Maddie’s Miracles (written yesterday)

Maddie will have a fine needle biopsy in the morning on a lymph node in her neck that has been there for a while. Doctor was waiting to see if it would go back to normal size and it hasn’t so they are going to check it out. She has the best doctors who truly care about catching any and everything that goes on with her. Prayers are appreciated and we know that God has her in the palm of HIs hand. God is good ALL the time. We should have results next week. Thank you prayer warriors!

I have been discharged from the hospital. Dropped my prescriptions off at the pharmacy. Tomorrow morning we will be headed home. Thanks everyone for the prayers and nice words of encouragement. Thanks to my wife Nikki Smith, my mother in law Patsy Lea and my mom Elaine Hue Smith for making the 20hr drive to be with me during my surgery. It meant the world to me. I can’t forget all the great friends that are up hear with me for helping out and checking on me.

Carol Bennett Sealey has improved, but still has more improvement ahead.

Ben Smith is still hospitalized in New Jersey, but should be able to leave the hospital soon. His parents are still by his side. The doctor said his gall bladder was really bad. Thankfully, he got medical care when he did. Pray for other family members too.

We will NOT be painting shoeboxes Saturday because of the services for Mr. Gaylon. That project will be rescheduled.

Please pray for Pete Hughes of Roseland. He will be having open heart surgery tomorrow to repair five blockages in his heart.

Buddy Waller was hospitalized because of heart blockages, but thankfully was found that they were not bad enough to require surgery. (Thanks, James, for sharing this.). Keep Buddy in your prayers as he continues his daily routine.

Ben Smith of Greensburg is hospitalized in New Jersey because of gall bladder surgery. He had a lot of infection and inflammation which cause the surgery to be done “the old way”.

Jewell R. Eaves

June 27, 1937 – September 09, 2019

On September 9, 2019 at 2:30 AM, Jewell Randolph Eaves was welcomed into the kingdom of Heaven. His wife and daughters were able to be in this peaceful moment knowing when he breathed his last breath, he was in Jesus’ arms. Known to others as JR, Sonny, dad, and grandpa, he was a great Christian man who was loved by many. JR was born 82 years ago on June 27th, 1937 in Texas. He served our country as a US Army 82 Airborne Paratrooper. He has worn many hats through his years, but his favorite ones were being a husband, father, granddad, and great grandpa. He wore those proudly. JR truly loved life and lived it to the fullest through the simple pleasures of fishing, hunting, farming, chicken raising, and watching over his friends and family. He is preceded in death by his parents Jewell Johnny and Nettie Mae Eaves and his brother Jerry and sister in law Pat Eaves. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Nadalee McNab Eaves, his sister Yvonne Woods, and his brothers Robert (Nancy) Eaves and Arthur (Sally) Beasley. He leaves a rich legacy starting with his children, his son Randy Eaves, and daughters Jennifer (Timmy) Thornton, Jolie (Scott) Gulledge, Joni (Garrett) Matherne, and Jamie Dehnel. He also leaves behind to carry on his humor, wisdom, and dreams- his 13 grand children- Nicole, Patrick, Travis, Jeremy, Justin, Allyssa, Jessica, Matthew, Katlyn, Ashton, Jacob, Natalee, and Aubrey and his 5 (and counting) great grandchildren. Family, friends, and others whose lives JR touched are invited to join us as we celebrate his life at Montpelier Baptist Church (2241 St. Helena Avenue. Montpelier, La 70422) on September 12th begining at 10 am. Services to follow at 12 PM and will be led by Bro Rusty Durand. The burial to follow in Montpelier Cemetery where he will be carried to his final resting place by his grandsons- Patrick Dehnel, Travis Thornton, Jeremy Dehnel, Justin Dehnel, Matthew Matherne, and Jacob Matherne. Even though we lay to rest the earthly body, we know JR is celebrating his joyous entrance into the Kingdom of Heaven to see friends and family. Connie Lee Madden Raborn

July 16, 1952 – September 08, 2019

Connie Lee Madden Raborn of Kentwood, Louisiana passed away September 8, 2019, surrounded by her family. Connie was born at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska on July 16, 1952, was a 1970 graduate of Fort Zumwalt High School, O’Fallon, Missouri, and a life-long Girl Scout. Connie married the love of her life, Sam Raborn, U.S. Air Force, Retired, on April 26, 1975, in Tucson, Arizona. She spent the next 20 years serving her country as a military wife, raising her three daughters, traveling the world, and participating in Girl Scouts. After retirement, they settled in Louisiana where Connie spent her time taking care of her cows, chickens, horses, and grandkids. There was nothing she loved more than spending time with her family. Connie was an active member of First Baptist Church of Arcola, where she enjoyed her ladies’ meeting and helping with Vacation Bible School. Connie was loved by everyone who knew her. She never met a stranger, and she spent her life caring for others, especially her beloved husband. She loved researching her family history, often traveling the world to follow in their footsteps. She was a friend and “mom” to everyone she met. Connie is preceded in death by her mother, Rose Lee Oetting Madden; her father, William Lee Madden, Sr.; her mother-in-law, Margaret Jones Raborn; and her father-in-law, Loid Noel Raborn. Left to cherish her memory is her devoted husband, Samuel Merwin Raborn; her daughters Margaret Elizabeth Raborn Andrews (Eric); Angela Darlene Raborn Stone (Rob); and Renee Sandra Raborn Molland (Quincy); her grandchildren, Dusty, Dakota, Ethan, Erica, Luke, Ella Rose, Samantha, Addison, Colleen, and Parker; her sisters, Dawn Carrigg and Susan Cleveland; her brothers, William Madden, Jr., and Shawn Madden; numerous nieces and nephews; her life-long best friend, Sandy Stefanski; and many, many more friends and family. The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church of Arcola on Thursday, September 12, 2019 from 6:00PM until 8:00PM and on Friday, September 13, 2019 from 10:00AM until the funeral service at 12:00 Noon. Interment will take place in Osyka Cemetery, Osyka, MS. Today, I want to focus on unspoken prayers. Many people keep their troubles to themselves for one reason or another. Remember these people as they carry a big load on their shoulders and in their hearts.

