Doctors were working to control Sim Bankston‘s pain following colon surgery. Pray for his recovery to go well.  He should be in the hospital about four more days.

Wanda Cage developed an infection and did not get to come home yet.  Pray the infection is cleared up quickly.

Pray for students at they take the written portion of their LEAP/GEE tests today.  This is new, but should allow scores to be returned quicker than usual.  The multiple choice portion of the test will be the week of April 12th.

Please continue to pray for Trisha Wilson and others in Texas as they have afternoon Bible Clubs and for Trisha as she plans to make another mission trip to the Ukraine.

Larkin Dorris

Update from Larkin’s Aunt BeBe (who is in Memphis now)…

Mommee and I are having a wonderful time in Memphis with Larkin and Scott.  We arrived Saturday afternoon after a road trip that seemed to fly by (not because of my driving!) due to all the catching up that Mommee and I were able to do.  Larkin and Scott greeted us with big smiles and warm hugs, and then we were off to St. Jude to pick up a prescription for Larkin and visit the Gift Shop (Larkin knows her Aunt BeBe!!).  We found some great stuff at the Gift Shop including matching “Hope” necklaces for Larkin and I.  When we got back to the apartment Larkin showed Mommee and I all of the pretty pictures she has drawn, and Mommee read to Larkin from a story book that her good friend Mrs. Becky Watson sent Larkin.  After dinner we played many rounds of Apples to Apples then Larkin drew us more pretty pictures in her fashion design notebook.

Today we went to St. Jude around 8:45 a.m. for Larkin to do her lab work and get her “G” medicine.  We were all very happy to hear that Larkin’s counts were up a bit.  She also was given platelets.  When we got back from St. Jude, we ate some of Scott’s yummy left over turkey spagetti.  Then, Mommee, Larkin and I played a neat game called Shut the Box and Bunco (for kids) while Scott went to the grocery store.  Later, Mommee showed Larkin how to crossstitch and Larkin and BeBe did some online shopping.  For dinner, Larkin and Scott prepared a delicious meal consisting of baked tilapia over rice, baked zuccini, and cooked carrots (I actually ate cooked carrots which I normally cannot stand….Scott and Larkin are great cooks!!!!).  We are now all relaxing in the den and about to play another game or two.

Mommee and I will be heading home in the morning about the time Scott and Larkin head to St. Jude for her day’s appointments.  Kelly will be heading back to Memphis tomorrow.  Once Kelly arrives back, Scott will head home to stay with Mckenzie for the next couple of weeks.

CAN YOU GIVE A PUSH?

A man is in bed with his wife when there is knocking on the door.  He rolls over and looks at his clock.  It’s half past three in the morning.

“I’m not getting out of bed at this time,” he thinks, and rolls over.

Then, a louder knock follows.  “Aren’t you going to answer that?” says his wife.

So he drags himself out of bed, and goes downstairs. He opens the door and there is a man standing at the door.  It doesn’t take the homeowner long to realize the man is drunk.

“Hi there,” slurs the stranger, “Can you give me a push?”

“No, get lost, it’s half past three.  I was in bed,” says the man and slams the door.

He goes back up to bed and tells his wife what happened and she says “Dave, that wasn’t very nice of you.  Remember that night we broke down in the pouring rain on the way to pick the kids up from the baby-sitter and you had to knock on that man’s house to get us started again?  What would have happened if he’d told us to get lost?”

“But the guy was drunk,” says the husband.

“It doesn’t matter,” says the wife. “He needs our help and it would be the Christian thing to help him.”

So the husband gets out of bed again, gets dressed, and goes downstairs. He opens the door, and not being able to see the stranger anywhere he shouts, “Hey, do you still want a push?” and he hears a voice cry out, “Yeah, please!”

Still being unable to see the stranger, he shouts:  “Where are you?”

The stranger replies:  “I’m over here, on your swing.”

There are times we all need a little push from one another.  In fact, that’s one of the reasons that we gather together in worship.  We could praise God alone, but we have the opportunity to encourage one another every time we meet together.

“And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Heb. 10:24-25)

It’s not just reserved for Sundays, though.  Know anybody that needs a push today?

I just learned a KHS senior was killed in a car wreck.  Her name was Ebony Williams. She was in the library after school Friday to return a calculator she found in Mrs. Brabham’s room.  Please pray for her family and her classmates.

