Memorial Day

I’m thankful for all the men and women who have and are serving our country today and in the past.  I know you sacrificed so much to protect us and our freedoms.  I also know families sacrifice as mush as those who are serving.  Family members left at home miss their loved ones and daily have concerns about whether their service person will make it back home safely.  Thank-you all!

Mrs. Othell Williams will have a pacemaker implanted tomorrow.  Pray all goes well tomorrow and the pacemaker is helpful in making “Miss” Othell healthier.

Tom Brister will meet with the surgeon Thursday.  Pray for Tom and his family as they face the uncertainties ahead of them.

Audrey Faust Lambert

(November 10, 1926 – May 29, 2011)

A resident of Amite, she died at 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, May 29, 2011 at her home. She was born November 10, 1926 in Montpelier and was 84 years of age. She is survived by her 2 daughters Vivian Lambert Trabona and her husband, Nick, Amite and Bonnie Lambert Travis and her husband, J. D., Baytown, TX; 5 sons, Harrell Lanis Lambert, Tickfaw, Charles Richard Lambert and his wife, Pattie, Baytown, TX, Aubrey Carl Lambert and his wife, Janet, Amite, Homer Leo Lambert and his wife, Donna, Pearl River, Kenneth Fred Lambert and his wife, Dawn; 1 brother, Aubrey “Elwood” Faust, Brookhaven. Preceded in death by husband, Harrell H. Lambert; parents, Leo and Abline Chavers Faust; brother, Wade Faust; sister, Altie Faust Bennett; 2 grandsons, Troy Lanis Lambert and Timothy Shane Lambert; daughter-in-law, Jackie Lambert.

Arrangements are incomplete at this time with McKneely Funeral Home, Amite.

Henry McKenzie’s doctor decided to treat Henry with medication in order to possibly prevent surgery.  Please pray for Henry, Virginia, and the rest of the family.

Robert Dale Forrest

(February 4, 1931 – May 28, 2011)

A resident of Kentwood, he passed away at 12:56 p.m. on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in McComb, MS. He was born February 4, 1931 and was 80 years of age. He was a U.S. Army veteran of Korea and a member of Spring Creek Masonic Lodge #184. Visitation at Spring Creek Baptist Church from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. on and from 9 a.m. until religious services at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2011. Services conducted by Dr. Danny Smith. Masonic Services will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday. Interment will follow in Spring Creek Masonic Cemetery, Kentwood. Survived by wife, Julia B. Forrest, daughter, Kathy Dale Forrest, son, Craig Forrest and his wife, Pam, sister, Ivy Beryl Blades and her husband, Jule, 2 brothers, Earl Forrest and his wife, Ann, Wayne Forrest and his wife, Mardell, 2 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 3 step-children, 8 step-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents, Norman Forrest and Ertie Crowe Forrest. McKneely Funeral Home, Kentwood, in charge of arrangements.

Update on baby Cooper. He is sedated because he fights the tubes when he’s awake. The doctor wants to push Cooper to see if he’ll breathe on his own. They will try to wean him from the breathing machine during weekend and expect to see some “worsening” before it gets better (as far as breathing level numbers are concerned). If Cooper’s brain does not tell him to breathe on his own, then his parents have some decisions to make.
His parents asked for prayer. They are broken up, but also have a peace about everything.
Pray for wisdom for the doctors and strength, wisdom and peace for all of the Watson family.

 

It seems that lately God has given us several children to pray for.  I’m sure you will be faithful to pray for each child and their family.  Let’s not let any of them down.

THE VALUE OF SERMONS

The following story has been around for quite a while, but continues to make a good point.  It is supposed to have begun with a letter to the editor of “The British Weekly.”

“Dear Sir:

I notice that ministers seem to set a great deal of importance on their sermons and spend a great deal of time in preparing them.  I have been attending services quite regularly for the past thirty years and during that time, if I estimate correctly, I have listened to no less than 3,000 sermons, but, to my consternation, I discover I cannot remember a single one of them.  I wonder if a minister’s time might be more profitably spent on something else? Sincerely….”

That letter triggered an avalanche of angry responses for weeks.  Sermons were castigated and defended, but eventually a single letter closed the debate:

“Dear Sir:

I have been married for 30 years, during that time I have eaten 32,580 meals — mostly of my wife’s cooking. Suddenly, I have discovered that I cannot remember the menu of a single meal. And yet, I have received nourishment from every single one of them. I have the distinct impression that without them, I would have starved to death long ago.  Sincerely….”

There is a great deal of wisdom in that letter.  I have heard countless sermons over my lifetime — many were memorable, many more were not.  The truth is, I can’t even remember everything that I have preached (that’s why God created databases)!  But I know that many of the sermons which I heard have made an impact in my life, and I pray that the sermons I deliver do the same for others.

“And my speech and my preaching

were not with persuasive words of human wisdom,

but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,

that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men

but in the power of God.”

~1 Cor. 2:4-5~

Wenous Clayton Goings

(October 13, 1922 – May 26, 2011)

A resident of Kentwood, he died at 10:25 p.m. on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at Heritage Healthcare Center in Hammond. He was born October 13, 1922 in Mt. Hermon and was 88 years of age. Mr. Goings was a U. S. Army Veteran of World War II, a member of American Legion and Veteran’s of Foreign Wars. He was a retired iron worker from Nicholls Construction and a member of Masonic Lodge #248 in Kentwood. He is survived by his 4 grandchildren, Stephanie Goings Kliebert and husband, Paul, Clay Goings and wife Lisa, Chris Goings and Tiffany, all of Hammond and Jon Goings and wife, Amanda, Robert; 8 great-grandchildren; sister, Frances McLain and husband, Jim, Hammond. Preceded in death by wife, Dixie Melvin Goings; 2 sons, Wenous Clayton Goings, Jr. and Billie Ray Goings; sister, Wilcie Dick; brother, Shelby Goings. Visitation at First Baptist Church, Kentwood, from 9 a.m. until Masonic and Religious Services at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 28, 2011. Services conducted by Rev. Joey Miller. Interment Woodland Cemetery, Kentwood.

The family will have lunch at the church following the service.
