Tuesday Evening

Caysen Miller

Nikki and Josh Miller went to Baton Rouge for the birth of their son, Casen Tyne Miller.  I’ll give more information in the morning.

Hope Center gave hope on the very first day!

We had a great opening this morning with lots of volunteers as well as some community and church people.  This afternoon we made some sales.  All went well.  Now on for the report that is greater than I ever dreamed it would be.
We were able to give one family food today to meet their need even before Second Harvest has delivered the first food to us.  Thanks to the church in Roseland for making this possible.  We also helped a number of people learn about the food pantry including a man who was on the way home after a week at the hospital.
We also had some nice clothes donated by several people including a man who was there this morning.  An employee of a business came for other reasons, but said she would help get some donations from the store.  Several community people also said they would pass the word about Hope Center.  We receive some cash donations.  What a blessing this day has been to my heart!
I almost forgot.  There is a large magazine display filled with new Bibles and old church literature from classes as well as magazines like “Home Life” and “Journey”.  I know at least five Bibles and a number of magazines were taken.
Two ladies visited this afternoon.  In talking with them, I learned they were looking for a church home.  Bro. Byrum Humphrey was there, so I took them to him.  He located two Two Rivers’ churches near them on his phone. They left with names and addresses to get them involved in the church of their choice.
I feel so blessed tonight!!!   I got to see God working over and over on the very first day of operation for Hope Center.  God is so good!  The workers are very dedicated!  People who had needs got help!  The story does not end here.
When I checked my email, I found a question from a school leader who wanted to know if we would accept donations of food from a school organization?  Yes, indeed we will!.    We will be able to help people before we are ready to distribute food from Second Harvest and between the times they bring us food.
The opportunities are overwhelming!  This is all without a single flyer posted or an article in any newspaper.  God showed us all day long that Hope Center is needed and will be able to meet physical needs and spiritual needs.  I could go on and on, but I’ll stop by saying I feel so blessed to have witnessed these things and other things on the first day!
GOD IS SO GOOD!  THE NEEDS ARE GREAT!  HOPE CENTER HAS ALREADY BEEN USED BY GOD!

Monday

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel,

for it is the power of God for salvation

to everyone who believes,

to the Jew first and also to the Greek.”

~Romans 1:16, NASB~

Please continue to pray for the family of Ray and Beverly Blackwell.  I’m sure it is much more difficult to have two patients than to have only one.  Pray for the health of these two and strength and knowledge for those making decisions and helping care for them.

Connor Corkern is having a difficult time, but hoping to get better without going into the hospital.  Pray for him and for his family as they continue the battle.

Please continue to pray for Mike Hurst as he battles cancer.  Pray for the family with him and the family many miles away.

Mrs. Norma Varnado passed away last night.  The last months have been difficult for her and her family, but she is at peace now.

Operation Christmas Child

  • Thirteen million shoeboxes have been distributed since OCC began.  That many boxes placed end-to-end would circle the world 855 times!
  • When Hannah Bell met Yuri Lopez, who received a shoebox in a Honduran orphanage, at an OCC event in Scottsdale, AZ last year, she was inspired to collect shoeboxes herself. She set a goal of 100 shoeboxes, which she met by reaching out to her church’s youth group, a local preschool, her dad’s co-workers, and out of state friends. Eight year old Hannah collected 116 shoeboxes and donations to support the cost of shipping. “I learned that helping children can make a difference in the world…helping is the big picture in my heart!” –Hannah Bell, Scottsdale, Arizona
  • Working with Operation Christmas Child is a true blessing.  Every box is a gospel opportunity and will change a life forever!  -Sharra K., OCC supporter
  • “My name is Uma from Nepal. I am 13 years old and I’m in 9th grade. I have 7 siblings and it’s very difficult to attend school regularly because we cannot get enough school supplies. I was so excited to see school supplies in the gift box. I did not have any to go to school, but Operation Christmas Child provided me with them. I am so happy to get these. Now I can be regular in my school!”

Week of Prayer for Georgia Barnett Offering for State Missions Sept. 14 -21

“Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good.” Titus 3:14

The WMU of Two Rivers Association will celebrate this week at FBC, Kentwood at 10:00 this morning with Sylvester Humphrey, volunteer coordinator of the new Hope Center, as our speaker.  Hope will open at 9:00 in the morning in Roseland with a thrift store and a Second Harvest Food Bank.  Applications for the food can be completed beginning in the morning. The dates of food distribution are not schedule yet, but I will keep you update.

