David‘s blood count was up to 7.7. The nurse practitioner said David will get a larger does of Procrit next week which should help his blood build itself up.

A resident of Amite, LA, passed away on Friday, July 12, 2019 at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, LA. He was born May 15, 1965 in Amite, LA and was 54 years of age. David’s legacy will live on through the multiple “gifts” he donated through the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency. Operation Christmas Child – School supplies are now widely available in stores. As you shop, keep your eyes open for items that will be useful in shoeboxes. Suggestions are single subject notebooks, copy paper, pencils, pens, crayons, markers, pencil sharpeners, big erasers, safety scissors, glue sticks, pencil boxes, etc. Your purchases can be left in the church office or in the Sunday School room next to the choir room. Thank-you for helping to provide items for the shoeboxes. Don’t miss the good deals.

Operation Christmas Child – fishing kits! I have received a bag of small containers that will be perfect for fishing kits. Items needed are fishing line, hooks, weights, and small floats.

Operation Christmas Child – Clothesline kits – Items needed are wooden clothespins and clothesline string.

Operation Christmas Child – Tic Tac Toe games – Items needed are flat glass stones and small felt or foam sheets.

Operation Christmas Child – Eating utensils. – Teaspoons are used in most places. You can either purchase spoons alone or you can get sets with a knife, fork, and spoon.

Operation Christmas Child – Sewing kits – Small spools of thread, sewing needles, assorted buttons, small scissors, etc. If you want to add some small pieces of fabric and trim, that would be good.

Operation Christmas Child – Necklace/bracelet kits – Assorted beads, cording, etc.

Operation Christmas Child – Miscellaneous items – Washcloths and soap, $1.00 flashlights and extra batteries, small stuffed animals, small dolls, small balls, jump ropes, dominoes, small plastic animals, small trucks and cars, small farm figure, but now military figures or weapons.

The WMU meeting scheduled for this morning at Spring Creek has been postponed. You will be notified when it is rescheduled.

Yesterday, I noticed a door hanger I have that says “Give Thanks”. November is not the only time to be thankful! Storm Barry can be described in many ways. This morning, I want to give you some examples of how people are giving thanks concerning Barry.

First, most people in Baton Rouge and New Orleans are thankful water was diverted from the Mississippi River preventing flooding in the cities. Meteorologists made some educated predictions that were helpful in people being prepared for the storm. Based on information available to them, some experts decided not to call for evacuation from areas that have previously flooded. This seemed risky at the time, but was apparently the correct call and avoided thousands of people from leaving their homes and cities unnecessarily.

Many people were first responders. I’m thankful for them and for not being one in the story named Barry. I thank God for their willingness to help and their safety as they helped others.

I personally know a number of people who elevated their furniture, but didn’t flood. One family that did that is Roy and Diane Turner. The work was hard. Their home did not flood, but they were prepared. They are thankful their home was spared and that they were able to prepare “just in case”.

I told David the route I was choosing to travel to church and back yesterday based on the number of trees that could have potentially fallen. Later, we saw Sherry Gill Simpson and her parents. They witnessed a tree falling across a highway, but they were still far enough away to be safe. They were thankful they were spared.

I know people who had camps to flood, but homes that are not flooded. I think they have to be thankful for a place to live that did not flood.

I know Louisiana Baptists will be working hard in the coming weeks to help those who had flooding. I’m thankful to be a part of this group, even though I cannot personally help this year. I know the home and business owners will be thankful for people who are willing to help them. I remember all the trips David and others made to the lower ninth ward of New Orleans following Katerina. People were thankful for help. David and the other volunteers were thankful to be able to help out. This is also true for the more local flooding in August 2016. Thanks to all those who help with disaster relief in any way.

Our power went off twice, Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. I’m thankful for the local men who work for Demco who got out in the bad weather and returned service to us. We were prepared to be without service for a longer period of time, but so thankful when it came back on.

I’m thankful for store employees who had to deal with lots of people wanting bread, snacks, etc. The delivery drivers we saw were working diligently for all the customers who would be purchasing food within a short period of time.

