Thursday

“A word aptly spoken

is like apples of gold in setting of silver.”

~Proverbs 25:11~

Today, let’s pray for categories of people.

  • Those who do not know Jesus as their Savior.
  • Those who are hungry or lacking housing and other basic needs.
  • Those who have difficult family or work relationships.
  • Those who are lonely (sometimes even though there are many people around them).
  • Those who have major decisions and lack the knowledge or judgment to make good decision.
  • Those whose lives seem to be a series of poor choices.
  • Those who live in the past or present, but cannot relate to both.
  • Those who are hurting, seemingly without relief.
  • Those who are homebound.
  • Those who do not have relationships/conversations with other people all day.
  • Those who have sent a loved one away to college, a job, etc.
  • Those who are family caregivers.
  • Other situations as they come to your mind….

God love each of these people.  He has placed us here on earth to fill in for Him to minister to these people.  Let’s find ways, daily, to help others.

Operation Christmas Child

  • Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have relieved me in my distress; Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer. – Psalm 4:1 (NKJV)
  • “This is the beginning of our “sort”, just getting things in the appropriate aged boxes, next step to actually pack them so all the goodies fit inside nicely! There are 35 here and we probably have enough stuff to do a lot more. Feeling blessed to be able to share these with kids all over the world!” – Kari B.
  • Sophia, the daughter of a Pastor in Belize, received a shoebox gift in her church 5 years ago. Sophia was then a young teenager and was excited to be receiving a gift. Sophia saw her parents organize the event and saw the impact on the children. She became more involved in her church eventually helping to lead the youth ministry. This year when OCC came back to her community, she was the main coordinator for the event in her church and also encouraged and assisted her parents to mobilize other churches in the community to participate in the program. She is now actively involved in community activities and is doing her degree at the local university so that she can bring change to her community.
  • After his life is spared, a boy comes to faith in Christ when he receives a shoebox gift from Operation Christmas Child.
  • If you like to include a picture in your shoebox gift, … (a) DIY frame would be a fun addition! Encouragement, comfort, and support go a long way in helping people get through the difficult days of their lives.
  • “Super proud of our family’s “stash” for Operation Christmas Child!
We have everything from school supplies, toys, clothes, and hygiene products! We set a goal to fill twice as many boxes as last year and I’m pretty sure we’ll end up packing more than that!” – Dora L.

Frozen Food for the First of the Month

If you have not put up some frozen food to share this month, it’s not too late.  You can also send small packs of vegetables/fruit you froze when the food was harvested.  Another option is to purchase suitable frozen food. Think about different food groups,  What would you want to eat?  Some other ideas would be breakfast foods, desserts, and cooked meat.  Be sure to package or purchase small quantities.  There will be only two people in each of the families we are sharing with this month.

Bring your food to my Sunday School classroom before class this week.  The food will be delivered Sunday.

Thank-you to those who have shared.  You certainly have been a blessing to those who cannot or no longer could prepare good meals for their themselves and their loved ones.

Hope Center
First, let me say I’m so thankful for volunteers who have signed up to help.  There were four more from my church today.  I know they will be blessed each day they volunteer.  Our volunteer list is up to fifty, but that we will need and be thankful for more volunteers as new services are added.  Next week, that will be the food delivery to people who qualify.
Today, applications will again be taken for our first food delivery.  Applications will be taken at Home Center in Roseland from 1:00 – 5:00.  It is a simple process.
The first delivery of food to the center will be some time Monday.  Volunteers will be needed Tuesday – Thursday to organize the food and to pack the boxes.  Other volunteers will be needed to assist in the delivery of food on Friday.  Let me know if you can be one of these volunteers or call 247-2235 and leave your name and day/time with them.
God blesses!  That’s a guarantee!
If you have volunteered, let me compliment you on the way you talked and worked with those who came into Hope Center.  You have each displayed a tender, Christian heart of service.  Others have been blessed each and every day!
I need to share something else that touches my heart every day.  There is a large magazine rack of Bibles and other Christian literature that is free to anyone who chooses to make some selections.  I have seen this happen each and every day I was there.  I always had it provided by my family and my church, but that is not true for some people.  That’s another ministry of Hope Center .

Sunday, the first one of the month, is the day to bring frozen food to my Sunday School classroom.  It will be distributed to families Sunday.  Thanks so much for your support.  You touch lives by doing this.  If you have some vegetables you put in the freezer this year and are willing to share them, please know they will be going to someone who has a special need/request.  The other cooked and frozen foods will be shared as usual.God bless your generosity!

Hope Center signed up twenty-two families the very first day!  They will receive food on the 10th.  Tomorrow, Thursday, applications will be taken from 1-5 P.M.  Come shop and/or volunteer with us!  Contact me or the Hope Center (247-2235) to be put on the schedule.  Food will be arriving Wednesday for distribution on Friday.  We will need special help boxing the food next week.  I post more about that next week.

Saturday

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.

Mr. Bobbie Lawson is home from North Oaks.   I’m sure he is thankful to be back in Kentwood.

