Adjust

darkness.jpg
A GOOD FRIEND of mine’s personal statement on Facebook says, “Don’t let your eyes adjust to the dark…”

He gives no explanation or elaboration, and for his friends who are unfamiliar with the Bible, the message probably makes no sense. When I first read it, I assumed it was some inside joke between him and another friend. But knowing the kind of person he is, it occurred to me that he was talking about spiritual, not physical, darkness. In fact, his words effectively summarize what Jesus said in Matthew 6:22-23.

God created our physical eyes to easily adjust to dark surroundings, but He never intended for our souls to adapt to the darkness of sin and its effects. To His dismay, however, too many of His children find spiritual darkness normal, and some even find it quite comfortable. Is this true of you or me? Have our spiritual eyes adjusted to darkness when:

  • Sin saturates the shows or movies we watch, the things we read, or the websites we visit?
  • We see others hurting or suffering and yet feel no compassion for them?
  • We misuse our mouths with bad language, gossip, harsh criticism, or other cruelty?

The world is often a dark place, and its shadows can easily creep into our lives and overwhelm us. But God’s light will always eliminate the darkness of sin and as His lights, we can even make this world a brighter place. “For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light” ( Ephesians 5:8). Blaine Kelly

“The eye is the lamp of the body.

So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light,

but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.

If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!”

His first time at church

A young man left his country of Sri Lanka to earn money and help his family back home.  Sri Lanka is a large island nation near India. It is one of the countries that was hit by the huge storm in 2004—the tsunami. Most of the people are Buddhist and don’t know Jesus as Savior.

This young man became a lifeguard at a resort then met some Christians.  He went to their house church meeting—it was the first time he had ever been to church.  The Christians found him a Bible and the JESUS film in his language.

Now we need to pray that he will want to watch the video and read God’s Word.  Pray that he will learn that Jesus can provide for all his needs.

Prayer Requests from Missionary Kids

Please pray for my grandparents.  My mom’s dad is sick with a lung disease called emphysema. My dad’s dad and his brother both just had surgery.  My dad’s mom tore a muscle. My dogs: I miss them and they’re probably very sad.  Thanks for your prayers. PRISCILA, age 12 (American peoples)

Please help people the people I know in my country to Believe Jesus.  The culture can be dirty but it’s GREAT. Please help me know more about you too.  Jacob, age 8 (Northern African and Middle Eastern peoples)

There is a girl in my class that is coming to youth group please pray that she will come to know the Lord and learn more about Him and His Word.  Thank God for her coming to youth.  There is a boy in my class that I have been trying to get to come to youth but he always has excuses.  Please pray that he will come and know Him and learn more about Him.  MEREDITH, age 13 (Sub-Saharan African peoples)

Please help my family have a safe trip on Saturday to a new place.  AN, age 6 (Southeast Asian peoples)

I’VE NEVER READ the sotry of a great man without finding that at one time or another in that man’s life he went through days of hurt, and it was the molding influence of the hurt that made the man what he was…

BOOKSTORE SHELVES ARE full of books on marriage, many of them describing the reasons marriages fail…

Such books are usually written by therapists, who spend their time working with clients whose marriages are experiencing meltdown.  A great deal can obviously be learned from marital pathology.  We need to know why marriages fail.  But the absence of death doesn’t mean the presence of health.  Many marriages are sick but never die in divorce or separation.  So the most important question is why some marriages thrive and enjoy vigorous good health.  Models of succes are priceless in a world filled with failures.  That’s why Ephesians 5 helps us, by illuminating three essential qualities of a thriving marriage: sacrifice, intimacy, and Christ.  Gary Inrig

“Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”’ This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.” Ephesians 5:21-33
I’m thankful for models of long-time, Christ centered marriages.  What a blessing these folks have been on my life!

“IT IS MOST likely that in the Apostolic age when there was but ‘one Lord, one faith, and one baptism,’ and no differing denominations existed, that baptism of a convert by that very act constituted him a member of the church, and at once endowed him with all the rights and privileges of full membership…
In that sense, ‘baptism was the door into the church.’  Now it is different…” (Edward T. Hiscox, The Standard Manual For Baptist Churches, Published by The American Baptist Publication Society, 1890, p. 14).
Kind questions:
.  Why is it different today?  Should it be different?
.  Why do we have so many different churches today, when it is freely admitted that there was only one system of faith (cf. Ephesians 4:5) in the Apostolic age?  (Denominationalism, by its own admission is composed of thousands of religious groups, often wearing different man-made names, teaching conflicting religious doctrines, and endorsing contradictory practices).
.  Since Jesus prayed for unity and oneness (cf. John 17:20-21), how can we justify religious division today?
.  How did Paul respond on those occasions when weak and immature brethren in the first century attempted to denominate and fracture themselves (1 Corinthians 1:11-13; cf. 3:1ff)?
.  How many churches did Jesus promise to build (Matthew 16:18)?
.  Since Christ is the bridegroom and the church is His bride, how can He be married to thousands of different churches and not be guilty of polygamy?  Did Jesus endorse “one man for one woman for life” (cf. Matthew 19), yet practice “one Man for thousands of women” Himself?
.  Since a bride wears the name of her bridegroom, why would anyone wish to wear any name other than that of Christ’s?
.  How many approved denominations can you read about in the New Testament?
.  Did the apostles, who were guided into all truth (John 16:13), ever encourage men to join the church of their choice (Galatians 3:27; cf. Acts 2)?
Consider the words of John Wesley, noted Methodist leader of long ago.  He wrote, “Would to God that all party names and unscriptural phrases and forms which have divided the Christian world were forgotten: and that we might all agree to sit down together as humble, loving disciples at the feet of a common Master, to hear His word, imbibe His Spirit, and transcribe His life in our Own” (Wesley’s Notes on the New Testament, p. 7).
“Now I plead with you, brethren,
by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
that you all speak the same thing,
and that there be no divisions among you,
but that you be perfectly joined together
in the same mind and in the same judgment.”
1 Corinthians 1:10

