Monday

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel,

for it is the power of God for salvation

to everyone who believes,

to the Jew first and also to the Greek.”

~Romans 1:16, NASB~

Please continue to pray for the family of Ray and Beverly Blackwell.  I’m sure it is much more difficult to have two patients than to have only one.  Pray for the health of these two and strength and knowledge for those making decisions and helping care for them.

Connor Corkern is having a difficult time, but hoping to get better without going into the hospital.  Pray for him and for his family as they continue the battle.

Please continue to pray for Mike Hurst as he battles cancer.  Pray for the family with him and the family many miles away.

Mrs. Norma Varnado passed away last night.  The last months have been difficult for her and her family, but she is at peace now.

Operation Christmas Child

  • Thirteen million shoeboxes have been distributed since OCC began.  That many boxes placed end-to-end would circle the world 855 times!
  • When Hannah Bell met Yuri Lopez, who received a shoebox in a Honduran orphanage, at an OCC event in Scottsdale, AZ last year, she was inspired to collect shoeboxes herself. She set a goal of 100 shoeboxes, which she met by reaching out to her church’s youth group, a local preschool, her dad’s co-workers, and out of state friends. Eight year old Hannah collected 116 shoeboxes and donations to support the cost of shipping. “I learned that helping children can make a difference in the world…helping is the big picture in my heart!” –Hannah Bell, Scottsdale, Arizona
  • Working with Operation Christmas Child is a true blessing.  Every box is a gospel opportunity and will change a life forever!  -Sharra K., OCC supporter
  • “My name is Uma from Nepal. I am 13 years old and I’m in 9th grade. I have 7 siblings and it’s very difficult to attend school regularly because we cannot get enough school supplies. I was so excited to see school supplies in the gift box. I did not have any to go to school, but Operation Christmas Child provided me with them. I am so happy to get these. Now I can be regular in my school!”

Week of Prayer for Georgia Barnett Offering for State Missions Sept. 14 -21

“Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good.” Titus 3:14

The WMU of Two Rivers Association will celebrate this week at FBC, Kentwood at 10:00 this morning with Sylvester Humphrey, volunteer coordinator of the new Hope Center, as our speaker.  Hope will open at 9:00 in the morning in Roseland with a thrift store and a Second Harvest Food Bank.  Applications for the food can be completed beginning in the morning. The dates of food distribution are not schedule yet, but I will keep you update.

Today, final preparations of the building are being made.  Later, volunteers will be needed to work each day.  Hope Center will be open Tuesday – Friday, 9:00 – 5:00.  What a blessing Hope Center will be to people of our area!  What is blessing each volunteer will receive!

You may ask how Hope Center and the Georgia Barnett Offering are related.  Some of the start-up funds have been provided through our state missions office.  Additional funding will be provided by the churches of Two Rivers Association and by individuals.

Third Thursday – We will be meeting Thursday at the cabin at 6:30.  Join us for a wonderful evening of food, fellowship, devotional, prayer, and music.

so that we can share that same comfort

with others in trouble.

We share in the terrible sufferings of Christ,

but also in the wonderful comfort he gives.”

Operation Christmas Child

  • “My neighborhood church collected items during vacation bible school. I pick stuff up all year round and have a bin full to fill shoebox. This year I took my 5 year old nephew to the store to pick up some toys he thought other children might like. He was so excited to take his bag of toys, school supplies, and hygiene items and donate them!” – Melanie S.“I was shocked that someone I didn’t even know would take the time to pray for me.” – Divine, shoebox recipient
  • On the shoebox gift distribution day, there was a girl who was very poor and her shoes were broken. When she opened the shoebox there was a pair of shoes her size. She put them on and couldn’t stop crying for joy. – Pastor Pedro, Colombia
  • “Blessed is he who considers the poor; The Lord will deliver him in time of trouble. The Lord will preserve him and keep him alive, and he will be blessed on the earth. You will not deliver him to the will of his enemies. The Lord will strengthen him on his bed of illness; You will sustain him on his sickbed.” Psalm 41:1-3
  • Today at 1 P.M., FBC, K will have a craft day to make items to go in the shoeboxes.  Join us in the fellowship hall to help (no special skills required).

Thursday

“The harvest is abundant,

but the workers are few.

Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest

to send out workers into His harvest.”

~Matthew 9:37-38, HCSB~

(As soon as I read that verse,

I thought of the volunteers at Hope Center.

I thank God for each person who has freely given their time now

knowing there is a harvest ahead.)

9/11 – Let’s pray for our country.  May it return to its strength and great image in the eyes of its people and those around the world.  I think the first step in the right direction will be to put God back in His rightful place.

Wednesday Addition

Senior Adult Revival – The service at Greensburg was wonderful.  I’m so thankful I’m a senior adult and got to spend three mornings with the other senior adults from this area.  I feel so blessed!

Kentwood was represented by a number of people each day, but today, one of the oldest, if not the oldest member was there.  Ninety-four year old, Mrs. Susie Wales was there and so proud to be with all the others.

Hope Center

Saturday, youth and adults from several churches moved in shelving and clothing.  This was the first big step leading to what has been done since then.

This afternoon there were three men and five ladies working.  There was a strong sense of unity among the people, even though we were from Roseland, East Fork, Kedron, and Kentwood.  That’s the way it has been.   Some days the people were from these and other churches, but no one person or church has had to do all the work. Tomorrow morning, ladies from New Zion will begin work at 8:00 and 9:00.  I don’t know who else will join us but I know God is already planning who will be there and what will be accomplished.  Is he sending you?

Four new nine foot pipes have been installed to hang clothes were installed this afternoon. They are already being put to use.

This middle of the afternoon a truck and trailer arrived WITH TWO NEW AIR CONDITIONERS. The owner of the building arrived shortly.  They were hard at work on the first air conditioner.  I don’t have a time, but the building should begin to get cool some time tomorrow.  We will be so thankful!

More great news – Tomorrow, clay and gravel will arrive to make the circle around the building.  That will be a big and needed improvement.

I wish we had taken before and after pictures.  It is so amazing to see how much work has been done.  You cannot appreciate the difference unless you saw the building Monday.

There was a representative of Second Harvest there this morning.  I’m not sure when the first food will be distributed, but Tuesday is the day set aside to begin registering people.

Sylvester Humphrey said God surely had to be in this by the way the ladies were working in those “warm” conditions.  He mentioned a specific name, but I’ll just say “ladies”.  I certainly can see God’s hand at work.

This project began months ago when it was planted in two hearts.  Since then, associational leadership, an associational missions team, a finance team, pastors, sixteen churches, the La. Baptist Convention, and others have joined this team.

The Sunday School lesson Sunday was about unity in Christ.  It has been wonderful to see people from five different churches working at the same time with a common purpose.  We have seen the beginning of a cooperative effort of people and churches with a  project that will impact the people of Tangipahoa and St. Helena in a big way.

May God richly bless each volunteer and each visitor/customer.  Each one could possibly leave Hope Center with more than than expected.  They could leave with Jesus in their hearts and lives.  God is surely at work!
