Whatever It Takes…Reaching the One

March 3-10, 2013

Scripture: Acts 8:26-31 (HCSB)

26An angel of the Lord spoke to Philip: ‘Get up and go south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.’ 27So he got up and went. There was an Ethiopian man, a eunuch and high official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to worship in Jerusalem 28and was sitting in his chariot on his way home, reading the prophet Isaiah aloud. 29The Spirit told Philip, ‘Go and join that chariot.’ 30When Philip ran up to it, he heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, ‘Do you understand what you’re reading?’ 31‘How can I,’ he said, ‘unless someone guides me?’ So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.”

Baptist Theological Seminary of Malawi Endowment

Overview: The Baptist Theological Seminary of Malawi plays a vital role in reaching Malawi for Christ, both in providing leaders for existing work and in reaching the lost. The IMB has recently realized a vision of nationalizing this institution and they are currently self-supporting. The seminary depends solely on student fees, income generating projects, donations from small Malawian Baptist churches and the existing endowment. The Dowdy endowment income has been greatly reduced in recent years diminishing its ability to help provide a seminary education for Malawian Baptists. Student fees have steadily risen causing the student enrollment to drop from 40 to approximately 25 students. At current rates of return on investment a gift of only $575 will fund one week of education for a student for years to come. $20,000 will provide a full term for a student for years. $60,000 will educate one student each year for years to come. There could be no better investment.

Mr. Kenneth Felker is hospitalized again.  Please pray for him again.

Baptist Center Dakar Senegal

Overview: The Baptist Center is located in Grand Yoff, in the heart of Dakar, in one of the poorest and most densely populated municipalities of the city. Though the spiritual and physical needs are difficult to comprehend, we are blessed to be part of what the Lord is doing in this place. This request provides donors with the opportunity to share in work that has tremendous potential for expanding the Kingdom, as well as for the opportunity ‘to do unto the least of these’. This is an urban ministry that we believe will impact hundreds, perhaps thousands through the support and participation of our fellow Baptists. We are requesting funding for operations for the Baptist Center in Grand Yoff. For watchmen, utilities, and maintenance, we will need $55.90 per day/ $392.30 per week/$1,700 / month = $20,400 / year = $61,200 / 3 years.

Mike More was in Memphis today to check on the brain tumor behind his eye.  The good news is that it continues to shrink.  Robin thanks you for praying for them today as they saw the doctor and for all the prayers since Mike learned there was a tumor.

If you are keeping up with Connor Corkern on Facebook, today would be a good day to read The Adventures of Connor Man and to pray for Connor and his family.

There were 20 ladies at the birthday party yesterday.  It’s fun to celebrate birthdays together as we share a meal.  The March birthday party will be March 26th.  Mark your calendar.

Today, we will be feeding students at the BCM at SLU.  If you have a college student in the family, please tell them to come get a free meal of jambalaya, white beans, salad, rolls, cake, and tea.  The two pots of jambalaya will be cooked in front of the BCM.  The aroma of jambalaya usually draws in a big crowd.  We hope so.  That’s what we will be there for.

Bibles for East Asian Peoples

Overview: In one area of East Asia alone, we are averaging 30,000 new believers every month, and this equates to close to 42 new believers every hour. In many cases, Bibles are not available for purchase through one of the TSPM Book Stores, because the government may restrict the printing of Bibles to only 50,000 per year which would not even meet the needs of our own work for two months. In these situations, many believers share their Bibles and/or there are only Bibles available at the house church meeting place. Why would we deprive a new believer of having their own Bible? These funds will allow us to work through appropriate channels to get Bibles to those areas where we are seeing a harvest so that God’s Word is available to them.

May this beautiful day be wonderful for each of you.  God will be with you all day long.

Update on Dan Turner from Ladd

For those of you who have been wondering, Dan Turner is doing well! He continues to work hard and amaze his doctors and therapists. His spirits are good and he’s determined! He’s steadily improving with time and therapy. He is truly an example of God’s faithfulness. Thank you all for your continued prayers!

