Thursday Addition

I have some updates I want to share this afternoon, rather than wait until tomorrow morning.

Marie G. Irwin

October 27, 1931 – December 01, 2018

resident of Amite, Marie Irwin (Genevieve Marie Guillory Irwin) known as “Blackie” to all of her friends and relatives from Eunice, LA passed to the Spiritual realm on Saturday December 1, 2018 at Summerfield Senior Living of Hammond. She was born October 27, 1931 in Eunice and was 87 years of age. She was a longtime resident of Amite, LA where she co-published two weekly newspapers, The Tangi Talk and Kentwood News for over 36 years. Her passing was swift as she went to be with her beloved husband, Bill. Although he preceded her in death twenty years ago, they were never apart. She talked of him daily with joyful memories. She and Bill bought the newspapers in 1960 when they moved to Amite and were quickly absorbed into the local communities. They loved their adventurous journeys traveling during Bill’s Navy days, but they set their anchor on a 40- acre patch of land on Chicken Farm Road and raised their family. They were active members of St. Helena Catholic Church and the Florida Parish Skeet and Gun Club. Marie loved to socialize and was also a member of the Amite Stem and Garden Club. She was an avid reader. After her vision weakened, she became a voracious audio book fan. The Louisiana State Library Books for the Blind became her magic carpet. She escaped the confines of her hospital bed and listened to tales of mystery, but was especially fond of history and politics. Despite her infirmities, she never lost her zest for life. She was devoted to her family and children. She is survived by her children, Michael William Irwin and Susan Lagsdin, Robert Grey Irwin and Jacqueline Shockley, Lynne Marie Vance and Charley Vance, Scott Patrick Irwin and Peggy Irwin, and Mary Elizabeth Chapman and Bryan Chapman; 10 grandchildren, Will Vance, Ben Vance and Brittany, Christopher Irwin, Billy Chapman and Liza, Sam Chapman, Rebecca Chapman, Laura Beth Chapman, Anna Chapman, Amelia Vetter and Michael, and Jeff Irwin; 3 great grandchildren, Hayes Vance, Henry Vance, and Emaleigh Irwin; brothers and sisters, Lucille Orzeske, Maggie Guidroz, Al Guillory and Jeanell, and Amy Robideaux; numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her husband, William K. “Bill” Irwin; father, Alcius Louis Guillory; mother, Isabelle Dardeau Guillory; three brothers, Raymond Guillory, Francis Guillory and Herbert Guillory. The family wishes to extend gratitude to all who have cared for her over the past few years. Visitation at St. Helena Catholic Church Hall on Thursday, December 13, 2018, from 9:30 AM until 11:30 AM. Betty Lou Simmons Guy

January 18, 1939 – December 06, 2018

A resident of Kentwood passed away on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at her home. She was born January 18, 1939 in Kentwood and was 79 years of age. She was an active member of Spring Creek Baptist Church and the local Garden Club. She was a substitute teacher at Jewel Sumner High School for several years and was a wonderful role model for all the staff and students she encountered. She was an avid seamstress and loved to crochet and make quilts. She enjoyed baking pies and cakes and writing letters to her friends and family. She loved her family and her church. She is survived by 3 sons, Marty Wayne Guy, Kentwood, Perry Gene Guy and wife, Tami Curtis Guy, Bay St. Louis, MS, and Boyd Glynn Guy and wife, Veronica Celeste Guy, Lafayette; 3 grandchildren, Chantal Guy Dale and husband, Timothy Dale, Denham Springs, Abigail Elizabeth Guy, Lafayette, Zachary Thomas Guy, Lafayette; great grandson, Alaric Dale; brother, Gene Simmons, Kentwood, special niece, Janet Simmons Pike. Preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Denmon Guy; parents, Boyd and Floy Simmons; nephew, Kevin Simmons; sister in law, Catherine Simmons. After a long, hard weekend, we had a busy day scheduled for today.  I just couldn’t manage to get The Prayer Link done this morning.  I beg your forgiveness.

Continue to pray for Mr. Jimmy Tolar who is still hospitalized in Baton Rouge.

 

 

Also, pray for Mrs. Betty Lou Guy who is at home in Spring Creek.

 

 

David had appointments for blood work and his procrit injection today.  Even though the blood level has dropped to 7.8, he was still able to get his injection today.   We’re scheduled to go back in one week.  In the meantime, David will be preparing tomorrow for the procedure the has scheduled for Wednesday.  Pray for David and me.

