Lawrence Costa Phillips

August 02, 1922 – December 28, 2017

Lawrence Costa Phillips, son of James Blaine Phillips & Annie Jay Lindsey Phillips, was born August 2, 1922, in Pine Ridge, St. Helena Parish, LA, and passed on Thursday, December 28, 2017 in Dennis Mills, LA after 95 memorable years. He married Julia Virgina Calmes of Dennis Mills on March 7, 1948 after completing 4 years of service in the US Navy in WWII. Lawrence had both BS and MS degrees in agriculture from LSU and worked as a vocational agriculture teacher from Pine Grove High School for 30 years. Predeceased by parents, wife, son, Gregory L. Phillips, and siblings, Cordelia, Flynn, James, Clyde, Lois, Dean. Survived by two sons, Chaney Phillips and wife, Marty of Ponchatoula, Matthew Phillips and wife, Christine of Watson, six grandsons, Gregory Phillips and wife, Jennifer of Metairie, Ryan Phillips and wife, Stephanie of Baton Rouge, Jason Phillips and wife, Kristi of Baton Rouge, Dallas Phillips and wife, Tammy of Denham Springs, Jackson Phillips of New Jersey, Ethan Phillips of Watson, one granddaughter, Brandy Roberts and husband, John of Denham Springs, eight great-grandchildren, Chaney, Grayson and Lindsey Phillips of Metairie, Jacob and Jordan Phillips of Baton Rouge, Brenna and Blaine Phillips of Baton Rouge, Brandon Phillips of Denham Springs, numerous nieces and nephews, and hundreds of friends and extended family. Tyler Smith, son of George and Becky Arnold Smith, had a freak accident in Colorado in which he broke in collarbone in several places. He will be having surgery at the children’s hospital in New Orleans today. Please pray for Tyler as he undergoes surgery and during the recovery process.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt who was loved by her family passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at St. Helena Parish Hospital in Greensburg, LA at the age of 84. She was born April 22, 1933 in Zachary, LA and was a resident of Greensburg. Robert Wesley Crain

January 10, 1949 – December 27, 2017

And a resident of Franklinton died Wednesday morning December 27, 2017. He was a Franklinton High School graduate of 1967 and later graduated from Louisiana State University in 1975. Robert was a big supporter of FHS athletics, as well as all area schools, civic groups, churches and community projects. He enjoyed tailgating for LSU Tigers football games and watching their sporting events on TV. Robert always loved riding his tractor while working on his farm, spending time on the Bogue Chitto River and relaxing at his camp. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Franklinton.

As a young man, Robert decided that caring for the needs of others would be his calling in life as he began working in funeral service at the age of 16. He graduated from Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service in 1969 and began a short journey that brought his new family back to the community he cared so much for. Robert has been the owner of Crain Funeral Home since 1979 and felt it was his duty to provide comfort to the thousands of grieving families he encountered through his 52 years of service. He always felt it was a ministry to the great families of Washington Parish to show compassion to those that needed his support.

Robert had a kind heart and received his greatest joy by providing for others. Either through the monetary gifts that allowed young people to play the games they loved, sponsorship of the countless events that lifted our community spirit, assistance to any local church that helped them fulfill the needs of its congregation or simply spending quality time with his beloved family and grandchildren. He will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all those that knew him.

Visitation will be at Crain Funeral Home Friday December 29th from 5 pm until 9 pm and after 10 am on Saturday. A funeral service will be held at 2 pm Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Paul Watts and Rev. Leon Hickman officiating. Burial will follow in Ellis Cemetery.

Joan Marie Irwin “Meme” Newman, 73, of Kentwood, passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Joan Marie was born in Victoria, TX on September 25, 1944. She attended Texas City High School. She married Al Newman on August 30, 1963. Joan and Al owned and managed Kentwood Raceway as well as Newman Blueberry Farm for many years. She was also a clerical worker for Pike Hospital and a dietician at Kentwood Manor Nursing Home. She’s a member of Taylor Creek Baptist Church. She always had a creative mind and her passions included her grandkids, painting, photography, sewing, crafting, gardening, etc. She LOVED the outdoors. Joan is preceded in death by her mother, June Mangum Feagin “Texas Nanny”; father, Tull Hays Irwin; sister, Betty Irwin Dykes, and niece, Debra Ann Williams. David and I were blessed to have the Third Thursday Gathering at the Cabin last night. Despite the many seasonal conflicts, people from five different churches were present. Mr. Harlon Toney guided the singing of numerous Christmas carols. Kim Toney Chadwick sang two beautiful songs about Mary. We will meet again on Thursday, Jan 18th.