Operation Christmas Child

  • In a country searching for salvation, OCC shares the hope and love of Jesus Christ through shoebox gifts!
  • In 2006, OCC delivered over 568,000 shoebox gifts to children in the Ukraine! — with Maria Sullivan Galyta.
  • “Two of my great grandchildren ages 4 and 7 and I do this each year. They love shopping for the boxes to send to other children. It does my heart good to hear them say it’s for kids who need a Christmas present. It’s something I love doing with them.” – Pat J.
  • My mother is 86 and she has been sewing bags for our shoeboxes for the last few years. She also has been sewing the little tic tac toe games. She does quilting and uses the scraps. It gives her something to do and it is a blessing for our church.” – Karen C.

You can make tic tac toe boards for your shoebox gifts too! Check out the instructions here: http://bit.ly/OCCtictactoe

  • “What an honor to work with these students from McDowell Early College as they partnered with Operation Christmas Child to make over 100 bracelets, 50 cards of encouragement and 100 notepads for shoebox gifts this year. One student shared ‘It is such a blessing to send encouragement to others!’” – Nicole S.
  • It’s time to answer another frequently asked question! Today’s question – where do the boxes go?

OCC delivers shoebox gifts to over 100 countries, which vary from year to year. You can Follow Your Box and learn the country it is delivered to by making your $7 shipping donation online: http://bit.ly/FollowYourBox1

  • The boxes are collected during National Collection Week, which is Nov.17-24 this year. A zip code locator will be available on our website after Oct. 1, so you can find your nearest drop-off location. During National Collection Week, more than 4,000 local drop-off sites will open, so there should be one near you. http://www.samaritanspurse.org/operat…/drop-off-locations/
  • In Chad, the children and their families are thankful for the ministry of OCC there. “We have gotten many things we need for our school year (pen, notebooks, pencils, clothes and so on). We pray that God, the Almighty, blesses all those who remembered us this year” they declared.

From Rev. Franklin Graham

Join Rev. Franklin Graham, Naghmeh Abedini, and many others as they pray for Pastor Saeed Avedini tonight at 5:00 tonight.  Pastor Saeed has been imprisoned for two years because of his Christian faith.  Now, the danger has increased as fellow prisoners, ISIS militants, are threatening his life.

“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace,                                                           that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need”                                                                                                                                  ~Hebrews 4:16, NKJV~

Bobbie Lawson continues to be at North Oaks where he has been undergoing tests.  Please keep him in your prayers.

Jean Easley is home, but Joe is in ICU at North Oaks again.  Keep praying for this couple.

Maxine Turner and Frances Strickland are in room 602 at Landmark Nursing Home.  I’m sure they would appreciate you writing or visiting them.

James Allen has been unable to attend church lately.  I’m sure he would appreciate a card, a visit, or a call.

Continue to pray for Jimmy Schwartz.  Some of his days are better than others.

As you continue to pray for Robbie Lynn, please be sure to pray for her parents, Robert and Linda Callihan.

Continue to pray for the families who have lost some of their loved ones lately.

Also, pray for families of those who have not yet decided to follow Jesus.

Pray that Christians will be focused on telling about Jesus and doing something to help others both physically and spiritually.

Operation Christmas Child

  • “For a long time we wanted to start a Sunday school ministry in our church but somehow just couldn’t get around getting started. Samaritan’s Purse has made that possible with the OCC shoeboxes distribution and the TGJ discipleship courses in the church. Today we have a Sunday school of forty-five and they are consistent in their attendance. Thirty of those children are involved in The Greatest Journey course. We have recently started Sunday night meetings with the parents of many of those children. There has been a refreshing in the assembly after gift distribution. Thanks to Samaritan’s Purse and glory to God.” – Pastor Bholaram, Guyana
  • “I wanted to share this awesome story with you all. One of our Connect team members received a call from Boone last year asking him to help a local woman with her boxes. It was July of last year and Todd showed up at Maria’s house to help her by picking up the shoeboxes she had already packed. Her apartment AND her friend’s apartment were overflowing. Maria came here from Brazil as a child. She first started filling shoeboxes about 7 years ago after visiting Brazil. She went to a school while there and was devastated by what she saw. A little boy was so excited to have a NEW pencil. She watched the teacher take the pencil and break it into lots of pieces for the other kids to share. She was so affected by this that she came home and started packing. She packs over a box a day and does each box individually. Last year she packed over 600 boxes and Todd has already picked up over 300 for this year. Oh, did I mention she is in her late 70’s? This is one inspirational lady!!” – Stephanie S.
  • “I received a box this year and I was so excited because it was my first time. I was happy because when I opened it there were things inside that were not just for me, there were some that I could share with my nephew. I just hope that you all will put pictures, letters or address so that somehow, we can say thank you to you.” – Shannon C., shoebox recipient
  • “Can You Make a Box for Me?” –  http://kidzmatter.com/can-you-make-a-box-for-me/
  • Do you include letters in your shoebox gift?  One more shoebox, one more gospel opportunity!