Spirit

evita-photos2.jpgDR. PEDRO ARA Sarria perfected a technique for preserving the body and applied it to Argentina’s Eva Peron…

The embalmed body was kept intact but, for political reasons, was moved from place to place. It went from his laboratory in Buenos Aries to a military camp, to a dusty storeroom in Bonn, Germany, to a secret grave in Milan, Italy, to an attic in Madrid, back to a chapel in Argentina, and finally to a family tomb.

What happens to our bodies after we die may not be very important. What happens to the spirit is very important. Whether our bodies are buried, cremated, lost in an explosion, or buried at sea, it makes no difference. The real concern is that the soul be at home with God.

“And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting contempt” ( Daniel 12:2).

Weary

football.jpgTHE WORST DEFEAT in a college football game came on October 7, 1916, when Georgia Tech played Cumberland College of Tennessee…

The final score was 222 to 0. The much smaller Cumberland players were mauled.

Cumberland had discontinued its football program before the season, but was not permitted to cancel its game against the Engineers. The fact that Cumberland’s baseball team had crushed Georgia Tech earlier that year 22-0 (amidst allegations that Cumberland used professional players) probably accounted for Georgia Tech coach John Heisman’s running up the score on the bulldogs.

Cumberland received the opening kickoff and failed to make a first down. After a punt, the Engineers scored on their first play. Cumberland then fumbled on their next play from scrimmage, and a Tech player returned it for another touchdown. The Bulldogs fumbled again the next time they had the ball, and Tech took two plays to score its third touchdown. Cumberland lost nine yard on its next possession, then gave up a fourth touchdown two plays later.

The Engineerss led 63-0 after the first quarter and 126-0 at halftime. Tech added 54 more points in the third quarter and 42 in the final period. Cumberland’s longest play during the game was a 10-yard pass (on 4th and 22). Tech scored on every one of its drives.

Sometimes our situation seems hopeless. We’ve dropped the ball and we don’t feel like picking it up again and running with it. We’ve been knocked down time and time again, and we just want to quit the game. But what we feel like doing and what we should do are two different things.

“Let us not become weary in doing good,

for at the proper time we will reap a harvest

if we do not give up.”

Galatians 6:9 NIV

HOW TO GIVE ADVICE

The wife was busy frying eggs, when her husband came home. He walked into the kitchen and immediately started yelling. “CAREFUL!!!  CAREFUL!  MORE OIL!  TURN THEM!  TURN THEM NOW!  WE NEED MORE OIL!  THEY ARE GOING TO STICK!  CAREFUL!  CAREFUL!  TURN THEM!  TURN THEM!!!  HURRY UP!  ARE YOU CRAZY!  THE OIL IS GOING TO SPILL!  USE MORE SALT!  THE SALT!!”

The wife was very upset, “What is wrong with you?  Why are you yelling like this?  Do you think I don’t know how to fry an egg?”

The husband calmly replied, “I just wanted you to know what it’s like for me when I am driving the car and you’re sitting next to me.”

Without making specific judgments about wives giving advice to their husbands while driving (or about husbands giving advice to their wives while cooking!), let me simply say that we all need to be conscious of how we give advice to others.  The author of the book of Proverbs has much to say on the subject.  In fact, the words “tongue”, “mouth”, “lips” and “words” are mentioned in Proverbs almost 150 times!

Consider these words of advice about giving advice:

Know all the facts before you give advice – “He who answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame to him.” (Prov. 18:13)

Give advice in a calm manner – “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” (Prov. 15:1)

Be careful about giving unsolicited advice – “In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise.” (Prov. 10:19)

But when advice is needed, be prepared to give godly advice – “The heart of the righteous studies how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil.” (Prov. 15:28)

Above all, give advice out of a sincere love for your friend – “Open rebuke is better than love carefully concealed.  Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.” (Prov. 27:5-6)

When you give advice, may it be “a word fitly spoken” (Prov. 25:11) because “a word spoken in due season, how good it is!” (Prov. 15:23)

Have a great day!

Two aren’t enough

Riding an hour on muddy, pothole-filled roads—that’s how you get to the Maninka village in western Africa.  Two families just got back after visiting family in the United States for nine months. The family members are tired, but they are VERY excited to see their Maninka friends.  The villagers greet everyone enthusiastically. They are so happy that God has brought them back.

