a member of New Beginnings Christian Church (formerly Happywoods Church of God) where she played the organ and was a longtime member of the choir.

Ms. DeVane went back to college later in life and even attended classes with her oldest daughter, graduating from Southeastern Louisiana University with her Bachelor’s degree in 1997.

Ms. DeVane is survived by her daughters Monét Whitson, Amber Wells and Melissa Lopez; grandchildren Morgan Robinson, Garrett Robinson, Regan Wells, Ethan Wells, Sophia Lopez and John Lopez; sister Bette White; nieces Beth Wolfe, Toni Graves and Laurie White; and nephews Brian Easley and Stephen White. She was preceded in death by parents Clyde and Verna Mae DeVane; sisters Mary Alice DeVane, and Joyce Easley; niece Carolyn Tackett; and nephews Bart Tackett, David White Jr. and Edwin Easley.

THANKFULNESS – Day 11

Today is Veterans’ Day. My immediate family has never been large. My family members who served were: My daddy, Grant Smith – WWII, Pacific region, My uncle, Alfred Smith, Viet Nam, Injured at Plei Mae, My uncle, Fred Widas, Europe, WWII. My uncle, Charles Tolleson, military band in Germany , Cousins Scott Tolleson and Rick Widas – 1970’s, David’s brother, Jimmy Alford who served in Europe in 1960’s. Grandson, Miles Hatchel – Stationed at AF Base in New Jersey, and a future AF member, a senior in high school. David had an uncle, Hollis Alford, killed in France in WWII.

I’m thankful and proud of this military history. I’m thankful and proud of ALL who have served or are serving. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!

Please say special prayers for Jane Wickham. Yesterday, she was in rehab following knee surgery and fell, breaking bones in her other leg. May she feel love and encouragement today. May her healing progress without any additional issues.

Infant Cooper Creel will be having some surgery. Pray for him and his sweet family.

Add Fay Gehringer to you prayer list, please. She returned from a trip to the Holy Land and developed Covid. Thankfully, it doesn’t seem to be a bad case.

Laurie Miller is still waiting on recent test results about her back. Pray they will be available soon and a plan of action is developed.

Mrs. Mildred’s Birch‘s heart procedure was NOT yesterday. It will be next Wednesday.

Today, I am thankful for medical care that is available for all of us when we need it. These professionals are available for preventive care as well as at a time of sickness or injury. There are many specialists available to us twenty four hours a day and without going to major cities.

Today, I am thankful that I had my dream job, teaching. I know I worked hard and did my best to teach my students. It wasn’t an easy job, but the reward of seeing students later and hearing of their dreams and successes is wonderful. I can say I have taught people in education today, medical professionals in many fields, pilots and people in the space industry, lawyers, law enforcement, military, fast foods to chefs, and even more teachers. I hope each of them are serving in their own dream jobs. I also hope you can enjoy the wonderful retirement years. that follow.

On Sunday, October 30th, Coach Gary Micajah Hendry, Sr., beloved husband of Linda Stegall Hendry for 55 years, went to heaven to be with His LORD and Savior, Jesus Christ and to be reunited with his precious sons Gary Micajah Hendry, Jr. and Michael Warren Hendry.

Most people just called him coach because of his love for football and his team. I could list all of his many accomplishments and they would be impressive, but the thing that stands out in my mind is the number “4”. Whenever he would see his former players they would say, “I remember coach: Number 1 is God, number 2 family, number 3 books and number 4 football.” All he worked with knew that his team would begin and end with prayer.

Gary was an ordained deacon and served faithfully for many years until his health declined. He was a man that never lied and always stood by his word, but the thing he would want everyone to know is that he was a sinful man, saved by GRACE through FAITH in JESUS CHRIST, the SON of GOD. Gary would want you to know that he did nothing, nothing at all , to earn or deserve the gift of the Lamb. He only needed to accept and believe. “I’ve seen the Lord,” he cried. “He is my life today!” “He is my precious Savior!” “My Rock!” “My Lamb!” “My way!” “I can say with confidence that I’ll never be the same, since I met the Savior and he called me by my name!”

