World Down Syndrome Day 2020 & Josiah Huckaby

Not how we planned to spend it. We didn’t get to wear our cute shirts or crazy socks but we did have fun. Although we sure are missing daddy! I’m just glad technology allows us the opportunity to see each other during hospital stays.

Josiah has definitely been making improvements on his oxygen. They did quite a bit of weaning today. Hopefully he will continue to do well on the new oxygen settings tonight.

Joey “Buck” Cutrer

November 03, 1957 – March 20, 2020

A resident of Livingston, LA, passed away on Friday, March 20, 2020 at his home. He was born November 3, 1957 in Clinton, LA and was 62 years of age. He was a loving father and grandfather that would do anything for anyone. He was a kind hearted soul that is now at peace. He is survived by 2 sons, Joey Cutrer and Drew Alan Cutrer and wife, Lauren; granddaughter, Ava Cutrer; brother, Ric Cutrer and wife, Donna; sister, MaryJo Cutrer; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Carly Lou Cutrer; and parents, Joe and Mary Lou Cutrer. Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, the funeral and viewing will be private. Saint Elmo Saxon, Jr.

February 22, 1943 – March 20, 2020

A resident of Kentwood, LA, passed away on Friday, March 20, 2020 at home surrounded by his family. He was born February 22, 1943 in Foxworth, MS and was 77 years of age. He was a husband, father, brother and friend who was better known as Daddy, Honey, Elmo or simply “Saint.” He was a man of many talents, loved the outdoors and was an American patriot having served in the U. S. Army. His world was his family showing his love every day with his abounding love. He traveled throughout the world, many times alone, sometimes with his love and family,  bringing back many stories and souvenirs from the trips. Being a man that loved to work, he taught his work ethic to anyone who would loan him a hand, follow him around, learning with every step. If you were lucky enough to attend a Saxon gathering where family and friends were, you caught him in his glory. He is survived by his wife, Kay Crawford Saxon; 3 daughters, Milissa Pirnar, Tissie Gorman, and  Angela Saxon; son, Chris Saxon and his wife, Brigitte Saxon; grandchildren, Brugge Gorman, Dillon Gorman, Skylar Pirnar, Noah Steptore, Domonique Pierce, Anna Barber, Stone Saxon, and River Saxon; great-grandchildren, Abygayle, Anslee and Aniston Rae Barber; 2 sisters, Linda Russell and Mary Johnson; brother, John Wayne Saxon. Preceded in death by parents, Saint Elmo Saxon, Sr. and Johnnie Mae Forbes Saxon; son, Brian O’Neal Saxon; daughter, Tina Marie Saxon; and brother, Linnie Saxon. Most of us will be at home today and watching our church service via live-streaming video.  Many will not have the opportunity to attend a Sunday School class.  There are several option:

  • Each person prepares their lesson and discusses it.
  • One person teaches the family each week.
  • Watch a video and discuss it as a family group.

Bible project will be giving us a video to watch as a family each week.  Then, discussion can follow.  The lesson for today is “Generosity”.

Churches present the worship service online.

  • Most churches will present the worship service online, many of them doing so for the first time today.
  • If your church is not live-streaming this morning or if you choose to watch multiple services as we did last week. you will have plenty of opportunities.  On Facebook, join Kentwood First Baptist Church at 10:30 A.M., 6 P.M. today, and 6 P.M. Wednesday.  I think following the normal schedule will keep us from feeling like we are missing out as much.

 

 

 

Now that hospitals are not allowing any visitors like the special living facilities, we need to pray extra hard for both the patients/residents and the family members.  What a change this is!

 

 

David and I haven’t been out in days.  He makes a lot of calls to check on people.  If you have a name for me to add to The Prayer Link, please send me a  message like Danielle Thornton did yesterday.  I will be glad to add your prayer concerns.

Josiah Huckaby

  • 19th -And in the blink of an eye…we are back in the hospital!

    We went for an appointment in Memphis today & he started having some respiratory trouble. They went ahead & sent us home from clinic but told us to come back to the ER if he got worse. Half way home he got really flushed looking & was having more trouble. We checked his temp & it was 104.6 so we turned around & came back to the ER. I always have Tylenol with us so we gave that & by the time we got back to Memphis his temp was down to 101.9 and was at 100.5 about 2 hours ago. So far his X-ray shows pneumonia in his left lung, they have started antibiotics, & they are running some tests to determine if he has a bacterial or viral infection. We are still in the ER but hopefully we will be in a room soon.

