Mr. Jimmy Tolar was admitted to Our Lady of the Lake hospital yesterday afternoon due to complications from his earlier hospitalization.  Please pray for his health to get better.  Pray for “Miss” Naomi as she stays by his side.

Wouldn’t it be nice if every time we made a mistake in real life, we received an “error message” telling us we did something wrong, along with instructions on how to correct it?  And wouldn’t it be nice to keep “backups” so if we did something stupid we could go back and put in the backup, continuing on as if nothing had ever gone wrong?  And if things get really bad, wouldn’t it be nice just to be able to “reboot” and completely start all over again from scratch?

In essence, God has given us a way to do just that.  Part of the blessing of becoming a Christian is the ability to start afresh.  Paul said of the Corinthians:

“Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.  And such were some of you.  But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.” (I Cor. 6:9b-11).

Thanks be to God for giving us all a way to “reboot” and start over.

Wednesday Afternoon

Rev. David Cutrer says his wife, Rhonda, is doing well.  Thank you for your continued prayers for her healing process.

Caroline Crouch is about the same as yesterday, which is a surprise for the doctors.  Her mother is still praying for healing and requests you pray continue to pray for Caroline.  Pray for the family as they pray and wait by Caroline’s side.

Mrs. Johnnie M. McDaniel Walker
(March 26, 1924 – August 31, 2010)

Mrs. Johnnie M. McDaniel Walker, 86, a native of Stoney Point and a lifelong resident of Wilmer passed away at 7:55 p.m., Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at the Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Franklinton.

Everyone who knew Mrs. Johnnie knew her to be passionate about her family, her daylilies and her flower garden.

Mrs. Johnnie is survived by her daughter, Betty Walker Fortinberry and husband, Hubert, Chesbrough; 2 sons, Barry (Bill) Walker, Wilmer and Lemmie Walker and wife, Sharon, Baton Rouge; grandchildren, Greg Fortinberry and wife, Kim, Chesbrough; Erin Heltz and husband, Darrin, Madisonville; Lee Walker and wife, Ena, Jackson, MS; great grandchildren, Cole and Austin Fortinberry, Isabella and Jacob Walker, Logan Heltz, and Elise and Christopher Ribera; 2 sisters, Jerry Wascom and husband, Clyde, Franklinton and Carolyn Smith and husband, Derwood, Stoney Point; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Walker; parents, Zack and Maude McDaniel; brother, Glen and wife, June McDaniel.

Visitation at McKneely & Vaughn Funeral Home, Amite, on Thursday, September 2, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and on Friday, September 3, 2010 from 8:00 a.m. until Celebration of Life Services at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Don McDaniel and Dr. Danny Smith officiating. Interment in the Walker Family Cemetery, Wilmer.

Pallbearers will be Barry Walker, Lee Walker, Greg Fortinberry, Cole Fortinberry, Darren Smith, and Lemmie Walker.

Honorary pallbearers will be Wade Walker, James Harold Bankston, Derwood Smith, Keith McDaniel, Chris Ribera and Darrin Heltz.

The family wishes to thank the Staff of Heritage Manor Nursing Home of Franklinton, Dr. Kyle Magee for the care they provided their Mother. They also wanted to thank James Harold Bankston, who visited and prayed with “Miss Johnnie” every Sunday morning. They also want to especially thank Edith Perry who devoted one year of her life providing loving care for their Mother.

Mrs. Cleo Jackson Travis
(February 17, 1916 – September 1, 2010)

Mrs. Cleo Jackson Travis was born February 17, 1916 and passed away at 4:05 a.m., September 1, 2010 at the St. Helena Parish Hospital, Greensburg. She was 94, a native of Midland, TX and a resident of Greensburg.

She was a lifelong member of Homewood Baptist Church in Alexandria, LA

Mrs. Cleo is survived by a daughter, Mary Travis Moran and husband, Fred, Greensburg; 2 sisters, Janet McInnish, Alexandria and Helen Place, Lake Charles; brother and sister-in-law, Jake and Evelyn Jackson, Rockwood, TN; 2 sister-in-laws, Faye Manual, Alexandria and Margie Zieglar, Lebanon, PA; grandson, John Moran and wife, Wendra, Baton Rouge; great granddaughter, Willa Grace Moran, Baton Rouge; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Preceded in death by husband, Rennie Howard Travis; grandson, Ronald Jeter Moran.

PICTURE WHAT THE world would be like if no one had hidden agendas — everything out on the table, no gossip or talking behind people’s backs…

Imagine how freeing it would be to live like Jesus, not ruled by people’s opinions, to only be concerned about God’s view of us, thus freeing us to care for others with honest words that lead either to rejection or genuine closeness.

Most of us don’t live this way.  We get consumed with how we come across to people.  We hunger for their approval and become manipulative.  This creates a false, but fleeting, sense of satisfaction.  Or, we judge others, telling them that they need our approval.  But Jesus describes a new way to care for people, one unconcerned with their opinion of us, one in which we have both compassion and candor, making our relationships real.

“He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory;

but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true,

and no unrighteousness is in Him.”

John 7:18

I’m hoping September brings us cooler weather, but it is hard to realize September is already here.

Frances Gay said her niece in Texas did very well with her surgery.  Say a prayer of thanks for this good report.

