Ruby Katheryn Frey Carley Thompson
(January 21, 1922 – February 6, 2014)
“Miss Ruby”, Ruby Frey (Carley) Thompson, a lifelong resident of Amite, died at 1:15 a.m. on Thursday morning at North Oaks Medical Center after suffering a stroke at her home on Duncan Avenue. She was 92. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eva Doughty Frey and Samuel Douglas Frey, her husband, Robert Y. (Bobby) Thompson, Jr., and two brothers, Robert Lee Frey and Samuel Douglas Frey, Jr. She is survived by a sister, Eva Mae Frey Morris of Hillsdale; four sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald G. and Brenda Carley of Fairhope, AL, John Robert and Karen Thompson of Ponchatoula, Samuel James and Nancy Thompson of Tickfaw, and Robert Young Thompson III of Amite; eight grandchildren, David W. Carley of Baton Rouge, Kevin W. Carley of Mobile, AL, Kristen Elizabeth Taylor Murray of Ponchatoula, James Michael Thompson of Golden Valley, AZ, Robert Brandon Thompson of Sanford, NC, John Carl Thompson of Amite, Bradley Young Thompson of Amite, and Kevin Paul Thompson of Amite; eight great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren, and hundreds of former students and piano students she has taught over the past 70 years. Miss Ruby was a graduate of Amite High School, Southeastern Louisiana University, and Louisiana State University. She taught school in Kentwood, Spring Creek, Chesbrough, Amite and at Oak Forest Academy, where she also served as principal. She served as Choir Director or Organist first at the Amite Methodist Church and later at the Amite Southern Methodist Church for over 60 years, continuing into her 90’s, including last Sunday. She was a longtime member of the UDC, and the DAR (over 50 years), and a member of the Southern Methodist Church of Amite. An accomplished pianist, “Miss Ruby” has performed in many local events, accompanying local talent in a wide variety of events for years. A resident of Wilmer, lost his battle with Lung Cancer at 8 a.m. on Thursday, February 6, 2014 in Ponchatoula. He was born January 13, 1948 in Clinton and was 66 years of age. Survived by wife of 30 years, Jackie Worley, Wilmer; 6 children, Connie Manuel and husband, John, Jackson, LA, Jerry Worley and wife, Dianne, Yazoo, MS, Elsie Worley, Mantachie, MS, Ruby Newcomb and husband, Alan, Mantachie, MS, Charley Worley and wife, Ashley, Hammond, Jessica Poole and husband, Nick, Ponchatoula; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ellis Worley. A resident of Baton Rouge, she passed away peacefully at 5:50 p.m. on Thursday, February 6, 2014 at her home. She was born June 2, 1934 in Greensburg and was 79 years of age. She loved the Lord and was a member of Magnolia Christian Assembly and Seventh Day Adventist Church. She was a retired LPN from the State of Louisiana. She loved to sing, cook and bring meals to family and friends. Family and friends were very special to her. Survived by 1 son, Tommy Wren and wife, Shivonne, Baton Rouge; 3 grandchildren, Anna Wren Allen and husband, Del, Mallory Wren Morgan and husband, Lyle David and John Paul Wren; 4 great grandchildren; 1 sister, Marie Foster, Greensburg. He went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at 8:15 p.m. He was a native of Mars Hills, MS. He was preceded in death by his wife, Chequita Davis; mother, Ruby Mote; father, Morris Davis and grandchild, Sabryn Colona.
