Monday

“Your word is a lamp for my feet,

a light on my path.”

~Psalm 119:105 (NIV)~

Read the Bible in 2020 – April 27

  • Judges 7:1-8:17
  • Luke 23:13-43
  • Psalm 97:1-98:9
  • Proverbs 14:7-8

Nita Russell Miller is doing better and now tests negative for the virus.  She is not allowed to go back to the nursing home for thirty days, so she will be staying in the hospital as she regains her strength.  Pray for her and her family as she continues to improve.  Thank God for her improvement.

Lloyd Hayden of Arcola had a light stoke that has only left a little weakness.  He is scheduled to return home today.  Pray for him as he returns home for recovery.  Lloyd will get good care from four generations of ladies in his family.  Thank God for Lloyd’s good news.

Ollie Simmons is also doing better.  (Maybe I should call today Good News Monday.)  He has improved and will probably “bust out” of the hospital today.  This is another reason to thank God today.

While I’m on this line of thinking and thanking God, I would like to share again how much David has improved.  From being too weak to get up from a chair, needing blood (23 units), hospitalizations, a walker, a cane, tremendous weight loss, no appetite, malnourishment, more trips to the. doctor than I can count, etc., he is GREATLY improved.  Our neighbors are even reporting to other neighbors that he is working in the yard (and LOVING it).  I send Jennie pictures of him outside and working.  Her first word is “AMAZING!”.  We have an amazing God who has decided He has a reason to leave David here for His purpose.  We are so blessed.

I hope you were able to watch and enjoy some church services yesterday.  We were.  I want to remind you that the church services from numerous churches are available  online for us to view on other days of the week, not just on Sundays.

Ollie Simmons, young son of Stan and Bethany, had a successful knee surgery yesterday.  The results were better than hoped for.  Please continue to pray for Ollie.

I think the new methods of having church, drive-in and tune in, are really catching on.  Even some of the smallest churches are now getting involved in one way or the other.   David and I have enjoyed being able to “tune-in” to several services each Sunday.

FBC, Kentwood invites you to “tune-in” on Facebook or YouTube.

  • Sundays at 10:30 A.M.
  • Sundays at 6:00 P.M.
  • Wednesdays at 6 P.M.

This is Cooperative Program Sunday.  Some churches will be celebrating with a drive-through missions offering.  The Cooperative Program is vital in the work of our churches.

Read the Bible in 2020 – April 26

  • Judges 6:1-40
  • Luke 22:54-23:12
  • Psalm 95:1-96:13
  • Proverbs 14:5-6

I hope you realize that we have read one-fourth of the Bible so far this year, a small portion each day.  If you haven’t joined in yet, it is never too late to jump in and read with us.  If you get behind, it only takes a little extra reading to catch up.  I did just that yesterday.  In fact, I am a little ahead.

Hardcopies of the reading plan will be available at FBC.  Call and ask that a copy be set aside for you.

Another option is to refer to a list on your phone or computer.  The site is: https://www.oneyearbibleonline.com/readingplan/oneyearbiblereadingplan_1up.pdf

The last option is to listen to it being read for you.https://oneyearbibleonline.com/

One option for having Sunday School with your family online is https://bibleproject.com/church-at-home/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter&utm_campaign=quarantinemail&utm_content=image_of_god

You may want to set aside some time each week to do this with your family or to share it with your family to watch in their home.  Then, you can talk about it with them.

Let’s make sure our friends and families know about all these ways to have a substitute for gathering together at our churches during this time.

Saturday

For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom,

and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

~1 Corinthians 1:25~

I don’t know God’s plans, but I know He has plans and is in control.

Please add Rene Deck Terrell to you prayer list.  She fell at home over a week ago when she tripped over a stool and has some bad cuts and bruises.  Pray for her as she sits and heals while thinking of things she had planned to do.

Please pray for Stan and Bettany Simmons young son, Ollie, who is facing surgery today on a knee infection that has been hard to diagnose.  You can pray based on that limited information.  Tommy and Wanda Simmons can fill you in if you ask them.