 

Dorothy Lorraine Diddon

July 10, 1951 – November 25, 2018

A resident of Kentwood passed away on Sunday, November 25, 2018 at St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington. She was born July 10, 1951 in Shreveport, LA and was 67 years of age. She is survived by her husband, Bobby Diddon; children, Dan Barnett and wife Lanette, Lorrie Hunt and husband Mark, Carl Barnett and Bridget, Jeffrey Barnett and wife Sandy, Kristene Jarell, Daniel Diddon, Theresa Kilgore and Gary, Elizabeth O’Brian, Donna Adams and husband Darrell, and David Diddon; 27 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers, Robert Jones, Frances Anderson and husband Robert, Tom Jones and wife Debbie, Anita Rachal and husband James, and Richard Strange; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mr. Elwood had already had his 99th birthday.  It’s not every day when you know two people of the age for Mr. Elwood and “Miss” Hannah and they pass away the same day.

 

Elwood Norman Courtney

Elwood, age 99, passed away in his home on Friday, November 23, 2018. He was a lifelong resident of Holden, LA. Elwood was a man that truly enjoyed the outdoors. He could be found hunting, fishing, or spending time in his garden. Elwood’s favorite place to be was home and he loved it even more if he was surrounded with family. He was very much a family man and loved spending time with all his kids.

Elwood was a wonderful father and loving Paw Paw who is already deeply missed.

Elwood is survived by his children, Bobby Courtney (Sadie), Janie Alford (Jimmy), Diane Duke (Kenny), Larry Courtney (Sharon), Margie Neal (Reggie), Iris Bankston (Terry); and grandchildren, Garry, Wade, Vonda, James Jr., Leesha, Shawn, Paul K., Paula, Angela, Krystal, Kassie, C.C., Kelly, and Cody; 25 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Ella Hortense Bookter “Maw Maw Tensie” Courtney; parents, William O. and Telliua Gill Courtney; daughter, Zada Lea Foster; sister, Margie Edeleston; and brothers, Norwood Courtney, Ivy Courtney, and Clinton Courtney.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation from the chapel of Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home, Hammond, on Sunday, November 25, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Visitation will continue Monday, November 26, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. until the funeral service at 1:30 p.m. Bro. This is the day Pine Ridge United Methodist Church has their monthly breakfast to benefit a family in need.  A delicious breakfast buffet will be available at 8 A.M.  We attended several years and always had more than enough time to get to our church for Sunday School at 9:15.

Many people will be traveling at the end of their Thanksgiving holidays.  Pray for safety and happy traveling with lots of new memories.  Personally, we have a son and his family driving home to Rome, GA. now and a granddaughter who will fly to Texas in the morning.  Everyone can add to this list the names of others who are traveling.

 

 

Today, I want to share four deaths with you so you can pray for the families.

  1. Mr. Elwood Courtney (98) of Holden

    passed away yesterday morning.  His arrangements are for Sunday night and Monday at Brandon Thompson Funeral Home in Hammond.  His obituary is not on their website yet.  Mr. Elwood was the father of David’s sister-in-law, Janie Alford.

  2. Wendell Travis Vernon

    September 12, 1941 – November 22, 2018

    Passed in peace Wendell Travis Vernon, age 77, went to be with the Lord on November 22, 2018. He was born on September 12, 1941 in Loranger, LA. The son of Albert and Ethel Vernon, who preceded him in death. He graduated from Loranger High School then proudly enlisted in the US Air Force shortly after, where he spent 7 years as an E5 Staff Sergeant. He was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Mae Robertson Vernon, on November 9, 1957 until she was called home on April 12, 1993. He was the loving father of their two daughters, his daughter, Wendy Holter, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Debbie Vernon; daughter, Cindy Wood and husband, Kimmy; granddaughters, Heather Blackwell-LaBure and April Usie; grandsons, David Holter and Travis Holter; and 5 great grandchildren. Wendell loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, and teaching them how to keep a perfectly manicured yard!     June 06, 1943 – November 22, 2018

