Thankfulness: Day 20 – Today, I want to share how happy I am that God sees and plans the “big picture” of our lives. My newest example is that Boyd and Jennie, who were living in Prague, were offered a job for one year in the States.  God had it all arranged, even though those who do this special assignment are usually older and more experienced.  Since that time, Boyd’s dad was diagnosed with a brain tumor and passed away.  Being stateside made it much easier for the family to have some quality time with his family.  Now, Mallory has been burned and is being treated in one of the best burn centers.  It doesn’t just happen by accident that they are living only 20 miles from one of the best burn units in the country!  God is so good.  He sees the “big picture” and plans our lives in accordance to what is best for us!

Susan’s surgery went well.  One section of the thyroid was easily and quickly removed.  Susan will stay overnight before returning to Kentwood tomorrow.

This is the greatest decision any person could ever make!

I’m so thankful to be able to report that Joe Easley was at Sunday School and church (NZBC) yesterday.   He even was able to be in the choir.  I know there were many people thanking God as for the progress Joe has made.  Joe and his family were surely saying “Thank-you” the loudest!

Mallory is back in the burn unit in Richmond.  We are so thankful the family is right where God placed them this year.  What a blessing it is for her to receive such specialized treatment.  She continues to take everything in stride.  She’s a real inspiration!

This is the week for Operation Christmas Child Shoebox collections to be turned in.  All those boxes will be on the way for little children soon.  I thank God for knowing each box is an opportunity to introduce a child to Jesus.  Pray with me that many of the children will be saved because of the boxes packed in many churches, schools, etc.

I have two announcements to share.

  1. Young at Heart will be at 10:30 Tuesday at New Zion Baptist Church.  Mrs. Yvonne Curtis will be the guest musician.  Young at Heart is for the senior adults in this area. You will be welcomed and blessed by being there.
  2. David and I invite you to our cabin for the Third Thursday gathering this week at 6:30. Young and old are invited to join us.

Third Thursday

We will meet at the cabin this Thursday, the third one of the month.  We meet at 6:30 and look forward to seeing who can come this month.  I believe that if you come, you’ll be blessed, not because of David or me, but because of God and other people.  Anyway, the door is open to all….

Thankfulness: Day 16 – Today, I’m thankful for opportunities.  God provides many for us, but unfortunately we seem to miss some of the best of them for selfish reasons.

  •   We might have opportunities to worship, but choose to be in a stadium, on a beach, or in a campground.
  • We might have opportunities to help someone, but choose to do something where we focus on ourselves.
  • We might have the opportunity to provide a service, but….

You get the idea.  What opportunities will you have today.  Which ones will you deny to please yourself, not God?

  • Susan Rimes’ thyroid surgery is still scheduled for the 18th as previously planned.

Karen Miller is in Alabama with her mom.  Pray for them as they check on Mrs. Rigby‘s current situation with treatment.

Reminder – Next week is the time for churches to turn in their “shoeboxes” so they can be shipped to needy children around the world.  Remember, the boxes take “Jesus” along with the gifts.

(Bro. John has played an important part in the lives of my Texas relatives.  I cherish the memories of hearing him preach and staying in his home after a hurricane caused the Tollesons to abandon their home until services could be repaired in their area.  Momma and I drove to Texas to pick up my aunt and three cousins.  Thankfully, they survived a close call when their new church gave in during the second half of the storm.  They had moved from the new building to the old building during the eye of the hurricane.  God protected all those who found refuge at the church that night.  Bro. John and Uncle Charles served together on staff of two churches in Texas.)

Thankfulness: Day 13 – I’m thankful for medical care.  No, David and I are not sick or seeing a doctor, but I have a number of friends who are.  I’m thankful they can get medical care and for the most part, be “good as new” soon.  For others, the medical care eases their life or their last days, for which I am thankful.

Mrs. Judy Liberto is hospitalized in Hammond for a few days of testing.  Pray they get her problem “figured out” so she can return to her normal life.  She in room 4108.  (She was sweet to call for an address to send a card to Mallory last week.  You know she will be receiving one from me now!)

Don Dickinson continues to do well following heart surgery.  He should be coming home today or tomorrow.  Continue to pray for Don and Judy during the recovery time.  Thank God Don’s appointment was scheduled for that particular day.

Pray for the Blackwell family.  They seem to have a “full plate”, but thankfully God has given Alan Ray and Mr. John Alan such sweet spirits.  Pray for them and for their family members.

Mr. Bud Callihan continues to be in North Oaks.  Thank God for the faithfulness of “Miss” Verna and others.  Pray for peace and comfort for Mr. Bud and continued strength and faithfulness for the family and friends.

Theresa Rhodus, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. “Red” Rhodus, is hospitalized in Lafayette.  She is very sick.  Please pray for the family.

Sherman Cutrer has had one surgery this week and will probably have another on tomorrow.  Thank God for His faithfulness to Sherman and his family.

