If you cheat even a little,

A God-blessed America: obligations and responsibilities
Richard Land

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Baptist Press)–America is fundamentally distinct from all other countries in its founding, in its national life, and in the values, rights and privileges it confers upon its citizens. In other words, America is exceptional. And if it is exceptional in its domestic character, in what it offers to immigrants in search of a better life, then it would follow that America is exceptional in what it has to offer to the global community.

America is not an ethnicity or mere geography, but a creed, a set of first principles to which we pledge allegiance — freedom, human dignity, self-government, and equality. Anyone who pledges allegiance to these values can consider himself or herself an “American.”

America has been blessed by God in unique ways — we are not just another country, but neither are we God’s special people. I do not believe that America is God’s chosen nation. God established one chosen nation and people: the Jews. We are not the new Israel. We cannot assume “God is on our side.” We are not God’s gift to the world.

America does not have a special claim on God. Millions of Americans do, however, believe God has a special claim on them — and their country.

The concept of American “exceptionalism” was first popularized in the early 19th century by Alexis de Tocqueville, although the idea was hardly invented by him. The roots of this view go back to the beginnings of Puritan settlements — how else do you explain the Puritan understanding of a “shining city on a hill” to light the way for the Old World? Or Francis Scott Key’s imagery of “the heav’n rescued land” in our national anthem, which he wrote in 1814 after he saw the Stars and Stripes still waving over Fort McHenry after a night of fierce bombardment from British ships?

American exceptionalism is the understanding that America is a unique nation with a unique sense of purpose that started with the nation’s settlement and has since morphed through various meanings, all of them centered on the observation that America is distinct from other countries in the world — in its founding, in its government, in its social and economic structures, and in its religious and cultural character.

America has been blessed in manifold ways. When you look at our resources, our protection by two oceans, our standard of living, can you argue that America has not been uniquely and providentially blessed? The natural resources that lie within the confines of our borders are without parallel anywhere in the world: not just rich, arable land, but vast resources of iron, coal and oil under the ground. We didn’t put them there; we were just led to the place where they were.

We have had the opportunity to enjoy them and to benefit people around the world with them. Perhaps the most fertile land on the planet is our Great Plains.

We have become the breadbasket for the world. We feed much of the world’s population, in part because we are good farmers, but also because we believe in private ownership of land and property. Can you name a nation that in any way can claim to have been the recipient of God’s unearned blessings to the measure that we have been?

The blessings are not just material, however. It is remarkable that the one generation that produced our Founding Fathers emerged and put together the Constitution that has served us so well for more than two centuries and has brought unparalleled freedom for an unparalleled number of people — unequaled by any other country in the world.

We enjoy freedoms that most of us have not risked our lives to establish, protect or preserve. All of us, unless we are immigrants to this country, have by the providence of birth been bequeathed an incredible legacy. Over the last two and a half centuries, there has been no other country in the world within which such a high percentage of the population has had the guaranteed freedoms we possess: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom of assembly. We have guaranteed freedoms in our Constitution that even Canadians and Britons don’t have.

There was either a fortuitous or a providential set of circumstances in the development and rise of this nation. Since I’m a Christian, I believe in providence more than fortune. I believe that it was a uniquely providential set of circumstances that allowed the flourishing of this triumph of freedom and the dignity of human beings. It certainly didn’t happen that way in the French Revolution, and I believe it is no coincidence that the philosophy and convictions fueling that revolution were not based on a transcendent divine authority. They were based in human reason (or what the revolutionaries mistook for reason) alone, and the upheaval quickly degenerated into a maelstrom of chaos, violence and power struggles.

The Founding Fathers of the American Revolution, by contrast, affirmed that human rights are not mere human constructions, but are unalienable rights conferred by God.

Government could not create those rights; all it could do was recognize, support and protect them. This idea of divinely ordained rights had not taken root anywhere else in the world. It was a new and unique concept.

“Blessings,” by definition, are undeserved. From the richness of our undeserved legacy comes obligation. If we have been given much, we are obligated to give much to others. If we love our neighbors as ourselves, we will seek not only to preserve and protect our liberties, but to assist others in their efforts to attain these same liberties for themselves.

American exceptionalism is not a delusion of national grandiosity. American exceptionalism is not a doctrine of pride and privilege. It is a belief that God has blessed this nation in amazing ways, and those blessings invoke a reciprocal obligation and responsibility to seek to share, but not impose, the blessings of freedom and democracy with others around the world.

