Leroy Stringfield Obituary

STRINGFIELD, Leroy Pelham, 89, passed away on October 15, 2024 and entered his eternal heavenly home. Dr. Stringfield was preceded in death by his parents, Milton and Dixie Stringfield; two brothers, W.A. Stringfield and Milton James Stringfield. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Betty Joyce Smith; two sons, Craig Stringfield (Mindy) and Kevin Stringfield; two granddaughters, Brittany Braswell (Chris) and Lydia Copeland (Ty); five great-grandchildren; two siblings, Peggy Alford and Polly Stringfield; extended family and friends.
Rev. Stringfield was a retired ordained minister and a professional educator whose career began when he became a college student in 1953. He earned his bachelor’s degree in education at L.S.U., his masters and doctors degree at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, and another masters degree in education from the University of Alabama. His pastoral experience began as a college summer missionary in 1956, when he became the first pastor of the First Baptist Church of Sitka, Alaska, to which he and his wife returned in 2006 to help lead the 50th anniversary celebration. Rev. Stringfield was pastor/church staff of churches in Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and Alabama. He served as professor of religion, philosophy and sociology for 15 years at Judson College in Marion, Alabama. Dr. Stringfield spent his last years after formal retirement in active teaching and senior adult ministries in the First Baptist Church of Prattville.
Funeral service will be on Sunday, October 20, 2024 at 3:00 pm from First Baptist Church of Prattville with Dr. Travis Coleman officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one-hour prior to service. Burial will follow at Prattville Memory Gardens with Prattville Memorial directing. Pallbearers will be Chris Braswell, Ty Copeland, Harold Hammond, Mack Monk, Jason Hamm and Dalton Hamm. Honorary Pallbearer: Gene Champion. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his honor to the missions fund of First Baptist Church of Prattville or to one’s favorite charity.
