Frances Gilson Hughes
(July 30, 1954 – April 26, 2012)

A resident of Amite, LA, died at 5:22 p.m. Baton Rouge General Medical Center in Baton Rouge, LA. She was born July 30, 1954 in Natchitoches, LA and was 57 years of age. In 1972, she graduated from Natchitoches Academy, in 1976 she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Northwestern State University, in 1979 she earned a Masters Degree in Education from LSU, afterwards she worked with Louisiana Board of Regents, Dept. Of Transportation and development and retired from the Louisiana Contractors Licensing Board. Visitation at McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, LA from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Sunday and at First Baptist Church, Natchitoches, LA from 12 Noon until Religious Services at 1 p.m. Monday, April 20, 2012. Services conducted by Rev. Oren Connor. Interment American Cemetery, Natchitoches, LA. Survived by husband, Larkin Wayne Hughes, daughter, Laura Hughes Marvin and husband Chip, Baton Rouge, 2 sisters, Dana Gilson Kinard and husband Dr. Curt Kinard, Baton Rouge, and Mary Ann Gilson Gardner and husband Dr. Jim Gardner, Central, brother, Gil Gilson and wife Kay, Natchitoches, grandson, Chase Marvin, Baton Rouge, granddaughter, Jessica LiRocchi, New Orleans, great-granddaughter, Lily LiRocchi, New Orleans. Mrs. Peggy Haynes is home after a few days in the hospital.  Doctors were not able to determine why she passed out.  She thanks everyone who prayed for her.

Carol M. Russell is home after a very good day of out-patient surgery.  The surgeon did not need to do as much as he expected. Thank you for praying for her.

Kathy Jo Thompson has been admitted to the hospital for surgery.  Her heart surgery will last all morning and all afternoon.  Pray for this young lady who has a great attitude about all she has been through.

Continue to pray for the Chambers/Hayden/Bankston family of Amite and Arcola.

A year ago today many tornados struck Alabama and other states.  Pray for families who lost loved one and for families who lost homes and businesses.  Many lives were changed forever.  Much still needs to be done to recover physically and emotionally.

Patricia A. Woodard “Pat” Lester

Age 62 and a resident of Loranger, Patricia passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at her residence. She was a loving wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, whom will be missed dearly. Patricia retired from Hammond State School, an active employee at Loranger Middle School for the last 25 years and an avid dancer at 5-6-7-8 dance academy.

Patricia leaves behind her loving husband, John Lester; her son, Brandon Lester and wife Kori, along with her granddaughter, Khloe Lester. She is also survived by her father, Virgil Woodard; sister, Mary Sue Woodard; brothers, Woody Woodard and wife Mary Lee, Roy Milton Woodard and Gary Wayne Woodard, as well as, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceding Patricia in death was her mother, Mary Nell Woodard.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral service from the chapel of Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home of Hammond on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. The family requests that visiting hours be observed on Friday, April 27, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and again on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. The services will be officiated by Rev. G. Kent Newell and interment will follow in Joiner Cemetery in Loranger.

Mrs. Vera Hayden and her family really need our prayers today.

Pray for Lauree Titus who is having health issues.

Mrs. Oma Zachary is having valve replacement surgery.  Please be in prayer for her and her family.

Carol M. Russell is having a procedure today this is very complicated because she is a high risk candidate.  Please pray for Carol, the medical staff, and for the family as they wait.

Mr. Raymond Anthony is doing better.  He will begin to have only one treatment per week (Tuesdays).  Please continue to pray for Mr. Raymond and “Miss” Velma.

Continue to pray for Andy Taylor as he continues to suffer with shingles.

Pray for Miss Frances Strickland.  She has had one cataract surgery and will have the second one next week.

Mrs. Mary Womack continues to have health problems.  Please keep her on your prayer list.

John W. Brown, Sr. was born November 25, 1931 and passed away at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was 80, a native of Tangipahoa Parish and a resident of Amite.

John is survived by his wife of 56 years, Evelyn Granger Brown; daughter, Sherry B. Tanguis and husband Freddie; son, John W. Brown, Jr. and wife Maxie; grandchildren, Jason Tanguis and wife Amanda, Roxanna Bosch and husband Michael, Donna Roberson and husband John, Jr., & Daniel H. Moore; sister, Louise Singleton; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Elaine and Frank Lee; 9 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Preceded in death by his parents Theodore H. and Ola Golman Brown; sister, Delores Stevens; 3 brothers, Shelby Brown, Clayton Holden & Charles Holden; father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Clara Granger; brother-in-law, Thomas Singleton; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Walter and Patsy Gill, Sr.; grandson, Donnie Hendley; great granddaughter, Adalyn Mae Bosch.

Billy Elton Alford
(January 19, 1937 – April 21, 2012)

Billy Elton Alford, 75 of Tylertown died April 21, 2012 at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg.

Mr. Alford was born on January 19, 1937 to the late Brewster Van Alford and Vera Potts Alford.

Mr. Alford was a coat department supervisor for Haspels Inc. in Tylertown until it closed in 1982. He then drove a gas truck for Blossman Gas Co. in McComb for over 24 years. He loved cattle farming and gardening. He was a member of Lexie Baptist Church and attended Silver Creek Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 47 years Linda Conerly Alford; two brothers B.V. Alford and Wendell Alford.

Survivors include two daughters Cindy A. Polk and her husband Charles Ray of Tylertown, Shari A. Price and her husband Dennis of Kentwood, LA; one sister Annie Merle Alexander of Jayess, MS; four grandchildren Emily P. Troxler and her husband Josh of Tylertown; Taylor E. Polk of Tylertown, Cassie McCullough Simpson and her husband C.J. of Magnolia, Haley McCullough of Kentwood; two great grandsons Gabe and Brennan Simpson two expected great grandchildren and a special cousin George Alford of Tylertown.

Visitation will be Monday evening at Silver Creek Baptist Church from 6 until 9 PM and will continue Tuesday from 12 until services there at 2 PM. Burial will follow in the Tylertown Cemetery. Elder Billy Reyer, Rev. Wayne Hall, Rev. Jimmy Smith and Rev. Danny Smith will officiate. Jones Funeral Home of McComb will be in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the charity of your choice.

Pallbearers will be Taylor Polk, Josh Troxler, C.J. Simpson, James Stinson, Larry King and Nathan Alford. Honorary pallbearers will be Mac and Mark Conerly, George and Lynn Alford.

Monday Afternoon

Please pray for Brady Haynes’ mother, Peggy, who is hospitalized in Birmingham after passing out at church yesterday.  The doctors are testing today to see if there is a possible heart issue.

Pray for my high school classmate, Georgia Tarver Canale, of Amite.  She was bitten by a spider.  While she was hospitalized due to chest pains, doctors discovered a need for three stents.  Georgia is recovering and is thankful for that little spider.  Doesn’t God surprise us sometimes?

Pray for Kenneth Birch as he has surgery one week from today.

Please continue to pray for Marsha Bankston and for her mother, Mrs. Vera Hayden, who is still at North Oaks.

Jimmy Schwartz and morst of his family were at church this morning.  I’m thankful they had this time together.  Pray for Jimmy’s health problems to have a clear solution.

Jamie Schwartz and his family were at church yesterday morning.  Thank God for Jamie and other heros who have given so much of themselves to protect freedom.

Carol New had a fall at home yesterday.  She is sore, but thinks she did not break anything.  Pray for her to feel better real soon.

James Todd, husband of Faye Carol Chadwick Todd, learned he has kidney cancer.  Pray for James and Faye as they learn about treatment options to fight the cancer.