Let’s all pause this Fourth of July weekend to give praise and gratitude to our Heavenly Father for the manifold blessings of being an American and to say thank you to all those who have sacrificed to protect and defend those precious liberties.

(Richard Land is president of the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission.)

Thank God for our great nation and pray we can continue to have a great, God-fearing nation for many years.  Also, pray for those in other nations to have the opportunity to know and serve out great God.

“I have set you as a light to the Gentiles, that you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 13:47)

WORLD LEADERS. “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for Prime Minister Joachim Rafael Branco of Sao Tome and Principe (Gulf of Guinea, western Africa).

HIDDEN MOUNTAIN PEOPLE OF EAST ASIA. Ask the Father to impress upon local believers not only the great need to reach their neighbors and friends for Jesus, but also the great need to go to the remote places and do whatever it takes to reach the Hidden Mountain people with the Gospel.

KASHMIRI MUSLIMS OF INDIA (KASH-meer-ee). Give thanks to God for answering your prayers by providing amazing opportunities to interact with several government agencies and tourism groups in the area through a visiting expert. After visiting several new areas in the valley, workers believe that a new project might open doors in new villages for local believers to earn a livable wage, and for lost families living in poverty to hear the Good News.

Pray for Jennie and the children as they prepare to travel here for a brief family visit.

Thanks for taking time to read this and to pray.  If you have something you would like to share, please feel free to contact me so I can post it.  Have a wonderful day!

Donald Cutrer and KaLeigh Powers

Donald had to have a second surgery on his knee Wednesday as the infection was getting really bad again. He is still in the hospital. I went to visit him yesterday and he tells me he is doing fine, but I was there when they re-dressed his knee and it sure looked bad. I am sure the good Lord and the medications will see him through this. He has what they call MARSA and some of it had gotten to the bone, but the doctors assured us they had gotten it all this time. He will be on antibiotics for another 6 weeks which will be given via an infusion. Please continue to pray for him.
I took KaLeigh this morning for her stitches to be removed, but the doctor wanted to leave them another week. She was very disappointed about that. Otherwise she is doing fine. Thanks again for the prayers.

“Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth.” (Psalm 54:2)

WORLD LEADERS. “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for Prime Minister Sailele Malielegaoi Tuila’epa of Samoa (southwestern Pacific Ocean, between Hawaii and New Zealand).

CITY OF SOUTHERN SONG, CHINA. There are more than 30,000 university students on a campus where Christian workers teach, and only a handful of students have ever heard the name of the one holy God. Students are warned against foreign religions and encouraged to report anyone who talks about Christianity. Give thanks to God that some students have formed a weekly Bible-study group. Pray that the group can find a safe meeting place. Pray for each of these students to open their hearts to receive His free gift of salvation. chopsticks@pobox.com

LAST FRONTIER. As workers continue to live and teach among a Last Frontier people group that is the majority people group in their area, they see minority groups that have believers and teachers among them. But this majority group is still without a church or a Bible study group. Through IMB World Hunger Funds, a “pig project” is being started in this difficult-to-reach area among this majority people group. Through this pig project, in addition to skills being taught for raising pigs, spiritual principles will be taught to young believers and training will be provided to them so they can go out and share physical and spiritual knowledge with their lost neighbors. Please remember Mr. B and his family as they prepare to move to the pig project site and begin to teach. Ask for physical and spiritual safety. Intercede for the authorities as well, as it was less than three years ago that Mr. B was thrown out of this area for having a house church in his relative’s home.

Have a great day!  Count your blessing today!

“At the name of Jesus every knee should bow…” Philippians 2:10
Mike Benson, Editor
THE APOSTLE PAUL bluntly warned the Ephesian Christians that life in the world could be a heavy battle…
The enemy of one’s spirit, he said, is not always visible.  Rather, he is often invisible, fighting from ambushes whic appear at first glance to be attractive and beneficial.  Paul’s advice: be prepared, alert, and equipped to stand firm.  To the Corinthians he said that we should never be ignorant of the enemy’s designs.  Peter agreed in his epistle, and he described the enemy as one who is like a roaring lion, “seeking whom he may devour.”  These men weren’t kidding around.  Theirs was no paranoic fantasy.  They were well aware that spiritual survival demands a dramatic effort.
The effective father also takes this kind of thing seriously, and he trains his eye to discriminate between those things that will build and those that will destroy his children’s lives.  He begins to notice repetitive hostile patterns in various areas of life which demand acute, sensitive awareness, lest from among the good things the destructive elements emerge that erode and tear at his children’s spirits.
A spiritual mine dectector might register a few things capable of exploding in a family’s face.  Gordon MacDonald, “It’s Not A Phony War,” The Effective Father, 32-33
“Be sober, be vigilant;
because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion,
seeking whom he may devour.”