Fall Food Round-Up – September 16

Get your items turned in by the 15th. A list is available at FBC. Remember, this is to stock the LA Baptist Children’s Home for the next year. What an honor it is to help the children by providing food for their meals!

Katie McElveen will be sharing about the Georgia Barnette Offering at the Two Rivers WMU meeting on September 16th at Hillsdale. You will want to hear how our funds are used for missions in out state.

Remember our families with children and youth as they try to adjust to new schedules that include church, school, and extra activities. Pray that God guides them as they make both long-term and short-term decisions.

Continue to pray for those in the path of Hurricane Dorian and those who have traveled or will be be rushing to help in various ways.

Fall Food Round-Up – All food and cleaning supplies are to be picked up from FBC, Kentwood first thing Monday, September 16. Help support these children from the LA Baptist Children’s Home. This is our once-a-year food drive for them.

Two River’s Associational WMU will meet Monday, September 16 at 10 A.M. at Hillsdale Baptist Church. Katie McElveen will be sharing about how the Georgia Barnette Offering is used in Louisiana. A covered-dish meal will follow the meeting.

September 24th is the date of this month’s “Young” Ladies’ Birthday Party at The Cafe. Come for 11 A.M. The meeting is concluded with birthday cake for ladies with September birthdays.

Thank God for the decisions made at our local churches recently. May God continue to work in each church.

Yesterday seemed to be a big day for staff recognition in one form or another.

Bro. Danny Smith and family will be leaving SCBC to retire after serving there 28 years,
Bro. Bob Simpson and “Miss” Mary were honored for serving at Arcola for 40 years!

Caleb Estay had surgery to removed a nonfunctional shunt at Texas Children’s Hospital yesterday afternoon. All seems to have gone well. He will be watched and a decision will be made concerning putting in a new shunt. He is from a large family. His Kentwood family includes grandparents Mike and Catherine Estay and great grandparents Rufus and Margie Williams. Keep Caleb and his family in your prayers today.

Our neighbor, Adrian Phillips, passed away yesterday afternoon due to a heart attack. Please be in prayer for his many family members as they make funeral arrangements and plans for a future without Adrian. He will be missed by many friends.

Rufus Willians had eye surgery yesterday. Thankfully, they are better than the vehicle.

Linda Callihan told us yesterday, that she needs a procedure to remove a place on her back . She will be going to MDAnderson for that to happen Monday.

First Baptist Church, Greensburg is hosting a homecoming Sunday. You are invited to attend and even join them for lunch.

Gerald and Bea Miller had an accident yesterday. Thankfully, after being checked out, they learned they were okay and were able to go home.

Kurt Raynard Dillon

December 09, 1975 – August 06, 2019

Kurt Raynard Dillon, 43, of Summit, MS, passed from this life on Tuesday, August 6, 2019, at 2:00 PM at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, LA, from complications following a motorcycle accident on July 22, 2019.

He was born on December 9, 1975, in McComb, MS, to Keith and Patsy Dillon. Kurt was a Christian and a member of Johnston Chapel United Methodist Church where he attended regularly. He worked for many years as a painter, enjoyed riding his motorcycle, visiting with family and friends, talking with any and every one that would listen, and playing with his dog Sam. He was a loving son, brother, nephew and friend.

Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Ora Dillon, James Dillon, Ellis Pittman, Minnie B. Pittman and one uncle, Roy Dillon.

Survivors are his parents, Keith and Patsy (Pittman) Dillon of Brandon, MS; one brother, Micah (Pam) Dillon of Summit, MS; one nephew, Evan (Rachel) Dillon of Gonzales, LA; one aunt, Jackie (Allen) Jones of Albany, LA; three uncles, James (Martha) Dillon of Summit, MS; David (Joann) Dillon of Jayess, MS; Johnny (Helen) Pittman of Kentwood, LA; and several cousins and other family and friends.

Visitation will be on Friday, August 9, 2019, at Sharkey Funeral Home in Summit, MS, from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM. There will be a graveside service on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at New Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Easleyville, LA at 10:00 AM. Bro. Matthew Pharis will be officiating the services with Catchings-Sharkey Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Honorary pallbearers are James Lee Berch, David Dillon, Evan Dillon, James Dillon, Micah Dillon, Michael Wayne Ingle, and Johnny Pittman.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to New Zion Cemetery Association, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or charity of your choice.

