Today, I know we all have family and friends who have suffered great losses.  I’ll not begin to name them!  I will share only about one family.  They both had sickness for a while.  The damage of the week only compounded their current needs here on earth.  The family is Rev. Tommy (and Lois) Hicks.  As difficult as the last months have been, I am sure they would point you to God and his blessing for us both here on earth and eternally in heaven.

I will not name specific churches that have done so much, but I could.  Just be thankful for all they have done.

I will not name a specific individual who have given so much, but I could.  Just be thankful for all the individuals and all they have done (often working in or through a church or church program.)

Today, I want to you know there are MANY hurting people in Louisiana today.  This is the time when we can show the love of the Lord to them.  Those helping are not doing it for recognition.  Their names and faces will not be shown in the newspapers, on TV, or even in Facebook.  They are simply ministering in ways they are called.  I hope  you know some of these individuals and groups and will offer you prayers and contributions.  May God bless each on of them!

Today’s Devotional – “That Thing You Do”

  • Whether or now you can get out and gut homes, whether or not you can prepare meals or house people, whether or not you can be out serving as a chaplain, whether or not you can (fill in the blank as you desire), you can pray!

Thank-you so much for reading and praying.  If you are local and want to be part of our gathering at the cabin tonight at 6:30, please come.  We will pray!  You can come pray silently or aloud.  Prayer is so important!  If you cannot come, pray wherever you are.

Wednesday

Consider it pure joy,

my brothers and sisters,

whenever you face trials of many kinds,

because you know that

the testing of your faith produces perseverance.

Let perseverance finish its work

so that you may be mature and complete,

not lacking anything.

~James 1:2-4~

Once again, I must confess that I did not search for this verse today.  God provided it!

Sherman Cutrer fell over the week-end and broke his hip.  He will have surgery in McComb, possibly tomorrow.  Due to other health issues, this surgery will be more complicated.  Please continue to pray for him and his family.

Henry McKenzie will be having outpatient surgery tomorrow in McComb.  Pray for him.

David saw the retina specialist yesterday.  He said both eyes are improving.  We were so thankful to hear that.  Please pray for continued healing.

Frances Gay was also in Covington yesterday.  Her tests indicated the ulcer is healed.  Thank God for this good report.

Justin and Becky Tanner Nowell’s daughter, Carrie, had surgery to repair a hole in her heart.  All went well yesterday.  Pray for a good recovery and a healthy future for Carrie Nowell.

Harrell Sharkey is still at home and improving.  The family is so thankful for all the prayers on his behalf.

Brian Piner’s mother, Delores, passed away.  Please be in prayer for the Piner family.

Children in Action and Mission Friends will meet from 6-7 P.M. tonight.

Highway 51 is closed in the Roseland-Amite area due to a water leak.  Think your travel plans through before heading that way.

New Covenant Baptist Church in Denham Springs will house the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief work in that area just as The Lord’s Church is the one for our association.

Disaster Relief would appreciate prayers, volunteers, and donations.  They had a good day yesterday working to gut houses that had water damage.

We WILL have the Third Thursday Gathering at the cabin tomorrow at 6:30.  I think we have much to THANK God for this week.

I am so thankful to see how many of the area churches are helping others in these difficult post-flood days.  I know God loves seeing His people help others in so many ways.

Tuesday

He heals the brokenhearted

and binds up their wounds.

~Psalm 147:3~

How appropriate!  God knew the need was going to be in southeast LA when He directed this verse be the one to be shared today!  Only God!!!

The need continues for prayer, donations, and volunteers.  Get involved with a trained,  experienced group.  Be helpful, but be safe.

These two groups are working through the facilities at The Lord’s Church.  Drop by to volunteer or to sign  up.

We all can be the “light” during these days of natural disaster.  Let you light shine!  Thanks to all the area churches and other organizations who are letting their lights shine for Jesus!

Monday

May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father,

who loved us and by his grace

gave us eternal encouragement and good hope,

 encourage your hearts

and strengthen you in every good deed and word.

  ~2 Thessalonians 2:16-17~

Pray for the Muse Family.  Eddie Passed away.  His wake will be Tuesday night at McKneely Funeral Home in Kentwood and Wednesday at Pine Ridge.

Pray for all the families who are dealing with loss due to the flooding.  Join in and help in any way you can.

The Baptist Associations of Southeast Louisiana will begin work to help those who had flood damage.  Applications for assistance will be take beginning today at The Lord’s Church on Highway 440.  Volunteers can also report there to learn how they can help others.  Volunteers need to be at least 16 years of age.  Donations of water, cleaning supplies, etc. can be dropped off at the church.  Donations of money will be greatly appreciated.  The donations can be given there or sent to the main office (BASELA, PO Box 581, Franklinton, LA 70438).  David and I were blessed to have been at the meeting and to see all those who are available to help for as long as it takes. You can contact someone at The Lord’s Church to see how you can help.  There are many ways to help which meals there is something for almost everyone to do.  Let’s help our neighbors who have been flooded over the past few days.  Help from out-of-state is preparing to join us in a day or two.  Volunteers will be needed for whatever time and whatever day you are available.