Today, final preparations of the building are being made.  Later, volunteers will be needed to work each day.  Hope Center will be open Tuesday – Friday, 9:00 – 5:00.  What a blessing Hope Center will be to people of our area!  What is blessing each volunteer will receive!

You may ask how Hope Center and the Georgia Barnett Offering are related.  Some of the start-up funds have been provided through our state missions office.  Additional funding will be provided by the churches of Two Rivers Association and by individuals.

Third Thursday – We will be meeting Thursday at the cabin at 6:30.  Join us for a wonderful evening of food, fellowship, devotional, prayer, and music.

“The harvest is abundant,

but the workers are few.

Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest

to send out workers into His harvest.”

~Matthew 9:37-38, HCSB~

(As soon as I read that verse,

I thought of the volunteers at Hope Center.

I thank God for each person who has freely given their time now

knowing there is a harvest ahead.)

9/11 – Let’s pray for our country.  May it return to its strength and great image in the eyes of its people and those around the world.  I think the first step in the right direction will be to put God back in His rightful place.

Senior Adult Revival – Tuesday was good too!  I’m looking forward to this morning in Greensburg.  It all begins at 9:15 with plenty of coffee, treats, friends, hugs, good music, and wonderful preaching.  There will also be enough food to feed half of Greensburg!  God blessed the gathering Monday and Tuesday.  I’m sure He will be back today.

Hope Center – The news on the air condition is not good.  Now, the expected date for installation is Friday.  Work in going on there anyway.  I will be there after the revival today and again at 8:00 in the morning.  Come join us.  The work is easier and more fun when others are there.  I know God will bless our efforts!  I have a new request, coat hangers (new or used)!  You can give them to me or drop them off yourself.  This is a project of sixteen churches.

Fall Food Roundup – Food is being collected in area Baptist Churches for the children of the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home.  The truck from the home will pick up at FBC, Kentwood early Monday morning.  You may take your food until Sunday night.  Leave it in the the stairwell to the church office.  This is a project of churches all across out state.

Operation Christmas Child – Our craft day is Saturday.  We will meet at 1:00 at FBC, K to make items to go into the boxes we are sending.  You do not need to be “crafty” or to bring a craft to share, but it will be okay if you do.  This is a project of churches of various denominations around the world, not just mine.  Join the spirit of unity and purpose!

Easley Family – Joe and Jean Easley were still in Greensburg the last I heard.  I also leaned there have been others in the family with serious problems.  Their God, who is also mine, is more than sufficient to pray for them.  Join the family and friends in praying for them.

Senior Adult Revival at NZBC

What a great meeting we had!  The church was full.  The preaching was good.  The singing was wonderful.  Food was plentiful and delicious.  Hugs were available everywhere.  God’s presence was felt in all that was done.

Today, the revival service will be at Kedron Baptist Church.  Fellowship and morning refreshments begin at 9:15, followed by choir practice at 9:30, and the service at 10:00.  If you missed yesterday, you can’t get a “retake”, but you can come today and tomorrow and experience revival with us.

Hope Center

After revival, I was privileged to work with a team of ladies from the Kentwood area at Hope Center.  It was the first time to begin organizing the things that will be sold.  The efforts of the ladies really made a difference.  There’s much more to do, so contact Sylvester Humphry or someone else to volunteer.  Remember, everyone is a volunteer. Many volunteers will be needed now and in the future.  Be thinking about how you can work Hope Center (food bank and/or thrift store) in your schedule.  Prepare to be greatly blessed.

We discovered a need yesterday.  Hope Center needs coat hangers.  If you bring some to FBC, Kentwood, I will deliver them.  You can leave them in the stairwell at the office entrance to FBC, K.

Truett Cathy was a modern day hero.  No, he did not rescue people from burning buildings or hang the moon in place, but he had a food business that honored God and was concerned about people, especially young people.  When we visit Jason, we visit Berry College where Truett Cathy invested his money and efforts to help young people in so many ways – a place to live, someone to care about them, food, camp, and many others things, but the greatest was his Christian example and opportunities for them.  Truett Cathy’s life on earth is over, but he lives on through the lives of many young people.  Truett Cathy was a hero because he let Jesus to live in and show through his life.  Well done, Mr. Cathy.