Mr. Bobby Lawson is still hospitalized in McComb.  He is a little better.  Continue to pray for him.

Mrs. Anne Hurst is better.  Thank you for praying for her.

Jimmy Schwartz will be completing his radiation treatment Thursday of next week.  Thank God for those who took turns getting Jimmy back and forth to Mary Bird Perkins for his treatment.

Mr. Nick Salidino has suddenly become very ill.  Please pray for “Miss” Peggy, Nicky, and other family members and friends.

Cindy Juban, Andy Taylor’s sister, was prepped for surgery when the medical staff found she had a slight temperature.  The process was shut down.  Pray for Cindy as she deals with the delay.  May she she God’s hand in the delay.

Continue to pray for Donna Fay Miller and others undergoing medical tests.  May the tests reveal what needs to be done in each situation so these people can have a better, less stressful life.

John Perkins: Historic time for race relations

Race relations pioneer John Perkins, in a lecture at Southern Seminary, sees “a pivot place in history.” Perkins, 84, points to “an underlying movement today that now people are wanting to do mission with people, and they want to learn from people,” and they see the diversity of human beings as “a value in life.”

‘Be the church,’ Colo. Baptists urged

The Colorado Baptist General Convention approved a budget that designates more than half of Cooperative Program receipts after shared expenses for Southern Baptist Convention missions and ministries and gathered around the theme “Be the Church” at its annual meeting Oct. 13-14 in Centennial.

Hope Center

As the first freeze approaches I think of the people who do not have a warm coat that fits them and keeps them warm on the days like we are facing later this week. If you have some extra winter clothing you will not be wearing this year, please consider donating it to Hope Center in Roseland. You can drop the clothing off there, leave it just inside the door to the office of FBC, Kentwood, or let me know. I will make arrangements to have it picked up or pick it up myself. It would be nice to have more long sleeve shirts, sweats, sweaters, robes, jackets, and coats to offer at Hope Center. The sooner you can drop off the items, the better. That old thermometer is dropping!

Lottie Moon Tea 

Ladies of all ages, if your church has not already made plans to send ladies and girls to the Lottie Moon Tea, it’s time to start. The tea will be Sunday, November 30th at 2 P.M. at FBC, Kentwood. This is for ladies from all our area churches. There is no cost, just show up, but be sure to do that. The program will be varied this year with special music led by and presented by Diane Simmons, skits by EGBC and NZBC, and information about Lottie Moon and the offering we take in her honor so you can share with your church. Mark you calendar. Begin announcing at your church. Plan to be a part and learn something you didn’t know. I hope to see all of you there. Feel free to bring a friend or two with you.

Sue Lavene, Eleanor’s sister, is doing well.  Sue will be in ICU for 24 hours before going to a regular room.  Thank you for praying for this family.

Don Dickinson is progressing and has been moved to a room in the telemetry unit on the second floor.  His room is 2229.  All the tubes have been removed, but Don is still on a heart monitor.  Thank you for your continued prayers for Don and Judy.

J. Santangelo‘s doctors are again saying they do not see tumor growth.  Join the family in thanking God for his progress.

Mallory Hatchel is progressing very well.  She continues to be at home and monitored by family and a home health nurse.  Keep praying.

Thankfulness: Day 12 – Meals!  Yes, I’m thankful to have food, but I mean the sit-down meals we have with family and/or friends.  What a blessing they are!  Much more important than the food is the company!  Meals with an individual, a small group, or even a large group can be such a blessing if we are focused on the people with us and not distracted by other things such as a television.  Take time to really enjoy some meals this week.

Tuesday

Veteran’s Day – Today, we honor all who served in any branch of the military whether it was a long time ago or recently.  Our family cemetery, Taylor Cemetery, has only a few graves, but four are veterans.  One served in the Civil War, one in the War of 1812, one in WWII, and one one Vietnam.  The first three were named Grant and the last named Alfred.  I’m proud of my heritage, especially the veterans.  Honor those you know who have served.

 

Thankfulness: Day 11 – I’m proud of the military history I just mentioned.  I also have two male first cousins.  Both of them served during the 70’s.  My two uncles on Momma’s side of the family also served – one in WWII and one in the 50’s.  We have been so blessed as a country because of the great military our country is known for.

It takes many individuals to make the military.  I’m proud to see military people in airports and other places.  I can see the pride they bring their families.  I can also see the uncertainly of the future they all have in their hearts.  They bring tears to my eyes as I think of all they endure for me.

This summer, David and I saw numerous military people in another state. David took time to talk with the.  They seemed to appreciate his attention and kind words.  What a small price we pay for the sacrifices they make!

 

Macy Gueldner and her family had a long, busy day yesterday.  Please keep them in your prayers today.  Two posts from last night are included.  Please pray for this family.