Sunday

May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father,

and good hope,

and strengthen you in every good deed and word.

~2 Thessalonians 2:16-17~

(Once again, I did not look for this Scripture.  It came to me on a day when “encouragement is definitely the word we need.)

I’ve see the television reports, looked at pictures on the internet, and talked with relatives who are trapped in upper levels of homes.  It’s not happy, but it is real.  Let’s offer words and actions to help those who need so much at this time.  Let’s also remember that more than food, clothing, and shelter, people need Jesus.  Let’s make sure we do our part to be “On Mission” right here.  Some people/churches seem to have been busy doing so even while the first rain was falling, but many are lagging at this point.  Let’s not waste this opportunity.

Bro. Don Meadows and The Lord’s Church will host a disaster relief meeting at 2 P.M. today.  Be there to learn how you can help.  In the meantime, you might want to gather some of these supplies: Diapers, Bottled Water, Food, Cleaning Supplies, Linens
Blankets, Paper products, Individual Bottles of Gatorade.  You can deliver them to The Lord’s Church.

Pray for Martha and Joe Drago.  He was admitted to Hood Memorial and transferred to North Oaks during the heavy rains we have had.  Pray for them and others who are facing medical needs in addition to weather related needs.

Once again, remember our first responders, medical workers, electrical workers. telephone repairmen, etc. who have been out and working while most people have been home and dry.

Schools will be closed again Monday.  I’m sure that will be the case in some neighboring parishes too.  Stay updated!

Realize that even though the water in your area has receded, there may be road damage, trees down, etc.  Take your time and be careful if you must get out.

Wednesday

A person’s wisdom yields patience;

it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense.

~Proverbs 19:11~

Tricia Doss had foot surgery.  Pray for a good healing period and a healthier foot.

Mrs. Bessie Hayden did not have surgery as planned today.  The doctor told her it will be best to have laser surgery in one eye and nothing in the other one.  Keep praying for her improved vision.

Harrell Sharkey still is on oxygen and have lots of PT ahead.  Keep him in your prayers.

Mrs. Mimi Sneed  called yesterday to request prayer for her son, Bobby.  His health has not been good for a while.

By noon today, David and I will have had five appointments so far this week.  His surgery yesterday went well, but the eye has a patch on it until the doctor removes the patch this morning.  Hopefully, David’s vision in that eye will go from all fuzzy to clear.  Pray for some vision in his left eye.

It’s my favorite night of the week – Children’s Missions!  Boys and girls from age 3-grade 5 are welcome to meet with us from 6-7 P.M.  Among other things, we will be signing a birthday card for a MK.  For you adults who don’t know, MK means missionary kid.  We’lll also pray for him as he helps his parents in their ministry.

Thanks to people who have already said they want to help collect shoe boxes from other churches.  You will be an important link is getting area shoeboxes to children all around the world.

Do you remember the song “Love and marriage, the go together like a horse and carriage”?  With the prayer link, we might say “read and pray”.  They go together in the same way.

Sunday

And when you stand praying,

if you hold anything against anyone,

forgive them,

so that your Father in heaven

may forgive you your sins.”

~Mark 11:25~

Mrs. Mary Varnado continues to see her doctor and is working to get better.  Please continue to pray for her.

Friday

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this:

While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Andy Taylor‘s eye procedure has enabled him to see better.  Join them in thanking God.

Bro. Joey and I met a lady who represents Samaritan’s Purse in our area.  FBC, Kentwood has been asked to become a collection site for “shoeboxes” in November.  Lots of volunteers will be needed to man this operation for eight days.  We are presently looking at three hour time slots plus others to provide cookies, coffee, etc.  If you would be interested in committing to service this way in November, please let Bro. Joey or me know as soon as possible.

“Roselyn and a Picture Book” – (Operation Christmas Child) – https://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/shoebox-stories-roselyn-and-a-picture-book/

Yesterday, I had a visit from a neighbor/friend.  She brought some items for my church to include in the “shoeboxes” we are sending.  She had done this for a few years.  She blesses my heart and the heart of some little children somewhere each year.  As she left, she asked me to call her to tell her what else we could use. She is a ray of sunshine and brings “Joy” to many hearts!

If you would like to help too, ask me what we need a few more  of.  I carry the list in my purse.  You could be an instrument of God’s love to some children this year.