HIGHLAND SINGERS OF CENTRAL ASIA. There is a “Mariam” who serves in a high post in the government. She says of her President, “He is so cut off from the real world; my heart goes out to him. What chance does he have for Light, the true Light to shine into his life? I want to be the one to share Truth with him.” He has shown her great favor. Others around her were surprised at the favor, and also surprised as to why she wasn’t using that favor to feather her nest. She was astonished. “How could I turn the favor of the President to my personal benefit when I knew full well that the only reason I had that favor was that I had been sitting there praying to Jesus, asking Him for help? I was so afraid that I was going to be disgraced, and Jesus not only did away with that, but my fears as well! How then could I use His grace and mercy for my own benefit?!” She is sincerely concerned for the ruler of her country, for his salvation. Please pray that the Lord will give her an opportunity to share Truth with the President in a meaningful way. Pray that the Lord will be glorified in her life and his! highlandsingers@gmail.com

WEDNESDAY WINDOW ON THE WORLD
IMB
June 9, 2010

* Praise the Lord for answering your prayers and enabling a Deccani Muslim-background believer and his team to record video segments that can be broadcast on local and national cable networks in India.

* Pray that someone will be willing to “walk through the fire” to do church planting in Jharia, a city in India with raging fires underground.

* Give thanks to God for the aid provided to Aymara people in Peru following torrential rains and flooding; pray for a medical clinic that will be held in the community this month.

* Those seeking to reach American peoples ask you to pray for the believers in one town to share the Gospel boldly and for the teachings of Santeria to be exposed and uprooted.

DECCANI MUSLIMS OF INDIA (deh-KAH-nee). One Deccani Muslim-background believer and a team of others have professionally recorded video segments that clearly articulate what it means to be a Christian versus being a Muslim. They address all sorts of concerns that Deccani Muslims traditionally bring up. The funding was provided locally, as was the video editing team! Please pray that local and national cable networks will accept these videos and broadcast them on their networks so that many may hear the Gospel and clearly understand what it is–and what it is not. God has blessed this Deccani Muslim-background believer and his team. Please pray that as the Gospel goes out, many will hear and respond in faith. Praise God for answering prayers and raising up more laborers with a passion for the Deccani Muslims! God will build His church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against her! http://www.go2southasia.org/

INDIA. A cross-cultural worker writes: “On my last trip to India, I discovered a city in crisis. Jharia is a city of 100,000 people in India’s Jharkhand state. Under the ground that Jharia sits on, fires are raging. Literally, coalmines are burning underneath the city. These burning mines give off heat that you can feel aboveground in certain areas. Noxious fumes drift from these mines into homes, and black soot covers large portions of Jharia. It was surreal. My eyes saw the filth, the smoke, and the horrible situation–but my mind could not fully grasp the reality of it.” There are few Christians in Jharia, and no churches or church-planting efforts. Area pastors say that Jharia has many strongholds and that it is very difficult to share the Gospel there. “To do church planting in Jharia, someone has to walk through the fire. At this point, Indian pastors are not willing to believe that the flames will not consume them. Jude 1:23a (NASB) says, ‘save others, snatching them out of the fire.’ Approximately 100,000 people need to be snatched from fire. Pray that a church will be planted in Jharia in 2010.”

AYMARA OF PERU (eye-MAH-rah). “The month of January brought torrential rains and flooding to the Altiplano (a high plateau in the Andes Mountains) of Peru,” writes a member of the Aymara Strategy Group. “Only 15 minutes away from our house, an entire community was covered in water and more than 500 families lost everything. Thank you for praying as we participated in disaster-relief efforts in this area! ‘Food for our animals’ was the most important need that was conveyed; therefore, we rented many fields for them in order to provide for them by caring for their animals. On June 10-12, we will be doing a medical clinic in this community with the help of a volunteer team. It is our hope that we can not only continue to meet their physical needs, but also their spiritual needs. Right now, there appears to be an open door into this community because of our previous relief efforts. Pray that God will use this upcoming clinic for them to learn about Him and to draw them into a saving relationship with Him.” http://www.gradysonmission.com/

