Marilyn Crawford

June 03, 1942 – July 28, 2021

Marilyn Crawford, a resident of Kentwood, LA, passed away on Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at St. Helena Nursing Home in Greensburg, LA. She was born June 3, 1942 in New Orleans, LA and was 79 years of age. She is survived by her son, Randy Crawford; daughter, Becky Crawford and Otis Brewer; grandson, Chase Crawford and wife Taylor-Ann; granddaughter, Kaysie Crawford; soon to be born great-granddaughter, Prezley-Ann Crawford; 2 sisters, Jeanne Kelting and Fay Kelting. Preceded in death by her parents, Gene and Lucille Kelting; husband, Russell Crawford. Marie W. Smith

July 27, 2021

Marie W. Smith, 84, of Amite, LA peacefully went to be with the Lord on July 27, 2021 of natural causes.

Marie was born in Leonia, NJ to Louis and Marie on October 16, 1936. She went to college for many different avenues. Settling into Bell South Telephone Company for 40 years. She broke through many barriers to rise to the top. Marie was always a very hard worker while raising her five children.

Marie is survived by her loving children, Warren (Tara) Buonagura, Marie (Henry) Giroir, Lisa (Tee) Cambre, Dr Angela (Matthew) Buonagura Lyle, and Dr Christina Givens.  Marie’s qualities were limitless but she will be most remembered for her unconditional love of her family, especially her grandchildren, Amanda, Royce, Gavin, Travis, Lindsey, Lane, Devin, Melina and Mary Katherine. She was predeceased by her parents, five brothers; Teddy, Frank, Louis, Manny, Joe and her husband John Smith.

Marie loved to travel with her kids, ride horses, all the different animals on the farm, four-wheelers, swimming, theme parks, cruises. Some of her favorite trips were Buffalo River Trail Ride in Tennessee and Theme Parks in Orlando. She loved country music, especially Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. Oh that would be playing over and over again on the road trips! She loved all of her collectibles/treasures and now her grandchildren do the same.

Marie also loved her town of Amite. She moved here about 35 years ago. The most recent years with Devin and Melina at their school, Oak Forest Academy (OFA). She could often be seen in the carline and at their many activities. 

She may have left us in body, however she will never, ever, leave us in spirit.

Visitation hours will be held from 12:00-2:00 PM on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at McKneely Funeral Home in Amite, LA with prayer service following at 2:00 PM.

Today’s Prayer Focus

One change in our churches since the Covid-19 problem surfaced is the number of churches providing online services. David and I had started online worship with our church before that time due to his health issues. It’s been a great means of worship for us. Let’s pray for churches as they continue to adapt to meet needs of the people. Pray also for those who have been trained and give of themselves regularly so people like us can continue to be a part of the services from out homes. God provides a way.

• Specific requests: Healing for his lungs, Vitals to remain stable, Weaning off the ventilator.

Lonnie Bryan Pope, Sr. , a resident of Amite, LA, passed away on Friday, July 23, 2021 at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, LA. He was born December 19, 1943 in Amite, LA and was 77 years of age. He is survived by his son, Lonnie Bryan Pope, Jr. and Paul Eric Letulier; son, Michael Todd Pope; daughter, Sheila Renee Granat; daughter, Melissa Duffy; numerous grandchildren, great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews; sisters, Betty Caroll and Carol Crowe and husband Jerry; dear friends Glenda and Troy Cox; his constant companion “Midnight”. Gibbie McMillan is still being treated for Covid-19 in ICU at North Oaks. Katera, his wife, said he is on 100% oxygen and requests we pray for his lungs to heal.

Beth Hiller, the lady from Hammond who recently came to FBC, Kentwood to present a plaques for five years of serving as an OCC drop-off location, fell yesterday morning. She broke a leg and a hip and has already had surgery. Pray for her as she goes through recovery and rehabilitation.

The number of people in our area with Covid-19 seems to still be increasing. Please be careful not to “share” it with others. Try not to place yourself in a situation where you could “pick-up” the virus.

I’m so thankful for online church services, not just the mega churches, but our local services too. It’s so special to get to participate in our church services from home when circumstances do not allow us to be there in person.

Let’s continue to pray for medical personnel who do their jobs even when they know they are placing their own health in jeopardy. Let’s all try to reduce their chances to getting sick by taking the suggested precautions.