Update on Adam. Infection has already started setting in. He goes back to the hand specialist tomorrow in Covington. We will know more tomorrow.

Mrs. Robert Pate

I talked with Mr. Pate yesterday while we were both pumping gas. He said his wife has been very ill and asked for prayers for her. She is 90. He is 91.

Operation Christmas Child – I believe in supporting this ministry because if impacts so many lives. Those of us who were not called to be career missionaries can impact many lives for Jesus through this ministry. One thing to remember is to “shop early and shop often”. That is my philosophy for packing lots of shoeboxes for boys and girls. I encourage you to watch the video I posted on Facebook yesterday and to look up Operation Christmas Child on Google. “Read all about it!” I think you will be encouraged to participate too.

David and I had a call from a friend who lives in a nearby town and who is involved in a local Baptist church. She is helping with OCC there. I was thrilled to hear her talk about the plans at her church and to learn of her excitement to spread “Jesus” one child at a time. I hope you have the same excitement.

Will you please add Adam to the prayer link. Sunday he got rebar though his hand. It went in about the middle of his hand below his little finger and came out by his index finger. He had to have emergency surgery to remove it. His index finger is numb and he can hardly move his fingers. Surgery went fine. He will go see a hand specialist tomorrow and we will find out what has to be done and if there is any more surgery that has to be done, and how much damage was done. Thank you

Hinsdale County Office of Emergency Management

We’re sad to report that a body found along the Rio Grande River has been identified as Tessie Strickland.

LAKE CITY, Colo., July 29, 2019 – On July 25 at approximately 4 p.m., the body of Tessie Strickland was found along the Rio Grande River in Hinsdale County. Hinsdale County Coroner Jerry Gray pronounced death at approximately 6:30 p.m. that evening.

The body was transported to the morgue at Montrose Memorial Hospital for identification and was positively identified late Tuesday afternoon, July 30. Strickland’s husband has been notified.

Mrs. Strickland, 64, of Kentwood, Louisiana, was reported missing on June 27 after being swept downstream in Pole Creek near the border of Hinsdale and San Juan counties. Her body was discovered approximately four miles downstream from where Pole Creek empties into the Rio Grande River.

Mrs. Strickland and her husband Tommy Strickland were returning to Silverton from a day trip to Creede, Colorado, on Forest Service Road 520, a four-wheel drive road that crosses Pole Creek. Although passable in the morning when the Stricklands crossed on their way to Creede, the creek had become swollen with spring runoff by the early evening when they returned. When the couple attempted to cross the creek again, their Jeep stalled in the fast-moving water and was carried downstream. In an effort to save themselves, the couple jumped for the stream bank. While trying to help his wife climb up the bank, Mr. Strickland said he was swept under the water. After resurfacing, Mr. Strickland could not see his wife and could not locate her. Passing motorists found Mr. Strickland and assisted him in notifying authorities.

Extensive search operations were conducted to locate Mrs. Strickland, which included more than 25 personnel from Hinsdale County Sheriff’s Department, Mineral County and San Juan County. Helicopter surveillance was provided by the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control. Personnel conducted foot searches along the banks of the Pole Creek and the Rio Grande River, a search and rescue dog was employed, and a drone was used for aerial searches in areas not accessible on foot.

October 16, 1937 – July 29, 2019

Gordon Jones, a resident of Amite, LA, passed away on Monday, July 29, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. He was born October 16, 1937 in Independence, LA and was 81 years of age. He is survived by wife of 57 years, Gloria S. Jones; 3 daughters, Arlene Jones Armstrong, Sonya Jones David and husband, Corey and Stacie Jones; 1 son, Allen Jones and wife Jonni; 9 grandchildren, Kristin Garner, Duane Garner, Timothy Cassidy, Christopher Hall, Deaven David, Rosita David, Ryan Jones, Matthew Jones and Macayla Jones; 9 great-grandchildren, Harleigh Cassidy, Calem Jones, Liam Jones, Jaxon Garner, Eli Garner, Kaiden Garner, Grayson Jones, Maisie Jones and Abby Mason; 1 brother, Herbert Jones; 2 sisters, Etta Baham and husband Gerald and Katherine McGlothern and husband Brad; 1 brother-in-law, Bobby Adams. Preceded in death by parents, Howard and Myrtis Jones; 1 sister, Rita Adams. Eleanor Morris said Buddy got another good report. That’s nine months of good reports! Thank you God, for giving the family this time.

Rebecca Seymour Rodriguez, formerly of Amite, had another cancer surgery yesterday in Savanna, GA. The surgery went well. Becky asks for your continued prayers.

Last night, I learned about a Missions and Ministry Luncheon at FBC, Greensburg that will be at eleven this morning. It is being done by the Louisiana Baptist Convention out of Alexandria.

I was thankful for the rain yesterday, especially since we were able to get home from Baton Rouge before the rain arrived. The rains have given little breaks from the high temperatures.