  • At FBC, Kentwood, we are progressing on collecting items for our boxes.
  • We will have our second and last craft day Saturday at 1:00 P.M.  Join us!
  • November 1st is the date for our packing party.  Everyone is invited to a Christmas party during which time we will fill the shoeboxes for shipment.
  • What a blessing this has been to me!  What a blessing this will be to many little children!  We can all be a part of “growing the Kingdom”!

Hope Center

  • It is so rewarding to be a part of this ministry.  I wish I could be there every minute the doors are open!  It will only get better!
  • We still need household items, furniture, appliances, food donations, and people to work!
  • Call and volunteer.
  • Drop in and see the progress!

Georgia Barnett Offering for Louisiana Missions

(from the website –http://georgiabarnette.org/)

  • Each year, the Georgia Barnette State Mission Offering draws attention to God’s work being carried out across Louisiana. Your church has the opportunity to join God in His work, but now is the time to start preparing your leadership and membership for this incredible challenge.

In recent years, superhero movies have been incredibly popular. Every manner of super-powered crime fighter has been battling bad guys on big screens across the country—and there’s no end in sight.

But when you really sit back and look at what defines a superhero, one quality sticks out above the rest: the willingness to do something. After all, the ability to fly or climb walls or outsmart criminals really means nothing if the one given those gifts decides to stay home and watch TV instead of hitting the streets and making a difference in the world.

  • This year’s goal is $1,945,000, and we need your help to make that goal a reality. As always, the funds raised in the Georgia Barnette Offering will go toward assisting missionaries around Louisiana in sharing the good news of Jesus through spoken words and loving actions. It will help them be devoted to “doing good” by being Jesus’ hands and feet in a world that needs to know Him.  (Each church sets it own goal every year.)
  • “Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good …                                                                                                                       ~Titus 3:14~

  • “Repeat Warnings” http://odb.org/

Scriptures about Discouragement

  • Psalm 34:17-19 When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.

  • 1 Peter 1:6-9 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

because I am gentle and humble in heart,

and you will find rest for yourselves.

For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Monday

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel,

for it is the power of God for salvation

to everyone who believes,

to the Jew first and also to the Greek.”

~Romans 1:16, NASB~

Please continue to pray for the family of Ray and Beverly Blackwell.  I’m sure it is much more difficult to have two patients than to have only one.  Pray for the health of these two and strength and knowledge for those making decisions and helping care for them.

Connor Corkern is having a difficult time, but hoping to get better without going into the hospital.  Pray for him and for his family as they continue the battle.

Please continue to pray for Mike Hurst as he battles cancer.  Pray for the family with him and the family many miles away.

Mrs. Norma Varnado passed away last night.  The last months have been difficult for her and her family, but she is at peace now.

Operation Christmas Child

  • Thirteen million shoeboxes have been distributed since OCC began.  That many boxes placed end-to-end would circle the world 855 times!
  • When Hannah Bell met Yuri Lopez, who received a shoebox in a Honduran orphanage, at an OCC event in Scottsdale, AZ last year, she was inspired to collect shoeboxes herself. She set a goal of 100 shoeboxes, which she met by reaching out to her church’s youth group, a local preschool, her dad’s co-workers, and out of state friends. Eight year old Hannah collected 116 shoeboxes and donations to support the cost of shipping. “I learned that helping children can make a difference in the world…helping is the big picture in my heart!” –Hannah Bell, Scottsdale, Arizona
  • Working with Operation Christmas Child is a true blessing.  Every box is a gospel opportunity and will change a life forever!  -Sharra K., OCC supporter
  • “My name is Uma from Nepal. I am 13 years old and I’m in 9th grade. I have 7 siblings and it’s very difficult to attend school regularly because we cannot get enough school supplies. I was so excited to see school supplies in the gift box. I did not have any to go to school, but Operation Christmas Child provided me with them. I am so happy to get these. Now I can be regular in my school!”

Week of Prayer for Georgia Barnett Offering for State Missions Sept. 14 -21

“Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good.” Titus 3:14

The WMU of Two Rivers Association will celebrate this week at FBC, Kentwood at 10:00 this morning with Sylvester Humphrey, volunteer coordinator of the new Hope Center, as our speaker.  Hope will open at 9:00 in the morning in Roseland with a thrift store and a Second Harvest Food Bank.  Applications for the food can be completed beginning in the morning. The dates of food distribution are not schedule yet, but I will keep you update.

Today, final preparations of the building are being made.  Later, volunteers will be needed to work each day.  Hope Center will be open Tuesday – Friday, 9:00 – 5:00.  What a blessing Hope Center will be to people of our area!  What is blessing each volunteer will receive!

You may ask how Hope Center and the Georgia Barnett Offering are related.  Some of the start-up funds have been provided through our state missions office.  Additional funding will be provided by the churches of Two Rivers Association and by individuals.

Third Thursday – We will be meeting Thursday at the cabin at 6:30.  Join us for a wonderful evening of food, fellowship, devotional, prayer, and music.

so that we can share that same comfort

with others in trouble.

We share in the terrible sufferings of Christ,

but also in the wonderful comfort he gives.”