    A resident of Kentwood, LA, passed away on Thursday, November 22, 2018 at home. He was born June 16, 1943 in New Orleans, LA and was 75 years of age. He is survived by 4 children, Charlotte Lee and husband, Tony, Daron Lebo, Charles Lebo, Jr. and wife, Erica, Lacey Joiner and husband, Brandon; grandchildren, Kody Sticker and wife, Rebecca, Jordan Lee, Kristen Lebo, Devin Lebo, Alexi Crosby and husband, Jace, Taylor Troulliet, granddaughters that were special caretakers, Hallie Royals and Jasmine Joiner; great grandchildren, Cayden Dylan Lebo, Dominick Mitchell, Jacie, Kiley and Tobin Crosby, Bentley Humphry, and Charles Alan Provstgaard. Hannah S. Schwartz

December 26, 1917 – November 23, 2018
A resident of Kentwood, LA, passed away on Friday, November 23, 2018 at her home. She was born December 26, 1917 in Englewood, NJ and was 100 years of age. She was a U.S. Navy nurse during World War II and was a retired public health nurse. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Kentwood. She is survived by 4 children, Charles E. Schwartz and wife, Kim, Kentwood, Richard A. Schwartz, Kentwood, Cathy Schwartz McGowan and husband, Billy, Covington and Hannah Irene Schwartz, Metairie;  grandchildren, Stacey Schwartz Smith and husband, Ed, Catherine Schwartz Doyle and husband, Jeff, Jana Schwartz Hughes and husband, Chris, Melissa Schwartz, Kelly Schwartz, and Kimberly Schwartz; great grandchildren, Christina Smith, Ray Smith, Trent Smith, Ella Doyle, Addison Doyle, Luke Hughes, George Hughes and Maggie Hughes. Mission Opportunities

  1. Stamped Christmas cards will be collected the first Sunday of December and delivered that week to prisoners in the Tangipahoa Parish jail.
  2. Gift cards are being collected for an Louisiana College student who received a partial scholarship from ladies of Two Rivers.  We want to send this before Christmas, so get those cards in soon.
  3. The Lottie Moon Tea will help the first Sunday at 2 P.M.  at East Fork Baptist Church.  Be sure this is on your calendar.
  4. The Children in Action will continue to meet on Wednesday nights at 6 P.M. and Youth on Mission on Sundays at 5 P.M. unless there are no church activities that night.

Estelle “MaMaw” Martino

December 19, 1925 – November 14, 2018

Estelle “MaMaw” Martino, 92, died November 14, 2018 peacefully at her home in Baton Rouge. Estelle was born on December 19, 1925 in Kentwood, LA to Fred and Lillie Easley. She was 1 of 13 children and she loved and enjoyed time with her family. She married Joseph Martino on July 13, 1947 and they raised one daughter, JoAnne Martino Guercio. Estelle was a decorated seamstress, avid sports fan, expert puzzle solver and crossword addict. Estelle is survived by her daughter, JoAnne, and son-in-law Greg along with 3 grandchildren, their significant others and 6 great-grandchildren; Jody and Sonya Guercio (Owen), Jeremy Guercio and Cristina Chavez (Kailyn and Keirstyn) and Ryan and Katy King (Radley, Emersyn and Landry). She also leaves behind her sisters, Joy and Beth, many nieces and nephews including Gerald and Patsy Hall and Gerry and Lisa Evans and life-long friends, Gail and Richard Westman. Estelle is preceded in death by her husband, Joe. We are sure they are dancing to their song, Blueberry Hill, after almost 20 years apart. FBC, Kentwood will be a drop-off cite for Operation Christmas Child from 4-6 P.M. today.  If you have more packing to do, please remember that Monday morning is the last time to drop off your boxes this year.

 

 

Yesterday, the people working the drop-off site across from Hammond High had some students go across the street to help move some cartons of shoeboxes.  One of the girls who helped told how she, in her home country, had received a “shoebox” when she was ten year old.  That stirred up some excitement and some future opportunities for the young lady.  What a “God wink”!

Darryl Bridges had a four wheeler accident.  Despite a number of broken bones, the doctors have decided he will not need surgery.  Pray for Darryl and his caregivers during the time when he will be wearing a brace and a sling.  He is hospitalized in New Orleans.

 

 

 

Jules Tanksley is still in Children’s Hospital of New Orleans.  She is doing well.  Pray for her and her family as the doctors make sure her heart is “good to go” to the Sixth Ward where she will live.  Thank God for her progress and for the medical staff who have given her such good care.