Ron and Alana Ichter Greenwich, missionaries to Santa Catarina, Brazil have retired after 30 years and are returning home to Louisiana this weekend.  Her dad was my music minister/children’s choir director when I was a child.  Later, when Jennie served as a journeyman in Brazil, she taught the children of the Greenwich and Blackwell families, both from LA.  Sweet memories!  Her parents are also retired Brazilian ministers to Brazil.  They live in Minden, LA and are so excited to have Alana home.  Bro. Bill still serves on the church staff working with senior adults.  I might add that some of the third generation of the Ichter family are currently serving as missionaries.  What an legacy!  How they have blessed and been blessed!  I wonder how many souls will be in heaven because of the Ichter Clan.  Please pray for Ron and Alana as they make this big change in their lives.

You may remember praying for a little boy named Eli.  This is an update.

Today one year ago we came home from the hospital after the chemotherapy was over for good ! We claimed it and u claimed it with me…I remember how all of you came in agreement with me and for me that it was not over for him. I clearly remember the walk down the hallway to go home..it was awesome. I’m lucky to have a healthy boy and it teaches you to not take a day for granted and that you tell each other you love each other as much as possible. He’s a blessing… He’s smart ..he could teach lots of people to not sweat the small stuff in life and everyday battles. Money isn’t everything…materials aren’t everything.. Its who is in your life and the laughter as and the memory making a and the love as and hugs….don’t waste your day being upset over things we have no control of… My dad was that way to and I saw so much of him in Eli…. Each day is a gift..invest I n people.. This world is too full of people in it for themselves… Invest..smile.. Laugh ..love …its what got us thru each day in the battle and still today.

The Friday morning Bible study is so rewarding to me.  Our number is growing.  Discussions are so interesting.  We are all seeking for a better understanding of the “woman of the week” as we compare her life to our lives.  Next Friday, we will study Gomer.  You can prepare for the lesson by studying Hosea 1-3.

Ladies, please don’t forget your quart-sized bags of home prepared foods for a family tomorrow.  I can tell you now that these foods will be greatly appreciated.  A family member told me how blessed the family was to have Christian friends.  Let’s be sure to live up to that great name. “Christian”, in this effort and in all we do.

Hope Center

The training yesterday morning went very well.  More volunteers than expected attended the meeting.  What a great response!  More volunteers will be needed though to keep the ministry open daily.  If interested, I’m confident you will get a good report from those who got information and a tour yesterday morning.  If you are able to help, please do so.  You will be blessed!  I’ll help anyone who wants to get connected.  Rest assured, that the message of Jesus will be shared at Hope Center.  It will be a place to find something greater than food and clothing.

Sunday is the first Sunday of the month.  That means it is the day to take frozen food in quart sized bags.  I’ll have ice chests in my Sunday School room ready for you to deposit your items.  I have spoken with the family.  They feel so blessed just to know we love them and want to help them in this way.

  • For what is your life?                                                                                             It is even a vapor that appears for a little time                                     and then vanishes away.                                                                                                                                                                ~James 4:14~                                 “In my Father’s house are many rooms…                                                   I am going there to prepare a place for you.”                                                                                                                       ~John 14:2~
  • ‘When We All Get to Heaven” –  http://cyberhymnal.org/htm/w/w/wwag2hvn.htm

I don’t like to ask for prayer for our world and our country every day, but events in our world and here in America are a daily reminder of how far our world is from Heaven is so many ways.  Take some time away from current events and focus on heaven today.  Pray people will be ready to face eternity because, one way or another, we will all do that one day.

“Tell to the generation to come

the praises of the LORD,

and His strength

and His wondrous works that He has done.”

~Psalm 78:4b~

In mentioning the upcoming events, I forgot to mention the Fall Food Round-up for the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home.  You have almost two weeks to bring items to the stairwell by the office door.  Pickup will be early on September 15th, so you should get your goods there on the 14th, which is a Sunday.  Suggested items would be toilet tissue, paper towels, cleaning supplies, cereal, canned fruit and vegetables, and pasta.  You can also give money to help them in making bulk purchases.
