Don’t shuffle along,

eyes to the ground,

Look up,

that’s where the action is.

See things from his perspective.

“At the name of Jesus every knee should bow…” Philippians 2:10

Mike Benson, Editor

THERE ARE THREE kinds of people in the world today…

There are “well-poisoners,” who discourage you and stomp on your creativity and tell you what you can’t do.

There are “lawn-mowers,” people who are well-intentioned but self-absorbed; they tend to their own needs, mow their own lawns, and never leave their yards to help another person.

Finally, there are “life-enhancers,” people who reach out to enrich the lives of others, to lift them up and inspire them.  We need life-enhancers, and we need to surround ourselves with life-enhancers.  Walt Disney

“How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth

with the Holy Spirit and with power,

who went about doing good

and healing all who were oppressed by the devil,

for God was with Him.”

Larkin Dorris

Update from Larkin’s Aunt BeBe (who is in Memphis now)…

Mommee and I are having a wonderful time in Memphis with Larkin and Scott.  We arrived Saturday afternoon after a road trip that seemed to fly by (not because of my driving!) due to all the catching up that Mommee and I were able to do.  Larkin and Scott greeted us with big smiles and warm hugs, and then we were off to St. Jude to pick up a prescription for Larkin and visit the Gift Shop (Larkin knows her Aunt BeBe!!).  We found some great stuff at the Gift Shop including matching “Hope” necklaces for Larkin and I.  When we got back to the apartment Larkin showed Mommee and I all of the pretty pictures she has drawn, and Mommee read to Larkin from a story book that her good friend Mrs. Becky Watson sent Larkin.  After dinner we played many rounds of Apples to Apples then Larkin drew us more pretty pictures in her fashion design notebook.

Today we went to St. Jude around 8:45 a.m. for Larkin to do her lab work and get her “G” medicine.  We were all very happy to hear that Larkin’s counts were up a bit.  She also was given platelets.  When we got back from St. Jude, we ate some of Scott’s yummy left over turkey spagetti.  Then, Mommee, Larkin and I played a neat game called Shut the Box and Bunco (for kids) while Scott went to the grocery store.  Later, Mommee showed Larkin how to crossstitch and Larkin and BeBe did some online shopping.  For dinner, Larkin and Scott prepared a delicious meal consisting of baked tilapia over rice, baked zuccini, and cooked carrots (I actually ate cooked carrots which I normally cannot stand….Scott and Larkin are great cooks!!!!).  We are now all relaxing in the den and about to play another game or two.

Mommee and I will be heading home in the morning about the time Scott and Larkin head to St. Jude for her day’s appointments.  Kelly will be heading back to Memphis tomorrow.  Once Kelly arrives back, Scott will head home to stay with Mckenzie for the next couple of weeks.

God bless our dear sweet Larkin and keep her well!

CAN YOU GIVE A PUSH?

A man is in bed with his wife when there is knocking on the door.  He rolls over and looks at his clock.  It’s half past three in the morning.

“I’m not getting out of bed at this time,” he thinks, and rolls over.

Then, a louder knock follows.  “Aren’t you going to answer that?” says his wife.

So he drags himself out of bed, and goes downstairs. He opens the door and there is a man standing at the door.  It doesn’t take the homeowner long to realize the man is drunk.

“Hi there,” slurs the stranger, “Can you give me a push?”

“No, get lost, it’s half past three.  I was in bed,” says the man and slams the door.

He goes back up to bed and tells his wife what happened and she says “Dave, that wasn’t very nice of you.  Remember that night we broke down in the pouring rain on the way to pick the kids up from the baby-sitter and you had to knock on that man’s house to get us started again?  What would have happened if he’d told us to get lost?”

“But the guy was drunk,” says the husband.

“It doesn’t matter,” says the wife. “He needs our help and it would be the Christian thing to help him.”

So the husband gets out of bed again, gets dressed, and goes downstairs. He opens the door, and not being able to see the stranger anywhere he shouts, “Hey, do you still want a push?” and he hears a voice cry out, “Yeah, please!”

Still being unable to see the stranger, he shouts:  “Where are you?”

The stranger replies:  “I’m over here, on your swing.”

There are times we all need a little push from one another.  In fact, that’s one of the reasons that we gather together in worship.  We could praise God alone, but we have the opportunity to encourage one another every time we meet together.

“And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Heb. 10:24-25)

It’s not just reserved for Sundays, though.  Know anybody that needs a push today?

Have a great day!

