Caring Bridge

Anchor

IN 1874, PRISCILLA OWENS found herself dwelling on the imagery of the anchor…

The obvious need for stability in life and her own faith in Christ led her to write:

Will you anchor hold in the
storms of life,

When the clouds unfold their
wings of strife?

When the strong tides life, and
the cables strain,

Will your anchor drift, or firm
remain?

We have an anchor that keeps
the soul

Steadfast and sure while the
billows roll,

Fastened to the Rock
which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep
in the Savior’s love.

The song provides a meditation on the theological truth that our faith in Christ provides a steady foundation for all the changes, joys and troubles of life. And that is one of the most important functions of our music–to cause us to dwell on the truths of God’s word.

Martin Luther declared he didn’t care who wrote the theology books so long as he could write the songs. He knew that people will sing and remember songs and ingest theology naturally. The theology of our songs is important. We must be sure that our worship music reflects the true teaching and accurate knowledge of God. (Chris Stinnett)

“Let the word of Christ dwell in your richly

as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom,

and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs

with gratitude in your hearts to God.”