David and I have been quarantined for six and a half weeks.  I never thought that would happen to us, but it has and it is not bad.  The future length of the quarantine for us is likely to be longer than for most of you, but we just take this one day at a time.  Join us in praying for all those who are fighting the Covid – 19 virus and all those who are caring for them.

Read the Bible in 2020 – April 25th

  • Judges 4:1-5:31
  • Luke 22:35-53
  • Psalm 94:1-23
  • Proverbs 14:3-4
  • If you get behind a little, just keep reading.  You can read extra and catch up, finish in over a year, or simple enjoy and learn from the parts you do read.  Either way, you will benefit from reading.
  • If you read and check-off the “yellow page” you received at church, you know you will be needing a new list at the end of next week.  Please check with “Miss” Janice at the church office for the next page next week.

Pray for the disaster relief teams working just north of us in McComb.  They are doing a good job of helping people get their homes and lives back after the rounds of tornados we have had recently.  If you know someone who is working, give them a special thanks.  If you are trained and available, contact LA Baptist Disaster Relief and volunteer.  If you would like to provide something to the teams, you can also call LA Baptist Disaster Relief.

Once again, the weekly services from FBC, Kentwood will not be open for you to attend.  However, you can join them via Facebook or YouTube.  Sunday services are at 10:30 and 6:00 with Wednesday’s service at 6 P.M.

  • Luke 22:14-34
  • Psalm 92:1-93:5
  • Proverbs 14:1-2

Two families to pray for today and in the coming days:

  • Elijah “Lige” Tate Travis, Jr.

December 14, 1962 – April 22, 2020

Elijah “Lige” Tate Travis Jr., 57, of Kentwood, LA went home to be with the Lord April 22, 2020 after an automobile accident. Lige was born to Elijah “Lige” and Marguerite Travis of Kentwood on December 14, 1962 and was surely overjoyed when he met them in heaven. Lige was a former dairy farmer and spent his career in refineries traveling worldwide for his trade as a member of Boilermakers Local 37. He was always a hard worker and looked up to on job sites where he formed many lifelong friendships. In his time off, you would find him spending time with his family, fishing, hunting, riding his Harley, or helping others with farm work. Lige is survived by his wife, Margaret Travis, his children Jessica and boyfriend Justin, Marshal and wife Tabetha, Aimee, Lige and their mother Tammy; stepdaughters Brittney Dayberry and husband Kurt, Jennifer Henderson and husband Keven, five grandchildren, Sarah Strickland, Levi Strickland, Kari Travis, Kain Travis, and Gracie Ballard; five step-grandchildren, Brooke, Kelsey, Ella Grace, Emmit, and Elliot;  a brother, Tommy Travis; and two sisters, Janet Alessi and Patsy Brumfield. The “roadrunner” is now running blue ticks and finding all the best fishing holes in paradise with his daughter, Gracie Travis; his mother and father, Lige and Marguerite Travis; a brother, Richard Travis; and nephews, Davy Travis and Barrett Black. Due to the covid-19 pandemic the family will have a drive through service at New Zion Baptist Church cemetery, Saturday, April 25 at 10:30 am. Participants are asked to write your names on cards to be dropped into a box or a card will be provided for you. You are asked to please remain in your vehicle. In lieu of flowers, buy a kid a fishing pole or take them hunting. Just an hour is precious time when your time is done. McKneely Funeral Home, Kentwood, in charge of arrangements. For an online guestbook, visit http://www.mckneelys.com.

