It is God himself who has made us what we are

and given us new lives from Christ Jesus;

and long ages ago he planned

that we should spend these lives in helping others.

Thought for the Day

The Last Day of Your Life

The following quotes are reported to come from an actual newspaper contest where entrants ages 4 to 15 were asked to imitate “Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey”:

Give me the strength to change the things I can, the grace to accept the things I cannot, and a great big bag of money. –Age 13

It sure would be nice if we got a day off for the president’s birthday, like they do for the queen’s. Of course, then we would have a lot of people voting for a candidate born on July 3 or December 26, just for the long weekends. –Age 8

Democracy is a beautiful thing, except for that part about letting just any old yokel vote. –Age 10

For centuries, people thought the moon was made of green cheese. Then the astronauts found that the moon is really a big hard rock. That’s what happens to cheese when you leave it out. –Age 6

As you make your way through this hectic world of ours, set aside a few minutes each day. At the end of the year, you’ll have a couple of days saved up. –Age 7

Often, when I am reading a good book, I stop and thank my teacher. That is, I used to, until she got an unlisted number. –Age 15

The only stupid question is the one that is never asked, except maybe “Don’t you think it is about time you audited my return?” or “Isn’t it morally wrong to give me a warning when, in fact, I was speeding?” –Age 15

If we could just get everyone to close their eyes and visualize world peace for an hour, imagine how serene and quiet it would be until the looting started. –Age 15

I believe you should live each day as if it is your last, which is why I don’t have any clean laundry because, come on, who wants to wash clothes on the last day of their life? –Age 15

Who can argue with that last statement? But it raises an interesting question. If you knew (with full certainty) that this would be your last day on this earth, how would you live it? Would you spend the day in Bible study and prayer? Talking with people about Christ? Relaxing with your family? Or would you spend it washing clothes, cleaning the house, going to work and doing all the “mundane” things that you do every day?

We are told to “watch” at all times, knowing that the second coming of Christ will be as unexpected as a “thief in the night” (I Thess 5:1-6). It could be within the next few hours! And since none of us are promised a certain number of years, this may well be our last day of life on this earth. So how should that affect the way we live?

If we really believed that, it would cause us to rearrange our priorities. It would cause us to ask ourselves, “Is what I am doing important from an eternal viewpoint?” Mundane tasks such as washing our clothes remain necessary, but we all find ourselves spending much of our time doing things that seem to be important at the moment (from an earthly perspective), but which have no eternal significance.

“Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober……For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him. Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.” (1 Thess. 5:6,9-11)

Thought for the Day

I thought you would enjoy the following list of “Rules and Regulations for Teachers in 1872”:

1. Teachers each day will fill lamps, clean chimneys, and trim wicks.

2. Each teacher will bring a bucket of water and scuttle of coal for the day’s sessions.

3. Make your pens carefully: you may whittle nibs to the individual taste of pupils.

4. Men teachers may take one evening each week for courting purposes, or two evenings a week if they go to church regularly.

5. After 10 hours in school, the teachers spend the remaining time reading the Bible or other good books.

6. Women teachers who marry or engage in unseemly conduct will be dismissed.

7. Each teacher should lay aside from each pay a goodly sum of his earnings for his benefit during his declining years so that he will not become a burden on society.

8. Any teacher who smokes, uses liquor in any form, frequents pool or public halls, or get shaved in a barber shop will give good reason to suspect his worth, intentions, integrity and honesty.

9. The teacher who performs his labors faithfully and without fault for five years will be given an increase of 25 cents per week in his pay, providing the Board of Education approves.

I was intrigued by the wording of #9 above. It sounded somewhat familiar to me. Then it dawned on me that there is a similarity to what Jesus had to say to the seven churches of Asia Minor in Revelation 2 and 3.

“Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” (Rev.2:10b)

“…[T]hey shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.” (Rev. 3:4-5)

There are a couple of significant differences, though, between the promise given to teachers in 1872 and the promises given by Jesus. Jesus doesn’t require that we live “without fault” (and oh, how I’m thankful for that!). The reward that Jesus promises is considerably better than 25 cents for every five years of service (and I’m thankful for that as well!). And it’s not a matter of gaining the approval of a group of men. The only approval that matters is the smile we’ll see on our Father’s face.

Father, thank you for the promises that you have given — not just the promise of a crown or of white garments, but the promise of an opportunity to be in your presence, to be held in your arms. I don’t live before you “without fault”, so I thank you for your grace as I seek to live faithfully as your child. I commit all that I am and all that I have to be used in your service. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Have a great day!

Reliability

Yugo (yoo’-go)
n. 1) Small, economical, Yugoslavian-built automobile.
v. 1) What doesn’t happen when you press the accelerator.
~~~
Q. How do you double the value of a Yugo?
A. Fill the tank with gas!
~~~

What do Yugos have in common with Ferraris?
– A Ferrari can go from 0 to 60 in 4 seconds.
– A Yugo can go from 0 to 4 in 60 seconds.

Actually, a Yugo CAN accelerate as fast as a Ferrari, if you give it a
fast enough running start, so it clears the cliff’s edge…
~~~
A man entered an auto parts store…
Man: “I need a windshield wiper blade for a Yugo.”
Clerk: “Well, only if you throw $20 into the trade.”
~~~