We just got back from Children’s Hospital and received some very wonderful news. His extra rib is growing, but it is growing in the right direction. The direction that it is growing in is an outward way instead of the inward way. Which means instead of taking the rib, they would only shave the little piece off if it started to bother him.

Sudie Rimes Phillips
(September 30, 1925 – March 19, 2010)

Sudie Rimes Phillips a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother and sister was born September 30, 1925 and passed away at 9:30 a.m., Friday, March 19, 2010 at North Oaks Hospital, Hammond. She was 84, a native and resident of Kentwood.

Mrs. Sudie is survived by her 4 daughters, Ginger Travis and husband, Tommy, Kentwood; Kathy Harrell and husband, Bruce, Kentwood; Marcia Vogler and husband, Rick, Mandeville and Janet Meyer and husband, Jimmy, Hammond; 2 sons, Adrian Phillips and wife, Lauree, Kentwood and Dennis Phillips and wife, Cindy, Kentwood; 1 brother, Clyde Rimes and wife, Iola, Garland, TX; 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Lea Phillips, Jr. her parents, Samuel and Smythie Dykes Rimes; 1 sons, Clyde Lea Phillips, Jr., granddaughter, Cheryl Phillips; a grandson, Davy Travis; 3 sisters and 4 brothers.

Margaret Anderson Miller
(April 8, 1918 – March 19, 2010)

A resident of Hillsdale, she died at 5:07 a.m. on Friday, March 19, 2010 at St. Helena Parish Nursing Home in Greensburg. She was born April 8, 1918 in Lucian, MS and was 91 years of age. Visitation at McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Sunday and at Hillsdale Baptist Church, Hillsdale, from 9 a.m. until religious services at 11 a.m. on Monday. Services conducted by Rev. Darryl Miller. Interment Hillsdale Cemetery, Hillsdale. She is survived by her daughter, Joann Hartner, Greensburg; 2 sons, Alvin Miller, Belton, TX and Glenn Miller, Roseland; 2 sisters, Leona Settone, Baton Rouge and Betty Carter, Greensburg; 8 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivy A. Miller; parents, James and Florence Anderson; 3 brothers, J.C., Bill and Ed Anderson; 5 sisters, Amanda Saint, Nell Anderson, Myrtle Dreher, Catherine Anderson and Lillie Henderson. A native and resident of Independence died on Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge at the age of 83 years. Visitation at Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church, Independence, from 11 a.m. on Friday until religious services at 12 Noon Friday. Services conducted by Fr. Howard Adkins. Interment Colonial Mausoleum, Independence. Survived by sister, Virginia G. Henderson and her husband, Buddy, Prairieville, 3 brothers, Sam Guzzardo and his wife, Jennie, Baton Rouge, Guy Guzzardo, Baton Rouge, Mike Guzzardo and his wife, Virginia, Tickfaw, sister-in-law, Phenie Guzzardo, step-daughter, Barbara L. Navarra and her husband, Roy, Independence. Preceded in death by husband, John Levatino, parents, John and Maggie Guzzardo, brother, Joe Guzzardo, sister-in-law, June Guzzardo.

Darrell Joseph Cuti
(May 26, 1981 – March 17, 2010)

Darrell Joseph Cuti was born May 26, 1981 and passed away at 12:25 p.m., Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at his residence. He was 28, a native of Jackson, MS and a resident of Amite.

Darrell is survived by his mother, Rickie C. Mullendore and husband, Paul, Amite; 2 sisters, Donna C. Kelsey and husband, Brennan, Amite and Marcy Cutrer and husband, Brian, Amite; 2 nieces, Kayla Kelsey and Nicole Cutrer both of Amite; 3 nephews, Brennan Kelsey, Bray Cutrer, and Keegan Kelsey all of Amite; grandmother, Mrs. Marcelle Cuti, Amite; step-sister, Lynette Edwards and husband, Keith, Wilmer; step-nieces and nephews, Allison, Elizabeth and Russell Edwards of Wilmer; and numerous aunts and uncles of who loved him dearly.

Preceded in death by his father, Salvador Cuti, Jr.; twin brother, Darren Cuti; grandfather, Sam Cuti; grandmother, Verdie Duncan; and cousin, Christopher Coon.

