“The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,” (Luke 4:18a, NKJV).

Dear Intercessors, this is Eleanor Witcher of the Office of Global Prayer Strategy, asking you to pray for outreach through medical work.

Five-gallon plastic buckets containing homecare supplies are being used in a home-based project east of Lusaka, Zambia, on a military base and in the villages in a wide area around the base. Both military personnel and church members are involved in the distribution. After receiving 60 buckets provided by Southern Baptist churches in the United States, a military chaplain thanked members of the Greater Lusaka Area Team and told how much the buckets were helping bedfast patients. His face glowed with excitement as he told how people were responding to the message of Christ.

God is doing great things in the Karachi, Pakistan medical community and in the lives of nurses and nursing students. Four young women recently committed their lives to Christ and made this known publically. Please lift up the leaderas she meets with these women and others whom they have invited to come and study the foundations of faith. Pray for these four women to drink in the spiritual milk they need now so they can grow in their new walk with Jesus.

A dental clinic held among the Kyrgyz of Central Asia allowed the team to serve approximately 200 people, relieving many from the pain of terribly rotten and abscessed teeth and doing much-needed teaching on basic dental care. There were opportunities for Truth to be shared, and there was much rejoicing in heaven as one person accepted Christ as personal Lord and Savior.

* Please pray for those who receive homecare buckets that their hearts would also be open to the Gospel.

* As we rejoice over decisions leading to salvation, pray also for their on-going discipleship.

* Ask the Lord to guide you to the brokenhearted in your community and to a ministry you can perform in His honor.

Working with dad

We attended our Parent-Teacher Conference at school this morning. And, that means no school for the rest of the day. I know what I want to do…go with my dad to visit the guys in the Nairobi Business as Mission ministry.

I like being around the guys and visiting with them and doing things with them. There are ten of them who work in leather crafting four days a week. The rest of the week they spent their time with their Bible storying groups and telling the good news in their communities.

Today I worked with the guys in the shop. We have several Christmas projects we are working on. Today, I helped put ornamental strings on beaded leather Christmas ornaments. It was harder to do than you think. The strings are small and it’s not easy to tie the knots. The guys asked a lot of questions about what was happening at school and I was glad to visit with them.
I have to return to school tomorrow and I will miss them. I pray that their groups go well this week and many visitors come to the groups to hear the Bible stories. ERIN, age 12 (Sub-Saharan African peoples)

Prayer Requests from Missionary Kids

Please pray for my uncle. He is in the hospital and his brain recently started to bleed. Please pray for me, and my family because this is our 2nd time on stateside assignment and it is a little bit harder than it was because we were creating new relationships and new friends in Brazil so it’s harder to readjust when your older. GLORIA, age 12 (American peoples)

Pray for us and our family as we spend time together this last month before our new baby brother arrives.  Pray we will be able to enjoy our parents and feel loved and secure and ready for all the changes that will take place soon. WIL, age 1, and ANNA, age 3 (European peoples)

Who’s missing? Whose mission?

You play a key role in teaching children about God’s love for children who live in Peru, Ghana, India or China, about the people He uses to show His love and about His commission to all who love Him to tell His story around the world. During 2009, we invite you to join us as we focus on “Who’s Missing? Whose Mission?”  More than 1.5 billion people are still missing out on the opportunity to hear the Gospel. Do your children know they have an important role in helping to reach them?

Are you ready for a challenge?
THINKING ABOUT GOD

Richard Fairchild tells the following story in his book, “Not Far From the Kingdom of God”:

In the days of the circuit riders a minister was out riding one afternoon and came upon a man out working in his field.

“Fine day, isn’t it?” the minister called out.

“It’s fine for you”, the man replied, “All you have to do is ride around on that horse thinking about God all day long, while I have to sweat here in this field and then walk home afterward. I don’t think it is right you should have things so easy while I have to work so hard.”