Q. Why does a Yugo have rear a window defroster?
A. To keep your hands warm as you push it.
~~~
Q. What comes with every Yugo User’s Manual?
A. The bus schedule.
Having a reputation for being inexpensive isn’t much consolation if it
is accompanied by a reputation for having a lack of power and being
unreliable. Reliability is one of the qualities we look for when we
purchase a car. After all, what good is a car that gets 60 miles to the
gallon if it breaks down before we get where we’re going?
In the scriptures, reliability is also one of the most important
qualities a person can have. We admire someone who keeps their promises.
Someone whom we can count on to do what they say they’ll do. Someone who
is trustworthy.
Fortunately, we serve a God with all those qualities.
“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He
who promised is faithful.” (Heb. 10:23)
“If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.” (2
Tim. 2:13)
May the reliability and faithfulness of God motivate you to exhibit
those same qualities in your own life.
SO MANY VALUABLE POSSESSIONS
This comes from the file of “stupid criminals”:
Waylon Prendergast, 37, of Tampa, Florida, committed a spur-of-the-moment robbery while on his way home from a late-night drinking session.  A very inebriated Mr. Prendergast forced his way into the house through an open upstairs window, filling a suitcase with cash and valuables before setting the living room on fire to cover his tracks.  He then escaped through the back door and made his way home, chuckling all the way.  Only as he turned the corner into his own street, however, and discovered three fire engines outside his house, did he realize that in his drunkenness he had, in fact, burgled and ignited his own property.  His comment:  “I had no idea I had so many valuable possessions.”
While we may not do anything quite that stupid (at least nothing that makes the national newspapers), there are times when Christians need to stop and reflect, coming to same conclusion Mr. Prendergast did:  “I had no idea I had so many valuable possessions.”
From family and friends to material comforts (like electricity and running water),  from our basic needs (like food) to luxuries other generations never dreamed of (like the computer you’re sitting at right now), from the freedoms we enjoy to the jobs we hold, there is much that we have been blessed with that we take for granted.
Even beyond the physical blessings, there is so much that God has given us through Jesus Christ.  As Paul wrote,
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.” (Ephesians 1:3)
Truly, I had no idea I had so many valuable possessions.  “God, forgive me for taking so much of it for granted.”
“At the name of Jesus every knee should bow…” Philippians 2:10
Mike Benson, Editor
V. P. BLACK MADE the following observation…
“When David went against the Philistines and defeated them he returned home.  The
women came out of the cities of Israel singing and dancing and saying, ‘Saul has
slain his thousands, but David has slain his ten thousands.’  When Saul heard the
first part of the song, his heart was lifted up with pride, for they were singing, ‘Saul
has slain his thousands.’  But there was a second stanza.  The first stanza was no
doubt the sweetest music that Saul had ever heard.  He got ready for the second
stanza, and the second stanza went like this, ‘But David has slain his ten thousands.’
From that day forward Saul began to envy David.”
What a great team Saul and David could have been.  However, envy got into the way.
Let’s be sure that we don’t let the second stanza ruin our song. Wade L. Webster, “
The Second Stanza,” Riches From My Reading — The Searcher, Sept. 19, 2010
“Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?
SING PRAISE TO THE LORD!
I heard about a congregation where the preacher and the song leader weren’t getting along.  As time went by, this began to spill over into the worship service.
One week, the preacher preached on commitment and how we all should dedicate ourselves to the service of God.  The song leader led the song, “I Shall not be Moved.”
The next week, the preacher preached on giving and how we all should gladly contribute to the work of the Lord.  The song leader led the song, “Jesus Paid it All.”
The third week, the preacher preached on gossiping and how we should all watch our tongues.  The song leader led the song, “I Love to Tell the Story.”
With all this going on, the preacher became very disgusted over the situation and the following Sunday told the congregation that he was considering resigning.  The song leader led the song, “Oh Why Not Tonight?”
As it came to pass, the preacher did indeed resign.  The next week he informed the church that it was Jesus who led him there and it was Jesus that was taking him away.  The song leader led the song, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.”
I have several brethren here in Fayetteville that do an excellent job picking out songs to go with my lesson each Sunday morning, so I hope none of them ever gets mad at me!  🙂
As is obvious above, the words of songs have meaning.  The songs that we sing provide us a wonderful opportunity to express our praise to God, as well as to encourage one another.  The Psalmists certainly recognized that great truth as they exhort us often to offer the fruit of our lips to the glory of God.
“Sing praises to God, sing praises!
Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
For God is the King of all the earth;
Sing praises with understanding.”
Georgia Barnette Offering for Louisiana Missions
Multi-Housing Ministries, Louisiana
“II Corinthians 5:17-18 “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; old things have passed away, and look, new things have come.  Now everything is from God, who reconciled Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.”
Multi-housing-03The command to share the Gospel with all the lost is leading several churches and groups to reach out to those living in multi-housing areas.  This group is one of the largest unreached peoples in America today with surveys concluding that 95% of multi-family dwellers do not go to church anywhere.
Through small-group Bible studies in apartment complexes, prayer walks, prayer groups, mentoring and moving assistance, this need is being met in Louisiana.  Prayer walks in the Shreveport/Bossier City area have opened doors for ministry, working relationships with property management and evangelistic presentations on the street.
Ministry in Lafayette, through “ServnLove,” has helped to discover needs of people “living in the gaps.”  ServnLove has established three Bible studies and a mentoring program for widows.
Remember to pray for:
  • apartment managers to be receptive to ministry on their properties;
  • volunteers to be part of the ministry through weekly Bible studies;