Nunzio Joseph Ruffino
(August 3, 1926 – March 16, 2010)

Nunzio Joseph Ruffino was born on August 3, 1926 and passed away on March 16, 2010. He is survived by his wife, Josephine Arnone Ruffino, Amite; a daughter, Rose Ruffino, Amite, his son, Louis Ruffino and his wife, Glenda, Hammond; a brother, Louis Ruffino and his wife, Josie, Baton Rouge; a sister, Mary Checchin, Chicago, IL; four grandchildren, Courtney Putnam and her husband, Alan, Florence, TX, Brett Ruffino and his wife, Michele, Longview, TX, Carrie Smith and her husband, Drew, Canton, GA and Blake Ruffino, Hammond, LA; and his four great grandchildren, Andrew and Addison Smith, Morgan Ruffino and Wyatt Putnam. He is preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Loretta Ruffino, 4 brothers, John, Tony, Joe and Sam, and as well as 5 sisters Rose, Pamella, Lucy, Josie, and Stella. As a young man, Nunzio enlisted in the Army serving mainly in the Philippine Islands and was honorably discharged in the mid 1940’s. After returning home from the Army, Nunzio returned to the family farm whereby he quickly became known as a major farmer of strawberries and peppers. Nunzio was a tireless worker in everything that he did. From the family farm, to the local business that he and his wife ran in downtown Amite for 20+ years, to the “inventory manager” at his son’s Ruffino Auto Supply in Roseland in the mid 1980’s. As time passed, Nunzio’s will power continued to get stronger and he just never quit working. A crutch under one arm and a rake in the other, Nunzio worked tirelessly on his most prized possession, his yard. He was honored on multiple occasions with the monthly “Garden of the Month” which he cherished. As the years have past, forcing Nunzio inside, he had to become more dependant on others to assist him. No one did this better than his beloved wife Josephine and his favorite “men”: The Amite City Fire Department. The Ruffino family wants to send it’s deepest appreciation for the Amite City Fire Department for the compassion they’ve shown to take care of our “POP”: Nunzio Joseph Ruffino. The family would also like to send it’s deepest appreciation to all of the Home Health Nurses, Dr. Malik Spady, Dr. Susan Zaccharia, and a special thanks to Dr. Judd Patton of Mary Bird Perkins in Baton Rouge. You took care of him and we can’t thank you enough. God Bless you “POP” and don’t worry, we’ll take care of your yard! The Ruffino Family would like to invite friends and family to the visitation at McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Friday and from 10 a.m. until 12:40 p.m. on Saturday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Helena Catholic Church, Amite, at 1 p.m. on Saturday conducted by Fr. Joe Camilleri. Interment will follow at the Amite Memorial Gardens.

I hoped you marked your calendar to come enjoy food, fellowship, and a devotional tonight at the cabin at 6:30.  We treasure these times and hope you will want to join us.

I PLAYED FOOTBALL in college…

I wasn’t very big–only 150 pounds–and I wasn’t very good.  I got hurt a lot.  I broke my arm once, my neck once, and my nose six times.

When I tell people about it, they always ask me, “Why did you keep doing it?”

For the longest time I had no answer.

Then one day it hit me.  If there hadn’t been any fans in the stands cheering me on–my family and friends–I wouldn’t have kept playing and trying so hard.  But there were, so I did.  Tom Malone, former President and COO of Milliken and Company

But Moses’ hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it.  And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.” Exodus 17:12

TODAY’S PRAYER
IMB
MARCH 16, 2010

“Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving.” (Colossians 4:2)

WORLD LEADERS. “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia (western Africa).

CITY OF NEW HOPE, CHINA. Another student fellowship/church will soon start in the southeast area of the city where no student fellowship exists. That area has been surveyed, and the new work may begin in April. Please pray for the young couple who will take the leadership of this new fellowship/church.

WINDWARD ISLANDS. The Windward Islands Team writes: “We thank God for the Baptist and many other evangelical churches present on the island of Grenada. Still, there is much darkness among many of the Grenadian people who ‘have a form of godliness’ but deny the life-changing power of the Gospel in their lives. Please pray for two new Baptist church plants in Balthazar and Requin, asking that the power of the Gospel will truly transform lives and produce multiplying disciples for Jesus. Pray for IMB colleagues as they seek to inventory and determine the Great Commission vision and involvement of Great Commission Christians on the island for future mobilization toward engaging unengaged unreached people groups (UUPGs) in the Americas and beyond.”

“At the name of Jesus every knee should bow…” Philippians 2:10

Mike Benson, Editor

A CERTAIN YOUNG man worked in a factory where heavy machinery rattled the entire building…

Not liking the jarring, he brought a rubber mat to the factory and stood on it.  The vibrations no longer bothered him as they once had.  However, after several days, someone stole his mat.  He responded by getting two pieces of rubber and nailing them to his heels.  He now had two little rubber mats that no one could steal and that went with him everywhere.  The name of the young man was O’Sullivan, the original inventor of rubber heels.

Like this young man, we as Christians have that which protects us against the jarring of the world.  It is called prayer, and it goes with us everywhere.  (Wade Webster, cf., Stephen R. Covey, Everyday Greatness, p. 220)

“Be anxious for nothing,

but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving,

let your requests be made known to God;

and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,

will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:6-7

“About midnight Paul and Silas were praying

and singing hymns of praise to God,

and the prisoners were listening to them.”