James Aubrey Reid

1942 – 2021

James Aubrey Reid, husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed away on Sunday, July 11, 2021. He was the third of five sons of Dorothy Gaines Reid and Shelby S. Reid, Jr. born on January 28, 1942 in Magnolia, MS.

He graduated from Amite High School and Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

He will be fondly remembered by his classmates as one of those Reid boys, an outstanding young leader, chosen President of the Class of 1960 and elected Mr. Amite High School.

Jimmy lived briefly in Florida, but spent most of his life in Louisiana where he worked early on as a typesetter at The News Digest, and then the Morning Advocate. For over thirty years, Jimmy was a regular at the courthouse, where he worked as an abstractor for local attorneys. He was an Eagle Scout and for over 20 years was a Boy Scout Leader. But his pride in life was being an Auxiliary police officer for The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office. His greatest joy came from raising his granddaughter, MaKaylyn.

He was proceeded in death by his wife, Marsha Mistoler Reid, by his father, Shelby S. Reid, Jr., his mother, Dorothy Gaines Reid, his infant sister, Doris Elizabeth Reid, his older brother, Shelby S. Reid, III, and sister-in-law Evelyn Hendry Reid.

Those left to remember him are his son, Scott Mistoler Reid of Roseland, his granddaughter, MaKaylyn Reid and three great grandchildren Austin J. Spears, Lydia Gail Spears, and Ke’Daya Rain Cox of Wilma, Louisiana. Jimmy leaves three brothers, Lawrence W. Reid (Larry) and his wife, T.J. of Amite, Davis Gaines Reid (Mike) of Springfield, and Charles Morgan Reid (Chuck) and his wife, Cindy of Amite. He leaves numerous nieces and nephews and friends.

Memorial Services will be held Friday, July 23 at Claire’s on Mulberry Street in Amite. Visitation from 3 til 6, with services at 6 p.m.

Billy Bean, Jr. of Gillsburg, MS

Age 64

Funeral services for Mr. Willie J. (Billy) Bean, Jr., 64, will be held at 2 P.M. on Sunday, July 25, 2021 at Gillsburg Baptist Church. The Reverend Austin Bean will officiate. Mr. Bean, a resident of Gillsburg, died at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in McComb on Thursday, July 22, 2021. Billy, the son of the late Willie J “Billy” Bean, Sr. and the late Gwendolyn Lawson Bean, was born on November 27, 1956 in Magnolia, Mississippi.He was also preceded in death by his special brother, Tim Bean, whom he loved dearly. Mr. Bean was a retired dairyman, a member of Gillsburg Baptist Church, a member of the NRA, and an avid hunter.Mr. Bean is survived by one brother, Barry Bean and wife, Roxanne of Madison, Mississippi; two sisters, Jane Harden and husband, Eddie of Montgomery, Texas and Robin Kent and husband, Kyle of Mandeville, Louisiana. He leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.Pallbearers will be: Brennan Kent, Brandon Kent, Kyle Kent, Brent Bean, Brad Bean, Eddie Harden, and Brayden Havard. Honorary pallbearers are: Ed Bean, Ricky Williams, Jimmy Hutson, James Hughes, Hugh Ray Hughes, Jeffrey Wall, Darin Newman, Dale Hughes, and Barry Felder.Visitation will be Sunday, July 25, 2021 at 1:30pm until the service at 2:00 pm at Gillsburg Baptist Church.Burial will follow the service in the Gillsburg Cemetery with Hartman-Jones in charge of the arrangements.

Pray for our leaders worldwide, nationally, and locally as decisions are made about Covid. I’m not sure any of us has all be directions. Turn to God for help in your decision making.

Please continue to pray for Ritchie Yarborough as he continues to recover from surgery.

Please pray for Bro. Gibbie McMillan who has been hospitalized at North Oaks for a week and a half with covid. He’s fighting a big battle. Use your prayer times to pray for him and his family, some of whom have had lighter cases of covid.

Many families in our community seem to have multiple family members sick with covid. Pray families will work hard to contain, not spread, the disease.

Hospitals are full. Staff are overworked and stressed. Several friends have shared that they are working extra long hours to help overcome the covid. The governor has reinstated the mask mandate. Be sure to do your part to prevent the spread of this airborne disease. I’ve heard numerous reports that those sick mainly are younger and not vaccinated.

Today is the day we were to have a OCC shoebox workday. Due to the new covid outbreak, we will postpone the workday.

I know of several others in our community who have other issues. Please pray for them too.