  • 20th -Update: We have had several people asking if Josiah was tested for COVID-19. Due to the new hospital protocols for admission to the PICU, he did fall under the guidelines for testing. His test came back negative this afternoon. Praise the Lord! His FLU/RSV tests came back negative, as well as the respiratory viral panel they ran. They also swapped him to a hospital vent last night for 2 purposes: due to the new protocols in place & so they could better control adjusting his settings throughout the night. They were able to put him back on his home vent this evening. He’s still requiring a lot of oxygen but they have been able to keep all his other settings at our home levels. He also hasn’t had a fever since last night.

This morning I saw photos of the Samaritan’s Purse portable hospital I told you about.  It reminded me of the good work some organizations do.  Feel free to support them.

 

 

 

I told you about singing The Doxology while washing your hands to make sure you are washing long enough.

This morning, in making a comment to a FB friend, I used the phrase, “in times like this”.  That led me to my second song for today – “In Times Like This”.

Today is day ten of our quarantine which was imposed by our children.  I see many more ahead.  We certainly have wise children who look out for us.  I’m glad I have several Operation Christmas Child crafts I can work on at this time.

Keith Newell is able to move around some following his Tuesday surgerty.  His nurse wife has been an asset to his recovery.  She was sent home from the hospital last night.  It is doubtful she will be allowed back in today.

 

 

 

Joseph Anthony Liuzza

July 22, 1943 – March 18, 2020

Joseph Anthony (Joe Joe) Liuzza, born in Amite, LA on July 22, 1943, passed away peacefully at age 76 on March 18, 2020 at North Oaks Regional Medical Center in Hammond, LA.

Joe was a successful sales person and entrepreneur throughout his life. From owning and operating a campground and recreation park, to bars, restaurants and many other business ventures, he always poured his heart into his endeavors. Friends and family would tell you that Joe was “real”. Ask him what he thought about a subject and he would tell you…. like it or not!

Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Steve Paul Liuzza and Catherine Rispone Liuzza.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years and caregiver for many more, Elaine Swinney Liuzza; children, Chris Liuzza and wife, Connie, David V. Liuzza and wife, Stacey, Melissa Liuzza McCallister and husband, Luther, Cathy Liuzza McCallister and husband, Roland; Grandchildren, Lindsey, Steven, Carolyn, Jake, Cristian and Brecca; brothers, Jack V. Liuzza and wife, Fay and Steve P. Liuzza; nephew Anthony V. Liuzza.

Joe’s wishes of no funeral or memorial services has been honored by his family. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date at his home in Amite for the immediate family.

PAULETTE “POLLY” STEVENS DIBENEDETTO

Paulette “Polly” Stevens DiBenedetto, a resident of Amite, LA, passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2020 at the Post Acute Medical Specialty Hospital of Hammond surrounded by her family. She was born December 9, 1959 in Amite and was 60 years of age. She retired from Hood Automotive in Amite. She was married to the love of her life for 35 years and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend to all. She is survived by her husband, Anthony G. DiBenedetto; 2 sons, Dustin A. DiBenedetto and Brody S. DiBenedetto; 1 grandson, Jude E. DiBenedetto; sister, Linda S. Cutrer and fiancé, Chester Pritchett; brother, J.D. Stevens and wife, Toni S. Stevens; and nephews, Bruce “Binky” E. Cutrer, II, Jerod R. Stevens, and Jace D. Stevens; niece, Keeli L. Cutrer; and great-niece, Laney R. Stevens. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jimmie L. “Rip” Stevens and Mary Nicosia Stevens. Due to the extenuating circumstances caused by the Coronavirus Pandemic, the services will be limited to immediate family members only. Interment will be in Amite Memorial Gardens, Amite.

 

 

 

Church will be livestreamed only!  We will not be attending services at FBC, Kentwood for a while, but all services will be available on the Kentwood, First Baptist Church FB page.   You can watch services in real time or any time you choose.

I’m thankful my church has been doing this for a while and has worked through some of the problems that arose. 

We will not have Sunday School at this time, but you certainly can use your present book and study on your own.

 

 

 

I have a thought.  Each day choose one word (faith, peace. love, hope, compassion, etc.) each day.  Look that word up in your Bible, phone, computer, etc.  Make an entry in a notebook information you gain and how that word applies to you at this time.

We are in this together.  Don’t forget to check on others via phone or computer.  Person visits are not good at this time.

Our friends have successfully complete their period of confinement because of the virus.  I thank God they are ready to move back to their regular home and life.

 

 

 

The Robertsons have returned home from Ochsner in NO where Laura Lee Robertson had surgery.  Thank God for her improvement.  Pray for her as she continues her recovery at home.

 

 

 

Felicia McKee Taylor

August 13, 1940 – March 17, 2020

Mrs. Felicia McKee Taylor, 79, of Hammond, LA, passed from this life on March 17, 2020 at her home in Hammond, surrounded by her daughter, son-in-law and caregiver.

