Susan of Lara’s Gowns for Smiles was able to buy fabric for 70 new gowns yesterday.  That’s 70 children who will be richly blessed to be “stylish” while undergoing cancer treatment.  At the rate Susan sews, that fabric won’t last long.  There are baskets at FBC, Kentwood for you to add kid-patterned fabric or checks can be turned in to the church office.  FBC, Kentwood is the collection site for the Northshore.  Pass the word along.

Mrs. Elsie Cooper passed away.  Please be in prayer for the family.  I’ll post arrangements when they are available.

The Missions Fair and Rally last night was AWESOME!  I’m not using that word lightly.  Seeing what area churches are doing in missions and learning of opportunities we could assist with was so varied and interesting.  I was thankful Susan, and her husband Jimmy, from Lara’s Gowns for Smiles drove a 100 miles to be there and another 100 to get home!  I also also blessed Paul and Sandy brought Zach to represent Zach’s Lidz for Kids.  (Zach also had grandparents there to support him.)  These two projects touched many hearts and will be assisted by people from our association.  Thank-you, Jesus for allowing us to learn so much in such a short time.

The Missions Rally was an AWESOME worship time.  The Hispanic singers were good and reminded me of being in churches in Europe with the Hatchels.  I would recognize the tune to songs, but not know the “foreign” words, which would be the English words I was familiar with.  Many people were picking up on the Spanish and singing along with them.  The “Seminarians”  led in worship in a different style and certainly were an inspiration to us.  I could listen to and worship with them for hours.  Then, Dr. Chuck Kelly’s message was so cleanly spoken about our role as Christian disciples.  Dr. Kelly used one of his favorite “Hebrew” word, “WOW”, several times.  What a way to end the Lord’s Day!

The next part will be sharing some very personal thoughts, so skip this paragraph if you choose.  Zach Morgan is the son of two of my former students, Paul and Sandy Bennett Morgan.  It was so good to see them and to know how they have guided Zach.  I’m not at liberty to tell you what’s next for Zach, but count on seeing him in the future.  Susan, of Lara’s Gowns for Smiles, has become a computer friend.  She spends four days a week sewing gowns for children.  She started a ministry and has really stayed with it every week.  I don’t regularly give four days a week to a ministry, so I admire her for her dedication.  Dr. Greg Woodward, who led the Seminarians, lived down the street from the Hatchels at NOBTS.  His wife led my grandchildren in a musical last year at FBC, NO.  His children were friends of my grandchilden on campus.  Dr. and Dr. Kelly were always so gracious to the Hatchels.  Jennie had opportunities to speak in classes Mrs. Dr. Kelly taught.  I saw Christian friends from Hillsdale, Kedron, The Lord’s Church, Bethel, New Zion, East Fork, Kentwood, ….  What a great night for us to see those we have know and how they serve the Lord!

I wanted to share about last night last night when I got home, but was afraid I would “write a book” if I wrote at that time.  What a blessing to have been a part of it a small way!  Oh, I forgot to mention the crowd of local Christians made  it necessary to add chairs down in the auditorium!

A resident of Kentwood, she died on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at University Hospital in New Orleans. She was born April 28, 1989 in Hammond and was 23 years of age. She is survived by her parents, Lisa and Tommy Grice, Kentwood; grandfather, William “Bill” Godwin, Kentwood; nephew, Jesse Wayne Hemphill, Corinth, MS; aunts and uncles, Cathy Brooks and husband, George, Kentwood, Billy Godwin and wife, Sandra, Corinth, MS, Monteen Castella and husband, Bennie Ray, Kentwood, Johnny Knight, Jackson, MS, William Neal, Brooksville, FL, Lloyd Grice and wife, Darlene, Harrisburg, PA, Dorothy Lee Grice, Kentwood, Betty Lou Grice, Thomasville, GA, Sadie Grice, Kentwood, and Renee Givens, Mt. Ruby Harris Young (mother of Juanice Skiller)

Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home

Ruby Harris Young, 92 years old of Hammond, Louisiana, passed away Thursday, April 4, 2013, at North Oaks Medical Center. She was born November 22, 1920, in Dubach, Louisiana.

Mrs. Young was a faithful member of Woodland Park Baptist Church and the Fidelis Sunday School class for 54 years. She was retired from the Tangipahoa Parish School System and was a member of the Tangipahoa Parish Retired Teachers Association.

Surviving are her daughters, Juanice Young Skinner and husband Johnny, and Cheryl Young Brown, both of Hammond; son, Bruce Young and wife Jan of Kansas City, Kansas; grandsons, Matthew, Justin and Jeremy Skinner; granddaughter, Angela Young Smith; 3 great-grandchildren, Kaylee and Hunter Smith and Nathaniel Matthew Skinner; 3 nieces; 6 nephews; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ray and Dorothy Young.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Lee Young; parents, Alf and Dewey Autrey Harris; brother, Dr. Edward L. Harris; and a nephew.