  • Susan O’Brian Davis

November 11, 1966 – April 22, 2020

A resident of Amite, LA, passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at her home. She was born November 11, 1966 in Kentwood, LA and was 53 years of age. She is survived by daughter, Julie Lynn Davis; grandson, Landon Davis; father, Alvis O’Brian; sisters, Rhonda LaNata and husband, Henry, and Terri Rick and husband, Mitchell; brother, John O’Brian and wife, Darolyn; and many nieces and nephews that loved her and were loved dearly in return. Preceded in death by her husband, Edward “Jeff” Davis; daughter, Alicia Davis; mother, Patsy O’Brian; nephew, Mitchell Rick, Jr. Services will be held privately. McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, in charge of arrangements. For an online guestbook, visit http://www.mckneelys.com.

Three sets of tornados in 2 1/2 weeks!  It hurts to hear of the storms, see the pictures, and to get first-hand reports from friends of destruction.  Please pray for all families touched by the tornados.

I trust you are using these stay-at-home days to be productive.  It feels good, at the end of a day, to be able to think back over your accomplishments.  In addition to being productive, spend part of your day on resting, reflecting, and relaxing.

Monday

“We often suffer, but we are never crushed.

Even when we don’t know what to do, we never give up.

In times of trouble, God is with us, and when we are knocked down, we get up again . . . because we know that God raised the Lord Jesus back to life.

And just as God raised Jesus, he will also raise us to life.

Then he will bring us into his presence together.”

~2 Corinthians 4:8-9, 14 (CEV)~

Bro. Tom Higginbotham had three by-passes yesterday and is doing well now.  Thank-you for your continued prayers for him.

When I think of Bro. Tom, I think of missions.  He was a big promoter of everything to do with missions.  During the time he was the interim pastor at FBC, Kentwood, he guided the people in supporting missions in a bigger.

It’s time for the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for North American missions.  With all that is happening in our world now, I cannot think of a better time to support missions.

There is a 1.5% death rate with the Covid – 19 virus.  There is also a 98.5% recovery rate.  Let’s be thankful for the 98.5% and continue to strive to increase that number.

Yesterday’s church services from FBC, Kentwood were both very good.  If you missed them, you can find them on Facebook, Kentwood Baptist Church or on You-tube.  I have been amazed at all the online church services.  You can watch a couple a day for a week and many to choose from.  I think that is great!

When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up—the flames will not consume you.”

~Mark 16:15~

May God continue to open the eyes of Christians, letting them see the mission opportunities that abound at this time.  It is great how much Christian organizations are so beneficial in times such as this.  I love hearing and seeing their work on television and in ptint.

Yesterday, I found this song. but chose not to publish it.  Today, after finding this Scripture, I decided I needed to publish them at the same time.

Heal Our Land

If my people will humble themselves
Humble themselves and pray
If they seek my face and humble themselves
And turn from their wicked ways

I will hear from heaven and forgive their sins
I will hear from heaven and heal their land

Lord, heal our land
Father, heal our land
Hear our cry and turn our nation back to You
Lord, heal our land
Hear us oh, Lord, and heal our land
Forgive our sin and heal our broken land

Lord, we vow our knee, we humble ourselves
Humble ourselves and pray
Lord, we seek your face and humble ourselves
And turn from my wicked ways

Father in Your mercy, forgive our sins
Father in Your mercy, come heal our land

Lord, heal our land
Father, heal our land
Hear our cry and turn our nation back to You
Lord, heal our land
Hear us oh, Lord, and heal our land
Forgive our sin and heal our broken land

Lord, heal our land
Father, heal our land
Hear our cry and turn our nation back to You
Lord, heal our land
Hear us oh, Lord, and heal our land
Forgive our sin and heal our broken land

(Lord, heal our land
Father, heal our land)
Hear our cry and heal our broken land

The chorus was used as an anthem in the hymnal I was using.  I think we can benefit from using the chorus as a prayer.

He did something that no other friend could do.

No one ever cared for me like Jesus,
      There’s no other friend so kind as He;
No one else could take the sin and darkness from me,
O how much He cared for me.

All my life was full of sin when Jesus found me,
      All my heart was full of misery and woe;
Jesus placed His strong and loving arms about me,
And He led me in the way I ought to go.