“We should be home tonight!!! We’re waiting on some medical equipment, then we’re out of here. They’ve chosen an antibiotic that they hope to kill the bacteria in her line. It’s an IV medicine that I’ll have to give her 3 times a day for 2 weeks. Each infusion lasts an hour, so I’ll be infusing her before work, then rushing home after I finish my last class, then again late at night. I’m already exhausted from the last few days. If you see me in the coming days, just ignore the bags that will be building under my eyes!”

“I couldn’t make this stuff up if I tried….While waiting on Macy’s meds, pumps, and discharge, my already bad headache got much worse. I’ve never had a migraine, but I guess there’s a first time for everything. So, the full blown migraine (with vomiting and all) was NOT fun. In fact, when Macy finally got discharged, I couldn’t even walk. So, I was wheeled out in a wheelchair along with her (true story!) Thank God for Dee and Joan who had been with me all day. They made plans to bring me to Jeremy and my mom, but I finally felt god enough to drive. Guess what? The story’s not over…While unloading the car, the IV pump fell (and broke) on the driveway. Yep, the pump we waited on all day, and the pump that Macy needs to infuse her meds in a couple of hours. So, Jeremy was going to drive back to BR (mind you, we are an hour and a half away) but they called back and will send a delivery guy out to bring it to us… for me to infuse Macy in the middle of the night, then go teach 150 Biology students tomorrow!

Thankfulness: Day 8, God’s Timing – Today, I’m thankful for family members having a special assignment in the States for a year.  When Mallory had a medical need this week, she quickly received first class treatment.  It’s always good to recognize God’s hand in the timing of life’s events.

“Macy’s Mystery Fevers” finally have a diagnosis…. a central line infection. NOT good!! The cultures grew a bacteria, that is most likely growing in her line (straight to her heart.) So, Jeremy and Macy are rushing to the hospital to get antibiotics started. This is a new one for us, so we’re not really sure of the protocol, but we know that OLOL have us a “suite” waiting. We’ll be inpatient for a few days, probably until there’s no evidence of infection.

Cate will be cheering in the game tonight, so we’ll stay back for a few hours, unless things worsen.

Please pray for Macy to be healed quickly, and that we can STAY HOME, for work and school, with MUCH LESS interruptions!

Mr. Bobby Lawson was taken to Southwest Hospital Thursday Night.  Continue to pray for him and those caring for him.

  • I am scheduled to have one of my knees replaced on November 25. Please
    pray that the surgery and recovery will go well.
  • Also, please pray for my husband, Joe, who has not been feeling well lately. It has been 14 years since he was diagnosed with CLL (chronic lymphocytic leukemia).
  • And, of course, please pray for our daughter, Melanie Lucido, who battles Wegener’s disease on a daily basis.

But, even with all our problems, God has been so good to us and we put our trust and faith in him now and forever. We appreciate your prayers on our behalf!

He was moved this afternoon to the Neuro-Medical Center Rehab Hosp at Bluebonnet and Perkins to begin the next phase of his recovery. He’ll probably be there for a week, maybe two, depending on how well he progresses through rehab. Prayers are still requested as I’m thinking this will be a tough time for him. He was running fever this afternoon and still in a lot of discomfort. The fever has broken and he is medicated and will hopefully get some rest tonight. Thank you.  Kathy

Mrs. Anne Hurst – “Miss” Anne is in Greensburg hospital for regular medication and monitoring.  Pray with her that she can get back in her routine soon.

Susan Rimes will have additional testing on her thyroid on November 12th and surgery on the 18th at North Oaks.  Pray for Susan and her family as she prepares for this to happen.

Unspoken request for friends – Pray for some friends who are not ready to share their need here yet.

Mallory got to go home yesterday afternoon.  She’ anxious to do her school work and make up and keep up with her lessons.  She will be at home for at least two weeks.  Home health begins today.  Thank-you for praying.  Thank God for walking through this problem with Mallory and her family.

Thankfulness: Day 7 – This was not in my original thoughts, but is now because of Mallory’s burns.  I thank God for all that happened “just right” to help Mallory and her family this week.  Neighbors, friends, co-workers, etc. brought love and encouragement to the family.  I’m also thankful the family was in Richmond and close to great medical care.  The family was blessed last month when Boyd’s dad passed away and again this month.  God can and does get people through difficult days.  I’m so thankful they know Him and He knows them as His children!

This devotional is the one scheduled for everyone to read today.  Amazingly, God timed it “just right” for me.  He does things like that all the time for us.

    • Do your own Google search to see how many big-time musical artists (Johnny Cash, Red Foley, Frank Sinatra, Red Foley, Loretta Lynn, Ronnie Milsap, Elvis Presley, etc.) have recorded this song.  I think that shows many people are searching for that peace.
    • I think it speaks to us any day, but especially in a time of need.
    • I hope you know this peace today, so it will be with you each day of your life, especially the difficult ones.
