“For if, while we were enemies,

we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son,

[then how] much more, having been reconciled,

will we be saved by His life!”

~Romans 5:8, HCSB~

TODAY’S PRAYER
IMB
JULY 12, 2010

“This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.” (Psalm 34:6a)

WORLD LEADERS. “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for King Juan Carlos I of Spain (southwestern Europe).

BANGKOK, THAILAND (BANG-kok). R, a Burmese woman, is a member of an international church in Bangkok. Her son studies at a university in southern Thailand. This past Christmas, R and her son handed out Christmas stockings in his city as part of a ministry sponsored by their church. The stockings contained homemade cookies, a Gospel tract, and a pen. R reports that 10 people who received the stockings have now become followers of Jesus. She is asking for help in getting Bibles and tracts to her son and the other believers there. There is a lot of interest in the Gospel among the 50,000 Burmese who live in southern Thailand. Pray for the Burmese church that meets at the international church as they try to organize a trip to deliver the requested discipleship materials and offer training to the local believers. Pray for Baptist representatives Martin and Carrie Chappell, who serve among the international community in Bangkok.

CENTRAL TIBETANS IN ASIA (ti-BEH-tuns). M, a young Central Tibetan Christian, has been overwhelmed with worry recently concerning her relationship with her husband and his family, none of whom are believers. The stress of the confusing situation even caused her to become suicidal. But the Lord saved her from inflicting too much harm, and also blessed her with a picture of reconciliation while she was praying about her circumstances. Petition God for protection from the evil one’s schemes to destroy her and her faith, and ask for reconciliation to be the reality. Pray that M will press into Jesus, daily surrendering her marriage to Him and living to glorify the Lord among her family!

Turning the Tide of our Nation

Thursday

Never tell your neighbors to wait until tomorrow

if you can help them now.

~Proverbs 3:28 (TEV)~

Micah Tolleson, my 22 year old cousin, will have the regrown brain tumor removed today.  Please pray and stay updated by visiting his CaringBridge site.

This is the day I get to have all six of my grandchildren together for the first time in three years.  It’s been three years since we had all of them at once.  Pray nothing interferes with a good visit for all of us.  Jennie is here and Jason and Becki will come tomorrow.  Pray for safe traveling for them.  Pray for Boyd who is still in Europe and working in three different countries while his family is stateside.

Continue to pray for Gretchen V. Simpson as she awaits surgery which is scheduled for one week from today.  Pray she will be able to endure the pain well this week and the surgery goes well next week.

Thanks to having grandchildren here, David and I got to go watch them bowl with children from the church.  It was a good experience for all.  Thank God for parents who see that all children get to have good, clean fun with other Christian families.

The youth are home from camp despite a bus breakdown.  Thankfully, they were able to get a ride home with another church group.  The bus is repaired in Alabama.  Pray for Marty Simpson as he travels drive the bus home.

JULY 1, 2010

“Blessed be the Lord, because He has heard the voice of my supplications!” (Psalm 28:6)

Please pray today for Prime Minister Robert Fico of Slovakia (central Europe, south of Poland).

Prayer requests from Eddie Cox, director of IMB’s Office of Global Prayer Strategy, to “Today’s Prayer” intercessors:

Please express your thanks to our heavenly Father, who faithfully and lovingly responds to our many prayers.

Throughout 2009, we prayed to the Lord of the harvest to thrust laborers into the fields, and He responded with 753 new workers being commissioned to serve abroad–326 long-term and 427 two-year missionaries.

We also prayed for the evangelistic ministries of our missionary personnel, and He blessed us with 506,019 new believers being baptized.

Another prayer request was for church-planting efforts, and God answered with 24,650 new churches being established.

We serve a truly amazing God. All praise and honor to Him, the One who loves all peoples and speaks into lost hearts around the world. May His name be high and lifted up . . .

HEAT

1ametal.jpgPETER USED A powerful metaphor from the world of metallurgy…

When the metallurgist mines the metal, it is in an ore state with a mixture of dross. That means there are inherent corruptions in the metal that rob it of its strength and beauty. In order to bring the metal to its purest state, the metallurgist applies white hot heat until the ore is liquefied and boiling. In this process, the corruptions are boiled out, and it becomes fundamentally stronger and more beautiful than ever before.

What are trials? They are God’s boiling pot. When we initially come to Christ we are dross-corrupted. We are carrying around “corruptions” inside of us that rob us of our strength and beauty. So God, in the grandeur and faithfulness of His redemptive love, boils us. The difficulties that come our way are not a sign of His unfaithfulness and inattention. No, they are an indication of His love. He knows that we are not yet what we were meant to be. He has dug us out of the mine, but we need to be refined.