Friends will be received on Sunday, April 7, 2013, from 1:00 pm until funeral services begin at 3:00 pm at Woodland Park Baptist Church in Hammond.

Interment will follow in Holly Gardens Cemetery, Hammond.

Memorials gifts may be made to the Woodland Park Baptist Church Building Fund or a charity of your choice.

The East Fork Baptist Church Yard Sale will be Friday (7-4) only, due to a funeral.  Plan to eat a sandwich while you are there.

Shelton Day is home and feeling good.  Thank you for praying for him.

Joy Moore says her dad, Paul Boudreaux, is doing better.  She is taking this opportunity to attend church with him.  Pray for them as they worship together.

Buddy Morris got home late this afternoon.  Thank God all went well and that the doctor decided to check the heart during the procedure.

Peggy and Walton Alford are doing well in her knee replacement recovery.  They have a little longer before they can get back in their norman routine.

Fran Walker is home from the hospital and feeling much better.  Pray for her continued improvement.

Gloria Gill is still having some health issues, but is working at getting well.  Pray for her.

Ruby says Jimmy Schwartz enjoys having phone calls.  Pray for the Schwartz family.

If you do Facebook, you may want to check out “Prayers for Eli”.  He is a five year old from Ohio who has recently been diagnosed with a rare for of leukemia.  Whether or not you do Facebook, please begin to pray for this young man and his family.

I don’t know who wrote this story, but it will bring a smile to your face.

Potato Chips

A little boy wanted to meet God. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived, so he packed his suitcase with a bag of potato chips and a six-pack of root beer and started his journey.

When he had gone about three blocks, he met an old man. He was sitting in the park, just staring at some pigeons. The boy sat down next to him and opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink from his root beer when he noticed that the old man looked hungry, so he offered him some chips. He gratefully accepted it and smiled at him.

His smile was so pretty that the boy wanted to see it again, so he offered him a root beer. Again, he smiled at him. The boy was delighted! They sat there all afternoon eating and smiling, but they never said a word.

As twilight approached, the boy realized how tired he was and he got up to leave; but before he had gone more than a few steps, he turned around, ran back to the old man, and gave him a hug. He gave him his biggest smile ever.

When the boy opened the door to his own house a short time later, his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face. She asked him, “What did you do today that made you so happy?”

He replied, “I had lunch with God.” But before his mother could respond, he added, “You know what? He’s got the most beautiful smile I’ve ever seen!”

Meanwhile, the old man, also radiant with joy, returned to his home. His son was stunned by the look of peace on his face and he asked, “Dad, what did you do today that made you so happy?”

He replied “I ate potato chips in the park with God.” However, before his son responded, he added, “You know, he’s much younger than I expected.”

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime! Embrace all equally!

Have lunch with God … bring the potato chips.

Pamela Eileen Rambo
(March 10, 1959 – March 29, 2013)

Our beloved Pamela Rambo, 54 of Lubbock went to be with the Lord on March 29, 2013. Family and friends will gather to celebrate her life on Friday, April 5, 2013 from 6-8:30 p.m. at New Zion Baptist Church, Kentwood, La. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Sat. April 6, 2013 at New Zion Baptist Church followed by committal services in New Zion Cemetery. Pamela was born on March 10, 1959 to Harry and Wilma (Bridges) Chand in Metropolis, Ill. She graduated from Nederland High School in 1977, where she played volleyball and tennis. She married Kelly Rambo on March 31, 1990 in Dallas, Tx. In 2004, Pamela graduated with honors from Eastfield Junior College, Dallas, Tx. with an Associates of Arts degree and a year later, she earned a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M Commerce, Magna Cum Laude. Pamela owned and operated the Black Chandelier in Lubbock. She also worked as a newspaper rep and a publisher for the Terrell Tribune. She was an award winning freelance photographer. She enjoyed interior design and was an avid shopper. The most important thing in her life was her family, being a mother and grandmother “GIGI”. She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Carl Rambo. Survivors include her husband, Kelly; a daughter, Jordana Stewart and husband Matthew, two sons, Shawn Corbello and fiancée Courtney Slaughter and Travis Rambo; Tx.; a step daughter, Lauren Arden and husband Tim; her parents Harry and Wilma Chand; three grandsons, Hendrix Stewart and Tye and Tony Arden; a sister, Diane Berwick and husband Vernon; a brother, Eric Chand and wife Cheryl; mother-in-law, Barbara Rambo and numerous nieces and nephews.

 Rainy days sometimes cause a change of scheduled plans.  Enjoy this day God has sent us.  Just think how happy all those newly planted seeds are with the rain.  They should be sticking their heads up in a couple of days.