The families will travel all over the country of Guinea and visit as many Maninka villages as they can. But still, two families aren’t enough.  They can’t reach everyone.  It is important to have helpers who will go and share the love of Jesus.  Please pray for volunteers from conventions and churches in the U.S. who can go and help tell the Maninka people about Jesus.

IN THE FIRST century we see undenominational Christianity at work before it had been adulterated, corrupted, and perverted by the traditions and innovations of men…

It was a way of life so meaningful and powerful that it eventually conquered the Roman empire.
It was a transforming power over men, communities and nations (Acts 17:6, 19-23).  Undenominational Christianity was sufficient then as well as now.  Denominationalism is not only unauthorized, but it is unnecessary because Christianity flourished in the first century without it.
The average religious man would be perplexed if by some miracle he could be sent back twenty centuries amidst the early church and observe her work, worship, simplicity, fervor and rapid growth without any ecclesiastical or denominational trappings.  We read of congregations of believers, but no Congregationalists.  We read of penitent, baptized believers, but no Baptists.  We read of presbyters, or elders, who led each congregation, but no Presbyterians.  We read of method and order in worship, but no Methodists.  We read of bishops, Greek episkopos, who oversaw the church, but no Episcopalians.  We read of men trembling at the spoken word, but no Quakers.  We read of men all sharing the blessings of Pentecost, but no Pentecostals.  We read of brethren united in Christ, but no United Brethren.
“Greet one another with a holy kiss.
The churches of Christ greet you.”
Romans 16:16

“Be anxious for nothing,

but in everything by prayer and supplication,

with thanksgiving

, let your requests be made known to God.”

Pray for Fay Faller.  She’s seeing a doctor about her arm today.  Pray for good advice.

Pray for Dana Bales Graham and her family as Dana has a tumor removed today.

We haven’t heard from Braden yet.  Pray the arm is fine, the antibiotic is working, and the lungs are clearing.

Callie Cole:

Good afternoon,

This is Frances.  I have time for a very quick update.  Callie is off the ventilator!  She seems to be tolerating and doing well.  Also, her eyes are wide open.  She remains unconscious and in a coma but she is improving.  I anticipate what the medical field calls “neurological storming”.  So, keep praying.  This is our chance to demonstrate our faithfulness and just how much we love Him.  Remember, in good times or bad times we will praise Him!

God bless you,
Frances

Quick update on Sophronia (my nickname for Callie; long story).  At the 12 o’clock visit they had removed the ventilator and Callie was breathing very well on her own.  She is still on 30% oxygen but other than that the respiration looks good.  She was sound asleep during the visitation and we could not rouse her, however the nurse on duty stated that Callie had opened her eyes wide open this morning but was non-responsive.  We would really like to see this for ourselves but we will have to take the nurses word for it for now.  Either way conscious or unconscious, eyes open has to be a good sign.  Thank you Lord and thanks to all of you who continue to lift her up to the Most High.

THE WORST DEFEAT in a college football game came on October 7, 1916, when Georgia Tech played Cumberland College of Tennessee…

“Let us not become weary in doing good,
for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Galatians 6:9 NIV

God loves us and walks along with us step-by-step.  Sometimes, he is there as a friend.  Other times as a guide.  He is an encourager some days.  Other days, he supports us and holds us up when we cannot keep going.  I’m so thankful he’s been there for me in all those capacities lately.  I depended on Him.  He did not let me down lately and never has!  What a friend!

Callie Cole

Dear Family and Friends,

No new news on Ms. Callie.  She has been moved to room 5, 4th floor, NSICU.  She is continuing to move her extremities and eyes.  She is doing good.

No news from the Shepard Center.  Make this an item for prayer.  If it is supposed to happen, I know it will.

Today is day 26.  I am holding on to God’s promises in scripture and to the fact that nothing comes to me except from the Father.  So that means, this circumstance went to the Father trickled down to me and has a great purpose for me and my family.  I want badly to get it!

Some have made the comment that I am their hero.  I know this statement was meant as a compliment but I dont want that title.  I will disappoint you.  The Lord, on the other hand, will never leave you or forsake you.  There is your Hero.
Give Him all the honor, glory and praise.  Sing to Him a new song.  Know that where faith blooms, miracles happen.  Im waiting on that miracle.  My faith in the Lord, Jesus Christ, is all I have to hang on to.  There is nothing else.  Please put your faith in the Lord and not man.  See the miracle.

Love,
Frances

WE DON’T ORDINARILY think of ears as beautiful parts of the body…

They never get featured on the covers of magazines.  There are not many songs or poems about ears.  No one seems to compliment them.  When did anyone come to you and say, “Nice set of ears you’ve got!”  In fact, ears take lots of abuse.  They get twisted by parents, punctured by metal shafts, invaded by gnats, clogged by wax, burned by the sun, frozen by the cold, and assaulted by a variety of loud noises.  Some even get nibbled on now and then.
The truth is that ears are the marvelous creation of God.  They are beautiful and the ability to hear is one of God’s most precious gifts.  Lindsey Garmon
