THE GREATEST LAWYER

The story is told of a lawyer named Strange who died.  His friend asked the tombstone maker to inscribe on his tombstone,  “Here lies Strange, an honest man, and a lawyer.”  The inscriber insisted that such an inscription would be confusing, for passersby would tend to think that three men were buried under the stone.

However he suggested an alternative: He would inscribe, “Here lies a man who was both honest and a lawyer.”  That way, whenever anyone walked by the tombstone and read it, they would be certain to remark: “That’s Strange!”

Lawyers don’t seem to be seen in a very positive light (though we have no hesitancy about turning to one in times of need!).  Perhaps it is true that a few “bad apples” have given a black eye to the lawyer profession.  But that could be said of many other professions (including preachers).

Jesus had some rather harsh thing to say about the lawyers of his day (Luke 11:46,52), but they were not lawyers in the sense we understand the word; rather, they were “experts” in the Jewish law.

The truth is, lawyers perform a valuable service to our society, providing an advocate for those unable to speak for themselves.  And Jesus is himself referred to in scripture as a lawyer!

“My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin.  And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” (I John 2:1)

The Greek word translated “advocate” means “one who pleads another’s cause before a judge, a pleader, counsel for defense.”  That means Jesus is our defense attorney!  As Christians stand before God to be judged for the sins we have committed, it is Jesus Christ who presents our defense.  What comfort and assurance in that truth!

Praise be to God for providing us such a capable attorney!

Harold Joseph Hatch Wall

(January 22, 1921 – February 15, 2011)

Harold Joseph Hatch Wall was born January 22, 1921 and passed away at 9:10 p.m., Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond. He was 90, a native of Baton Rouge and a resident of Bogalusa.

Mr. Harold is survived by his wife, Laura Cooper Wall, Bogalusa; daughter, Suzonne Wied and husband Bob, Canandaigua, NY; 2 sons, Harold Quave, Jr. and wife Sharon, Angie and William Lloyd Quave and wife Connie, Bogalusa; 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; also survived by 2 daughters Dana Carmichael and husband Bill, Lafayette and Veda Laine Barry, Sulphur; son, H. Kent Wall, Memphis, TN; 7 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his parents, 1st wife, Alice Goff and a sister, Elizabeth Smith.

Private funeral services will be held at a later date.

Phyllis Hughes Alford
(December 15, 1919 – February 17, 2011)

A native and long time resident of Roseland, she entered into eternal rest surrounded by her daughter and son-in-law at North Oaks Medical Center on February 17, 2011 at the age of 91. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Staff Sergeant Hollis M. Alford who was killed in World War II; her second husband, William “Bill” Alford; her mother, Julia S. Hughes; father, Thomas Gordon Hughes; brother, John “Jack” Hughes. She is survived and will be greatly missed by her only daughter, Mary Lou Alford Caceres and son-in-law, Isidro Pierre Caceres, Terrytown; grandchildren, Simone Caceres Ponish, Roseland, Kirk Caceres, Mobile, AL and Keith Caceres, Terrytown. She leaves behind two beautiful great-granddaughters, Coral-Lyn Ponish, Los Angeles, CA and Gabrielle Caceres, Harahan. Visitation at McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, from 9 a.m. until religious services at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 26, 2011. Services conducted by Rev. Gaylord Dodgen and Pastor Jeff McKneely. Interment Arcola-Roseland Cemetery, Arcola.

  • Jimmy Schwartz is home from North Oaks.

  • J. D. Smith is home and being monitored for future problems like he had Sunday.

  • Mrs. Kathryn Sanders is to come home from rehab today.

Baby Elias (MK) will have a appointment with the pediatric cardiologist to undergo a heart test.  The doctor wants to see the brothers too to determine if there is a genetic problem.  Pray for the family as their future work situation may have to be changed to accommodate Elias and his needs.

Abigail’s grandmother just called to say that she will probably be in the hospital for about a month.
They are trying to find a formula that she can tolerate. There are some complications that she didn’t go into.

AS CONGREGATIONS, WE have tried about everything…

…meetings, lectures, Vacation Bible Schools, “Operation Doorbell,” city-wide

campaigns, television and radio programs, bus ministries, building buildings,

and hiring preachers with sex-appeal.  Some have even followed cultic schemes

of “discipling” and instituted unscriptural tactics of evangelism.  Many have

thought that growth comes naturally, or that, through the employment of slick

media methods or “get if for you wholesale” tactics, the noble purpose of the

Lord could be realized.  Now the time has come, having tried every modern

method known to man and having imitated the “numbers-mad” denominations,

to read the Lord’s instructions!  “When all else fails,” they said, “read the

instructions!”

Here comes our Lord giving us the very specific and powerful means to

penetrate the world: 13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses

its

flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown



out and trampled underfoot by men. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city


that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it



under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.



16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and



glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5.13-16).

Jesus considered the way to penetrate the world was with light and salt.  These

two avenues, He says, are a demonstration of the most powerful and overwhelming

arguments for Truth: a good life, a life full of good works.  Good Christians, living a

good life and doing good works before men, penetrate the world!  Along with this,

someone has said that there are five powerful things in the world.  The fifth most

powerful thing is an idea.  The fourth most powerful thing is an idea that is true.

The third most powerful thing is the truth of God’s Word.  The second most powerful

thing is the truth of God believed.  But the most powerful thing in the world is the

truth of the Living God believed and put into practice!

For too long, we have been salting ourselves.  We have been lighting the church.

The Lord says salt and light are no good unless they get out into society, into the

world, where lost men and women live and die.  Salt penetrates the food, preserves

the food.  Light penetrates the darkness.  Leaven penetrates the bread to make it

rise and good to eat.

This is our Lord’s way of telling us that every member of the body of Christ is to be

involved in soul-winning, penetrating the world.  We can all live good lives.  We can

all do good works before men so that they can glorify and know our Father in heaven.

He calls us all, not only to be busy doing something, but to be busy being

Tuesday Afternoon

Pray for Kirstie Birch, daughter of Bill and Sharon Birch.  Kirstie is having a heart procedure at Lakeview Hospital Friday morning.

As you pray for the Brister family, say special prayers for Gail who has had a virus.  She had to make a trip to the ER yesterday evening.

The “Third Thursday Meeting at the Cabin” will be this week.  Hopefully, some of you will be able to come join us at 6:30.  We would love to have you.

Mr. Wenous Goings is being admitted to North Oaks for tests on his heart.   Please be in prayer for him.

I had a good workout on my right arm today.  I will continue at home for two weeks and go back for another evaluation.  I want all the usage I can get in that arm!

It looks like we are going to have another beautiful day.  I’m planning to celebrate with my last day of physical therapy for my broken arm which is healing nicely.  I will have a little more therapy to do at home to have the return of the full range of movement.  I thank God for this beautiful day and the great improvement in my arm!

A MAN FELL into a pit and couldn’t get himself out…

A subjective person came along and said, “I feel for you down there.”

An objective person came along and said, “It’s logical that someone would fall down there.”

A Pharisee came along and said, “Only bad people fall into pits.”

A mathematician came along and calculated how deep the pit was.

A news reporter came along and asked for the exclusive story on the pit.

An IRS agent came along and asked if the man was paying taxes on the pit.

  1. Mrs. Annie Belle Harrell may come home tomorrow afternoon if all continues to go well with her.
  2. Mrs. Kathryn Sanders may come home Thursday if all continues to go well with her.

I’m so thankful God has allowed these ladies to get better and return home.  Thank-you for praying.  I know they are both very thankful for you!