Cheryl Hughes Green reports that her sister, Linda, is at their parent’s home and recovering from her surgery.  John Green is also recovering well from his dental surgery.

Mr. Billy Brabham will be undergoing more tests and beginning treatment next week.  Please keep him and his family in your prayers.

This is the day Jameson Parrino’s surgery has been rescheduled for.  Pray for all to go well and for the surgery to help him feel better after his recovery period.

Nunzio Joseph Ruffino
(August 3, 1926 – March 16, 2010)

Nunzio Joseph Ruffino was born on August 3, 1926 and passed away on March 16, 2010. He is survived by his wife, Josephine Arnone Ruffino, Amite; a daughter, Rose Ruffino, Amite, his son, Louis Ruffino and his wife, Glenda, Hammond; a brother, Louis Ruffino and his wife, Josie, Baton Rouge; a sister, Mary Checchin, Chicago, IL; four grandchildren, Courtney Putnam and her husband, Alan, Florence, TX, Brett Ruffino and his wife, Michele, Longview, TX, Carrie Smith and her husband, Drew, Canton, GA and Blake Ruffino, Hammond, LA; and his four great grandchildren, Andrew and Addison Smith, Morgan Ruffino and Wyatt Putnam. He is preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Loretta Ruffino, 4 brothers, John, Tony, Joe and Sam, and as well as 5 sisters Rose, Pamella, Lucy, Josie, and Stella. As a young man, Nunzio enlisted in the Army serving mainly in the Philippine Islands and was honorably discharged in the mid 1940’s. After returning home from the Army, Nunzio returned to the family farm whereby he quickly became known as a major farmer of strawberries and peppers. Nunzio was a tireless worker in everything that he did. From the family farm, to the local business that he and his wife ran in downtown Amite for 20+ years, to the “inventory manager” at his son’s Ruffino Auto Supply in Roseland in the mid 1980’s. As time passed, Nunzio’s will power continued to get stronger and he just never quit working. A crutch under one arm and a rake in the other, Nunzio worked tirelessly on his most prized possession, his yard. He was honored on multiple occasions with the monthly “Garden of the Month” which he cherished. As the years have past, forcing Nunzio inside, he had to become more dependant on others to assist him. No one did this better than his beloved wife Josephine and his favorite “men”: The Amite City Fire Department. The Ruffino family wants to send it’s deepest appreciation for the Amite City Fire Department for the compassion they’ve shown to take care of our “POP”: Nunzio Joseph Ruffino. The family would also like to send it’s deepest appreciation to all of the Home Health Nurses, Dr. Malik Spady, Dr. Susan Zaccharia, and a special thanks to Dr. Judd Patton of Mary Bird Perkins in Baton Rouge. You took care of him and we can’t thank you enough. God Bless you “POP” and don’t worry, we’ll take care of your yard! I PLAYED FOOTBALL in college…

I wasn’t very big–only 150 pounds–and I wasn’t very good.  I got hurt a lot.  I broke my arm once, my neck once, and my nose six times.

When I tell people about it, they always ask me, “Why did you keep doing it?”

For the longest time I had no answer.

Then one day it hit me.  If there hadn’t been any fans in the stands cheering me on–my family and friends–I wouldn’t have kept playing and trying so hard.  But there were, so I did.  Tom Malone, former President and COO of Milliken and Company

Evelyn Whitley McDaniel
(March 4, 1924 – March 15, 2010)

Evelyn Whitley McDaniel moved to her heavenly home at 10:25 p.m. on March 15, 2010 at the age of 86. A native of Jackson, MS and a resident of Kentwood, LA, she was a member of East Fork Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Malone Williams of Kentwood, LA, son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Joyce McDaniel of Denham Springs, LA, 3 granddaughters, Leann Lindsey and husband, Jerry, Lida Marie McDaniel and Neil Bullock, and Rebecca McDaniel, and great-grandchildren, Brady and Anna Lindsey, Donovan Bullock, and Zoey McDaniel. She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert K. McDaniel, Jr., parents, Joseph and Ethel Whitley, a daughter Byrl Katherine McDaniel, and son William David “Bill” McDaniel, brothers John, Elmo, Holle, and Eric Whitley, sisters Wilma Sanderson, Ethel Brown, Lillie Oaks, and Margaret Whitley.