Sunday, FBC, Kentwood will follow the regular morning schedule, 9: 15 for Sunday School and 10:30 for worship. Sunday evening there will be a candlelight service at 6 P.M. If you are available, come worship in Kentwood.

Mrs. Juanita Pritchett is improving following her back surgery. Pray for her and her two caregiver sons, Chester and John.

Philip Strickland’s surgery went well at Ochsner (NO) yesterday. Pray for him to have a good recovery period.

David’s brother, Jimmy Alford, had a procedure at Ochsner (BR) that will hopefully lead to the next step in Jimmy’s treatment. There is a more hopeful attitude in his situation now.

Reginald E. (Reggie) Goldsby, MD

August 09, 1943 – December 18, 2017

Long time Amite Mayor and beloved family physician, Reginald (Reggie) Goldsby, age 74, passed from this life on Monday, December 18, 2017. He was born August 9, 1943 in Amite to Omar and Mamie Roberts Goldsby who preceded him in death as did his brother, Myles Goldsby. He is survived by his daughter, Laken Goldsby, and many Goldsby and Kennedy cousins whom he loved dearly and who loved him. He was a faithful charter member of the First Southern Methodist Church of Amite. As an honors student of LSU Medical School, he was exempt from a semester’s final exams. Later in his career, he became an LSU Clinical Professor. He was an avid LSU football fan and not only played football for Amite High School but remained a loyal fan. I checked on the location of the shoeboxes sent out through our church as part of Operation Christmas Child. So far, I was able to track boxes to both Mexico and Ecuador. I’m excited the boxes are in their country of destination already. I hope you are still as excited as I am for the boxes and what an impact each box will make on the lives of children and their families.

Some of these shoeboxes will be delivered by our international missionaries. Our gifts to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions help keep them “on the field”. That means our shoebox gifts might be a part of the ministry we provide through the LMCO. We help get the boxes to the children by collecting items, packing boxes, paying postage, and supporting our missionaries. Thank-you for all your help.

Tomorrow night, we will gather at the cabin at 6:30 for our monthly Third Thursday meeting. I can hardly wait to share this sweet time with others.

Several people, whom I will not name, have had surgeries or procedures in the last week. Pray for them as a group unless you know the individual situations.

The “Young” Ladies’ Birthday Party will be at 11 A.M. tomorrow at The Cafe.

Third Thursday at the Cabin – We will meet this week at 6:30. Come join us.

Contributions to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering are being accepted at all Southern Baptist Churches.

The Friday Morning Bible Study will not meet this week, but plans to meet the following week.

Christmas is a wonderful time to help meet needs.

This morning at 8 A.M., you can begin your day by attending the breakfast buffet at Pine Ridge United Methodist Church. Better than the wonderful breakfast is knowing your donation goes to a worthy need in this general area. The ladies do a great job in providing the breakfast and in selecting the person/cause to give the funds to.

Many area churches will be having Christmas programs of some sort either this morning or this afternoon. FBC, Kentwood will be celebrating with the music of the children and the adults tonight at 6P.M.

FBC, Kentwood will have their missions march for the Lottie Moon Offering this morning. This is an opportunity to give and to make a visual statement of your support for missions by walking with those who are giving. Of course, this is not your only opportunity to give to the offering. You can give at any time. I think it is great to know 100% of our money given goes directly to support missionaries and their work around the world.

I’ve been told that many people are having Christmas gathering/meals today. No matter when you gather, remember the reason is to celebrate the day long ago when Jesus was born on this earth as a little baby. My, the plans His Father had for Him!