Mrs. Felicia was born August 13, 1940 in Progress, MS to the late Russell M and Jesse S. McKee. She was the baby of nine children. She was a graduate of Progress High School where she excelled in basketball. After graduation, she moved to “the city” of McComb to attend Beauty School. While working to help put herself through school, she met and married Pete. She made a career of being a Beautician for 55 years and proudly let you know that she loved what she did and that her customers were like her family.

She enjoyed her church family also. She was an active member of North McComb Baptist Church for many years until her health declined and she moved to Hammond to live with her children. She enjoyed gospel singing, yard selling, bingo, playing cards, swapping recipes, cooking and was an outstanding baker. She was known for her pound cake and desserts. She loved doing for others, helping people without question because she strongly believed that was what Christians do. She never wanted praise for her act of kindness.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 54 years, Wilton E. “Pete” Taylor; two brothers, Russell Jr. and Bobby McKee; five sisters, Beatrice Vermillion, Daisy LeGlue, Doris Stinson, Annie Margaret McKee and Helen Ray McKee and one son-in-law, Gregory B. Harris.

She is survived by her daughter, Angie Blades and husband, Mike of Hammond, LA, whom she had lived with the past 3 years; one sister, Dorothy Bates of McComb, MS and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends and two special four legged babies, Pebbles and BamBam.

Pallbearers will be Lionel Estay, Gabriel Estay, Gavin Estay and Henry LeGlue.

Felicia chose these special honorary pallbearers, Barry Boyd, Johnny Graves, Sandy Buie, Derrick Anderson and Philip Holmes. She had a special bond with each of them.

Visitation will be Saturday, March 21, 2020 at 10:30AM until time of service at 12PM at Sharkey Funeral Home in Summit, MS with Dr. David Millican officiating. Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Sherry Jones for her time, love and support in the past few weeks.

Obituary for Dr. Gwendolyn “Gwen” Hastings Autin

Gwen, age 63, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 15, 2020. She was a native of Amite, LA and a resident of Tickfaw, LA. Gwen was an avid member of Natalbany Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Hammond. She loved to play the piano and organ and did so for many years at her church. Gwen earned a PhD in math and dedicated over 42 years to education. She taught at Oak Forest Academy, Albany High School, and Southeastern Louisiana University, where she worked in the Math Department as well as the Department of Teaching and Learning. Gwen enjoyed attending plays at the Saenger Theatre with her friends and colleagues. She was a highly intelligent woman who loved to teach. Whether it was math, scripture, or the piano, she made sure she shared her knowledge. Gwen had a one of a kind soul and loved her family fiercely. She will be forever missed.
She is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Johnny Lee Autin; daughter, Angelina Autin Kelly (Scott); sons, Jaimie Lee Autin (Chrissie), Ryan Matthew Autin (Kayla Unbehagen); mother, Sylvia Miller Hastings; sister, Brynn Campo (Sam); brothers, Malcolm “Bo” Hastings (Glenda), Kenneth Hastings (Mary), Benjamin Darrel Hastings (Brittany); grandchildren, Carter Marshall Autin, Jackson Ramsey Autin, Hunter Sidell Kelly, Wyatt Tobice Kelly; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her father, Malcolm Gwyn Hastings.

JUDITH STRODE CHADWICK

Judith Strode Chadwick  passed away on Wednesday, March 11, 2020, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, at the age of 72.  She was born on Monday, September 15, 1947 in Amite, Louisiana to the late Claribel and Charles Strode.  She was a resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Judith is survived by her husband, James Chadwick; sons, Kevin Chadwick and Brian Chadwick and daughter-in-law, Jill; grandchildren, Cameron and Myles Chadwick; sisters, Gloria Jones, Marie Russell, Patti Raborn (James), Brenda Tucker (Johnny), and Kathy Lawrence (Dean); and many loved nieces, nephews, and friends.

In addition to her parents, Judith was also preceded in death by her brothers-in-law, Gordon Jones and Don Russell; father- and mother-in-law, Arvil and Josie Chadwick.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond, 2000 N. Morrison Blvd, Hammond, Louisiana 70401, on Sunday, March 15, 2020, beginning at 9:00 AM until the funeral service begins at 11:00 am.

A special heartfelt thanks to all of our friends and family who have called, sent messages, and offered their help, love and prayers during this journey as God called her home. We would also like to thank the Hospice of Baton Rouge nurses and team for her care.

Interment will follow in Joiner Cemetery, Loranger, Louisiana.

Services Wednesday

David and I watched two church services yesterday, FBC, Kentwood and West Rome Baptist Church in Georgia.  The message I got from both of them was to have faith, not fear.  I talked with my sister, Julie.  She said that was the message she received from the service in Hammond she watched.  Let’s practice FAITH!