~Acts 16:25, NASB~

Dear Intercessors, this is Eleanor Witcher of the Office of Global Prayer Strategy, praying with you for believers facing persecution.

A national church planter and another church member were arrested and have been held without charge for several weeks. Police confiscated Bibles, other Christian literature, and a computer. The authorities began questioning the other church members. Christians are usually held only a few days, so the church planter’s wife asks for continued prayer that the authorities would free her husband soon. She asks special prayer for one of her children whom this is affecting deeply.

Recently one of the local Deccani Muslim church planters was taken from his family to a local mosque and interrogated then beaten after discovering his Bible. The church planter was put under house arrest. He was allowed to leave the house to purchase milk. During that short time, he ran into one of the other church-planting trainers. He was scared, but began crying when he talked about wanting to continue in discipleship/training. What an amazing testimony of faith, and very humbling for the one who mentors this young man.

Persecution continues to intensify in Iran. In these times of political unrest, many people are suffering. Believers are arrested. House church members are threatened. We need to stand with the persecuted in prayer. Please ask God to make His presence known to those in prison. May He embolden Christians in Iran. Pray that they will have wisdom to be “as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.” Ask God to use this time to expand His kingdom in Iran.

* Please pray that the Lord will use what is intended for evil to invade local church bodies with eternal hope.

* Pray that instances like these will spur believers on to a renewed devotion to Christ Jesus and obedience to His Word.

* Pray that the groups that continue to meet will evolve into healthy, reproducing churches despite the persecution.

OF PRIMARY IMPORTANCE

It is reported that a magazine ran a “Dilbert Quotes” contest several years ago.  The writers were looking for people to submit quotes from their real-life Dilbert-type managers.  Here are some of the submissions:

1. As of tomorrow, employees will only be able to access the building using individual security cards. Pictures will be taken next Wednesday and employees will receive their cards in two weeks.  (This was the winning entry; Fred Dales at Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, WA)

2. What I need is a list of specific unknown problems we will encounter. (Lykes Lines Shipping)

3. E-mail is not to be used to pass on information or data. It should be used only for company business.  (Accounting Mgr., Electric Boat Company)

4. Quote from the boss: “Teamwork is a lot of people doing what ‘I’ say.” (Mktg. executive, Citrix Corporation)

5. We know that communication is a problem, but the company is not going to discuss it with the employees.  (AT&T Long Lines Division)

6. We recently received a memo from senior management saying, “This is to inform you that a memo will be issued today regarding the subject mentioned above.”  (Microsoft, Legal Affairs Division)

7. One day my boss asked me to submit a status report to him concerning a project I was working on. I asked him if tomorrow would be soon enough. He said, “If I wanted it tomorrow, I would have waited until tomorrow to ask for it!”  (New Business Mgr., Hallmark Cards)

8. This project is so important, we can’t let things that are more important interfere with it.  (Advertising/Mktg. Mgr., UPS)

Even though that last statement doesn’t make any sense, it suggests the truth that there are some things so important that nothing else should get in the way.  Unfortunately for UPS (and other employers who may not realize it), that level of importance will never be attached to any project at work. It can only be attached to matters of spiritual commitment.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)

There is only one thing that is of “primary importance”, and that should be our desire to do God’s will.  May God bless you as you commit yourself to truly put “first things first.”

Have a great day!

Words in red are neither more nor less important than the words in black.  Jesus said to the seventy, “He who hears you hears Me…” (Luke 10:16).  Jesus meant that every divinely inspired writer or speaker was equally important, since the message originated with God’s Spirit (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

The idea of a red-letter Bible originated with Louis Klopsch, the first editor for the Christian Herald.  Its November 1901 issue ran an advertisement offering a red-letter Bible to readers.  Dr. Klopsch based this on Luke 22:20, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you,” spoken by Jesus as He instituted the Lord’s Supper.  Reasoning that blood was red, he asked himself, “Why not a red-letter Bible with the red words to be those of our Lord?”  He asked Bible scholars in America and Europe to submit passages they regarded as spoken by Christ while on earth.

The first publishing of a red-letter Bible (copyright 1899 by Louse Klossch) numbered 6,000 copies.  They sold quickly.  Presses were soon running day and night to supply the demand.  The King of Sweden sent a congratulatory cablegram, but the message that thrilled Klopsch the most came from President Theodore Roosevelt.  He was even invited to dine with the chief executive at the White House.

Dr. Klopsch died March 28,  1910, and was buried at Mont Lawn near Tonawanda, New York, where he had established an orphanage.  At the time The New York Tribune said, “He will not be easily replaced.  He lived and died by his own motto: ‘Do all the good you can for all the people you can.’  This, he truly did.”  Mark N. Posey

“How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth

with the Holy Spirit and with power,

who went about doing good and healing

all who were oppressed by the devil,

for God was with Him.”

~Acts 10:38~