AMERICAN PEOPLES. “In the inky darkness, staying on the narrow path that led from the main road to the house church was difficult, so at first I didn’t notice the massive tree looming in the shadows,” writes a member of the Caribbean Itinerant Team. “Later, during the lively worship service, when the foreign guest was introduced and the purpose of his visit announced, I realized the seriousness of the situation. This muscular, light-skinned man was a lumberjack who had been called from far away to cut down the huge tree. The house church was packed and needed to expand their space, which meant removing the gigantic ‘spirit tree’ used frequently in rituals of Santeria, a mixture of African traditional religions and the worship of saints practiced by more than half the population of this country. Because people believe anyone who cuts down the tree will die, the visitor had been summoned. Join us in prayer that believers in this town will have the courage to share the Gospel boldly and that God’s power will expose and uproot the teachings of Santeria. Pray that people will worship the Creator and not the creation.”

Thanks for praying.  You make a difference in many lives!

“As they were going along the road,

they came to a place where there was some water.

The official said, ‘Look! Here is some water.

Why can’t I be baptized?’”

~Acts 8:36-37, CEV~

Dear Intercessors, this is Eleanor Witcher of the Office of Global Prayer Strategy, expressing joy with you in the baptism of many around the world.

T planned a baptism for a small group in South Asia of about 10. He was going to baptize them very near where they live, but they all complained that the water was “dirty.” T asked them where they would like to go. They agreed that a not-too-far-away temple would be best. T told them that if they were not afraid to go there and be baptized, then he surely was not afraid. They went there and took baptism at the temple’s lake/bathing area as many looked on. Pray that many more in South Asia will obediently follow the Master.

A worker among a Last Frontier people group writes: “I had an opportunity to meet a middle school teacher who is the mother of two children. One day she told me that her older daughter, who had studied overseas, asked for her blessing to believe our Lord. She said that she gave a nod. So I asked her whether she wanted to hear more about Him. She wasn’t interested at that time. That was a year ago. Throughout on and off contact and at our Christmas gathering, she began to open her heart. Finally she decided to follow our Father. It wasn’t only her, though. Her younger daughter also committed herself. They both got baptized on the same day. Who do you think I will turn my attention to next? Yes, you are right–her husband.”

* Please pray for this school teacher’s family so that all of them will have the same heavenly Father.

* Give thanks for bold believers who are willing to proclaim their testimonies of salvation before everyone in their community.

* Intercede for those in your congregation who are currently resisting the Lord’s call to be baptized.

THE NAME WE WEAR

When the 1960s ended, many hippies moved down the coast to Santa Cruz.  They got married and had children.  But they didn’t name their children Melissa or Brett.  People in the mountains around Santa Cruz grew accustomed to their children playing with little Time Warp or Spring Fever.  And eventually Moonbeam, Earth, Love and Precious Promise all ended up in public school.

That’s when the kindergarten teachers first met Fruit Stand.  Every fall, parents applied name tags to their children, kissed them good-bye and sent them off to school on the bus.  So it was for Fruit Stand.  The teachers thought the boy’s name was odd, but they tried to make the best of it.

“Would you like to play with the blocks, Fruit Stand?” they offered.

And later, “Fruit Stand, how about a snack?”  He accepted hesitantly.  By the end of the day, his name didn’t seem much odder than Heather’s or Sun Ray’s.

At dismissal time, the teachers led the children out to the buses.

“Fruit Stand, do you know which one is your bus?”  He didn’t answer.  That wasn’t strange.  He hadn’t answered them all day.  Lots of children are shy on the first day of school.  It didn’t matter.  The teachers had instructed the parents to write the names of their children’s bus stop on the reverse side of their name tags.  The teacher simply turned over the tag. There, neatly printed, was the word “Anthony.”

We often hear folks say, “There’s nothing in a name!”  But there is very much something in a name.  Our name identifies who we are and where we came from (and sometimes where we’re going).  That’s why Abram’s name was changed to Abraham (“father of a multitude”), and Simon’s to Peter (“the rock”).

As Christians, we are proud to wear the name of the one who is our Lord, our Savior and our head.

“If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified.  But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people’s matters.  Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.” (1 Peter 4:14-16)

It truly does make a difference what name we wear.  If you don’t believe me, just ask Fruit Stand.

Have a great day!