 

 

 

I read the new guidelines saying there will be for no crowds greater than fifty people.  We will see how creative people are to manage gatherings and still manage to gather.  I know it can be done.

 

 

 

Mrs. Ann Chapman sent this update.

Our Emma is now back at MS College. Deloy and Krisa are there and will be bringing her home in the morning. Deloy’s office has closed and he will be working from home the next two weeks. Krisa, being a nurse, has been given the OK to work. We continue to pray that Emma stays clear of the virus. I will be chatting with her across the fence only, but that is fine just to see her smiling face will be a blessing. God bless each of you. Stay safe.

Karen Seymour, a former student, is one of many people we know who has health issues that make it dangerous for her to be sick.  Let’s pray for her and many others who already have heath issues and now deal with this virus all around.  Pray to God for guidance in staying healthy and in helping others stay healthy too.

 

 

 

Pray for the health care workers and others who are on the front lines of fighting this medical battle.  Maybe, you can find a way to help one or more of them this week.

  • Ochsner hospital will screen those who enter, but still will be available to give treatment
  • Family and friends who are only a phone call away
  • Food in the pantry and freezers
  • Walmart grocery pick-up
  • Many things I love to do at home
  • Ability and materials to craft for Operation Christmas Child  even when we cannot go shopping for shoebox items
  • ETC.

Now, make your own list.  It will make you feel better.

This is the second week for a new ministry that has started at FBC, Kentwood.  It is a weekend feeding program for local students.  Donations of food and/are money are being accepted.  Contacting the church office will be a good way to get involved.

 

 

 

Continue to pray for:

  • those who are sick
  • those who are well, but concerned about getting sick
  • those exposed to the new virus
  • those who are elderly (I cannot put an age with that word.)
  • those with a compromised immune system
  • those who are traveling
  • those who attend schools
  • those in the military, law enforcement, etc.
  • those who go into a compromised environment daily
  • What I am saying is to pray for everyone as decisions are being made about changing or not changing routines due to possible illnesses.  May medical professional, family, and God be in on any life-style changes being made.

It’s been almost a week since we got the call that Donald Alford had passed away.  He wasn’t sick but a little more than two months.  His death was the third one in less than a year in David’s family – two brothers and a brother-in-law!  Pray for families who face multiple sorrows today.

Ferrie Gene Blackmon is home from St. Tammany and has been home since since Wednesday night,  Pray she does well in recovering from her heart problem.

 

 

 

Sherrill Caraway of Greensburg area is having more issues with his heart rate.  Please pray for him.

 

 

 

Bryan and Rita Tate are home from M. D. Anderson – Bryan got all good reports.

 

 

 

Chuck and Mary Ellen Brister are also home from M. D. Anderson.  Chuck had two strong treatments and is doing very well.  They are still hoping for a diagnosis of Chuck’s problem.

 

 

 

David and I went to the church for a few hours yesterday to work on Operation Christmas Child.  We were happy to find some items that had been turned in Sunday.  Thanks for your contributions.  If you are not in a Sunday School class but would like to participate in the “shoebox” ministry, ideas for items you might want to contribute will be available on a poster by the organ.  Remember, each shoebox we pack will introduce an average of seven people to Jesus.  Can you put a dollar value on that?  What is your salvation worth to you?

The parents of the children of FBC, Kentwood are planning a church cookbook to raise some money for camp for the boys and girls this summer.  Your recipes can be turned in at the church.  I hope to find some time before Sunday to get some together for them and hope you will be doing the same.  To make it super easy, you can use your phone to take a picture of the recipes and send it to one of the mothers.  Let me know if you need more information on who to contact.

My sister and a friend are delivering 250 t-shirts for OCC today.  I am thrilled for Julie’s support and for the shirts that will bless many young lives.  She has enjoyed making the shirts extra special.

Operation Christmas Child

Thanks to all those who turned in items for OCC yesterday.  We are so thankful for your support.  Everything is being grouped and sorted into the proper groups for packing in the coming months.  The boys and girls who will receive the “shoeboxes” will be so excited.  I will be excited to know they have the opportunity to learn about Jesus.  Shoeboxes are a means of reaching families all around the world without ever taking a step out of our area.  Each one is an economical meals of witnessing to about seven people.  That means a small effort on our part makes a big difference eternally in lives of people we will never meet.  What an opportunity!

 

 

 

The family that had the tea to earn shipping money for OCC shoeboxes earned enough to ship 24 shoeboxes.  What awesome support the family provides for these two young “packers”!  They are planning another tea about Mother’s Day.  I’ll let you know, so you can plan to attend too.