Now why is this so hard for us to deal with? I am convinced it is because we tend to live with a destination mentality. We want like to be easy, satisfying, and good as it can be, immediately here and now. But, this isn’t a time of destination. Peter says our destination is guaranteed, but we will not have it now. Now is a time of preparation. It is a time of radical, personal growth and chance, so God applies white hot heat to prepare us for the destination to come. Paul David Tripp, “Painful Faith: God’s Story and Suffering,” Lost in the Middle, 197-198

“In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while,

if need be, you have been grieved by various trials,

that the genuineness of your faith,

being much more precious than gold that perishes,

though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory

at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

From Chris Wales

Kirk Wales is departing for seven to eight month deployment to Afghanistan June 11. Please remember him in your prayers as well as the other men and women in the military serving and defending our country.

I am so proud of Kirk and his family.  They know the importance of God, country, and family.  Join me in praying for him and his family.

Mrs. Thomas Carter that many of your will remember from her long service at FGB in Kentwood is still putting up a battle with the cancer that has been working in her body for years.  Please pray for her and for her family in the Kedron area west of Amite.

Read the latest updates on Macy Gueldner and pray for her, her family, and the medical staff caring for her.

Please pray today for Prime Minister Emil Boc of Romania (southeastern Europe, between Ukraine and Bulgaria).

EUROPEAN PEOPLES. Summer is a great time to visit Germany and Austria. The weather is typically warm, but not too hot. Outdoor markets, ice cream shops and cafes, as well as town festivals, draw large crowds and provide opportunities for engaging in conversations. Baptist representatives in these countries often plan evangelistic outreach projects during the summer months and invite volunteer teams to join them. Intercede that the hearts of Baptist representatives and volunteers alike will be in tune with the Holy Spirit and that they will be completely open to what He desires to accomplish through them. Pray that they will have many opportunities to share the Good News with Germans and Austrians and that many will place their faith in Him.

LIGHTHOUSE CITY, CHINA. Thank you for praying for people to turn from false idols to the only One who is worthy of worship. Praise the Lord that by His grace, a family of three recently came to faith and were baptized last month! lighthouse@foobox.com

Pray for Alice Faye Lee.  She fell yesterday.  She now has a sling for a broken bone near her shoulder.  Pray the arm heals properly and no other problems develop.

Pray for VBS (Vacation Bible School).  Thank God for the workers who are planning, studying, and decorating for next week.  VBS will be held in several churches, including Kentwood and Spring Creek, next week.  Contact you local church to learn when your children, grandchildren can attend.  Volunteer to help. Good help is always appreciated. Especially pray for children who will be in attendance at VBS. Say a special word of thanks to the person who coordinates VBS. “As they were going along the road,

they came to a place where there was some water.

The official said, ‘Look! Here is some water.

Why can’t I be baptized?’”

~Acts 8:36-37, CEV~

Dear Intercessors, this is Eleanor Witcher of the Office of Global Prayer Strategy, expressing joy with you in the baptism of many around the world.

T planned a baptism for a small group in South Asia of about 10. He was going to baptize them very near where they live, but they all complained that the water was “dirty.” T asked them where they would like to go. They agreed that a not-too-far-away temple would be best. T told them that if they were not afraid to go there and be baptized, then he surely was not afraid. They went there and took baptism at the temple’s lake/bathing area as many looked on. Pray that many more in South Asia will obediently follow the Master.

A worker among a Last Frontier people group writes: “I had an opportunity to meet a middle school teacher who is the mother of two children. One day she told me that her older daughter, who had studied overseas, asked for her blessing to believe our Lord. She said that she gave a nod. So I asked her whether she wanted to hear more about Him. She wasn’t interested at that time. That was a year ago. Throughout on and off contact and at our Christmas gathering, she began to open her heart. Finally she decided to follow our Father. It wasn’t only her, though. Her younger daughter also committed herself. They both got baptized on the same day. Who do you think I will turn my attention to next? Yes, you are right–her husband.”

* Please pray for this school teacher’s family so that all of them will have the same heavenly Father.

* Give thanks for bold believers who are willing to proclaim their testimonies of salvation before everyone in their community.

* Intercede for those in your congregation who are currently resisting the Lord’s call to be baptized.

