The Silent Witness

Devotional for Sunday, August 14, 2011 by Allan Smith

Ezekiel 3:18-19 – When I say to a wicked man, “You will surely die,” and you do not warn him or speak out to dissuade him from his evil ways in order to save his life, that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood. But if you do warn the wicked man and he does not turn from his wickedness or from his evil ways, he will die for his sin; but you will have saved yourself. (NIV)

I often hear from Christians that they are satisfied to be just a silent witness. But is that enough?

Let’s listen in on a court case involving the questioning of a witness.

Clerk: Mr. Jones, please take the Bible in your right hand. Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?
Witness: Yes I do.
Attorney: Now, on the evening of the alleged crime, you were very close to the crime scene. Is that right, Mr. Jones?
Witness: Yes, sir, I was.
Attorney: And would you please describe to the court what you observed.
Witness: Well, I always take my dog for a walk in that area. I believe that it is important for upright citizens to walk their dogs regularly.
Attorney: True, Mr. Jones, but did you see anything of importance to this case?
Witness: Yes, but I’m not at liberty to share what I saw at this time.
Attorney: I see; you witnessed the crime and choose to remain silent about it?
Witness: Yes, that’s right.
Attorney: Then, you are of no use to this court. You may step down. My next witness, please!

It’s obvious from this court dialogue that the witness had valuable information for the case but was reluctant to share it.

If we are satisfied with just showing others around us what a good person we are, without sharing salvation through Jesus, I feel we miss the boat.

There are lots of unsaved people that we know who live good lives and serve their community well. But they are not required to share the gospel — we are.

Yes, we must exhibit a godly life in service to those around us and pray for the Holy Spirit to open their hearts. But let’s be sensitive to God’s leading and open our mouths to share Jesus with them. Let us not be silent witnesses.

Prayer: Father, many times, we reluctantly hold back from speaking to others about Jesus’ great salvation. We who have surrendered our lives to Him have the blessed assurance of heaven when we die; may we not keep it to ourselves. Holy Spirit, revive the desire in us to see souls saved so that their blood will not be on our hands. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

From one kingdom to another people,

Heart to Heart with Holley

Over fear into joy…

Rollercoaster photo by theerawat

I’m a child at an amusement park. The smell of cotton candy swirls around me. The laughter of other children is like a song in the air. The world is in motion and I stand completely still.

I’m staring at a rollercoaster.

Then I hear a voice beside me, “I’ll go with you.”

It’s my Daddy.

He slips his hand into mine.

We wait in line. I fidget. Run my fingers along the red, hard bars that lead us to the rollercoaster.

Then it’s time.

Up the first hill I hear that noise “click, click”all the way to the top.

I wonder if I’ve made a mistake.

I wish I could get off.

I grip the safety bar in front, knuckles flushed white with fear.

But then I look at my Daddy next to me.

The whole way to the top I say over and over something like, “It’s going to be okay. It’s going to be okay.”

He smiles.

And it is okay.

I’m more than fine when we get off.

I ride the rollercoaster again.

Then another.

And another.

Fear gives way to joy, to freedom, to the wind in my hair and the sun on my face.

As I drove last week, the “click, click” of worry in my mind, that exact memory rushed back to me, followed by this promise from my Heavenly Father…

Do not fear, for I am with you. Isaiah 41:10

Our security comes from the One who is with us.

The One who has promised not to leave us.

The One who has told us that whatever is ahead will somehow be worked out for good.

By the end of the last rollercoaster that day, I was raising my arms high until it seemed I could touch the pink and purple sky.

I pull into home and suddenly realize my heart doing the same.

Friday

“The thought of my pain and my homelessness is bitter poison.

I think of it constantly, and my spirit is depressed.

Yet hope returns when I remember this one thing:

The Lord’s unfailing love and mercy still continue,

fresh as the morning, as sure as the sunrise.

The Lord is all I have, so in him I put my hope.”

~Lamentations 3:19-26 TEV~

Robert Louis “Bob” Giesey
(August 20, 1928 – August 14, 2011)

He passed away August 14, 2011 in Amite, LA where he had been living in the past year. There will be a memorial service held at the First Presbyterian Church of Natchitoches on Thursday, August 18 at 2pm. There will be a visitation at the church after the service. His ashes will be scattered at a later date.

He was born and raised in Chicago, IL, playing football and other sports in high school and college. For a while, he was also signed on to the Green Bay Packers, but was later drafted and sent to Fort Polk, LA where he met and married his loving wife, Helen, in Leesville, LA. A week after their marriage, he was sent to Korea for 11 months; they always joked that they brought a photo of each other to the train station to ensure they’d recognize each other. Mr. Giesey worked at Valley Electric for 32 years. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge for many years including several leadership positions. He was a volunteer in the Natchitoches Civil Defense, and worked parttime with the local Sheriff’s department periodically. He never met a stranger and was loved by practically everyone who met him. His humor, bright smile, and sparkling eyes were well noted, even by nursing home staff in his last years.

Bob, aged 82, was very involved with his children’s lives. He supported his wife in forming the first Girl Scout troop at Parks Elementary School in the late 1960s, as well as assisting in activities like cook outs and camping trips. He also was a Webelo Scout Leader at Oak Grove Methodist Church in the early 1970s. Additionally, for several summers in that time frame, he coached Little League Baseball teams including All Stars. He created a fall season football clinic for elementary and jr. high school boys so that they could learn the fundamentals of the game—this also included having one game at the conclusion of the month-long clinic including being refereed by high school football players which was a big thrill for these boys—many local athletes of that day credited him with their success on their football teams in high school. He was a chaperone for the NCHS band during his daughter’s years there, and was an avid athletic supporter at NCHS for his son’s football and baseball teams.

Bob was also very active in the First Presbyterian Church. He served as a deacon for many years as well as the Sunday School superintendent for over 20 years. He participated in practically every event held at the church, including church dinners, cleanings, Bible school, greeter, lay assistant, Santa’s helper, and he created an informal worship service held before Sunday School during the 1970s that included singing old-time hymns.

Mr. Giesey was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Helen Kelly Giesey and his parents, Robert and Estelle Giesey.

He is survived by his daughter, Jacki Giesey, of Amite, LA; his son, Bill Giesey, and wife, Angela, of Cocoa, FL; and one grandson, Erik Giesey, of Cocoa, FL. He will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to either the First Presbyterian Church of Natchitoches or to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Jadon’s Story: A few pics and new therapy tools

A few pics and new therapy tools.

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 05:35 PM PDT

Well my mommy went back to work last week so we have been very busy. I’m doing great. I haven’t cried for her once. Right now I’m staying with my mimi and I just love her. My seizures have been about the same. We did increase my lamictal again but haven’t noticed any change. I’m on 20mg twice a day and we were hoping to see some improvement by now but we will see. My mommy did get me a new therapy toy. I’m trying to push behind things which is great but I’m too tall for the push toys. Well my Granny B bought a grocery cart. Mommy tried it out with me and then she went and bought me one. It is the perfect height for me. We put my mickey mouse in the seat and a bag of rice in the basket. The rice helps weight it down for me. I don’t like it that much but I can walk behind it. If you notice in the picture I’m taking a step with my right foot 🙂 So even though I don’t like it, it is great therapy for me. I haven’t heard from Detroit yet but as soon as I know something I will let you all know. I hope you enjoy the pictures of me playing in the mud. Can you tell how much I loved it 🙂 Mommy said its great sensory therapy too.
Continue to pray for the Lay Renewal at FBC, Kentwood this weekend.
Thanks for being there and ready to pray each day.  What a blessing you are to many people!