Today is the “Young” Ladies’ Birthday Party to honor those with February birthdays.  We will meet at Nyla’s at 11:00 to celebrate.  The ladies being honored are Judy Fowler, Peggy Alford, Ora Lee Wilson, Linda Callihan, Karen Miller, Beverly Rohrbacker, Debbie Miller, and Naomi Tolar.

Tomorrow is the day that FBC, Kentwood prepares a jambalaya meal for the students at the BCM at SLU.  If you have items to bring for the meal, please have them in the church kitchen by 9:00 A.M. Wednesday.  Thanks!

90 Days of Bible Readings: Day 54

Isaiah 66:19 – Jeremiah 10:13

Baptist Medical Center in Nalerigu Ghana

Overview: In northeast Ghana, there is little hope for relief without the Baptist Medical Center. It has been an oasis since 1958 in an impoverished and destitute area. Physical needs bring patients to the hospital, but their ultimate healing is found in God’s message of salvation that draws them to Himself. Through the ministry of the Baptist Medical Center, hundreds of thousands have been touched and lives have been changed for eternity. As a follow up to those who have made decisions for Christ, we have a church planter catalyst implementing strategies to disciple and encourage these new believers. He will work with the local Baptists to disciple them as well as develop leadership training to plant and grow churches. The Baptist Medical Center must continue to reach out to those brought right to their doorstep, most of whom are lost. We cannot neglect this vital ministry and Christian witness in this needy and often forgotten part of the world.

Your prayers make a difference in many lives.  Thanks for praying for all the various needs each day.  As I heard in Sunday School this week.  God is the one who decides how to answer each prayer.  He has the final decision.

If  you are on Facebook, take a moment to read some on “The Adventures of Conner Man”.  Then, thank God for this precious life and the ability to inspire so many.  Thank God for family that loves and encourages him each day.

Here’s an update on Callie Cole.  What a blessing her mother has been!

http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/calliecole

A younger friend we know from  Roseland has been volunteering with Red Cross in Hattisburg following the tornado.  This is what she posted last night.  We are proud of your time in Hattisburg, Lucricia.

“A church Pastor in Hattiesburg told his congregation to get into the closet for shelter after the tornado left they opened the closet door and the entire church was blown away except the closet …… God is good and He protects His people!!! Praise God!!! The entire church is gone except the closet….. Not touched in any kinda way!!! Thank you Jesus!!!”

The weather has been more turbulent here lately that most days in Louisiana.  Take precautions when advised to do so.

As we are counting inches of rain, the Hatchels have a ruler in the snow in their yard.  It shows ten inches of snow!  That ruler and the “white stuff” make me appreciate our rain!

Balkan Platforms

Overview: There is tremendous lostness in the Balkan region (Southern Europe). In many cases, legitimate access to these countries is very difficult. The right platforms provide not only that access, but natural (supernatural!) avenues for building relationships and sharing the gospel with people. The fervent prayer of IMB personnel in Kosovo, Bosnia, Greece, Albania, and Macedonia is that as development and educational projects are carried out under the auspices of these platforms that many people would come to faith and a wave of multiplying churches would be planted.

A friend and former pastor, Bro. Chip, celebrated 25 years at his present church, FBC, King’s Mountain, NC, yesterday.  He served at Roseland five years, approximately  nine years at his home church in NC, and now twenty-five years.  God has really blessed his family and his ministry.  I’m thankful to have known him.  We visited with Martha and him last summer when he was here for the Southern Baptist Convention in New Orleans.  We are thankful and blessed for this long-time friendship.
Have a blessed day!  Be the “Jesus” someone is looking for in life!

Rusty Williams from Linda

I just talked to Rusty. He is feeling better. He is still in ICU, but hopes to go to a room, tomorrow. Thank goodness we got him to the hospital when we did. Thanks to Dondi for staying with him tonight until Ryan gets back. Rusty, Jonathan and Brody had plans to go to the Monster Truck show in New Orleans, tonight. Ryan took Brody and Colby. Russton also went.

Jennie and Robert Frohn from JoEllen

Jennie is still at Hoods but she is slowly improving with her speech and with her walking. Robert is doing good. He sits with Jennie all day at the hospital and gives her encouragement. They still need all of our prayers.