  • God’s continued strengthening of ministry leaders;
  • sponsoring associations; and
  • creative entries into the lives of families living in multi-family housing areas.
Our Georgia Barnette State Missions Offering makes it possible to work where it counts in multi-family housing areas.
Thought for the Day by Alan Smith
Lostness
A golfer, playing a round by himself, is about to tee off, and a greasy little salesman runs up to him, and yells, “Wait! Before you tee off, I have something really amazing to show you!”
The golfer, annoyed, says, “What is it?”
“It’s a special golf ball,” says the salesman. “You can never lose it!”
“Whattaya mean,” scoffs the golfer, “you can never lose it? What if you hit it into the water?”
“No problem,” says the salesman. “It floats, and it detects where the shore is, and spins towards it.”
“Well, what if you hit it into the woods?”
“Easy,” says the salesman. “It emits a beeping sound, and you can find it with your eyes closed.”
“Okay,” says the golfer, impressed. “But what if your round goes late and it gets dark?”
“No problem, sir, this golf ball glows in the dark! I’m telling you, you can never lose this golf ball!”
The golfer buys it at once. “Just one question,” he says to the salesman. “Where did you get it?”
“I found it!”
Maybe someday someone will invent a golf ball that can never be lost, but until then we will all have to deal with losing things — golf balls, car keys, glasses, etc. We also have to deal with a lost humanity. I find it interesting that the one term Jesus used most often to describe those who are outside of Christ is the word “lost”.
In Luke 15, Jesus elaborated on this idea by telling three parables — the parable of the lost sheep, the parable of the lost coin, and the parable of the lost (prodigal) son. The point has often been made that those three parables demonstrate three different ways of being lost — through unintentional wandering (the sheep), through the negligence of someone else (the coin), or through willful disobedience (the son).
However, the point of those three parables is not so much about our lostness as they are about the fact that our God is willing to search for us and bring us back into a relationship with Him. If we will truly see the world around us as “lost”, it will change our perspective as well. Think about the last time you knew of a child that was missing. When a child is lost, we don’t ask what race the child is. It doesn’t matter — the child is lost! We don’t ask the child’s economic status. It doesn’t matter — the child is lost! We don’t ask what the child may or may not have done wrong. It doesn’t matter — the child is lost! All that matters is that we find that child and bring him/her home safely.
Seeing a world around us as “lost” will change the way we see them. The scribes and Pharisees looked at the tax collectors and sinners and saw terrible, ugly people. Jesus saw people who were lost. All that mattered to him was that he bring them home safely.
“For the Son of man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:10)
Father, thank you for diligently searching for me and for bringing me home to you. Fill me with your love so that I may care enough to seek out those around me who are lost. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Have a great day!
Levels of Toleration
Thought for the Day
Written by Alan Smith
Reposted from Websits
Thought For The Day At a computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, “If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon.”
In response to Bill’s comments, General Motors issued a press release stating: If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics (and I just love this part):
1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.
2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.
3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.
4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.
5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive – but would run on only five percent of the roads.
6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single “This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation” warning light.
7. The airbag system would ask “Are you sure?” before deploying.
8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.
9. Every time a new car was introduced, car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.
10. You’d have to press the “Start” button to turn the engine off.
It’s amazing, isn’t it, what we tolerate in some things we use (like Microsoft Windows) that we would never tolerate in other things we use (like our automobiles)? Then again, it shouldn’t be too surprising because I find that there are many things which I tolerate in some people that I would never tolerate in others.
For example, if someone I don’t particularly like passes me on the street and doesn’t wave or say “hi”, I get easily offended and assume that he is just being snobby. If a good friend does the same thing, though, I assume that he must have something on his mind and he was merely distracted. If someone I love dearly accidentally trips and kicks me in the shin, I think nothing of it. If someone else does it, though, I quickly assume they’re clumsy and inconsiderate. It’s true, isn’t it? We tolerate things from people we love that we would never tolerate from people we don’t love.
Could it be that one of the reasons we have so many conflicts in the church is that love is lacking? When love is missing, we are quick to assume the worst, we tolerate nothing and we are quick to find fault. Patience is non-existent. Forgiveness is difficult. Love, however, truly does “cover a multitude of sins.” (I Peter 4:8)
I like the way GOD’S WORD translates this passage from Paul’s writings: “As holy people whom God has chosen and loved, be sympathetic, kind, humble, gentle, and patient. Put up with each other, and forgive each other if anyone has a complaint. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. Above all, be loving. This ties everything together perfectly.” (Colossians 3:12-14)
Are you having trouble “putting up” with folks around you? May your love for others increase so that your level of toleration may increase as well.
–Alan
EVER WONDER WHAT would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phone…?
What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets?
What if we flipped through it several times a day?
What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it?
What if we used it to receive messages from the text?
What if we treated it like we couldn’t live without it?
What if we give (it) to kids as gifts?
What if we used it when we traveled?
What if we used it in case of an emergency?
There is something to make you go …hmmm…where IS my Bible?
Oh, and one more thing.
Unlike our cell phone, we don’t have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill.