“On the contrary”, the minister answered, “thinking about God is one of the most difficult things you can do.  And to prove it, I’ll give you this horse if you can think about God and nothing else for one minute.”

“You’re on,” said the man and immediately he sat down in silence.  Thirty seconds later he looked up at the minister, and said, “Does that include the saddle?”

I would agree that thinking about God and nothing else is a very difficult thing to do.  I would also add, though, that it is just as hard for ministers as it is anyone else!

The apostle Paul wrote, “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Colossians 3:2).

But our mind is filled nearly every minute of the day with things on this earth — concerns about things that have happened, concerns about things that will (or might) happen, concerns about what we have (or don’t have), concerns about how to get what we don’t have, concerns about people that have done us wrong, concerns about what we want others to do for us.

And our mind is so crowded with the things of this world, that there’s just not much room left for God.  It’s hard to think about God and God alone, for there is so much competing for our attention.

Allow me to give you this challenge — think about God and nothing else for one minute.  If you can achieve that goal, strive for five minutes.  May thoughts of God increasingly fill your mind so that you can eventually say with the Psalmist all day long, “I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty, and on Your wondrous works.” (Psalm 145:15)

Have a great day!

THE STORY IS told of a little boy who was helping his father move stones out of a ditch…

“Dad, here’s a big one’, he said.  ‘I’ve done my best, but I can’t budge it.’  The father replied, ‘Son, you have never, never done your best until you have asked your father to help you.'”  That story well illustrates a real problem many of us experience.  We try to grapple with guilt without going to our heavenly Father for help.  Gary Hampton

AS PROFESSIONAL GOLFER Ray Floyd got ready to tap in a routine nine-inch putt, he saw the ball move ever so slightly…

According to the rule book, if the ball moves at all, the golfer must take a penalty stroke.  Floyd was among the leaders in the tournament offering a top prize of $108,000.  To acknowledge that the ball had moved could mean losing his chance for big money.

Writer David Holahan described what some golfers might have done: “The athlete ducks his head and flails wildly with his hands, as if being attacked by a killer bee; next, he steps back from the ball, rubbing his eye for a phantom speck of dust, all the while scanning the playing partners and the gallery for any sign that the ball’s movement has been detected by others.  If the coast is clear, he taps the ball in for his par.”

Ray Floyd, however, didn’t do that.  He assessed himself a penalty stroke and wound up with a bogey on the hole.

The patriarch Job also showed remarkable honesty in matters not seen my human observers.  He maintained his integrity by fearing God and shunning evil.  Job knew that the eyes of the Lord were on him at all times, and that was what really mattered to him.  The true test of our integrity comes when no one is watching us.  If we remember that God sees what others don’t and that it’s His approval that matters, our integrity will improve. Wait

clock2.jpgSOMETIMES GOD SEEMS to take forever…

You wait and wait and wait. But when He finally moves, He does more in one hour and you could accomplish in a lifetime. So it’s your choice: be busily consumed with your paltry attempts or wait on God until He moves in the fulness of His glory and purposes. God’s sense of timing is like this: He waits forever and then moves suddenly and instantaneously. There’s only one way to even begin to tune into God’s sense of timing, and that is through waiting. Waiting transports us out of the temporal, out of our time-zone, and into His time-zone.

God can out-wait anybody. He just waits and waits, while the crisis looms larger and larger, and He waits some more. He waits until the crisis becomes an impossible predicament. And then He waits some more! Finally, when the remotest chance of escape is completely gone, God intervenes suddenly. A good example of this is Abraham.

God promised Abraham a son when he was 75 years old, even though Sarah was baren. And then God waits five years, ten years, fifteen years, twenty years. By now it’s too late. Even if Sarah were not barren, she is now too old, and so is Abraham. Twenty-five years. Count them. Twenty-five interminable years. Finally, when all natural hope was exhausted, God provided and Sarah became pregnant! God is the king of wait. (Bob Sorge)

“Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him;

do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,

because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.”

