A resident of Roseland, he died on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 23, 1924 in Pine Grove and was 88 years of age. He is survived by his 5 daughters, Barbara Morgan, Roseland, Becky Granger, Amite, Shirley Chadwick, Marie Horton and Rita Sandifer, all of Florida; 9 sons, James Wayne Granger, Missouri, Jack “Catfish” Granger, Jr., Amite, Floyd J. Louise Nystedt McMichael
(July 24, 1919 – December 5, 2013)

Louise Ann Nystedt McMichael left her earthly house for her eternal home on December 5, 2013, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born July 24, 1919, in St. Charles, Illinois and lived an amazing and blessed 94 years. A child during the depression, she graduated from Oak Park Illinois School of Nursing and went to San Francisco to receive post graduate orthopedic training at Shriner’s Hospital. While there she joined the US Navy as a nurse and was stationed during WWII in San Diego, California and Salt Lake City, Utah. There she met Navy Supply Officer, G. P. McMichael, Jr. whom she married in San Diego on December 31, 1945, at the conclusion of the war. Louise and Philip made their home on his family farm just south of Amite. She eventually returned to nursing at Lallie Kemp Hospital in Independence, LA retiring in 1995 after working in general patient care, the emergency room and the outpatient clinic. Louise, an active member of her church and her community, was a charter member of the Stem and Stamen Garden Club, PTA president, Cub Scout as well as Girl Scout leader, and a volunteer at God’s Storehouse. As a member of the First United Methodist Church for 67 years, she attended not only Sunday School and church services but circle meetings and Bible studies. Ladies’ groups DMA (Don’t Mention Age) and Brown Bag were part of her social life after retirement. She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip, her mother, Nina Tebell Nystedt, and her father, John Nystedt, a brother, Warren ”Bud” Nystedt and a sister, Ruth Nystedt Hamper as well as a brother-in –law, Robert McMichael, and sister-in-laws, Mary McMichael and Ora Belle Compton. Louise is survived by three children, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren with another one due in March. Her children are Susan Jenkins (Russell) of Amite, G.P. (Joy) of Pensacola, FL, and John (Rebecca) of Knoxville, TN. Her grandchildren are Rusty Jenkins (Mary), Robyn Jenkins-King (Mark), Phil McMichael (Rachel), Jessica Kastner (Mik), Chris McMichael (Manda), and Ryan McMichael (Richele). Her great-grand children are Russ and Jillian Jenkins, Avery, Sydney, Lydia and Emma McMichael. Also surviving her is her younger sister Norma McMichael, her sister-in-laws, Sarah Lou Wilson and Frieda Nystedt and eleven nieces and nephews, their children, and grandchildren. Visitation will be held Monday, December 9, 2013, from 9-11:30 A.M. at Amite First United Methodist Church, 800 N. Duncan Ave. Services conducted at 11:30 AM by Rev. David Melville. Burial in the Mulberry Street Cemetery. The family asks in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Building Fund at Amite First United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice. Albert S. Bishop

A resident of Amite, died at 11:22 p.m. on Sunday, December 1, 2013 at Hood Memorial Hospital in Amite. He was born April 21, 1925 in Hazlehurst, MS and was 88 years of age. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II where he served as a Paratrooper. He was a store manager with W. Walker Store which brought him to Amite and later was a salesman for Johnson-Cefalu Buick. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Amite where he served as a trustee and an usher. Survived by wife of 66 years, Mattie P. Bishop, Amite; daughter, Sally Bishop Sterling and husband, Ken, Fort Payne, AL; 2 grandsons, William Stanley Hand and wife, Angie and John David Hand; 3 great granddaughters, Mary Grace Hand, Anna Leigh Hand and Elizabeth Claire Hand; and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, Albert G. and Susie Noland Bishop; 3 brothers, William, Denon and Noland Bishop; 3 sisters, Beatrice Singletary, Joyce Ashley and Betty Lloyd; and son in law, Michael H. Grandmother of Renee Harrell, Treva Harrell Cutrer, Amy Harrell, Laura Harrell Giancola and Lillie Harrell Brooks. Great-Grandmother of Caroline Cutrer, Candace Cutrer, Madeline Cutrer, Cameron Cutrer, Jackson Brooks, James Brooks and Davis Brooks; brothers J. C. Newsom and Edward Newsom, Jr. Norma is preceded in death by her husband, Claiborne Harrell, Jr., parents Edward Newsom, Sr. and Frances Loflin Jordan, sisters, Evelyn Blomquist, Edwina Thomas and Jerrie Edwards. Dr. Stephen Odis Bryan
December 20, 1942 – November 28, 2013
Austin, Texas

Dr. Stephen Odis Bryan, 70 years old, of Austin, Texas, passed away Thursday, November 28, 2013, at Ochsner Medical Center in Baton Rouge. He was born on Sunday, December 20, 1942, in Madisonville, Louisiana. He was an electrical engineer who helped design radar systems for fighter jets before becoming a dentist. Dr. Bryan practiced dentistry in Kentwood, Louisiana for 20 years. He loved LSU football and was also an avid ham radio operator. Dr. Bryan was a devoted Christian and loving husband, father, and grandfather.
Surviving are his wife, Kathy McCormick Bryan; 2 daughters, Mary Turner and Anna Bryan-Borja; son, David Bryan; 2 sisters, Becky Joiner and Cathy Kahl; 2 grandchildren from Anna Bryan-Borja; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Odis and Catherine Davies Bryan.
Friends will be received at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond, Sunday, December 1, 2013 from 1:00 pm until
3:00 pm. A Memorial Service will begin in the funeral home chapel at 3:00 pm.

Lt. Commander Ronald Van Hoose, U.S. Navy (Retired) 

(December 12, 1935 – November 29, 2013)

He passed from this life at 3:10 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 2013 at Post Acute Specialty Hospital in Hammond, LA. He was born December 12, 1935 in Hamilton, OH and was 77 years of age. He was a former resident of Virginia Beach, VA and Donna, TX and a current resident of Amite, LA. He was a Retired Lt. Commander of the Armed Forces School of Music where he served as the Band Master. Survived by his wife, Patricia E. Van Hoose; 4 children, Sandy, Mark, David and Georgina Van Hoose; step-children, Raymond Diepenbrock, Scott Diepenbrock, Tina Taylor and Lance Diepenbrock; numerous grandchildren and 1 great-grandson; sister, Rose Krouse. Preceded in death by his daughter, Debra Van Hoose; parents, Chester and Hazel Van Hoose. Inurnment will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