 

 

 

Robert Strickland is doing well following his recent nose surgery.

 

 

 

Pray for Phillip Strickland and his family.  Phillip and his mother have had a number of medical issues.

 

 

 

Linda Callihan will be traveling to MD Anderson every four months for follow-up visits.

 

 

 

Brian Tate is home again from Houston.

 

 

Buddy Morris is getting a break from his treatments.  He’s feeling pretty well.

 

 

Theople Hurst is doing well following her procedure.  She is working to regain her strength now.  Keep praying for her.

L.E. Toney

October 17, 1926 – November 13, 2018
L. E. TONEY, AGE 92

And a resident of Pine passed away early Tuesday morning November 13, 2018 at his home. He was retired after a career of over 40 years at the bag plant of the Bogalusa Paper Mill. During this time, L.E. also operated a successful dairy farm and later raised beef cattle. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Pine Missionary Baptist Church for 67 years while acting as the music leader for 65 years.

Visitation will be at Crain Funeral Home Wednesday November 14th from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm. Visitation will continue Thursday at Pine Missionary Baptist Church from 9:00 am until 11:00 am. A funeral service will be held in the church at 11:00 am Thursday with Eld. Adam Luper officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Pine Community Cemetery.

Newborn Jules Tanksley has had heart surgery is is doing well under the watchful care of the staff at Children’s Hospital of New Orleans.  Please continue to pray for the parents as they fight for good health for their baby.

 

 

Mrs. Theople Hurst will be having a pacemaker implanted Wednesday at St. Tammany in Covington.  Please pray for her.

Buddy Morris had a sudden new problem this week.  Pray for him and his family.

 

 

David is home from Ochsner where he spent the last week.  Because of a blood disorder, he blood was drawn numerous times a day.  The first thing David said this morning was that it was nice not to sleep without being disturbed.  While in Ochsner, numerous tests were done.  The final diagnosis is that the new problems are related to his MDS.  Today, he will have an injection, his fourth, of procrit at Ochsner on O’Neal.

 

 

Ann Hyde Ballard

February 11, 1933 – July 17, 2018

A resident of Roseland passed away on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was born February 11, 1933 in Chesbrough and was 85 years of age. Ann was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to all she knew. She began her career as a nurse and later went on to own and manage numerous family businesses. She is survived by her daughter, Renee Ballard Durio and husband, Russell; 2 sons, Jimmy Ballard and wife, Aimee, and Freddie Carl Ballard and wife, Pearl; 12 grandchildren, Rachel Ballard, Robert Ballard, Leslie Cuti, Trenton Ballard, Jennifer Davenport, Keri Thornton, Bryan Saint, James Ballard, Josh Ballard, Logan Ballard, Baylor Blanchard, and Emilee Edwards; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Bill Hyde and wife, Mary; sister-in-law, Sally Higgins. Preceded in death by husband, Freddie Ballard; parents, Charles and Ethel Hyde; 2 sisters, Rita Lea and Elizabeth Stevens; 2 brothers, Charles and Johnny Hyde. Operation Christmas Child Collection Week

Today is the first of eight days set aside to turn in the many “shoeboxes” that we have been lovingly packing during the past months.  You can check Samaritan’s Purse website for the location of a drop off site near you.  FBC, Kentwood will again serve as a collection site.  I am so thankful to say some friends at FBC, Kentwood will take over that responsibility so David and I can focus on his health this year.  Remember that each box not only has gifts, but also an opportunity to learn about Jesus.  It is estimated that each box will impact an average of seven people.  What an impact each box has.  What an opportunity for us “tell” children about Jesus!

 

 

 

It has been good to know The Prayer Link was missed on the days I didn’t get it published.  I only do the publishing from home.  It’s good to be back at home and doing one of may favorite things.

A resident of Kentwood passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at Tangi Pines Nursing Center in Amite. He was born January 26, 1933 in Kentwood and was 85 years of age. He was a U. S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War and a retired operator for Plantation Pipe Line. He is survived by his 2 sons, Douglas Prescott and wife, Cheryl, and Clinton Prescott; 9 grandchildren, Elisha Mayberry, Jamie Prescott, Will Prescott and wife, Angie, Mike Prescott, Whitney Prescott, Brittney Prescott, Sarah Prescott, Morgan Austin, and Wesley Austin; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Jack “Boots” Prescott and wife, Mary.