FIXING THE PROBLEM means that I will apologize readily for my contribution and that I will focus on solutions, not mistakes…

The “ventilation” fad that encouraged people to focus on their feelings and vent their anger led to short-term relief and long-term regret.  As Carol Travis notes in a careful study of anger, “People, who are most prone to give vent to their rage get angrier, not less angry.”

Keep it private, not public.  There is a legitimate place for seeking wise, spiritual counsel.  That is very different than enlisting allies among family and friends, a process that distorts friendships and betrays marital loyalty.  When we draw others into the problem, the tendency is for a win-loss mind-set to develop, as others are encouraged to choose up sides.  Gary Inrig

“Moreover if your brother sins against you,
go and tell him his fault between you and him alone.
If he hears you, you have gained your brother.
But if he will not hear you, take with you one or two more,
that by the outh of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’
And if he refuses to hear them,
tell it to the church.
But if he refuses even to hear the church,
let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.”
Matthew 18:15-17
May you be blessed as you seek Him this Lord’s Day!

Ears

ears4.jpgWE DON’T ORDINARILY think of ear as beautiful parts of the body…

They never get featured on the covers of magazines. There are not many songs or poems about ears. No one seems to compliment them. When did anyone come to you and say, “Nice set of ears you’ve got!” In fact, ears take lots of abuse. They get twisted by parents, punctured by metal shafts, invaded by gnats, clogged by wax, burned by the sun, frozen by the cold, and assaulted by a variety of loud noises. Some even get nibbled on now and then.

The truth is that ears are the marvelous creation of God. They are beautiful and the ability to hear is one of God’s most precious gifts. Lindsey Garmon

COLUMNIST L. M. Boyd described the amazing good fortune of a man named Jack Wurm…

In 1949, broke and out of a job, he was walking along a San Francisco beach when he came across a bottle with a piece of paper in it.  The note inside was the last will and testament of Daisy Singer Alexander, heir to the Singer sewing machine fortune.  The note read, “To avoid confusion, I leave my entire estate to the lucky person who finds this bottle and to my attorney, Barry Cohen, share and share alike.”  According to Boyd, the courts accepted the theory that the heiress had written the note twelve years earlier and had thrown the bottle in the Thames River in London.  From there it had drifted across the oceans to the feet of the penniless and jobless Jack Wurm.  His chance discovery netted him over six
million dollars in cash and Singer stock.  M.R.D.II
Jack Wurm’s inheritance cannot compare with the one belonging to those of us “in Christ” (Galatians 3:27). Wurm has since then passed away and his money obviously has no value to him now.  Faithful Christians who die in the Lord will one day enjoy eternal life, eternal happiness, eternal gratitude, eternal peace, and eternal profit.

“To an inheritance incorruptible and undefiiled
and that does not fade away,
reserved in heaven for you.”
1 Peter 1:4

John Naul Felps
(March 10, 1930 – October 21, 2009)

Died on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at River Parishes Hospital in LaPlace, LA. He was a native of Baywood, LA, a resident of Reserve, LA, and a former resident of Kentwood, LA for 16 years. Age 79 years. Visitation at McKneely Funeral Home, Kentwood, from 12 Noon on Saturday until religious services at 2 p.m. Saturday. Interment Woodland Cemetery, Kentwood, LA. Survived by 3 sons, Gary Felps, Rodney Felps, and Michael Felps, 4 sisters, Lilian Peevy, Alma Stearns, Louise Croft, and Pauline Vick, 2 brothers, Verlyn Felps and Donald Felps, 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. THE PURSUIT OF WISDOM

There was once a small boy who banged a drum all day and loved every moment of it.  He would not be quiet, no matter what anyone else said or did.  Various attempts were made to do something about the child.

One person told the boy that he would, if he continued to make so much noise, perforate his eardrums.  This reasoning was too advanced for the child, who was neither a scientist nor a scholar.