THE NAME WE WEAR

When the 1960s ended, many hippies moved down the coast to Santa Cruz.  They got married and had children.  But they didn’t name their children Melissa or Brett.  People in the mountains around Santa Cruz grew accustomed to their children playing with little Time Warp or Spring Fever.  And eventually Moonbeam, Earth, Love and Precious Promise all ended up in public school.

That’s when the kindergarten teachers first met Fruit Stand.  Every fall, parents applied name tags to their children, kissed them good-bye and sent them off to school on the bus.  So it was for Fruit Stand.  The teachers thought the boy’s name was odd, but they tried to make the best of it.

“Would you like to play with the blocks, Fruit Stand?” they offered.

And later, “Fruit Stand, how about a snack?”  He accepted hesitantly.  By the end of the day, his name didn’t seem much odder than Heather’s or Sun Ray’s.

At dismissal time, the teachers led the children out to the buses.

“Fruit Stand, do you know which one is your bus?”  He didn’t answer.  That wasn’t strange.  He hadn’t answered them all day.  Lots of children are shy on the first day of school.  It didn’t matter.  The teachers had instructed the parents to write the names of their children’s bus stop on the reverse side of their name tags.  The teacher simply turned over the tag. There, neatly printed, was the word “Anthony.”

We often hear folks say, “There’s nothing in a name!”  But there is very much something in a name.  Our name identifies who we are and where we came from (and sometimes where we’re going).  That’s why Abram’s name was changed to Abraham (“father of a multitude”), and Simon’s to Peter (“the rock”).

As Christians, we are proud to wear the name of the one who is our Lord, our Savior and our head.

“If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified.  But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people’s matters.  Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.” (1 Peter 4:14-16)

It truly does make a difference what name we wear.  If you don’t believe me, just ask Fruit Stand.

Have a great day!

“You know, from the first day I set foot in Asia, how I was with you the whole time–serving the Lord with all humility, with tears, and with the trials that came to me through the plots of the Jews–and that I did not shrink back from proclaiming to you anything that was profitable, or from teaching it to you in public and from house to house,” (Acts 20: 18b-20, HCSB).

Dear Intercessors, this is Eleanor Witcher of the Office of Global Prayer Strategy, giving thanks for years of faithful missionary service.

Sixty missionaries were honored Saturday night at a recognition service and reception. These individuals have served a combined 1,730 years on the field. That’s nearly 30 years per person. These individuals, both singles and couples, answered the call of God early in their lives then steadfastly set their faces to go to their new countries of service. They have held responsibilities of leadership, education, church planting and more. Each one could regale you with stories of culture and friendships.

Yet there is no story more precious than those of lives impacted with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. During the last 30 years, these missionaries have had the joy of telling the story of Jesus more times than can be counted. Thousands of lives have been eternally changed.

Respect is duly given these missionaries, but they would say, “All the praise and glory goes to the Lord!”

* Please give thanks for God’s calling and gifting that allowed these sixty missionaries to persevere through three decades of ministry.

* Ask God to raise up new workers–perhaps even you–who will serve sacrificially and with longsuffering.

* Intercede for these sixty emeritus missionaries as they transition into their new roles and ministries, asking God to give them good health, patience as they adjust to life in the United States, and fulfillment as they steadfastly set their faces in a new direction.

a 20.jpgWHEN DAN CLARK was a teenager, he and his father once stood in life to buy tickets for the circus…

As they waited, they noticed the family immediately in front of them. The parents were holding hands, and they had eight children in tow, all behaved well and all probably under the age of twelve. Based on their clean but simple clothing, he suspected they didn’t have a lot of money. The kids jabbered about the exciting things they expected to see, and he could tell that the circus was going to be a new adventure for them.

As the couple approached the counter, the attendant asked how many tickets they wanted. The man proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adults tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”

When the attendant quoted the price, the man’s wife let go of his hand, and her head dropped. The man leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say?” The attendant again quoted the price. The man obviously didn’t have enough money. He looked crushed.

Clark says his father watched all of this, put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a twenty-dollar bill, and dropped it on the ground. His father then reached down, picked up the bill, tapped the man on the shoulder, and said, “Excuse me, sir, this fell out of your pocket…”

The man knew exactly what was going on. He looked straight into Clark’s father’s eyes, took his hand, shook it, and with a tear streaming down his cheek, replied, “Thank you, thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family.”

Clark and his father wen back to their car and drove home. They didn’t have enough money to go to the circus that night, but it didn’t matter. They had encouraged a whole family. And it was something neither family would ever forget. John Maxwell in Winning with People

When he came and had seen the grace of God,

he was glad and encouraged them all