Gary was preceded in death by his mom and dad, Maybelle and Louis Hendry, his sister, Jerrye Kaye Rawls and husband, Willie: his younger brothers, Beau Hendry and Bennett Hendry, his brother-in-law, Robert Benton Stegall, Jr., and his sons Gary Micajah Hendry, Jr., and Michael Warren Hendry.

Those who will miss him most are his wife, Linda Stegall Hendry: grandson, Corbin Micajah Hendry, and mom Laurie: sister, Terrye Rhame and husband Jerry: cousin and wife, Shirley Littell and Deborah: Leslie Cleveland and husband Arthur: nieces Hannah Stegall, Sarah Stegall, Lydia Stegall Mendheim, Tonya Perniciaro, Jackie Davis, Amy Ballard, Debbie Moye, Deanna Straight, Cheyenne Hendry, Savannah Stein: nephews, David Rawls, Shane Hendry, and Clint Hendry.

Services will be held at First Baptist Church in Amite Louisiana on Saturday, November 5, 2022. Visitation from 9:00AM until 11:00AM, service at 11:00AM, interment at Arcola-Roseland Cemetery.

Today, I am thankful for my six grandchildren, three girls and three boys, ranging in age from 18 to 24. They live in four different states and are all doing well. They are a close-knit bunch. Best of all, they are all Christians!

PRAYER FOCUS FOR TODA’S SHOEBOXES

As we focus on collection of Shoeboxes that begins a week from today, let’s focus on what needs to be done to help churches/organizations to finalize their packing.. What’s needed? Who’s going to do it? Transportation plans? Postage funds? Have all the boxes been prayed over? Etc.

Each box is important because each child is important. I can only dream of children in heaven one day who meet the person who packed the shoebox the child received and how they will love sharing how that box made an eternal difference for the child and family members. Dream with me. Paint a picture. Write a song. Regardless, there are millions of children who will be impacted this year. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PART! SAY A PRAYER OF THANKS FOR EACH SHOEBOX.

THANKFULNESS – Day 7 = VOLUNTEERS

Today, I am thank for for volunteers. They come in all forms and meet many needs. Some are male, but others female. Some are younger than others. Most of them volunteer knowing there is no earthly paycheck. They volunteer because they recognize a need. Today, I am especially thankful for the volunteers who will “man” the drop off sites in the eight countries that “collect and ship them”. Without volunteers, many things would never be accomplished!

Volunteer for something that is important to you.

Thankfulness – Day 6

Today, I am thankful to be able to invite people to worship with us at FBC, Kentwood. It might be at the grocery story or even at a funeral. I hope it is like a seed in someone’s mind and that they might act upon it one day if and when God speaks to their heart.

Today’s Prayer Focus

Today, I hope you will think of several homebound people and pray for them. David and I have been temporarily homebound on several occasions. It’s hard, but teaches an appreciation for those whose circumstances don’t improve. It also brings such a longing into your heart to be with other Christians and to worship together.

A Special Blessing

Blessings slip up and enter our hearts when we least expect them. Yesterday, I spoke to a lady who told me that she prays for me. She really caught me off-guard when she told me I had been on her prayer list for a number of years and she had prayed for me earlier in the day.. This sincere senior adult was such an encourager. I want to be worthy of her time and dedication for all those prayers.

Another Special Lady

David and I, individually, were able to speak to Mrs. Ann Chapman and Deloy Chapman yesterday. She looks great! Her smile is as big as ever. God has blessed her with many years, years long after Mr. Quincy’s death. I knew her before we moved to Kentwood and was surprised when I was taken to her Sunday School class when I entered FBC, Kentwood shortly before we moved from Roseland. She was such an inspiration to me years ago and again yesterday. (Mr. Quincy and my daddy both worked for the telephone company.)

I hope you can say you have some people you have been able to look up to for many years and who impacted your life in a positive way.

This is the Lord’s Day. Keep it that way.