A second person told him that drum beating was a sacred activity and should be carried out only on special occasions.  The third person offered the neighbors plugs for their ears; a fourth gave the boy a book; a fifth gave the neighbors books that described a method of controlling anger through biofeedback; a sixth person gave the boy meditation exercises to make him placid and docile. None of these attempts worked.

Eventually, a wise person came along with an effective motivation. He looked at the situation, handed the child a hammer and chisel, and asked, “I wonder what’s inside the drum?”

Ah, the wisdom of that man!  It reminds me of the wisdom demonstrated by King Solomon when two women came to him fighting over which of them was the true mother of a baby (I Kings 3:16-28).  Solomon was, of course, known for his great wisdom.

Solomon wrote, “Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.  She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.” (Prov. 3:13-15)

We need to understand, though, that knowledge and wisdom aren’t the same thing.  If you want to measure a person’s knowledge, you give them a test.  If they score 90 or above, they have a lot of knowledge.  If they score below 50, there’s not much knowledge there.  But determining the measure of a person’s wisdom is much more difficult.  You have to look at how he lives and the decisions he makes.

James Draper has said, “Wisdom is the skill to live in a way that is pleasing to God.  It is not simply information in our heads.  It is information that we put to use — where we live, where we work, and where we play.”

We live in a world where everyone seeks knowledge.  We value educaton.  We read books.  We watch news channels.  But how many of us pursue wisdom to the same extent?

Be assured that wisdom is not something that you will stumble into by accident.  It’s a pursuit.  It’s a search. It requires an attitude that says, “I want to learn from God how to live, and I want to apply those principles to my life.”

“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom.  And in all your getting, get understanding.” (Proverbs 4:7)

Have a great day!

IN AUGUST, 1857, CYRUS Field and his company, Atlantic Telegraph, attempted to lay a telegraph cable from England to North America, but the cable broke at twelve thousand feet under the ocean surface and could not be recovered…
During the next nine years, Field and his men made three more unsuccessful attempts.  Finally, in July, 1866, they succeeded in laying hundreds of miles of cable across the Atlantic.

Israel spent almost twenty-one years rebuilding the temple.  The work began in 537 B.C. and was finally completed in 516 B.C.  Israel’s enemies continually stopped the work; one period lasted as long as seventeen years.  People of less perseverence might have given up, but Israel had a deep desire to worship God.
Paul wrote about Christ’s patience, or, more exactly, His perseverance.  We may not understand why the Lord demonstrated patient determination in His humanity, but we are to follow His pattern.

“May the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God
and into the patience of Christ.”

“At the name of Jesus every knee should bow…” Philippians 2:10

MAY I KINDLY ask a few questions for your personal study and reflection…?
How many churches did Jesus promise to build?  Matthew 16:18

Did He say, “I will build a church?”  Did He say, “I will build My churches?”
Since Jesus promised to build HIS church (singular), how can we endorse and authorize religious division today?  We have hundreds of different churches in our country.  Each of them wears a different name.  Each of them promotes a different and often times conflicting doctrine.  Is this what the Lord had in mind when He made His promise?

Is the church the same thing as the body?  Ephesians 1:22, 23

How many bodies did Paul mention?  Ephesians 4:4; cf. Romans 12:4,5; 1
Corinthians 12:20

Since the church and the body are the same thing, and since Christ is the head of the body, how can we teach different, yea even opposing, doctrines?  Does the Head of the body contradict itself?

How many faiths does Paul mention?  Ephesians 4:5

“I do not pray for these alone,
but also for those who will believe in Me through their word;
they they all may be one,
as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You;
that they may be one in Us,
that the world may believe that You sent Me.”
John 17:20, 21
Continue to pray for some of the individuals and families who have been mentioned lately or for some that you know that have needs that were not mentioned.  Then, after you pray, make a phone call, send a card, visit, babysit, cook something, rake a yard, or do something else that is meaningful to that particular family.  You will be blessed as you minister to others.