Whitney Kliesch will arrive home today.  Pray for him as he continues to recover from his fall.

BE A FRAGRANT aroma…

Perfume short-circuits the intellect and captures the heart.  Influence nonbelievers like perfume influences you!  We’re talking about something aesthetically pleasing.  The “redemptive neighbor” is winsome.  He has a distinctive, attractive fragrance which stands out from the aromas of this world.  He’s the aroma of life to those who believe, and the aroma of death to those who reject Christ.  The only essence that captures attention comes from the Father.  We’re to be God-scented people!  Joseph C. Continue to pray for George Eddie Lee as he continues to get better.

Pray for Kayla Schneeweiss as her face continues to improve.  Keep praying until it is “all better”.

Continue to pray for Whitney Kliesch as he continues to recover from his injuries.

Pray for the continued rebuilding of New Orleans after Katrina.  You would hope that everything was back to normal by now, but that’s not the case.  Pray for continuing progress and for others to be influenced by the Christian example they witness as many volunteers still are giving of themselves there.

THE BEDOUIN TRIBES who live in the desert have a story they tell their children that can teach us a great deal about how we make decisions…

According to the story, there was once a man living in the desert with his family.  He saw a cloud of dust and sand approaching from the horizon and said to himself, “It is a terrible beast coming to eat me and my family!”  As the cloud of dust got closer, he saw that it was actually a man dressed in black on horseback.  He then said to himself, “It is my enemy, coming to take over my well!”  He went to get his rifle to defend himself.  The horseman got closer and the man could now see the rider clearly through the sights of his rifle.  He recognized the rider and said to himself, “No, it is my brother.”

The three lessons of this story are:

1.  What we focus on determines what we believe.

2.  What we believe determines what we expect.

Sunday Afternoon

Even though Kentwood was without electricity earlier this morning, the power was back on in time for Sunday School and church.  I heard some ladies discussing a comment by an older, and very wise, Kentwood lady.  She said if we can go to work on Monday in the rain, there shouldn’t be any reason not to go to church on Sunday in the rain. I hope you agree and made your way to a house of worship today.

Caroline Crouch

Caroline is now home and seems to feel a little better. Her condition is still very serious. She is vulnerable to infection due to her suppressed immune system. It will be at least a couple of weeks before we can tell if treatment is working. Please continue prayers! Thanks and God Bless!Mr. Clifton Womack continues to improve.  Pray for him as he gets rehab.

Ellen Morris Vande Vuss will have another test this week.  Pray for her family as them make adjustments for the coming months while Ellen is not able to drive.

Pray for Lois Pittman as she has tests done and sees a doctor about the test results.  Pray for the Pittman family as Roger has another brother who is sick.

Pray for Bonnie K. Kelsey as she faces surgery in September.

Continue to pray for teachers and students at school.  “Change” seems to be an important work in several schools this year.

Sunday

Now that we know what we have—Jesus,

this great High Priest with ready access to God—

let’s not let it slip through our fingers.

We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality.

He’s been through weakness and testing,

READING YOUR BIBLE?

Someone has composed the following “Top Ten” list of signs you may not be reading your Bible enough:

10)  The Preacher announces the sermon is from Galatians….. and you check the table of contents.
9)    You think Abraham, Isaac & Jacob may have had a few hit songs during the 60’s.
8)    You open to the Gospel of Luke and a WWII savings bond falls out.
7)    Your favorite Old Testament patriarch is Hercules.
6)    Your favorite Bible verse is “Cleanliness is next to godliness.”
5)    You become frustrated because Charlton Heston isn’t listed in either the concordance or the table of contents.
4)    You catch the kids reading the Song of Solomon, and demand:  “Who gave you this stuff?”
3)    You think the Minor Prophets worked in the quarries.
2)    You keep falling for it every time when the preacher tells you to turn to First Condominiums.

And the number one sign you may not be reading your Bible enough:

It’s hard to over-estimate the importance of reading and studying the Bible.  God’s Word is our source of spiritual nourishment, our light in the midst of a dark world, our mirror to see what needs to be corrected in our lives.  And yet, it is so easy to let other things get in the way and interrupt time we have wanted to dedicate to Bible reading.

“Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.” (Psa. 119:97)

We are starting to see some improvements this evening. Caroline is eating a little more and seems to feel better than yesterday. Tomorrow she undergoes a pulmonary test and we pray for good results. Again, your prayers are making all the difference and we can’t thank you enough.Will update again tomorrow.

Thanks for praying for these two teenage girls this morning.  Their families will be so very appreciative of your continued prayers for them.

Stacey Scarle

We saw the oncologist today. She thinks Stacey tolerated the chemo very well and that  should not have a problem with the next phase. Stacey will get 4 treatments of taxotere  21/28 days apart depending on her blood count. The Dr. was pleased with the change in plans . . . It appears that the tumor has shrunk but she could not tell how much. All in all a good report . . . Thanks so much for your prayers and support.

As Joanie said, she too is appreciative of your prayers for Stacey.

I cannot imagine what it is like to have a child so sick from illness or injury.  As you pray for Caroline, Callie, and Stacey, please pray for the parents as they walk along on this “journey” with their children.  May they always fine peace and comfort from knowing God is walking along with them and holding out his hand to them to help them find peace and comfort each step of the way.