Who and what are you thankful for? Did you take time to thank God for your safety and that of your property, your church, your neighbors, etc? Did you think about the hours of family time people gave up to make life more convenient for us. We all benefitted from time and effort of many others. Were we polite and appreciative when we saw the people working?

Today is a good day to count our blessings! Where will you start? Who will you thank when you see them in the coming days? Does God know you are thankful? Did you tell Him?

We are receiving a hard rain right now. We are dry. The lights, television, etc are working. We are in our own home. Our neighbors are too. We’re thankful! How about you?

Fay Chadwick Todd is doing well following surgery. She thanks those who prayed for her.

The storm, Barry, is still around and still forecasted to bring us a lot of rain today. I know some churches have cancelled services for today. Other churches have adjusted schedules. Some churches will have church as usual. Other churches have not made a decision yet. Be sure you are aware of your church’s schedule.

I don’t know of any flooding or serious problems in our area. I do know that the Baptist Disaster Relief will be busy helping people who have damage. I did read about one church that had roof damage.

Prepare for a season of rain and the possibility of power outages.

Pray for Bryan and Brandon Tate as they travel to MD Anderson and back home today. Pray the weather does not interfere with the roads they will be traveling. Pray for a good report on Bryan’s health as he moves into 16 months of maintenance.

I turned the computer on twice during the night, but today has been unusually busy at the house: four friends checking on us, a nurse, a nurse practitioner, etc. Then, there have been the phone calls, mostly ones we didn’t want to have. This resulted in me not getting back to write TPL. I apologize. I suppose I should it written it early this morning. I must admit I’m thankful for all who came and all who called today.

Amber Prine Regan has had a good check-up this week at MD Anderson. She is celebrating her birthday, a one year since last surgery, and another good report. Thank God for all three of these things. Pray for her as she will begin another treatment soon.

Freddie Carter of Greensburg will begin another round of treatment. Thankfully, he has done well with the treatment so far. Keep Freddie, Tiny, and their children in your prayers.

Donnie Eudy, husband of my sister, Julie, had been fighting a battle with facial skin cancers. Thank God for his doctor who has worked diligently to help Donnie. Pray for Donnie as he is checked on a routine basis.

Mr. John Phillips is still in rehab. Pray for his bones to heal enough for him to be more independent and back at home.

Kathy Wales is progressing following her hip surgery. Pray for continues progress for her.

Gordon A. Burgess

July 16, 1934 – July 10, 2019

Gordon A. Burgess passed away peacefully on July 10, 2019 while being comforted by his wife of 65 years and his brother. During a life that began in Fouke, Arkansas on July 16, 1934, Mr. Burgess was a consummate provider. He provided by first being employed for the Kansas City Southern Railroad and later in the oilfield where he worked his way to owning Louisiana Casing Crew in Harvey. All of the influences, talents, and work experience culminated when he was elected Parish President of Tangipahoa parish were he provided, along with the hard work of a great number of people, a place many are very proud to call home. He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Independence and a U. S. Army Veteran. A loving husband, dad, uncle, brother and friend, Mr. Burgess always died to self in order to serve others. He was preceded in death by his father A.J. Burgess and his mother Estelle Duke Burgess. He is survived by his wife Margaret, their son Wade (wife Amy and son Alex), brother Paul (daughter Angela, sons Duke and Steve), sister Linda (husband Galen and daughters Kelli, Kristi, Regina, and Emily) nieces, nephews and a host of grand nieces and nephews. Mr. Burgess will lay in state at the Tangipahoa Parish Council Chambers, 206 E. Mulberry St., Amite, from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday. Visitation will be at House on the Rock Church, 727 W. David has seen doctors Monday and Tuesday. He is “hanging in there”. Yesterday, his blood level was 7.6. He got the Procrit injection.

Madison was back here last night. Jennie and Madison are “On the Road Again” traveling to Texas. Pray they have a good traveling day.

Jennie will stay here a couple more days and will go with us to see doctors Monday and Tuesday. We are blessed with a great family. Members of our extended family also helped with the party. Some church family helped by providing desserts and helping to make sandwiches. We appreciate all of you!