No one ever cared for me like Jesus,
      There’s no other friend so kind as He;
No one else could take the sin and darkness from me,
O how much He cared for me.

Ev’ry day He comes to me with new assurance,
      More and more I understand His words of love;
But I’ll never know just why He came to save me,
Till some day I see His blessed face above.

No one ever cared for me like Jesus,
      There’s no other friend so kind as He;
No one else could take the sin and darkness from me,
O how much He cared for me.

Henry McKenzie has a brother, Marion, who is hospitalized in Hattisburg,  Pray for him and his family,

Dennis Price has been in North Oaks and will get a defibrillator today.  Pray this is helpful to Dennis’ health.

Today is the day we were to leave home to travel to our grandson’s military graduation from the Air Force boot camp.  Needless to say, none of the families will be represented.  Graduation will be a hard day for the graduates and their families.  Let’s not focus on ourselves, but on others today.

Today, we can use prayer as a weapon in helping ourselves and others through this virus experience,  Set your clocks to remind you to pray each hour.  Choose one of the requests listed below to be your focus for that hour.  The next hour, choose another one.  Pray.  Take your mind off yourself as you pray for others.  If you have your television on, you can use the commercials as signals to pray.  Find a method to pray regularly throughout this day.

Focus on the needs of others.

  • Pray for the young people like those in this group as they move on to the next step.
  • Pray for students who won’t graduate in May as planned.
  • Pray for couples who postponed weddings.
  • Pray for families who had a death and cannot receive the normal support from others.
  • Pray for students who were not able to get home during this time.
  • Pray for sick people who have no loved ones to sit with them.
  • Pray for people who live alone and who have not heard from anyone in a long time.
  • Pray for people who are sick and unsure about going to the doctor/hospital.
  • Pray for healthcare workers who go in for another day at their worksite.
  • Pray for pastors as they attempt to minister to their “flock” in creative ways.
  • Pray for churches to be a “shining light” in their communities.
  • Pray for grandparents and grandchildren who cannot see each other.
  • Pray for parents who are healthcare workers and who have seen the need to pass their children on to another relative for this time period.
  • Pray for teens and young adults who do not realize the seriousness of the situation.
  • Pray for new parents who are entrusted by God with a baby at this time.
  • Pray for low-wage workers who are called in to work without protective gear.
  • Pray for healthcare workers who have to go into homes where the virus is thriving.
  • Pray for those who do not have adequate food at this time.
  • Pray for those who have spend their money on other things, not necessities.
  • ETC.

Remember to pray regularly today!

do not give in to sinful desires . . .

Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life.

So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.”

So far, most people have remained healthy.  Continue to ““play it safe” and STAY HOME.  Some people seem to be disobeying the orders to do that.  I’m afraid they will be among the sick in a week.  Use the pick-up services available in multiple locations.  Do not allow anyone inside your house, except the home health nurse!  Keep children away from their grandparents, etc.  because they are often carriers of the coronavirus.  Today, this Lord’s Day, more churches will be live-streaming their services.  Be sure to look at two or three.  If you do go out, make it a trip around the community to pray for people as you ride by their homes.  Stay in your car.  Don’t stop anywhere!  Use your phone to check on people.  If you deliver something to a home, leave it on the porch and knock and call.  Then, quickly leave.

Today, the Operation Christmas Child team was scheduled to visit Sunday School classrooms to take suggestions for April purchases.   You will have to be creative to make these purchases without going shopping in person, but I know you can do this.  Happy April Shopping!  Two new rules:

  1. Don’t enter any stores to purchase these.  Use your phone or internet.
  2. Have the items delivered to the church.  They can sit at the church and and be waiting for when this isolation period is over.

I watched four church services yesterday.  Jason’s church suggested having children make “Loving One Another Cards”.  I think this would be wonderful for adults too.  Once your cards are made, they can be left in the mailbox for the mail carrier or dropped in the outdside box at the post office.  Even when housebound, do your part to minister to others.

Here’s my song list for today.  I hope you sing along.
